Miracles: God's Presence and Power in Creation
Miracles are not confined to the stories of Scripture; these signs of God's presence and power in creation are experienced throughout our daily existence. Yet cultural challenges and modernity's skepticism have marginalized belief in them as unreasonable and irrational, says Luke Timothy Johnson. In this excellent resource for church professionals, Johnson reclaims Christian belief in miracles as integral to recovering a proper and strong sense of creation, recognizing the validity of personal experience and narrative and asserting the truth-telling quality of myth. His analysis includes: a description of the competing symbolic worldviews that have framed the discussion on miracles, including secular debates and theological imagination; interpretation of miracles consonant with the biblical construction of reality in the Old and New Testaments; suggestions for four areas in the church's life—teaching, preaching, prayer, and pastoral care—that can work together to shape a symbolic world, within which believers can expect, perceive, and celebrate the miracles in everyday life.

Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today's World
The full text, with commentary, of Pope Francis's Apostolic Exhortation Gaudate et Exsultate. In his new apostolic exhortation, Pope Francis offers an inspiring reminder of the universal call to holiness and a practical guide about how to pursue it. While we draw inspiration from the official saints of the church, it falls to each believer to discern his or her own path . . . rather than hopelessly trying to imitate something not meant for them. This is the mission that confronts each Christian: to discover and live out the message that God wants to speak to the world by our lives. In his typical fashion, Pope Francis uses his theme to address dangers in the Church, particularly in those who would transform the Church into a museum piece or the possession of a select few. The true path to holiness, he notes, was offered by Christ in the Beatitudes: a virtual identity card for Christians. In clear and challenging terms he applies these Gospel values to the challenges of our world. This edition includes reflections by Robert Ellsberg, Publisher of Orbis Books and author of The Saints' Guide to Happiness and James Martin, SJ, author of My Life with the Saints.

Be Restored: Trusting God to See Us Through: OT Commentary: 2 Samuel & 1 Chronicles
Our God longs to restore that which is broken. Fractured relationships. Hurting families. Divided churches. No situation is beyond His grace. And most miraculous of all? He chooses to use broken people to heal broken situations. The book of 2 Samuel is a remarkable testimony to this truth. Here we find King David, a godly man reeling from tragic choices, struggling to unify a nation torn apart by civil war. This study looks at God's passion for restoring lives, relationships and His church, by working through those who are simply available to Him.Part of Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe's best-selling “BE” commentary series, BE Restored has now been updated with study questions and a new introduction by Ken Baugh. A respected pastor and Bible teacher, Dr. Wiersbe shares that no broken person is beyond God's power. You'll discover that—no matter your story, no matter your situation—God can use you to bring about restoration in this world.

Read Mark Learn: Luke Vol. 2: A Small Group Bible Study
Read / Mark / Learn is a small group Bible study series that is designed to equip people to study God's Word for themselves. This second volume of studies in Luke continues on from the first volume, starting at chapter 9 verse 51, and follows as Jesus turns His attention towards Jerusalem and the cross. These 26 studies are split into 5 sections: Proclaiming the Saviour's Kingdom, The Growth of the Saviour's Kingdom, The Number of the Saviour's People, The Coming of the Saviour's Kingdom, and Salvation Accomplished. Each study establishes the context, aim, structure and lessons of the passage and shows links with the Old Testament and practical applications and suggestions. There are conversational discussion starters and suggested questions for leading a Bible study.

A Commentary on the Book of the Twelve: The Minor Prophets
The books of the twelve Minor Prophets are some of the least studied by Christians today, but they contain some of the great themes of Scripture, such as God's mercy and judgment, His covenant with Israel, the day of the Lord, and the coming of the Messiah. Arguing for a canonical unity that recognises the Minor Prophets as one cohesive composition, Michael Shepherd explains the historical meaning of each verse of the twelve books and also provides guidance for application and preaching. Pastors, teachers, and serious students of Scripture will find a wealth of insights for understanding the Minor Prophets.

Psalms, Volume 2
Psalms, Volume 2, which is part of the NIV Application Commentary Series, helps readers learn how the message of the Psalms can have the same powerful impact today that it did when they were first written. The majority of Bible commentaries take readers on a one-way trip to the world of the Bible. But they leave them there, assuming that they can somehow make the return journey on their own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application - the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.

Theological Hermeneutics and the Book of Numbers as Christian Scripture
How should Christian readers of scripture hold appropriate and constructive tensions between exegetical, critical, hermeneutical, and theological concerns? This book seeks to develop the current lively discussion of theological hermeneutics by taking an extended test case, the book of Numbers, and seeing what it means in practice to hold all these concerns together. In the process the book attempts to reconceive the genre of commentary by combining focused attention to the details of the text with particular engagement with theological and hermeneutical concerns arising in and through the interpretive work. The book focuses on the main narrative elements of Numbers 11-25, although other passages are included (Numbers 5, 6, 33). With its mix of genres and its challenging theological perspectives, Numbers offers a range of difficult cases for traditional Christian hermeneutics. Briggs argues that the Christian practice of reading scripture requires engagement with broad theological concerns, and brings into his discussion Frei, Auerbach, Barth, Ricoeur, Volf, and many other biblical scholars. The book highlights several key formational theological questions to which Numbers provides illuminating answers: What is the significance and nature of trust in God? How does holiness (mediated in Numbers through the priesthood) challenge and redefine our sense of what is right, or fair ? To what extent is it helpful to conceptualize life with God as a journey through a wilderness, of whatever sort? Finally, short of whatever promised land we may be, what is the context and role of blessing?

Lexham Geographic Commentary on the Gospels
Many familiar Gospel narratives are filled with geographic details that we gloss over because of our distance from the Holy Land. Yet climate, landscape, natural resources, and other features of geography leave a lasting mark on the societies and cultures that have developed within them. In a world of dirt roads and dry riverbeds, where shepherds watch their flocks in the hills and fishermen mend their nets by the sea, Jesus taught from hill and plain, using the surrounding landscape as the backdrop for his teaching. Jesus' parables and illustrations are often brimming with geographic clues, but the significance of these distinctive details is often lost on us today. The Lexham Geographic Commentary on the Gospels puts readers in the sandals of the disciples as they travel throughout Israel with Jesus, explaining the significance of geography for mining the riches of the biblical text.

New in the Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentary Collection. First published in 1985, this book offers an accessible, nontechnical abridgement of C. E. B. Cranfield's magisterial two-volume International Critical Commentary on Romans-which N. T. Wright once called the finest work on Romans to appear this century and F. F. Bruce hailed as well worthy to take its place alongside the really great commentaries on Romans. Following a brief introduction, Cranfield provides section-by section and verse-by-verse commentary on Romans, based on his own translation.
