Elements in Religion and Violence: Mormonism and Violence: The Battles of Zion
In popular culture and scholarship, a consistent trope about Mormonism is that it features a propensity for violence, born of the religion's theocratic impulses and the antinomian tendencies of special revelation. Mormonism and Violence critically assesses the relationship of Mormonism and violence through a close examination of Mormon history and scripture, focusing on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Element pays special attention to violence in the Book of Mormon and the history of the movement, from the 1830s to the present.

A fictional tale full of biblical advice and the description of a growing conflict, true to life, between an evangelizing bible basher and one of his adepts. Among the many things discussed, one is whether or not there will be sex in eternity. This christian bloggish novel is among other things a discussion about what heaven will be like. Will it be like the Muslim's paradise, or like the Christian's heaven? It is interspersed with background events to embellish the story. Also I have interlaced it with my ethical theology to lend backbone to the plot. If you are looking for compelling narrative drive, look away. This is more a fictitious diary full with philosophical ideas, a play of sorts, and is meant to educate rather than to entertain.

The Subversive Evangelical: The Ironic Charisma of an Irreligious Megachurch
Evangelicals have been scandalized by their association with Donald Trump, their megachurches summarily dismissed as religious Walmarts. In The Subversive Evangelical Peter Schuurman shows how a growing group of reflexive evangelicals use irony to critique their own tradition and distinguish themselves from the stereotype of right-wing evangelicalism. Entering the Meeting House - an Ontario-based Anabaptist megachurch - as a participant observer, Schuurman discovers that the marketing is clever and the venue (a rented movie theatre) is attractive to the more than five thousand weekly attendees. But the heart of the church is its charismatic leader, Bruxy Cavey, whose anti-religious teaching and ironic tattoos offer a fresh image for evangelicals. This charisma, Schuurman argues, is not just the power of one individual; it is a dramatic production in which Cavey, his staff, and attendees cooperate, cultivating an identity as an irreligious megachurch and providing followers with a more culturally acceptable way to practise their faith in a secular age. Going behind the scenes to small group meetings, church dance parties, and the homes of attendees to investigate what motivates these reflexive evangelicals, Schuurman reveals a playful and provocative counterculture that distances itself from prevailing stereotypes while still embracing a conservative Christian faith.

Revelation's Essential Truths
The Book of Revelation is the final book of the New Testament, and it is also the last book given by God, and it contains His last advice, instructions and warnings before the Judgment. The Book of Revelation also contains many apocalyptic visions including the plagues, the four horses, seals, bowls, Beasts, the whore, and others. In this book, I will not try to interpret any of the apocalyptic visions, because the Book of Revelation has far many greater truths that we need to learn. The Book of Revelation tells us how to live to receive the Seal of God, and be among the redeemed and how not to avoid the Mark of the Beast, and we need to know this as Judgment Day approaches. And that's far more important than knowing how someone attempts to understand the nature, timing and sequence of the apocalyptic events. with endless speculations as to who the beast, the whore, and the false prophet are, and what is Babylon. You will be blessed, challenged, instructed, warned and perhaps shocked, by this book.

The Wisdom of Jesus, the Son of Sirach, or Ecclesiasticus (Hardcover)
Mary Wilder Tileston examines the Book of Sirach, otherwise known as Ecclesiasticus, faithfully interpreting and presenting its wisdom for the modern reader. Written in the 2nd century B.C., the Book of Sirach remains to this day the lengthiest text of spiritual wisdom to survive from ancient times. Though Ecclesiasticus is only rarely included in printings of the Bible, it is formally accepted as part of the wider Biblical canon by the Catholic church, and several other Christian churches such as the Eastern Orthodox. Protestant denominations tend to consider the work a valuable example of spiritual and life wisdom, worthy of consultation by Christian believers. Ben Sira wrote this text on the inspiration of his father, a man named Jesus, who was himself the son of Sirach. The wisdom displayed in the chapters may be considered the product of a family with an intense, multigenerational affinity for spiritual matters and the existing canon of the Jewish church.

The Ministry of Healing: Testimonies of Scripture, Church Theology and Christian Missions
Have any healing miracles taken place since the Biblical era? is the central question of this thesis by theologian and preacher A. J. Gordon. The author expresses curiosity about whether the miracles of the Middle Ages and later can be relied and verified as a continuation of Christ's spirit in the Christian church. Through deep study and inquiry of the established history, he concludes that the power to heal followers remains with the church - there was no special era of miracle working; God and His powers remain the same in the modern era, as they have right through human history. Although other scholars assert that miracles are something solely of Christ, the disagreement of A. J. Gordon and others represents a split in theological scholarship. For the author, God's intervention in the suffering and sickness of His followers his frequent; the will of the Lord however is variable - He will not prolong the pain of someone whose illness is too great.

The Crises of the Christ: The Birth, Baptism, Temptation and Crucifixion of Jesus - How His Character Shaped Man's Relations with God (Hardcover)
G. Campbell Morgan offers his perspective on the life and actions of Jesus Christ, placing his character in the context of man's relationship with the Lord God. An all-embracing account of the life of Jesus, we are taken chronologically through the existence of the Christ. The circumstances of his birth, his `hidden years' as a youth in Nazareth, his baptism and the temptations in the desert, and his sermons in ancient Judea. His conviction and crucifixion by the Roman occupiers are detailed, as is the Resurrection and the Ascension of Jesus to the heavenly realms. All along the way, G. Campbell Morgan gives us a perspective supported by the words of scripture, demonstrating how the life and accomplishments of Jesus would influence how mankind interacts with the divine. As well as being the founder of Christianity, the sufferings and trials of Jesus became a beacon to many - his ultimate sacrifice, dying upon a crucifix for the sake of mankind's relations with God, was an event of immense gravity.

The Christian View of God and the World: As Centring in the Incarnation, Being the First Series of Kerr Lectures on Creation
The superb analyses of James Orr into the essential nature of Christianity and God in the world are underappreciated classics. This edition includes Orr's notes, appended at the end of each chapter. Based off a series of lectures delivered in the late 19th century, this work delves into the essential truths of the Christian character. What it means to be a follower of Christ, and how the Christian views the world around him, is but the initial foray of an author determined to unveil the meanings behind the spirituality. The place of Jesus as an exemplar to all Christians is investigated, with Orr giving us a variety of scholarly views on how the life and deeds of Christ can and are viewed by believers. Orr then broadens his examination into theism in general: the human being holding a theistic outlook upon the world is sure to derive comfort and meaning from his beliefs. The loss of this is, in the opinion of Orr and the scholars he cites, equivalent to a great misfortune.

The Christian Ministry: With an Inquiry into the Causes of Its Inefficiency
The classic of Christian ministerial thought by Charles Bridges is presented to the reader anew in this superb edition, complete with the author's annotations. The author considered that the ministry's failings in certain core duties sufficient genesis for a book. Why did this failure occur? Had modern priests and ministers lost their way from the tradition and essence of Christian belief? Were corruptions of the heart frequent and getting commoner? These questions are answered with unflinching sincerity: humans, including the ordained, have shortfalls which can only be assuaged by opening one's heart completely to God. The later parts of the text focus upon the essential duties of the churchman: preaching with the aim of uniting congregation and community in an unstinting belief in the Lord is not a simple matter. Rather we discover it to be a diverse practice; the preacher must not only incorporate aspects of the doctrinal and scriptural truths, but be sensitive to the emotions of his churchgoers.

The Sorry Tale: A Story of the Time of Christ (Hardcover)
This new edition of A Sorry Tale reproduces the majestic, spiritual story of ordinary people living in ancient Judea during the time of Jesus Christ. Equal parts history and narrative, A Sorry Tale attempts to present the life of Jesus as an event within the lives of a group of ordinary people. Their daily lives, the sights and sounds of Judea, the bustle of the marketplace, the culture of Roman governance, and the reaction of the city to the arrival of Jesus, whose fame grows as ever-larger crowds attending the sermons. Patience Worth takes effort to build a living, breathing world around Judea, rich in details corroborated by historical studies. Melding the philosophical and spiritual with her studies of Biblical and other records of the period, Patience Worth's stories are unique and thought-provoking. Questions surrounding human religiosity, the social position of the protagonists, and the interplay of Christ's moral message with the political hierarchy, are considered in Worth's narrative.

Bible scholar Marvin R. Vincent evocatively explores how Bible study, reading and interpretation changed across the ages, from early church antiquity to the end of the 19th century. A richly informed and well-written overview of Biblical criticism's history, arranged chronologically from the early church era. Although the author dedicates but short chapters to each specific development, his breezy, straightforward narrative and lucid interpretation of the historical facts render this guide a valuable source of knowledge in the field. Most of Vincent's commentary takes place after the invention of the printing press; it was this device that saw the Bible copied and distributed to a wider audience on ever-greater scale. The growth in literacy in Europe from the 16th to the 19th century greatly accelerated and refined the practice of Biblical study and criticism.

This Bible commentary concerns the Greek versions of the Old Testament, its literary and scholarly qualities, and use as a source for later, English translations of the Biblical text. A study rich in profundity and the author's decisive scholarship, we find within this book a thorough, chapter-by-chapter comparison of the earliest versions of the Bible in Greek. The order and composition of the verses were arranged with the vocabulary differences placed into charts, that the reader may understand all with clarity. Much of Swete's thesis is concerned with the differences between the Alexandrian Old Testament and the Septuagint (commonly referred to as the LXX) - the earliest known iteration of the Bible in Greek. These two versions of the Old Testament differ in certain ways, and it is these divergences which allow for Swete's most detailed commentary.

This fine printing brings together two of Parley P. Pratt's excellent works: A Voice of Warning and Key to the Science of Theology. Key to the Science of Theology is Parley P. Pratt's all-embracing account of religion's impact on everything in day to day life. The author discusses religion, science, and the meaning of life in a passionate and concise way. A Voice of Warning is an instructing guide to the prophesies and the religious system of Mormonism which, at the time of publication, was rapidly gaining followers throughout North America. Yet foremost, it is a warning to honest Christians; by failing to heed the Biblical prophesies, believers will be unprepared to face the truths explained within the Bible, contained within the authoritative messages of the Holy Ghost. Parley P. Pratt was an early figure in the Church of the Latter Day Saints, whose Mormon doctrines became guiding principles for members of the church.

God's Way of Holiness: The Christian Doctrines, as Expressed by Jesus and the Biblical Scripture
With informed readings of scripture, Horatius Bonar discusses the teachings central to Christianity, and the good Christian's relationship to the divine. Various topics are covered in this book's chapters, such as the importance of strengthening the soul to guard against sin, the symbolism and holy power of the crucifix, and how Christ's spirit dwells within Christians, lending support and resolution through times of hardship. What holiness is, and its ancient origins in mankind's interactions with the Lord and his messengers, is detailed. Throughout this study, Horatius Bonar's scholarship is in the fullest evidence. Definitive and emphatic in his guidance, the words are delivered straightforwardly, with little dwelling on the obscure. Primarily through the use of the New Testament scripture, the author seeks to confer an understanding of Christian principles and the veneration of God. Particular attention is paid to the book of Romans, with the interpretations of the Apostle Paul taken.

Biblical Psychology: A Commentary on the Relationship of God with His Creation - Mankind; the Souls, Spirits and Minds of Human Beings
Oswald Chambers reveals the psychological processes in the Bible, framing his commentary through the Biblical concept of the soul, man, and the divine. A thorough examination of the Bible's way of thinking, this book highlights the wisdom of the holy Bible and its value in revealing the workings of the human mind. With relevant quotation of the scriptures, Oswald Chambers demonstrates how the Bible's teachings and recounting of events such as the life of Christ demonstrate and reflect upon human psychology. The author eloquently establishes the connection between the spiritual essence of the human soul, with our physical form, and finally the mind. The relationship of these three constituents of the human being, and its expression upon the pages of scripture, form the central pillar of this instructional text. As a teacher and evangelist, the writer's capacity to educate and explain is in the fullest evidence upon these pages.

Augustine and the Pelagian Controversy: The Doctrines and Theology of Pelagius in the Early Christian Church
St. Augustine's role in the Pelagian controversy, wherein a popular theologian issued beliefs contrary to those of the Catholic order, is explained within. Pelagius was a popular figure in Rome and wider Christendom; thought to have hailed from the British Isles, his multilingualism, learned stature and obvious ascetic leanings made him a well-recognized and appreciated Christian. Years of preaching in Rome in the 4th and 5th centuries affected Pelagius' views; in particular, he felt that those who pled their very humanity was the reason for their sins and wrongdoing were abominable. In his writings, little of which survive to the modern day, Pelagius offers an alternative theology based on readings of the New Testament. The Augustinian notion of original sin - that sin is inherited to all humanity since the fall of Adam and Eve - is rejected by Pelagius, who felt that individual humans have the capacity to shape their own spiritual destiny through both piety and moral living.

Horatio Dresser discusses the things which matter in life - our beliefs, our conduct and deeds, our sense of self and the nature of the physical world around us. As a leading figure in the New Thought religious system, Dresser was experienced with describing the various aspects of life that carry importance in the spiritual context. He broadens the usual discussions of belief in God and faith in Jesus to philosophical topics such the human appreciation for beauty and the notion of fate. How people can use silence to attune and contemplate their beliefs, and how a person's health benefits from such thoughts, is discussed. The author also explains how humans can alter their will in order to secure a better and more contented life, and achieve their desires in a manner which is spiritually and mentally beneficial. This process is gradual, and involves changing habits in how we think and act - the rewards however are substantial.

George Herbert Box discusses here a pseudepigraphic work of the Old Testament; the Apocalypse of Abraham. A prime example of the early apocalyptic literature, no copies of this document survives in Hebrew, Greek or other ancient languages. Although the original manuscript is dated to the late 1st or 2nd century AD, the only surviving manuscript today is in Slavonic script. Despite this, the age and traditional sources of the writing have sparked some interest from religious scholars. The author translates and gives his own commentary to the Apocalypse of Abraham, with hundreds of annotations of the text cross-referencing books of the Old and New Testament. In providing such an exhaustive and heavily annotated analysis, George Herbert Box seeks to prove the value and relevance of this text in the wider Judeo-Christian tradition.

The human affinity for the divine, the steps and character of spiritual attainment, and the enormity of the spirit's power and capacity, are but a few topics at hand. Matheson variously places each chapter in a Biblical or a personal context, quoting relevant passages of scripture as an example or starting point for each chapter. A gifted hymnwriter and preacher, Matheson spent his life in service to God. Though he gradually became blind during childhood and adolescence, he demonstrated a gifted mind in studies of logic and philosophy. His dream to become a minister was fulfilled, and his ministry commenced in the coastal town of Innellan, where his preaching was well-received.

The Gospel of Ra makrishna: Sri Ra makrishna's Spiritual Guidance to a Life of Humility and Walking the Path to God
The sublime words of Sri Ra makrishna are defined by wisdom and humility - his guidance to the spiritual path to the divine is delivered in a simple, lucid and compassionate way. Born in 1836, Ramakrishna experienced unusual visions from a young age; attributing these to the divinity, he vowed to follow the life of a holy man, living an ascetic and simple life alongside a small community of followers, while writing the spiritual tenets that would lead to great renown in his native Bengal. These writings were referred to as the Gospel of Ramakrishna, as they proscribed a spiritual existence from the perspective a man who lived to walk the path to God. Many readers are amazed at the gentle, plain manner with which Ramakrishna dispenses his wisdom - there is very little dryness, or obscure citations of lore. Rather, we receive a practical and compassionate guide to living one's life and adjusting one's attitude to be considerate of others and of the divine forces which inhabit the heavens.

Quakerism: A Religion of Life
Rufus Matthew Jones lays out the tenets of Quaker religion, helping the reader to understand and appreciate the tenets of morality, the beliefs and the customs which comprise the Quaker tradition. Founded in the 17th century as an alternative creed to Puritanism, the Quaker movement was one of the most successful Christian creeds. Its unique interpretation of the message of Christ, and its pioneering ideas of collaboration and cooperation, drove followers to forge great bonds of strength and enterprise. Amid persecution and upheaval in England, many Quakers decided to emigrate to colonial North America - their presence is prominent in the history of New England, and many Quakers would go on to become successful and respected figures in civic life. Rufus Jones was born in Maine to a family with a long history of activity in the Quaker movement. Proving to be an able student of theology and philosophy, his expertise in these subjects is reflected in his lectures and writings.

A Treatise on the Eldership: The Classic Guide to Effective Church Administration for Clergy and Priests Seeking to Imbue Life in the Church
This exceptional work by J. W. McGarvey sets out in detail church governance at the local level; how pastors administrate their congregation, and how a good church should operate. At the time this book was first published in 1870, new churches were being regularly established on the frontiers of the expanding United States. Meanwhile growing populations in the established areas led to a demand for more churches. Knowing how to properly set up and maintain a church was difficult and mistakes were common; thus McGarvey authored these lectures, that readers might comprehend what the office of church eldership entails. The function of the church as a teaching authority, as an organizer of communities towards both common effort and a shared understanding, is discussed. Each chapter focuses upon a different aspect of church administration; how elders are to qualify themselves, arrange to meet, organize for events, and fulfill their duties to the community.

Added Upon: A Story of Spiritual Self-Discovery
Nephi Anderson's classic novel concerns man inhabiting heaven prior to arriving on the Earth, and humanity's spiritual destiny. A treasured and historic storytelling from a Mormon perspective on life, Added Upon offers a spiritual journey which reflects upon the very nature of our reality and existence. Conversations between the spiritual forces that underpin the fate and being of humankind preface the loosely connected reflections of several ordinary families living on Earth. All of these families, in one way or another, ponder the great questions of life; why are we here? What is our purpose? Where will we go after we perish? Such profound queries form the backbone of this novel, and it is through the pursuit of answers that our characters create a unique narration. Incidental appearances of forces beyond, and the author's predictions of the future of humanity, confer a wondrous element to the tale.
