Amphiphilic Polymer Co-networks: Synthesis, Properties, Modelling and Applications
Amphiphilic polymer co-networks (APCNs) are a type of polymeric hydrogel, their hydrophobic polymer segments and hydrophilic components produce less aqueous swelling, giving better mechanical properties than conventional hydrogels. This new class of polymers is attracting increasing attention, resulting in further basic research on the system, as well as new applications. This book focuses on new developments in the field of APCNs, and is organised in four sections: synthesis, properties, applications and modelling. Co-network architectures included in the book chapters are mainly those deriving from hydrophobic macro-cross-linkers, representing the classical approach; however, more modern designs are also presented. Properties of interest discussed include aqueous swelling, thermophysical and mechanical properties, self-assembly, electrical actuation, and protein adsorption. Applications described in the book chapters include the use of co-networks as soft contact lenses, scaffolds for drug delivery and tissue engineering, matrices for heterogeneous biocatalysis, and membranes of controllable permeability. Finally, an important theory chapter on the modelling of the self-assembly of APCNs is also included. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in hydrogels, polymer networks, polymer chemistry, block copolymers, self-assembly and nanomaterials, as well as their applications in contact lenses, drug delivery, tissue engineering, membranes and biocatalysis.

The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms
Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and common error alerts are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set.

Organic Chemistry: Concepts and Applications
Provides an in-depth study of organic compounds that bridges the gap between general and organic chemistry Organic Chemistry: Concepts and Applications presents a comprehensive review of organic compounds that is appropriate for a two-semester sophomore organic chemistry course. The text covers the fundamental concepts needed to understand organic chemistry and clearly shows how to apply the concepts of organic chemistry to problem-solving. In addition, the book highlights the relevance of organic chemistry to the environment, industry, and biological and medical sciences. The author includes multiple-choice questions similar to aptitude exams for professional schools, including the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) to help in the preparation for these important exams. Rather than categorize content information by functional groups, which often stresses memorization, this textbook instead divides the information into reaction types. This approach bridges the gap between general and organic chemistry and helps students develop a better understanding of the material. A manual of possible solutions for chapter problems for instructors and students is available in the supplementary websites. This important book: - Provides an in-depth study of organic compounds with division by reaction types that bridges the gap between general and organic chemistry - Covers the concepts needed to understand organic chemistry and teaches how to apply them for problem-solving - Puts a focus on the relevance of organic chemistry to the environment, industry, and biological and medical sciences - Includes multiple choice questions similar to aptitude exams for professional schools Written for students of organic chemistry, Organic Chemistry: Concepts and Applications is the comprehensive text that presents the material in clear terms and shows how to apply the concepts to problem solving.

Small Molecule Drug Discovery: Methods, Molecules and Applications presents the methods used to identify bioactive small molecules, synthetic strategies and techniques to produce novel chemical entities and small molecule libraries, chemoinformatics to characterize and enumerate chemical libraries, and screening methods, including biophysical techniques, virtual screening and phenotypic screening. The second part of the book gives an overview of privileged cyclic small molecules and major classes of natural product-derived small molecules, including carbohydrate-derived compounds, peptides and peptidomimetics, and alkaloid-inspired compounds. The last section comprises an exciting collection of selected case studies on drug discovery enabled by small molecules in the fields of cancer research, CNS diseases and infectious diseases. The discovery of novel molecular entities capable of specific interactions represents a significant challenge in early drug discovery. Small molecules are low molecular weight organic compounds that include natural products and metabolites, as well as drugs and other xenobiotics. When the biological target is well defined and understood, the rational design of small molecule ligands is possible. Alternatively, small molecule libraries are being used for unbiased assays for complex diseases where a target is unknown or multiple factors contribute to a disease pathology.

Handbook of Aqueous Solubility Data
Over the years, researchers have reported solubility data in the chemical, pharmaceutical, engineering, and environmental literature for several thousand organic compounds. Until the first publication of the Handbook of Aqueous Solubility Data, this information had been scattered throughout numerous sources. Now newly revised, the second edition of this landmark volume continues the tradition of providing an extensive compilation of published aqueous solubility data for a wide variety of organic nonelectrolytes and unionized weak electrolytes. Adds data on 500 more organic compounds This latest edition adds 2000 new solubility values, bringing the total count to over 18,000 data points. Almost 500 organic compounds have been added, increasing the total number to 4661. This volume includes data for pharmaceuticals, pollutants, nutrients, herbicides, and pesticides as well as agricultural, industrial, and energy-related compounds. The same convenient format Each compound is identified by a sequential number along with molecular formula, compound name, synonyms, molecular weight, Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number, melting point, and boiling point if available. Each entry has a five-point evaluation score for the quality of the reporting of the data, along with the full citation, and comments from the authors when necessary. The user-friendly format gives a clear depiction of each piece of solubility data with enough information to estimate its validity. The Handbook of Aqueous Solubility Data gives scientists in a broad range of fields a portable, accessible resource for solubility data of numerous compounds and a single system for the evaluation of the data supplied.

Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective
Environmental problems have become increasingly complex. The procedures for investigating these problems cross the traditional boundaries of organic and analytical chemistry, microbiology and biology. Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective brings together the basic issues of chemical analysis, distribution, persistence, and ecotoxicology. The author illustrates each point with specific examples and presents a mechanistic approach to microbial reactions. Extensive cross referencing between chapters provides cohesion and complete coverage of issues tangential to each topic. The new edition has been extensively revised, and contains a new appendix, a new chapter, plus further revised information throughout the book. In fact, it is a completely new book. A major difficulty in environmental science is that much of the background is widely scattered in the specialized chemical, microbiological, and biological literature. The coverage of all these areas in a single volume, the coherence supplied by the cross references, and the extensive references to the original literature makes Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective a unique resource.
