Handbook of Photosynthesis
Quite naturally, photosynthesis has achieved massive amounts of attention in recent years. Aside from being the most spectacular physiological process in plant growth, it is actually the key to our dealing with the potentially cataclysmic accumulation of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere. Unfortunately, while information is plentiful, all this attention has resulted in a scattered database on photosynthesis, with no contemporary starting point...at least until now. With the second edition of the Handbook of Photosynthesis, Mohammad Pessarakli once again fills the need for an authoritative and balanced resource by assembling a team of experts from across the globe. Together, they have created a comprehensive reference that in a single volume includes important background information, as well as the most recent research findings on photosynthesis. Completely Revised with Several New Chapters The handbook, a completely updated reworking of the critically acclaimed first edition, details all of the photosynthetic factors and processes under both normal and stressful conditions, covering lower and higher plants as well as related biochemistry and plant molecular biology. Divided into fourteen sections for ease of reference, with nearly 8000 bibliographic citations, the handbook contains authoritative contributions from over 80 scientists. It includes approximately 500 drawings, photographs, tables, and equations- all designed to reinforce and clarify important text material.

Organic Chemistry: Structure, Mechanism, and Synthesis
Organic Chemistry provides a comprehensive discussion of the basic principles of organic chemistry in their relation to a host of other fields in both physical and biological sciences. This book is written based on the premise that there are no shortcuts in organic chemistry, and that understanding and mastery cannot be achieved without devoting adequate time and attention to the theories and concepts of the discipline. It lays emphasis on connecting the basic principles of organic chemistry to real world challenges that require analysis, not just recall. This text covers topics ranging from structure and bonding in organic compounds to functional groups and their properties; identification of functional groups by infrared spectroscopy; organic reaction mechanisms; structures and reactions of alkanes and cycloalkanes; nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions; conjugated alkenes and allylic systems; electrophilic aromatic substitution; carboxylic acids; and synthetic polymers. Throughout the book, principles logically evolve from one to the next, from the simplest to the most complex examples, with abundant connections between the text and real world applications. There are extensive examples of biological relevance, along with a chapter on organometallic chemistry not found in other standard references. This book will be of interest to chemists, life scientists, food scientists, pharmacists, and students in the physical and life sciences.

Butyrate: Food Sources, Functions & Health Benefits
This is the first book specifically devoted to butyrate and its biological functions in the health of humans and animals. It is the result of the collective efforts of a group of international experts working on different aspects of butyrate. It has been recognised for a long time that the consumption of dietary fibres has positive metabolic health effects. These effects are directly associated with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyrate, formed by the microbial degradation of dietary fibres in the digestive tract. Butyrate-induced biological effects provide examples of epigenomic regulation induced by nutrient elements and provide a basis for understanding the full range of the biological roles and molecular mechanisms that butyrate may play in cell growth, proliferation and energy metabolism. This book is a comprehensive collection of highly innovative research ideas, strategies, and crucial points related to butyrate and its biological functions. With a detailed introduction of recent advances in different but intriguing research fields, this book is a great reference for biochemists, molecular biologists, biomedical scientists and clinical researchers. This book is also a great reference for graduate students working in the related fields of biomedical sciences.

Stereochemistry and Global Connectivity: The Legacy of Ernest L. Eliel Volume 1
A major strength of American Chemical Society (ACS) is the large number of volunteers who help to grow and sustain the organization, from local sections to technical divisions, from regional to national meetings, from task forces to national committees, and from conducting research to writing and reviewing manuscripts for journals. Some of them spend literally thousands of hours on behalf of ACS and the global chemistry enterprise, helping students or fellow scientists, organizing meetings and symposia, and reaching out to the local communities. One of the people who excelled in these efforts was the late Prof. Ernest L. Eliel. For many years he taught at the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina and was an acknowledged leader in organic stereochemistry and conformational analysis. He was also a leader at ACS, serving as ACS President in 1992 and Chair of ACS Board of Directors in 1987-89. Unfortunately Prof. Eliel died in 2008, but the ACS held a symposium in 2016 honoring his work. This book features two volumes highlighting stereochemistry and global connectivity, which represent two of the key legacies of Prof. Eliel. Because stereochemistry is a fundamental chemistry concept, ongoing research is carried out in different subfields of chemistry (such as organic, medicinal, carbohydrates, polymers), using various analytical techniques (such as NMR, X-ray crystallography, and circular dichroism). The two volumes of this book contain many research papers that represent cutting-edge research in all the above areas. Because chemistry is now a world-wide enterprise, global connectivity is important to chemistry practitioners, and the chapters on international activities should be of great interest as well.

Polymeric Liquids & Networks: Structure and Properties
Polymeric Liquids and Networks: Structure and Properties is the first book of two by William W. Graessley that presents a unified view of flexible-chain polymer liquids and networks. The topics of both volumes range from equilibrium properties to dynamic response, finite deformation behavior and non-Newtonian flow. The second book will be titled Polymeric Liquids and Networks: Dynamics and Rheology. These various aspects of the field were developed over the past 70 years by researchers from many academic disciplines. The infusion of fresh viewpoints continually invigorated and enriched the field, making polymeric liquids and networks a truly interdisciplinary subject. The lack of a common terminology and perspective, however, has led to compartmentalization, making it difficult for a newcomer, even one technically trained, to gain a broad appreciation of the field and to see the relationships among its various parts. The aim of these two books, without diluting the substance, is to achieve a desired unity. Polymeric Liquids and Networks emphasizes fundamental principles and a molecular viewpoint. The conceptual basis of theories underlying each topical area is explained with derivations sometimes outlined briefly and sometimes given in detail. Technical terminology is kept to a minimum necessary for coherent presentation. The goal of the text is to provide an informed understanding rather than detailed technical proficiency. Theory, experiment, and simulation are woven together as appropriate for achieving a balanced view. The books are designed to serve academic and industrial needs, consolidating the understanding of topics with both practical and fundamental significance, and written from a technical but non-specialized perspective. The books deal mainly with non-polar and weakly polar species and largely with results derived from experiments on structurally well-defined systems. The objective is not to ignore the more complex systems, which are pervasive in both nature and industry and important in their own right. Much space is devoted to structural distributions, their characterization and their effect on properties. It is rather to provide a framework for better understanding of all polymeric liquids by identifying, in the simplest possible circumstances, the universal attributes of a chain-like and flexible molecular structure.

Organic Photochromic and Thermochromic Compounds: Volume 2: Physicochemical Studies, Biological Applications, and Thermochromism
This publication is the fourth major treatise on photochromism involving organic molecules and derived systems. The first such book was edited by G.H. Brown in the Weissberger series in 1971, the second was edited by H. Durr and H. Bouas-Laurent in the Elsevier series in 1990. A third book, edited by C.B. McArdle, should be added to the list, which focuses on the very important topic of the behavior of photochromic systems in polymer matrices.; This book is a result of the large increase in the number of publications and patents concerning photochromic compounds and their use in various applications, such as ophthalmic lenses and security printing, during the last 10 years. As a result of this increased interest, two successful International Symposia on Photochromism have been held: the first, ISOP93, in France on Embiez Island near Bandol (September 12-16, 1993) and the second, ISOP96, in the United States in Clearwater, Florida (September 8-12, 1996). The number of countries represented at each of these symposia (17 and 16, respectively) attests to the international scope of the photochromic research community. This global interest is also exemplified by the authors of the chapters within this book. The aim of the second volume of this new review is focused on the physico-chemical properties and photochromic behavior of the best-known systems, leading to new developments in the known photochromic series or the discovery of new families.; However, chapters are included on the most appropriate physico-chemical methods by which photochromic substances can be studied (spectrokinetic studies on photostationary states, Raman spectroscopy, EPR, chemical computations and molecular modeling, X-ray diffraction analysis). In addition, special topics such as interaction between photochromic compounds and polymer matrices, photodegradation mechanisms, and potential biological applications have been treated. The last chapter, on thermochromic materials, is included to emphasize the chemical similarities between photochromic and thermochromic materials.; In general, the literature cited within the chapters covers publications through 1995.

Handbook of Carbohydrate-Modifying Biocatalysts
This book provides an actual overview of the structure, function, and application of carbohydrate-modifying biocatalysts. Carbohydrates have been disregarded for a long time by the scientific community, mainly due to their complex structure. Meanwhile, the situation changed with increasing knowledge about the key role carbohydrates play in biological processes such as recognition, signal transduction, immune responses, and others. An outcome of research activities in glycoscience is the development of several new pharmaceuticals against serious diseases such as malaria, cancer, and various storage diseases. Furthermore, the employment of carbohydrate-modifying biocatalysts-enzymes as well as microorganisms-will contribute significantly to the development of environmentally friendly processes boosting a shift of the chemical industry from petroleum- to bio-based production of chemicals from renewable resources. The updated content of the second edition of this book has been extended by discussing the current state of the art of using recombinantly expressed carbohydrate-modifying biocatalysts and the synthesis of minicellulosomes in connection with consolidated bioprocessing of lignocellulosic material. Furthermore, a synthetic biology approach for using DAHP-dependent aldolases to catalyze asymmetric aldol reactions is presented.
