Re-Thinking Eating Disorders: Language, Emotion, and the Brain
In Re-Thinking Eating Disorders: Language, Emotion, and the Brain, Barbara Pearlman integrates ideas from psychoanalysis, developmental psychology and cutting-edge neuroscience to produce a model of neural emotional processing which may underpin the development of an eating disorder. Based on clinical observations over 30 years, this book explores how state change from symbolic to concrete thinking may be a key event that precedes an eating disorder episode. The book introduces this theory, and offers clinicians working with these challenging clients an entirely new model for treatment: internal language enhancement therapy (ILET). This easily teachable therapy is explored throughout the book with case studies and detailed descriptions of therapeutic techniques. Re-Thinking Eating Disorders will appeal to students and practitioners working with this clinical group who are seeking an up-to-date and integrative approach to therapy.

Group Therapy for Psychoses
Group therapy for patients with psychotic experiences is one of the least known of the group therapies; it is also one of the most diverse. This collection presents a range of methods, models and settings for group therapy for psychoses, as well as exploring the context for this type of treatment. Group Therapy for Psychoses offers an international perspective on the current range of practice in the field, in multiple care situations, contexts and institutions; from acute units to therapeutic communities, rehabilitation groups, self-help, and groups of those who hear voices. Presented in two parts, the first covers the history, evaluation and research methodologies of group therapy, while the second explores specific examples of groups and settings. The book tackles misconceptions about the treatment of psychoses and emphasises the healing effects of group therapy. It underscores the importance of training for selecting and conducting groups of patients suffering from psychoses and suggests possible formats, approaches and perspectives. The book's wide, reflexive and practical collection of chapters together demonstrate how group therapies can effectively help patients with psychotic experiences to overcome their difficulties on their way to recovery. The book will be of great use to clinicians working with people suffering from psychosis, including psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, psychologists, physicians and social workers. It will also appeal to group analysts, family therapists and CBT practitioners, as well as to all researchers in these fields.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy with Clients Managing Trauma
The topic of trauma has been covered in many books, and there are many publications covering the use of SFBT in different settings and with varied client populations. However, the convergence of these topics has, to date, been covered only minutely. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy with Clients Managing Trauma is a comprehensive overview of how Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) can be used as a treatment approach for working with clients managing various forms of trauma. It includes an overview of SFBT's basic tenets, a description of the current research supporting SFBT as an evidence-based practice, and a comparison of how SFBT clinicians may approach trauma cases differently than clinicians from other therapeutic approaches. The bulk of the text uniquely includes chapters contributed by skilled SFBT clinicians, with differing clinical expertise, sharing their knowledge and describing their strength-based, resiliency focus of applying SFBT in different traumatic circumstances. Practitioners and even Master's/doctoral students will find this text invaluable in learning how to best help traumatized clients develop a positive future and move toward healing and health.

'Full of charm and fascination' The Bookseller 'Would dazzle any storyteller in love with words and their deepest meanings' Amy Tan, author of Joy Luck Club 'A generous book and a beguiling read' Rebecca Gowers * * * * * * From the bestselling author of Born on a Blue Day and Thinking in Numbers, a delightful and eclectic exploration of language, and what it can teach us about ourselves and our lives. Why is the name 'Cleopatra' not allowed in Iceland? Why do clocks 'talk' to the Nahua people of Mexico? And if we are what we eat, are we also what we say? These are just some of the questions Daniel Tammet answers in Every Word is a Bird We Teach to Sing, a mesmerising new collection of essays investigating the intricacies and profound power of human language. Tammet goes back in time to explore the numeric language of his autistic childhood; he looks at the music and patterns that words make, and how languages evolve and are translated. He meets one of the world's most accomplished lip readers in Canada, learns how endangered languages like Manx are being revived and corresponds with native speakers of Esperanto in their mother tongue. He studies the grammar of the telephone, contemplates the significance of disappearing dialects, and also asks: will chatbots ever manage to convince us that they are human? From the art of translation to the lyricism of sign language, Every Word is a Bird We Teach to Sing is a fascinating journey through the world of words, letters, stories and meanings, and an extraordinary testament to the stunning range of Tammet's literary and polyglot talents.

Let Go of Emotional Overeating and Love Your Food: A Five-Point Plan for Success
Let Go of Emotional Overeating and Love Your Food is for anyone who would like to eat whatever they like, yet stop just at the point of satisfaction without overeating. Written by a Columbia University trained psychotherapist and former emotional overeater, Let Go of Emotional Overeating and Love Your Food offers psychologically sound techniques for recognizing the symptoms of emotional overeating and methods for addressing it in ways that are both effective and enjoyable. Readers will learn how to become aware of the difference between eating in a healthy way and eating emotionally - neither to satisfy hunger, nor for enjoyment, but in a desperate attempt to distract oneself from painful thoughts and feelings. Diets don't work for people who eat through their emotions. Instead, learning to recognize the stressors that lead to emotional eating and to address those tensions through other methods besides eating is the goal. When we handle stress well away from the table, we're free to relax and really savor our food when we choose to eat. Proven techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are presented in an innovative, easy-to-remember way. Learning to eat mindfully, for health and enjoyment, becomes the goal, and Arlene Englander walks readers through table techniques designed to make mindful eating easier, habitual, and ultimately second-nature. Allowing for both fun foods and healthy foods, Englander's approach emphasizes eating healthfully and being aware of best practices and the behavioral objectives of coping with stress, exercising regularly, mindful eating, good nutrition and hydration, and controlling overeating situations. She addresses late-night eating, parties, vacation, and other situations where overindulging may be a risk. She concludes with a prescription that is meant to last so that readers can love their food for a lifetime.

Foreign Bodies: Eating Disorders, Childhood Sexual Abuse, and Trauma-Informed Treatment
Foreign Bodies: Eating Disorders, Childhood Sexual Abuse, and Trauma-Informed Treatment addresses the association between eating disorders and childhood sexual abuse, proposing a new way of treating those suffering from eating disorders who were sexually abused as children. Based on testimonies of survivors of abuse who subsequently developed eating disorders, it offers a new form of diagnosis and treatment, arguing that the eating-disorder field often ignores the traumatic sources of eating disorders, leading to some treatment programs not being commensurate, and at times conflicting, with the principles of childhood sexual abuse treatment. The case studies used to highlight the link between childhood sexual abuse and eating disorders are presented from the perspective of the women involved, in their own words. Their voices are supplemented by Gur's own stance as a clinician specializing in the treatment of sexual abuse and CPTSD. The book is divided into three parts: the first deals with eating disorders, childhood sexual abuse, and the association between them; the second examines the treatment of eating disorders and childhood sexual abuse; and the third offers a new form of diagnosis and treatment for eating disorders. This book will be of great interest to researchers and postgraduate students in the eating disorder field of psychotherapy, psychology, or psychiatry, plus those studying the treatment of trauma. It will also be of interest to clinical dieticians, psychologists, social workers, doctors, nurses, eating disorder specialists, and policymakers in the mental health field, as well as eating disorders sufferers and those who care for them.

The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy
The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy explores the contemporary relevance of this treatment for modern psychotherapy, from the point of view of a leading contributor. First founded in 1955 by Albert Ellis, REBT still has much to offer the field. Despite this, the therapy has been increasingly neglected by cognitive behaviour therapy and other practitioners. To demonstrate its contributed relevance, Professor Windy Dryden outlines in this book his current thinking and practice in regard to REBT. He advocates its key features of flexibility and non-extremeness, and explores what he believes REBT has to contribute to the discussion surrounding contemporary issues in psychotherapy. The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy is an excellent resource for CBT and other therapists who would like to know more about the relevance of REBT to their work.

The connection and science behind race, racism, and mental illness In 2012, an interdisciplinary team of scientists at the University of Oxford reported that - based on their clinical experiment - the beta-blocker drug, Propranolol, could reduce implicit racial bias among its users. Shortly after the experiment, an article in Time Magazine cited the study, posing the question: Is racism becoming a mental illness? In Are Racists Crazy? Sander Gilman and James Thomas trace the idea of race and racism as psychopathological categories., from mid-19th century Europe, to contemporary America, up to the aforementioned clinical experiment at the University of Oxford, and ask a slightly different question than that posed by Time: How did racism become a mental illness? Using historical, archival, and content analysis, the authors provide a rich account of how the 19th century `Sciences of Man' - including anthropology, medicine, and biology - used race as a means of defining psychopathology and how assertions about race and madness became embedded within disciplines that deal with mental health and illness. An illuminating and riveting history of the discourse on racism, antisemitism, and psychopathology, Are Racists Crazy? connects past and present claims about race and racism, showing the dangerous implications of this specious line of thought for today.

Asperger's Syndrome and Jail: A Survival Guide
Will Attwood was finishing a three-year sentence in prison when he was formally diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome for the first time. After his diagnosis he recognised just how much it had been affecting his life behind bars. This book is a practical advice guide for people with autism who have been sentenced to time in prison. Will shares his first-hand knowledge of what to expect and how to behave within the penal system. He sheds light on topics that are important for people with autism, answering questions such as: How should you act with inmates and guards? How do you avoid trouble? What about a prison's environmental stimuli may cause you anxiety? His thoughtful, measured writing debunks rumours about daily life in prison, and the useful tips and observations he offers will help anyone with autism prepare for the realities of spending time incarcerated, and be enormously helpful to those working with offenders on the autism spectrum.

Successful Social Articles into Adulthood: Growing Up with Social Stories (TM)
The first book that explains how to use Social Stories (TM) to support younger adults with autism focuses on some of the most common issues that arise as they enter the adult world. Siobhan Timmins explores the thinking that can lead to particularly problematic situations, and shows how to construct effective stories that can enlarge understanding and reshape thinking to help young adults with autism approach the work in a confident and constructive way. The stories engage with the various stages of applying for a job, adjusting to a work environment, maintaining physical and mental health, and staying safe. Today, 1 in 60 children are on the autism spectrum. There is a 24 to 36 month wait under the NHS for diagnosis and many families are desperate for help, advice and reassurance. Dr May Ng's book is full of useful tips and is a must-read for parents of a child with autism. Through her knowledge both as an award-winning paediatrician and as the mother of a 13-year-old son with autism, May provides a first-hand account of bringing up a child with autism, bringing together a wide range of resources and practical advice to help families cope. Over the years, May researched, tried and documented almost every therapy available for autism - public and private, mainstream and alternative. She worked with persistence and patience to teach Brendan to manage basic life skills for himself. Today, Brendan is a happy 13-year-old in an autism school and is able to do many things they once believed might not be possible. This is a highly practical account of the difficulties faced with raising a child with autism and offers comfort to other parents in the same position, as well as the hope that their child can live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.

Embodiment and Eating Disorders: Theory, Research, Prevention and Treatment
This is an insightful and essential new volume for academics and professionals interested in the lived experience of those who struggle with disordered eating. Embodiment and Eating Disorders situates the complicated - and increasingly prevalent - topic of disordered eating at the crossroads of many academic disciplines, articulating a notion of embodied selfhood that rejects the separation of mind and body and calls for a feminist, existential, and sociopolitically aware approach to eating disorder treatment. Experts from a variety of backgrounds and specializations examine theories of embodiment, current empirical research, and practical examples and strategies for prevention and treatment.

Women Who Were Sexually Abused as Children: Mothering, Resilience, and Protecting the Next Generation
Stories of mothers who survived sexual abuse as children reveal the struggles, challenges, and triumphs of this special group of women. Unraveling the veil of silence and capturing the experiences of mothers who were sexually abused as children, this book offers a first step in both supporting mothers and disrupting the cycle of intergenerational abuse that keeps these mothers isolated and alone in their mothering challenges and successes. Each story reveals the concerns, the needs, the difficulties, and the fears these mothers confront as they parent their children while struggling with their own past experiences. By examining the therapeutic needs and concerns of mothers who have survived child sexual abuse, Teresa Gil offers special insight into understanding and supporting these remarkable women. At issue is understanding what helps women who were sexually abused as children to survive and to parent effectively. Written for adult mothers who were victims of childhood sexual abuse, as well as for helping professionals, this book reveals the touching details of the pain and triumphs of mothering as a survivor and examines the protective factors that support resiliency and assist survivor/mothers to overcome challenges and to provide safe environments for the next generation.

A Sunday Times Book of the Year 'Riveting, clear-sighted and exceptionally articulate... Her literary and psychoanalytic fluency gives the book an impact that feels arrestingly honest... Heartbreaking' Daily Telegraph 'An unsparing account of a family destroyed by drugs. Unique and haunting' Sunday Times 'What gives this book its astonishing power is not the guilt, but the intelligence and literary skill' Guardian 'I write, knowing that writing at all may be seen as a betrayal of family; a shaming, exploitative act. Anyone reading this who thinks so, please know that I thought it before you' For years Sigrid Rausing watched helplessly as her brother Hans and his wife Eva succumbed to drug addiction. It afflicted a terrible toll on their family, culminating in Eva's tragic early death. As this death led to inquest and media circus, the world looked on in horror, but few understood the suffering endured by the Rausing family. In Mayhem, Sigrid explores the collateral damage addiction wreaks on loved ones. Telling her family's story, she examines painful and rarely discussed questions. What is it like to live with addiction in the family? How can you help without hurting the one you love? And what does it mean to survive another's addiction?

Screening, Assessment, and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders: Evidence-based practices, community and organizational setting in the era of integrated care
There is a clear and pressing need for health professionals, including social workers, to be trained in evidence-based practices (EBPs) in the area of substance use disorders (SUD). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and other national organizations and government agencies have all put out reports calling for this vital need, though there remains a significant shortage of properly trained clinicians. The aim of this book is to provide an integrated perspective on addiction treatment on the evidence-base of psychosocial and medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorder. The volume is unique in that it critically examines the evidence base of both psychosocial and pharmacological treatment practices targeting a profession of social work audience. It is also one of few that (1) incorporates evidence both from the United States and internationally, and (2) presents a methodology that permits the authors to systematically review a large number of empirically based studies in an organized and easy-to-read manner. Additionally, the text incorporates a health disparities perspective and describes implementation barriers at the organizational, community, and policy levels. It can be used in policy, human behavior, and clinical practice both nationally and internationally.
