Heterocycles from Carbohydrate Precursors
This book is a volume in the series Topics in Heterocyclic Chemistry.Itc- ers the key methods used for designing synthetic approaches to heterocycles from carbohydrates and the value and scope of these methods. Carbohydrates are widely distributed in nature and constitute the largest part of renewable biomasses. Moreover, many carbohydrates and their derivatives are comm- cially available at relatively cheap prices. Consequently their utilization is highly encouraged and economically they are of great signi?cance. Moreover, carbohydrates are highly functionalized compounds that can be readily deri- tized and/or cyclized to provide heterocyclic compounds. This book provides a modern account and an up-to-date description of the advancement in the synthesis of diverse heterocycles from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can be considered as a source of chiral centers in addition to the variable modi?cation thereof. Herein the elaboration of the carbohydrate molecules for providing different heterocycles is the main objective and team efforts from leaders of the topics has been gathered in this volume. This book is designed to be suitable for students and researchers. It is highly recommended as a reference book and for teaching the fascinating topics related to carbohydrates, heterocycles and organic synthesis. In addition to its importance in academia, it is also an excellent source for information about the variety of methods used in the synthesis of heterocycles important to industry.

This volume contains the talks presented at the International Symposium on Electronic Excitations and Interaction Processes in Organic Molecular Aggre gates which was held at Schloss Elmau, Bavaria, Germany from June 5 to June 10, 1983. In the recent years the investigation of organic materials has developed rapidly and has led to the construction of materials with interesting proper ties. The discovery of highly conducting and superconducting organic materials is definitely one of the reasons for the enormous increase in research acti vity in this field. Interesting applications have been realized or seem pos sible, such as the application of organic materials in electrophotography. The conductivity of organic polymers may be varied within a large range by doping and such materials have been used to construct an organic battery. Some time ago it was suggested that organic glasses and polymers could be used as stor age materials in computer technology. With the development of preparation tech niques and modern methods of investigation, for example, high resolution and picosecond spectroscopy, a large amount of experimental data is available not only for the conducting materials but also for organic semiconductors and in sulators. With this rapid accumulation of experimental material the microscopic theoretical understanding could not keep pace.

The chapters summarize years of extensive research in each area, andprovideinsightinthenewthemesofnaturalproductresearch.Manyofthe contributors illustrate their laboratory experiences. It's obvious that readers will gain exciting and essential information fromthe volume. In the ?rst chapter, Kayser et al. describe the chemistry, biosynthesis and biological activities of artemisinin, one of the most promising antimalarial molecules, and its related natural peroxides. They present new strategies of producing artemisinin that utilize fascinating technologies. as Additionally, thepharmacokineticpro?leandthedevelopmentofnewdrugdeliverysystems onPlasmodium infected erythrocytesare presented . Khan describes some aspects of sugar-derived heterocycles and their p- cursors which are utilized as the inhibitors against glycogen phosphorylases (GPs), and are responsible for the release of mono-glucose from poly-glucose (glycogen) in the second chapter. The inhibitors of GP could help to stop or slowdownglycogenolysisaswellasglucoseproduction.Ultimately, thewhole processwill result in the recovery fromdiabetes of NIDDMpatients. In his contribution, Verma studies quantitative structure-activityrelati- ship (QSAR) and proposes several interesting QSAR models of heterocyclic molecules having cytotoxicactivities against different cancer cell lines, which couldin turn clarify the chemical-biologicalinteractions ofsuch compounds. Alamgir et al., in the fourth chapter, review the recent progress of the synthesis, reactivity and biological activities of benzimidazoles. Additionally, they describe several new techniques and procedures for the synthesis of the same scaffold. Inthe?fthchapter,KhanreviewstheessentialroleoftheenzymeTyrosinase in human melanin production, covering various related clinical problems.

Design of Organic Solids
Considering the high level of our knowledge concerning covalent bond formation in the organic chemistry of molecules, our understanding of the principles involved in organic solid design is almost in its infancy. While chemists today are able to synthesize organic molecules of very high complexity using sophisticated methods of preparation, they lack general approaches enabling them to reliably predict organic crystalline or solid structures from molecular descriptors - no matter how simple they are. On the other hand, nearly all the organic matter surrounding us is not in the single-molecule state but aggregated and condensed to form liquid or solid molecular assemblages and structural arrays giving rise to the appearances and properties of organic compounds we usually observe. Obviously, the electrical, optical or magnetic properties of solid organic materials that are important requirements for future technologies and high-tech applications, as well as the stability and solubility behavior of a medicament depend on the structure of the molecule and the intramolecular forces, but even more decisively on the intermolecular forces, i. e. the packing structure of the molecules to which a general approach is lacking. This situation concerned ]. Maddox some years ago to such a degree that he described it as one of the continuing scandals in the physical sciences [see (1998) Nature 335:201; see also Ball, P. (1996) Nature 381:648]. The problem of predicting organic solid and crystal structures is very dif- cult.

Implementation and Redesign of Catalytic Function in Biopolymers
Improvement of the catalytic properties of biological catalysts is equally important in the optimization of industrial processes as in the fundamental understanding of the catalytic machinery at the molecular level. The approaches taken are diverse and span from purely result-oriented, but nevertheless methodologically subtle, making and screening of combinatorial libraries to highly sophisticated tailoring of the environment of active sites. This volume illustrates four different concepts for modifying a given biocatalyst framework or create novel functions using Nature's basic building blocks. Summing up the state-of-the-art biocatalyst engineering it, serves as an orientational landmark and a platform for the specialist and non-expert alike to keep abreast of developments in this rapidly evolving field.

Lanthanides: Chemistry and Use in Organic Synthesis
While the lanthanides (strictly defined as the 14 elements following lanthanum in the periodic table, but as normally used also include lanthanum itself) have several unique characteristics compared to other elements, their appearance in the history of the development of organometallic chemistry is rather recent. Since the f orbitals are filled gradually from lanthanum ([Xe]4f ) to lutetium ([Xe]4fl4), they are regarded as the f-block elements, which are discriminated from the d-block transition elements. This book was edited as the second volume of Topics in Organometallic Chemistry , aiming at an overview of recent advances of chemistry and organic synthesis of lanthanides. Since scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) (which lie above the lanthanides and have similar characteristics) are also included, this book covers rare earth chemistry. Recently, especially in this decade, the chemistry and organic synthesis of lanthanides have developed rapidly as one of the most exciting areas. An international team of authors has been brought together in order to provide a timely and concise review of current research efforts such as lanthanide catalysis in small molecule organic synthesis especially focused on carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions, chemistry and organic synthesis using low-valent lanthanides such as diiodosamarium, asymmetric catalysis, lant- nide-catalyzed polymer synthesis, and polymer-supported lanthanide catalysts used in organic synthesis. Principles of organolanthanide chemistry are sum- rized in the first chapter. I am sincerely grateful to Drs. R. Anwander, E. C. D- dy, H. Gr6ger, Z. Hou, H. Kagan, G. Molander, J. L. Namy, M. Shibasaki, Y.

Photochemistry and Photophysics of Coordination Compounds
The Seventh International Symposium on the Photochemistry and Photo- physics of Coordination Compounds was held in the charming Schlo~ Elmau lying in a hidden valley of the Bavarian Alps above Garmisch- Partenkirchen, Federal Republic of Germany, from March 29 to April 2, 1987. About ninety participants from seventeen countries including about thirty non-European scientists as far away as Japan and Australia came together for this symposium. Forty-five oral and twenty-five poster contributions were presented. These presentations and the opportunity for many formal and informal discussions stimulated an intense scienti- fic interaction between the participants. This meeting followed previous symposia held in Muhlheim 1974 (Koerner von Gustorf), Ferrara 1976 (Carassiti, Scandola), Koln 1978 (Wasgestian), Montreal 1980 (Serpone), Paris 1982 (Gianotti) and London 1984 (Harriman). The main fields covered by this 7th Symposium were photo-redox processes, organometallic photochemistry, and properties of metal centered excited states. Furthermore, special complexes such as 2+ [Ru(bpy)3] and related compounds as well as Cr(III)-complexes were discussed extensively. Moreover, a series of potential applications such as solar energy conversion and storage (e.g. water splitting) and photoresist technology were important subjects of this meeting. Thus, it was shown again that the rapidly expanding field of excited-state chemistry and physics of coordination compounds has become an important part of inorganic chemistry.
