Single Molecule Science: Physical Principles and Models
The observation and manipulation of individual molecules is one of the most exciting developments in modern molecular science. Single Molecule Science: Physical Principles and Models provides an introduction to the mathematical tools and physical theories needed to understand, explain, and model single-molecule observations. This book explains the physical principles underlying the major classes of single-molecule experiments such as fluorescence measurements, force-probe spectroscopy, and nanopore experiments. It provides the framework needed to understand single-molecule phenomena by introducing all the relevant mathematical and physical concepts, and then discussing various approaches to the problem of interpreting single-molecule data. The essential concepts used throughout this book are explained in the appendices and the text does not assume any background beyond undergraduate chemistry, physics, and calculus. Every effort has been made to keep the presentation self-contained and derive results starting from a limited set of fundamentals, such as several simple models of molecular dynamics and the laws of probability. The result is a book that develops essential concepts in a simple yet rigorous way and in a manner that is accessible to a broad audience.

Plants that Fight Cancer, Second Edition
Plants that Fight Cancer, Second Edition, is a compilation that reviews cancer treatment and research-based information on the plant kingdom as the source of both known and novel chemical moieties and mixtures, many of them still under identification. This new edition follows the organization of the first book with a considerable expansion of content that more than doubles the volume of information. Divided into four segments, the first part is dedicated to a review of our current knowledge of cancer, the different types and incidence, the molecular pathways of the disease, and the various treatment protocols, with an emphasis on chemotherapy. The second part is a brief journey in pharmacognosy, with detailed information about each of the fourteen different chemical groups of plant secondary metabolites, their use in cancer chemotherapy, and updated information on the biotechnological production of the most representative compounds in clinical practice. The third part of the book comprises six chapters dedicated to either plant chemotherapeutical approaches to specific cancer types (e.g. bladder, prostate) or specific groups of plant secondary metabolites with novel and promising properties for cancer treatment (e.g. naphthoquinones, lectins, phenanthridone alkaloids). The fourth part, containing investigative information on almost 300 individual plant species with established anticancer properties, either on a clinical or in vitro level, is with no doubt the most analytical. This new edition contains chapters on cytotoxic phenanthridone alkaloid constituents of the Amaryllidaceae; naphthoquinone-contained anticancer terrestrial plants; polyphenols and cancer immunology; medicinal plant product-based fabrication nanoparticles (Au and Ag) and their anticancer effects; bladder and prostate cancer; and plant lectins in cancer treatment. Quantitation and Mass Spectrometric Data of Drugs and Isotopically Labeled Analogs
The analysis of drugs and their metabolites in biological media are now expected to routinely achieve +/- 20% accuracy in the ng/mL concentration level. Therefore, the availability and the selection of quality ion-pairs designating the analytes and their isotopically labeled analogs (ILAs) are important considerations in achieving the accuracy of quantitation results. Assisting scientists with this process, Quantitation and Mass Spectrometric Data of Drugs and Isotopically Labeled Analogs provides an extremely valuable reference for labs involved in the analysis of therapeutic and abused drugs. Part One of this comprehensive volume illustrates approaches, mechanisms, and challenges pertaining to the use of isotopic analogs as internal standards for drug quantitation. The second section is a systematic compilation of full-scan mass spectra of drugs and their analogs, as parent compounds and as derivatives resulting from various chemical derivatization approaches, commonly encountered in today's labs. Based on the mass spectra data presented in the second section, Part Three provides corresponding tables of ion-pairs which can potentially be adapted to designate the drugs and their isotopic analogs in the analytical processes. Relative quality of these ion-pairs (cross-contribution to the intensity of these ions by their isotopic analogs) is included in these tables. With more than 1500 full-scan mass spectra and quick access data tables, this text represents the authors' years of work compiling mass spectra of the many chemical derivatization forms of drugs, their metabolites, and their isotopically labeled counterparts. The unparalleled scope of this compilation makes it a critical one-stop reference for those involved in drug analyses of biological specimens and interpretation of results.

Bitter Nemesis: The Intimate History of Strychnine
Encouraged by the medicinal success of quinine, early 19th century scientists hoped strychnine, another plant alkaloid with remarkable properties, might also become a new weapon against disease. Physicians tried for over a century, despite growing evidence to the contrary, to treat everything from paralysis to constipation with it. But strychnine proved only to be disappointingly deadly-relegating its fate almost entirely to animal control, the dangerous adulteration of foods, and criminal exploits. The NOTORIOUS and TRUE story of how a POISONOUS alkaloid... Bitter Nemesis: The Intimate History of Strychnine presents a scholarly and compelling history of this fascinating chemical substance from its discovery to present times. A renowned editor for the Dictionary of Natural Products, Dr. John Buckingham fuses his eclectic interests into an extraordinary mix of original research spanning the realms of history, medicine, literature, chemistry, and forensics. ...Changed the course of HISTORY! Uncovering details and logistics from the earliest experiments performed in an era when proper scientific trials for testing new drugs were still in their infancy, the author explores strychnine's trial-and-error contributions to scientific, medical, and forensic developments. He also investigates historical milestones and the perception of strychnine in popular culture-including criminal notoriety, accidental misuse, and new claims of strychnine's benefits that extend through to the present day. Juxtaposing the real trials, mistrials, and persistent curiosity associated with one of history's most notorious pharmaceutical failures, Bitter Nemesis offers rare insight into the anarchic, yet inspired landscape, practices, and legacy of 19th century science.

Chemistry of Sustainable Energy
Understanding the chemistry underlying sustainable energy is central to any long-term solution to meeting our future energy needs. Chemistry of Sustainable Energy presents chemistry through the lens of several sustainable energy options, demonstrating the breadth and depth of research being carried out to address issues of sustainability and the global energy demand. The author, an organic chemist, reinforces fundamental principles of chemistry as they relate to renewable or sustainable energy generation throughout the book. Written with a qualitative, structural bias, this survey text illustrates the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of chemistry research with examples from the literature to provide relevant snapshots of how solutions are developed, providing a broad foundation for further exploration. It examines those areas of energy conversion that show the most promise of achieving sustainability at this point, namely, wind power, fuel cells, solar photovoltaics, and biomass conversion processes. Next-generation nuclear power is addressed as well. This book also covers topics related to energy and energy generation that are closely tied to understanding the chemistry of sustainable energy, including fossil fuels, thermodynamics, polymers, hydrogen generation and storage, and carbon capture. It offers readers a broad understanding of relevant fundamental chemical principles and in-depth exposure to creative and promising approaches to sustainable energy development.

Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation
Reflecting the substantial increase in popularity of quadrupole ion traps and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers, Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation explores the historical origins of the latest advances in this expanding field. It covers new methods for trapping ions, such as the Orbitrap (TM), the digital ion trap (DIT), the rectilinear ion trap (RIT), and the toroidal ion trap; the development and application of the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the quadrupole linear ion trap (LIT); and the introduction of high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS). After a combined appreciation and historical survey of mass spectrometry and a discussion of how improved capabilities for microfabrication have led to interest in arrays of ion traps, the book examines the theory and practice of the Orbitrap mass analyzer, the rectangular waveform-driven DIT mass spectrometer, FAIMS, and ion traps with circular geometries. It next discusses ion accumulation for increasing sensitivity in FT-ICR spectrometry, a radio frequency-only-mode event for Penning traps in FT MS, and an FT operating mode applied to a 3D-QIT. The text then presents three behavioral aspects of quadrupole rod sets, before illustrating the development of the 3D-QIT in recent years. The final chapters explore photodissociation in ion traps and the chemical and photochemical studies of metal dication complexes in a 3D-QIT.
