The two volumes New Developments in Polymer Analytics deal with recent progress in the characterization of polymers, mostly in solution but also at s- faces. Despite the fact that almost all of the described techniques are getting on in years, the contributions are expected to meet the readers interest because either the methods are newly applied to polymers or the instrumentation has achieved a major breakthrough leading to an enhanced utilizaton by polymer scientists. The first volume concentrates on separation techniques. H. Pasch summarizes the recent successes of multi-dimensional chromatography in the characteri- tion of copolymers. Both, chain length distribution and the compositional h- erogeneity of copolymers are accessible. Capillary electrophoresis is widely and successfully utilized for the characterization of biopolymers, particular of DNA. It is only recently that the technique has been applied to the characterization of water soluble synthetic macromolecules. This contributrion of Grosche and Engelhardt focuses on the analysis of polyelectrolytes by capillary electopho- sis. The last contribution of the first volume by Coelfen and Antonietti sum- rizes the achievements and pitfalls of field flow fractionation techniques. The major drawbacks in the instrumentation have been overcome in recent years and the triple F techniques are currently advancing to a powerful competitor to size exclusion chromatography.

Plasma processing of semiconductors is an interdisciplinary field requiring knowledge of both plasma physics and chemical engineering. The two authors are experts in each of these fields, and their collaboration results in the merging of these fields with a common terminology. Basic plasma concepts are introduced painlessly to those who have studied undergraduate electromagnetics but have had no previous exposure to plasmas. Unnecessarily detailed derivations are omitted; yet the reader is led to understand in some depth those concepts, such as the structure of sheaths, that are important in the design and operation of plasma processing reactors. Physicists not accustomed to low-temperature plasmas are introduced to chemical kinetics, surface science, and molecular spectroscopy. The material has been condensed to suit a nine-week graduate course, but it is sufficient to bring the reader up to date on current problems such as copper interconnects, low-k and high-k dielectrics, and oxide damage. Students will appreciate the web-style layout with ample color illustrations opposite the text, with ample room for notes. Stabilizing and Optimizing Control for Time-Delay Systems: Including Model Predictive Controls
Stabilizing and Optimizing Control for Time-Delay Systems introduces three important classes of stabilizing controls for time-delay systems: non-optimal (without performance criteria); suboptimal (including guaranteed costs); and optimal controls. Each class is treated in detail and compared in terms of prior control structures. State- and input-delayed systems are considered. The book provides a unified mathematical framework with common notation being used throughout. Receding-horizon, or model predictive, linear quadratic (LQ), linear-quadratic-Gaussian and H controls for time-delay systems are chosen as optimal stabilizing controls. Cost monotonicity is investigated in order to guarantee the asymptotic stability of closed-loop systems operating with such controls. The authors use guaranteed LQ and H controls as representative sub-optimal methods; these are obtained with pre-determined control structures and certain upper bounds of performance criteria. Non-optimal stabilizing controls are obtained with predetermined control structures but with no performance criteria. Recently developed inequalities are exploited to obtain less conservative results. To facilitate computation, the authors use linear matrix inequalities to represent gain matrices for non-optimal and sub-optimal stabilizing controls, and all the initial conditions of coupled differential Riccati equations of optimal stabilizing controls. Numerical examples are provided with MATLAB (R) codes (downloadable from http://extras.springer.com/) to give readers guidance in working with more difficult optimal and suboptimal controls. Academic researchers studying control of a variety of real processes in chemistry, biology, transportation, digital communication networks and mechanical systems that are subject to time delays will find the results presented in Stabilizing and Optimizing Control for Time-Delay Systems to be helpful in their work. Liquid Crystal Polymers: From Structures to Applications
The subject of liquid crystals and their use in electronic displays and in non-linear optical systems has become of tremendous importance during the last decade; and the incorporation of liquid crystal units into polymeric materials has led to a group of new materials with diverse properties. Some of these properties have been utilized in new products and some have yet to be used. Much published work has appeared that deals with specific materials or particular applications, and it was felt that a book was needed to examine and explain the underlying principles governing the diverse properties of these liquid crystal polymers, LCPs. The current work describes the diverse nature of LCPs, their synthesis, characterization, properties and finally their applications. It describes the manner in which liquid crystallinity or mesomorphism occurs in small molecules, monomer liquid crystals and polymer liquid crystals. Chapter 1 gives a classification of the various ways in which the meso gens may be connected to the polymer chains. Currently, the bulk of LCP material is based on main chain or longitudinal LCPs for use in engineering applications. The side chain or comb polymers are intended for use in electronics and opto-electronic systems and as surfactants. Many other variants and possibilities exist but their properties have not yet been fully studied or used. In this respect it is hoped that the current work will indicate future possibilities as well as discussing current opinion. v Preface vi Chapters 2 and 3 describe methods of characterizing the mesophases.

Much of the progress towards ever greater miniaturisation made by the electronics industry, from the early days of valves to the development of the transistor and later the integrated circuit, has only been made possible because of the availability of various polymeric materials. Indeed, many new plastics have been developed specifically for electri cal and electronic device applications and as a consequence the plastics and electronics industries have continued to grow side-by-side. Electronic components are one of the few groups of products in which the real cost performance function has declined significantly over the years, and part of the reason can be directly attributed to the availability and performance of new polymeric materials. The evolu tion of the personal computer is a specific example, where improve ments in polymer-based photoresists and plastic encapsulation techni ques have allowed the mass production of high-density memories and microprocessors at a cost which yields machines more powerful than mainframe computers of 30 years ago for little more than the price of a toy. Today, plastic materials are widely used throughout all areas of electrical and electronic device production in diverse applications ranging from alpha particle barriers on memory devices to insulator mouldings for the largest bushings and transformers. Plastics, or more correctly polymers, find use as packaging materials for individual microcircuits, protective coatings, wire and cable insulators, printed circuit board components, die attach adhesives, equipment casings and a host of other applications.

The continually growing contribution of transition metal chemistry to synthetic organic chemistry is, of course, widely recognized. Equally well known is the difficulty in keeping up-to-date with the multifarious reactions and procedures that seem to be spawned at an ever-increasing rate. These can certainly be summarized on the basis of reviews under the headings of the individual transition metals. More useful to the bench organic chemist, however, would be the opposite type of concordance based on the structural type of the desired synthetic product. This is the approach taken in the present monograph, which presents for each structural entity a conspectus of the transition metal-mediated processes that can be employed in its production. The resulting comparative survey should be a great help in devising the optimum synthetic approach for a particular goal. It is presented from an essentially practical viewpoint, with detailed direc tions interspersed in the Houben-Weyl style. The wide scope of the volume should certainly encourage synthetic organic chemists to utilize fully the range and versatility of these transition metal-mediated processes. This book is unique and is useful for engineers as well as scientists who are going to work in any interdisciplinary field connected with elec trochemistry. Science is sure to clarify the truth of nature as well as bring prosperity and an improvement to the welfare of human beings. The origin of the word science is the same as of conscience, which means the truth of our heart. When we consider a scientific and technological subject, first we classify it into the components and/or factors involved, and then we clarify them individually. Second, we combine them to grasp the whole meaning and feature of the subject under discussion. Computers may help us greatly, but how to establish the software that will be most desirable for our purposes is of great importance. We need to make these efforts ourselves, and not decorate with borrowed plumes. With this concept in mind, this book is attractive because the author describes the basic science in electrochemistry and practice, and discusses the electrochemical engineering applications as a combination of science and technology.

The Rolduc Polymer Meetings, of which the contents of this volume represent the third, are already on their way to occupying a unique place in the crowded calendar of symposia on every aspect of polymer science and engineering. They combine manageable meeting size with a theme, 'Integration of Fundamental Polymer Science and Technology', which is often discussed but seldom realized in practice. The technological, or applied, areas of polymers have perhaps received more emphasis historically than those of other allied disciplines. Indeed, various plastic and rubber materials were successful items of commerce long before the macromolecular concept itself was firmly established. The more fundamental aspects of the field were also largely developed in industrial laboratories. The early work of Mark and Meyer at IG Farben, and that of Carrothers and Flory at Du Pont, are good examples of this. The present situation, in which polymers are being applied to more and more demanding end uses, from high performance materials on the one hand to the biomedical and electronics fields on the other, caIls for an ever greater understanding of the basic scientific principles governing their behavior. It is evident, therefore, that interactions between those engaged in the 'pure' and 'applied' parts of the field must be promoted effectively. The Rolduc Polymer Meetings contribute significantly to such interactions, not only by interweaving technological and scientific presentations, but also by providing a forum for the participants to discuss problems of mutual interest in all their complexity.

The 1985 joint Cryogenic Engineering/International Cryogenic Materi als Conference was held on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. About 350 papers were presented at the joint conference on a wide variety of topics in cryogenic science and engineering. This volume of Advances in cryogenic Eogineerlng, the thirty-first in the series which began in 1954, contains most of the papers which were presented at the 1985 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. Each paper was rigorously peer reviewed to maintain the international reputation of Advances as the premier archival publication in the field of cryoscience, engineering, and technology. All the papers published in Volume 31 contain an abstract. A copy of the book will be sent to all maj or abstracting services, which should improve retrieval of the information contained in the published papers. This meeting, ZIRCONIA 'SS - Advances in Zirconia Science and Technology, was held within the framework of the 7tb SIMCER - International Symposium on Ceramics (Bologna, December 14-17, 1988) organized by the Italian Ceramic Center of Bologna, with the sponsorship of ENEA and Agip and the endorsement of the American Ceramic Society, and under the auspices of the European Ceramic Society. In the year 1988, the University of Bologna celebrated its 900th Anniversary. ZIRCONIA '88 was one of the celebration events which brought together academics and researchers from allover the world. Under the chairmanship of Prof. C. Palmonari, Director of the Italian Ceramic Center of the University of Bologna, the Organizing Committee consisting of J. Castaing (C.N.R.S. Meudon, France), S. Meriani (University of Trieste, Italy), V. Prodi (Un-iversity of Bologna, Italy) and J. The aim of ZIRCONIA '88 was to follow the stream of the well known International Conferences on the Science and Technology of zj rconia held in Cleveland, Ohio (1980), Stuttgart, Federal Republic of Germany (1983) and Tokyo, Japan (1986). SIMCER's goal was to bring together not only scientists and engineers directly involved with advanced ceramics but also a larger audience connected to the nearby Italian Ceramic District of Sassuolo.

Reaction Engineering of Step Growth Polymerization
The literature in polymerization reaction engineering has bloomed sufficiently in the last several years to justify our attempt in putting together this book. Rather than offer a comprehensive treatment of the entire field, thereby duplicating earlier texts as well as some ongoing bookwriting efforts, we decided to narrow down our aim to step growth polymerization systems. This not only provides us the lUxury of a more elaborate presentation within the constraints of production costs, but also enables us to remain on somewhat familiar terrain. The style and format we have selected are those of a textbook. The first six chapters present the principles of step growth polymerization. These are quite general, and can easily be applied in such diverse and emerging fields as polymerization applications in photolithography and microelec- tronics. A detailed discussion of several important step growth polymeriz- ations follows in the next five chapters. One could cover the first six chapters of this book in about six to eight weeks of a three-credit graduate course on polymerization reactors, with the other chapters assigned for reading. This could be followed by a discussion of chain-growth and other polymeriz- ations, with which our material blends well. Alternately, the entire contents of this book could be covered in a course on step growth systems alone.
