Writing Across the Chemistry Curriculum: An Instructors Handbook
Useful in all undergraduate and graduate chemistry courses. * One of the current challenges facing science educators is that of student writing skills. There is a widespread (and correct) impression that science students cannot write and that they need to learn how if they are to succeed as professionals. * Writing-across-the-curriculum programs, offered at a number of institutions, are designed to improve students' rhetorical and writing skills by requiring written coursework in all or most courses (including courses that have traditionally been more quantitative, like chemistry and physics). * Designed exclusively for Instructors, this book discusses issues surrounding the implementation of writing-across-the-curriculum programs in physical science, particularly chemistry. For those who are considering or already offering such programs, this book is a rich resource of clear, practical, step-by-step suggestions and other advice.

Peer-LED Team Learning: A Guidebook
Peer-Led Team Learning is an innovative model in science education. Student-leaders (peers) guide the activities of small groups of students in weekly Workshop meetings. The students work through challenging problems that are designed to be solved cooperatively. The peer leaders are trained to ensure that the students are actively and productively engaged with the material and with the each other. This methodology offers a number of educational opportunities: the supportive format encourages questions and discussions that lead to conceptual understanding; students learn to work in teams and to communicate more effectively; peer leaders learn teaching and group management skills. Designed exclusively for instructors, this unique book explains the theory behind peer-led team learning, offers suggestions for successful implementation (including how to write effective group problems and how to train peer leaders), discusses how to evaluate the success of the program, and answers frequently asked questions.

Peer-Led Team Learning: A Handbook for Team Leaders
For courses in Cooperative Learning. Peer-Led Team Learning is an innovate model in science education. Student leaders (peers) guide the activities of small groups of students in weekly Workshop meetings. The students work through challenging problems that are designed to be solved cooperatively. The peer leaders are trained to ensure that the students are actively an productively engaged with the material and with each other. This methodology offers a number of educational opportunities: the supportive format encourages questions and discussions that lead to conceptual understanding; students learn to work in teams and to communicate more effectively; peer leaders learn teaching and group management skills. Two of the five books in this series provide students, instructors, learning specialists, and peer leaders with all of the materials they need to successfully implement this new teaching methodology. Three other books provide specific materials for introductory chemistry courses. This book, On Becoming a Peer Leader , is designed for peer leaders. Part I provides background, advice, and scenarios on areas such as learning theory, group dynamics, and conflict resolution. Part II is an extensive anthology of readings in related areas.

Chemistry Conceptests: A Pathway to Interactive Classrooms
ConcepTests, based on work done in the physics classroom by Eric Mazur at Harvard University, are a simple yet effective method for teaching science. They involve asking students to quickly provide the answer to a conceptual question during the course of a lecture, and then, if there is disagreement about the answer, to work in groups to discuss the problem. Numerous instructors are already making use of this approach in courses across the curriculum. The goal of ConcepTests is to foster active student learning, even in a large lecture environment. Engaging students in the learning process has been shown to increase classroom attendance, improve student learning of and attitude toward chemistry, and reduce attrition. This is the first book designed to assist instructors who are interested in implementing ConcepTests in their chemistry courses. It explains what a ConcepTest is, how to craft one, how to implement this technique (with special attention paid to large classrooms), and it provides a number of tools that will help instructors use ConcepTests with a minimum of effort.
