Threats to the Quality of Groundwater Resources: Prevention and Control
This book focuses on scientific and technological aspects of groundwater-resources assessment and surveillance. It describes relevant risks and investigates selected techniques for the monitoring and mitigation of the individuated threats to groundwater quality. The authors discuss the concepts of groundwater-resources protection and offer examples of both geogenic and anthropogenic degradation of groundwater quality, such as heavy metals from mining activities and natural water-rock interactions, as well as risk of contamination due to geological CO2 storage practices etc. The volume also covers non-invasive monitoring techniques and briefly addresses innovative sensor technologies for the online assessment of water quality. Furthermore, the role played by geochemical techniques, the potential of environmental isotopes and the support provided by physical modelling are highlighted. The chapters guide the reader through various viewpoints, according to the diverse disciplines involved, without aiming to be exhaustive, but instead picking representative topics for their relevance in the context of groundwater protection and control. This book will be of interest to advanced students, researchers, policy-makers and stakeholders at various levels.

Humic Substances color all waters more or less brown. Their concentrations exceed all carbon of living organisms by at least one order of magnitude. Opposite to former paradigms, they participate in almost any metabolic pathway. They protect against UV-irradation, enable indirect photolysis and, thus, purify hazardous chemicals, they provide inorganic and organic nutrients, may form cryptic genes with DNA and dampen metabolic fluctuations. More recently they can increase adverse effects of hazardous chemicals and they can directly interfere with organisms. The book tries to relate effects to structural features.

Over the last several years it has become apparent to most researchers that interdisciplinary research is the key to success in the sciences' future. The present book exemplifies such interdisciplinary work. Thus, some new derivatives have been prepared by chemists and consecutively analyzed by physicists in order to better understand their physical-chemical properties for future tests to be performed by pharmacists. The book consists of an introductory section and other eight chapters. First, the fundamentals of infrared, Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and those of the theoretical methods employed for the vibrational prediction modes are highlighted. The SERS investigations illustrated in the following chapters are focused on different kinds of drugs: tranquilizers and sedatives, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamins, drugs with anti-bacterial properties, etc. Since there is an increased interest in designing highly effective and controllable SERS-active substrates, a few newly developed substrates that could contribute to a deeper understanding and knowledge of the adsorption behavior of various types of molecules of pharmaceutical and medical interest are also presented.

Ultrathin Electrochemical Chemo- and Biosensors: Technology and Performance
Traditional biological sensors, based on enzymatic receptors and potentiometric or amperometric transducers are well reviewed and are nowadays even included extensively in many textbooks. The editors of this volume, the 2nd in the new Springer Series on Chemical and Biosensors, have focussed exclusively on alternative types of chemical and biological sensors or sensor-like structures. Special attention is given to sensor principles based on the use of linear or non-linear impedance spectroscopy. After self-assembled monolayers have become a viable technology for the immobilization of organic molecules on electrodes and for the formation of covalently stabilized receptor layers and even more sophisticated organic nano- and microstructures, this has led to the development of numerous analytical applications of impedometric sensor methods. These new and very promising types of sensors, their technology and performance in real world applications form the main topic of this book written by leading experts from around the world.

New Developments in Polymer Analytics I
The two volumes New Developments in Polymer Analytics deal with recent progress in the characterization of polymers, mostly in solution but also at sur faces. Despite the fact that almost all of the described techniques are getting on in years, the contributions are expected to meet the readers interest because either the methods are newly applied to polymers or the instrumentation has achieved a major breakthrough leading to an enhanced utilization by polymer scientists. The first volume concentrates on separation techniques. H. Pasch summarizes the recent successes of multi dimensional chromatography in the characteriza tion of copolymers. Both, chain length distribution and the compositional het erogeneity of copolymers are accessible. Capillary electrophoresis is widely and successfully utilized for the characterization of biopolymers, particular of DNA . It is only recently that the technique has been applied to the characterization of water soluble synthetic macromolecules. This contribution of Grosche and Engelhardt focuses on the analysis of polyelectrolytes by capillary electophore sis. The last contribution of the first volume by Coelfen and Antonietti summa rizes the achievements and pitfalls of field flow fractionation techniques .The major drawbacks in the instrumentation have been overcome in recent years and the triple F techniques are currently advancing to a powerful competitor to size exclusion chromatography.

It is well established that in multicomponent specimens, the relative x-ray intensity generated by the electron bombardment - i.e. the intensity ratio of the characteristic x-ray radiation emitted under identical experimental conditions by the specimen and a calibration standard - is not directly correlated to the elementary mass concentration. The use of a wide scale of carefully prepared homogeneous calibration standards is generally very tedious and restricted to binar)' systems. For more complex specimens, the conversion of recorded x-ra)' intensity ratios to elementary mass concentration requires, besides carefule selection of experimental conditions, an adequate correction calculation to take account oi' the various physical phenomenas occurring in the tarp;et - electron retardation, electron backseattering, x-ray excitation efficieney, fluorescence enhaneement by eharaeteristic and continuous radiation and x-ray mass absorption.

The Llobregat: The Story of a Polluted Mediterranean River
The Llobregat belongs to the most thoroughly studied rivers in Europe and is a paradigm of the confluence of human and natural disturbances in a single basin. Because of its location in a very densely populated region and its Mediterranean character, the Llobregat supports a mixture of irregular flow, water abstraction, excess nutrients, mining debris, and a wide array of pollutants. The aquatic organisms strive to survive in a dramatically changing river that passes through a succession of dams, weirs and channels. The long-term river monitoring as well as the research that has been carried out in the river for a long time have provided an extensive knowledge of these disturbances and their effects on the biological communities. This book highlights the available information, with emphasis on the hydrological, chemical and biological elements interspersed in the river. Experts in the field discuss the main nutrient patterns and pollutant occurrence and the responses of the biological quality elements as well as the river ecosystem to the overall natural and man-made influences.

Energetic Materials at Extreme Conditions
David I.A. Millar's thesis explores the effects of extreme conditions on energetic materials. His study identifies and structurally characterises new polymorphs obtained at high pressures and/or temperatures. The performance of energetic materials (pyrotechnics, propellants and explosives) can depend on a number of factors including sensitivity to detonation, detonation velocity, and chemical and thermal stability. Polymorphism and solid-state phase transitions may therefore have significant consequences for the performance and safety of energetic materials. In order to model the behaviour of these important materials effectively under operational conditions it is essential to obtain detailed structural information at a range of temperatures and pressures.

STM Investigation of Molecular Architectures of Porphyrinoids on a Ag(111) Surface: Supramolecular Ordering, Electronic Properties and Reactivity
The functionalization of surfaces on the nanoscale is one of the most fascinating and at the same time challenging topics in science. It is the key to tailoring catalysts, sensors, or devices for solar energy conversion, whose functional principle is based on the interaction of an active solid surface with another (liquid or gaseous) phase. As an example, planar transition metal complexes adsorbed on solid supports are promising candidates for novel heterogeneous catalysts. An important feature of these catalysts, compared to supported metal clusters, is the fact that the active sites, i. e. , the coordinated metal centers with their vacant axial coordination sites, are well de?ned and uniform. Metalloporphyrinoids are particularly suitable in this respect because they combine a structure forming element-the rigid molecular frame, which often induces long range order-with an active site, the coordinated metal ion. Its planar coordination environment leaves two axial coordination sites available for additional ligands. If adsorbed on a surface, one of these axial sites is occupied by the underlying substrate. The resulting electronic interaction with the surface can be used to tailor the electronic structure and thereby the reactivity of the metal center. The remaining site is free for the attachment of molecules (sensor functionality) and/or operates as a reaction center (single-site catalysis). Prototype examples are omnipresent in nature, where in particular metallo-tetrapyrrols play a decisive role in important biological processes, with the most prominent examples being iron porphyrins in heme, magnesium porphyrins in chlorophyll, and cobalt corrin in vitamin B12.

Carbon Nanotubes as Platforms for Biosensors with Electrochemical and Electronic Transduction
The thesis by Merce Pacios exploits properties of carbon nanotubes to design novel nanodevices. The prominent electrochemical properties of carbon nanotubes are used to design diverse electrode configurations. In combination with the chemical properties and (bio)functionalization versatility, these materials prove to be very appropriate for the development of electrochemical biosensors. Furthermore, this work also evaluates the semiconductor character of carbon nanotubes (CNT) for sensor technology by using a field effect transistor configuration (FET). The CNT-FET device has been optimized for operating in liquid environments. These electrochemical and electronic CNT devices are highly promising for biomolecule sensing and for the monitoring of biological processes, which can in the future lead to applications for rapid and simple diagnostics in fields such as biotechnology, clinical and environmental research.

Periodic Table with Nuclides and Reference Data
There are many kinds of nuc1ear data books; however some are too much specialized, while others have an arrangement of information which is inconvenient for students to use. With this book, we want to amend these situations. Handbooks of natural sciences must be exact and fair in their presentation of materials and they must be logical and convenient to use. If the users can develop new ideas or gain new insights from the books, they can be judged as valuable. The role of handbooks is not only to give a systematic representation of past knowledge, but also to serve as a basis for intellectual activity leading to future development. The purpose of this data book arises from the points described above. The chart of the nuc1ides which is frequently consulted by radioisotope users is not always convenient. By comparison, our Periodic Table with Nuc1ides has been devised with this in mind. It has been our experience that properties of a desired nuclide could be found in a much shorter time in the Periodic Table with Nuc1ides than in other nuc1ide charts. Additionally, by placing the ~-stabi1ity line within the nuc1ides in the table, the users may derive unam biguous ideas on the stability of the nuc1ides and the paths related to the creation of stable elements in the universe.

Biologically Active Molecules: Identification, Characterization and Synthesis Proceedings of a Seminar on Chemistry of Biologically Active Compounds and Modern Analytical Methods, Interlaken, September 5-7, 1988
Over the past few years there has been a remarkable and rapid development of modern analytical methods, and the fields of nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry have been no exception. In addition to being able to do more and faster , new innovative techniques have also arisen to contribute to a growing understanding of the relationship between chemical structure and biological activity. In order to explore a few of the more interesting points of those developments and applications, a seminar From Biological Activity to Structure was organized from September 5-7, 1988, at Interlaken. The four invited speakers, Richard M. Caprioli, Howard R. Morris, Wolfgang Steglich and Dudley H. Williams were kind enough to attend and discuss many facets of their research, especially methodological and technical developments and their applications to specific problems. Participants were introduced to continuous flow FAB (fast atom bombardment) and its use, for example, in the real time monitoring of biochemical reactions in vitro and in vivo; the structural elucidation of secondary metabolites from fungi; the analysis of molecule-receptor interactions; the determination of posttranslational modifications of peptides; and the location of S-S bridges in determining the tertiary structure of proteins.

Emerging Organic Contaminants in Sludges: Analysis, Fate and Biological Treatment
There are a growing number of new chemicals in the environment that represent an ascertained or potential risk. Many of them can be found in sewage sludge and are the subject of this volume. Experts in the field highlight their occurrence and fate, risks of biosolid use, advanced chemical analysis methods, and degradation techniques with a special focus on biodegradation using fungi. In the final chapter conclusions and trends are offered as a point of departure for future studies. The double-disciplinary approach combining environmental analysis and engineering makes the book a valuable and comprehensive source of information for a broad audience, such as environmental chemists and engineers, biotechnologists, ecotoxicologists and professionals responsible for waste and water management.

Bioanalysis and Biosensors for Bioprocess Monitoring
This special volume on bioanalysis and biosensors for bioprocess monitoring has a twofold target. Firstly, it is dedicated to the 75th birthday ofArmin Fiechter, who was a major driving force among the pioneers to the progress of biochemical engineering. Not only the aseptic connection technique with septa and needles still used until today was established by him, but also the development of the first sterilizable pH electrodes with W Ingold is also credited to him. He made in vivo bio analysis a topic of general interest, for instance by setting up the first chemostat in Switzerland. It was again Armin Fiechter who pushed the use of non invasive exhaust gas analysis in the late 1960s and promoted development and exploita tion of in situ sensors and on line analytical instruments in bioprocessing, among other means, by founding a spin off company. In his laudatio, Karl Schtigerl extends the list of his merits and achievements.
