Phytochemical Dictionary of the Leguminosae
The Phytochemical Dictionary of the Leguminosae is the first of a new type of reference source giving phytochemical records for all legumes (plants in the Pea family - Leguminosae or Fabaceae). The precise chemical substances found, the organs in which they occur (eg the leaf or the seed) and the bibliographic citation are given for each plant species recorded. These are accompanied by extensive supporting botanical, chemical, geographical and bibliographic information for each plant and substance. Over 4,000 chemical substances occurring in 2,000 plant species are contained within 20,000 entries. The Leguminosae is one of the world's most economically important groups of plants, including peas, beans, soya and chickpeas, and provides the world's major source of nitrogen fixed from the atmosphere. As this book contains detailed, comprehensive and up-to-date phytochemical data on this family, available for the first time in a single source, it will prove invaluable to all those working in the food, pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, as well as in botanical, natural product and taxonomic research. This new work has been compiled as a joint project by two specialist organisations, the International Legume Database & Information Service (ILDIS) and the Chapman & Hall Chemical Database (CHCD). Coverage includes both wild and cultivated species from all over the world. The primary literature used is current to mid-1992. The book is divided into two volumes, the first containing the Plant Section and the second the Chemical Section. The two are linked by extensive cross-referencing and each section has its own indexes. Volume 1 of the dictionary is unique in that it lists not only all legume species from which chemical substances are reported, but also lists under each species what the substances are and in which organs they occur. The substances are grouped together under types of compounds and the original sources are cited. This part is organized alphabetically by genus and species name, followed by a Plant Name Index and Plant Constituent Index. This part of the dictionary may be used in two ways. By selecting a plant species of interest, the reader will see the precise listing of substances reported and the organs in which they occur. Alternatively, by using the Plant Constituent Index, the reader should find a full listing of all legume species from which a particular substance is reported, and from which the main entries for these plant species can be located. Each species entry is annotated with the plant's geographical distribution, its taxonomic details (common name, synonyms used in the phytochemical literature, etc.), botanical data on, for example, life form and economic uses, and reference citations. The problems of nomenclature and synonymy have been overcome for both plant names and substance names. Plant names and classification have been verified using the ILDIS plant taxonomic database: records for the same species originally published under different names are united in the dictionary. Similarly, substance names and classes have been verified using the Chapman & Hall Chemical Database: records for the same substance under different names in the literature are likewise united in the dictionary. Volume 2 is a Chemical Dictionary giving key chemical data on all substances occurring in the Leguminosae, matching those reported in Part 1. This part is taken from the Chapman & Hall Chemical Database and its layout and format is uniform with the renowned Dictionary of Organic Compounds. Each substance has (where appropriate): alternative names, structure diagram, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number, molecular formula and weight and Type of Compound. These substances are indexed by Chemical Name, Molecular Formula and CAS Registry Number to allow rapid location of the information required.

Dictionary of Terpenoids
Terpenoids are an important class of natural products which exhibit an exceptionally wide range of structures. They are extremely widespread in nature and are important in the food and pharmaceutical industries and in botanical and taxonomic research. This Dictionary of Terpenoids is a useful reference for all those working in these fields The structures, bibliographies and physical properties of over 20,000 terpenoids are presented in 9,000 entries - represent the vast majority of all known natural terpenoids together with the most important semisynthetic terpenoids. The bibliographic and occurrence data is comprehensive for rare terpenoids and extensive for the common terpenoids. The coverage includes biosynthetic nor-, homo- and other modified terpenoids; also documented are closely related synthetic compounds of importance in the perfumery and flavouring industries. The data has been derived from the current literature (to 1991). The contents of the Dictionary are founded on the Dictionary of Organic Compounds with the addition of many new compounds. Every entry has been re-edited and enhanced by standardization of structures, nomenclature and data and by the addition of very large amounts of material. The entries are organized according to the structural class of terpenoid in approximately 350 groups, in order of increasing complexity, and within each category bringing together closely related substances within the same entry to allow a rapid overview, and allowing ready comparisons and generalizations to be made. Data in each entry includes accurately drawn structure diagrams, biological and physical properties and stereoisomers and derivatives. An labelled bibliography leads the user to the primary literature. Data is indexed by Name, Molecular Formula, Species and CAS Registry Number. The Species Index is particularly useful in allowing immediate access to the contents by the biological route. All indexes are computer-generated and are free of indexing errors. This book should be of interest to researchers and librarians in organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, taxonomy, biology and food science.

What is Life?: How Chemistry Becomes Biology
Seventy years ago, Erwin Schrodinger posed a simple, yet profound, question: 'What is life?'. How could the very existence of such extraordinary chemical systems be understood? This problem has puzzled biologists and physical scientists both before, and ever since. Living things are hugely complex and have unique properties, such as self-maintenance and apparently purposeful behaviour which we do not see in inert matter. So how does chemistry give rise to biology? Did life begin with replicating molecules, and, if so, what could have led the first replicating molecules up such a path? Now, developments in the emerging field of 'systems chemistry' are unlocking the problem. Addy Pross shows how the different kind of stability that operates among replicating entities results in a tendency for certain chemical systems to become more complex and acquire the properties of life. Strikingly, he demonstrates that Darwinian evolution is the biological expression of a deeper and more fundamental chemical principle: the whole story from replicating molecules to complex life is one continuous coherent chemical process governed by a simple definable principle. The gulf between biology and the physical sciences is finally becoming bridged.

Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics: Volume 5 Surface Flaws, Statistics, and Microcracking
These volumes, 5 and 6, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA on July 15, 16, and 17, 1981. These proceedings constitute the third pair of volumes of a con tinuing series of conferences. Volumes 1 and 2 were from the 1973 symposium and volumes 3 and 4 from a 1977 symposium, both of which were also held at Penn State. The theme of this conference, as the previous two, focused on the mechanical behavior of ceramic materials in terms of the characteristics of cracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture process. The 78 contributed papers by over 100 authors and co-authors represent the current state of the field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems of interest to those concerned with brittle fracture. The program chairmen gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance for the Symposium provided by the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research. Without their support, the magnitude and quality of this conference simply would not have been possible.

Chemistry of Pesticides
This book was originally published as a Russian edition in mid-1968. It represented the first single-volume discussion of chemical pest control and of the detailed chemistry.of all modern pesticide chemicals since D. E. H. Frear's classical book on this same subject, first published in 1942 (van No- strand) with the latest (third) edition in 1955. Since 1955 many new pesti- cide chemicals have achieved commercial status, and many of the older ones have been supplanted. There is no up-to-date equivalent of this present volume in the world literature, with the exception of the encyclopedic and largely biologically oriented two-volume work Chemie der Pflanzenschutz- und Schadlingsbekampfungsmittel (R. Wegler, ed.) published by Springer- Verlag in 1970. Professor Melnikov has updated the 1968 Russian edition, with emphasis on the primary Russian sources yet with excellent world- wide coverage of the latest chemicals to approach field stature in modern chemical pest control, for the present translation.

Handbook of Ceramics Grinding and Polishing
Focusing on the machining of ceramic materials such as silicon nitride, silicon carbide, and zirconia, this handbook meets the growing need in industry for a clear understanding of modern improvements in ceramic processing. The presentation is international in scope, with techniques and information represented from the USA, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom countries that have made important contributions to the field. The 20 expert chapter authors explore the challenge of reducing the costs of machining operations, a continuing problem in an industry where ceramic parts must be machined into final form to achieve a proper fit. The handbook reveals that the abrasive machining of ceramic materials will always be a requirement because of the difficulty of controlling parts dimensions at the high temperatures required in their creation. The contributors then explain the properties and characteristics of ceramics, the various types of abrasive processes, and typical tests used in the procedures. An entire section of the handbook concerns grinding tools, their conditioning, lubrication, and cooling, checking for wear on the tools, and using them efficiently. The book also examines modern honing and superfinishing tools and machines, and describes advances in the technology, as well as lapping and polishing techniques using chemical compounds and ultrasound. Ceramics is a field where more advanced products are sure to appear. Many of the products will require advanced, better-controlled processing technologies; vastly improved productivity in manufacturing; and increased product reliability. The contributors to this Handbook will assist readers in the attainment of these important goals.

A Guide to the Elements
Newly updated throughout, and now covering 118 elements, this crystal-clear guide to the periodic table illuminates the basic concepts of chemistry as it traces the history and development of our knowledge of the material world. In this fascinating volume, Albert Stwertka makes complex ideas and terms easily understandable, drawing upon engaging historical anecdotes and everyday examples to clarify the text, which is complemented by numerous illustrations, many in full color. Since the second edition, many new elements have been named and discovered, including Darmstadtium, Roentgenium, and Copernicium, and the elements currently called Ununtrium, Ununpentium, Ununhexium, Ununseptium, and Ununoctium. The third edition provides thorough coverage of all these new discoveries. In addition to the new elements, Stwertka has brought the information about the elements in the second edition up-to-date, based on the latest research. He discusses a cylindrical molecule of carbon known as a nanotube, which has become a do-all wonder substance, touted for use in everything from X-ray machines to paint. A new form of the element boron has been found that is nearly as hard as diamond. Its superior heat resistance could make it attractive for certain industrial uses. And a new particle detector using ultra-pure liquid xenon has been constructed beneath 5,000 feet of rock in Italy to detect dark matter. Stwertka also covers the 2010 Nobel-winning work on graphene, an ultrathin form of carbon that is vital for future generations of computers and touch screens, the discovery of new superconductors, and the development of new uses for the rare earth elements. Bringing the periodic table into the 21st century, this engrossing guide to the elements will fascinate everyone curious about the basic building blocks of the material world.

Chemical Mutagens: Principles and Methods for Their Detection Volume 8
Volume 8 of Chemical Mutagens covers a wide range of topics in this continuously changing field. This volume includes chapters on the detection of genetic damage in mammalian sperm both at specific loci and over the entire genome. The discussion of in vitro techniques for working with mammalian cells covers not only specific locus assays but also cellular activation systems. Another chapter extensively discusses the need for a revised protocol for the micronucleus assay. Structure activity relationships are investigated in a chapter dealing with hair dye constituents. One of the most comprehensive chapters deals with problems associated with the detection of mutagenic effects in defined human populations. Finally, there is a detailed presentation of a comprehensive study tabulating the genetic bioassay data on some known or suspected human carcinogens. In keeping with our policy of publishing important legislation in the area of chemical mutagens, we have also included the Council of the European Communities Directive of 18 September 1979. Computer Simulation of Biomolecular Systems: Theoretical and Experimental Applications
The third volume in the series on Computer Simulation of Biomolecular Systems continues with the format introduced in the first volume [1] and elaborated in the second volume [2]. The primary emphasis is on the methodological aspects of simulations, although there are some chapters that present the results obtained for specific systems of biological interest. The focus of this volume has changed somewhat since there are several chapters devoted to structure-based ligand design, which had only a single chapter in the second volume. It seems useful to set the stage for this volume by quoting from my preface to Volume 2 [2]. The long-range 'goal of molecular approaches to biology is to describe living systems in terms of chemistry and physics. Over the last fifty years great progress has been made in applying the equations representing the underlying physical laws to chemical problems involv ing the structures and reactions of small molecules. Corresponding studies of mesoscopic systems have been undertaken much more recently. Molecular dynamics simulations, which are the primary focus of this volume, represent the most important theoretical approach to macromolecules of biological interest. ...

Understanding Language: Man or Machine
This textbook is intended for graduate students in computer science and linguistics who are interested in developing expertise in natural language processing (NLP) and in those aspects of artificial intelligence which are concerned with computer models oflanguage comprehension. The text is somewhat different from a number of other excellent textbooks in that its foci are more on the linguistic and psycho linguistic prerequisites and on foundational issues concerning human linguistic behavior than on the description of the extant models and algorithms. The goal is to make the student, undertaking the enormous task of developing computer models for NLP, well aware of the major diffi culties and unsolved problems, so that he or she will not begin the task (as it has often been done) with overoptimistic hopes or claims about the generalizability of models, when such hopes and claims are incon sistent either with some aspects of the formal theory or with known facts about human cognitive behavior. Thus, I try to enumerate and explain the variety of cognitive, linguistic, and pragmatic data which must be understood and formalized before they can be incorporated into a computer model.

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM): Principles, Modes of Operation & Limitations
With the wide application of nanotechnology in scientific research as well as in industrial product development, it is urgent to develop appropriate tools for investigating and manipulating molecules, especially macromolecules at the nanoscale level. Different microscopes are typical equipment. Due to the high resolution, being maximally close to samples' original status and the low requirement of sample preparation, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied as a nanotechnology tool since it was invented in 1986. As this equipment utilises the force between the sample and scanning tip rather than the light signal as used by many other microscopes, samples with different optical properties can be investigated with AFM without limitations. AFM has many modes including contact mode and non-contact mode, which can be applied for achieving different purposes depending on the samples' properties and final purposes. Recent force spectroscopy can measure the interaction forces of the tip-sample, which is a function of distance between the tip and the sample, thus called a force-distance curve. Force spectroscopy can also be conducted with static or dynamic modes, which has been widely applied in many fields, especially in biophysics for measuring mechanical properties of living organisms or cells. This book focuses on the research on AFM principles, modes of operation and limitation and they are discussed with detailed examples in various fields, ranging from inorganic materials in physics to organic materials in food science, biomedical science, chemistry and others.
