Meaning in Life: An Evidence-Based Handbook for Practitioners
This inspiring, insightful new text provides a practical guide to helping clients live a meaningful and satisfying life despite the challenges they may be facing. Divided into three parts, it starts by drawing on empirical research to demonstrate the effectiveness of meaning-oriented practice and reviews a large body of literature on meaning in a wide-range of psychological and philosophical approaches, translating this into specific recommendations for practitioners. It continues by exploring the basic skill set required for working effectively in this area - from how to assess clients' needs and address issues of meaning, to specific existential, phenomenological and mindfulness skills. Finally, it provides a step guide to applying the skills to clinical practice with the support of examples and case studies from a range of professions. In what is still an emerging area of practice, this text stands alone as a comprehensive source of reference for both students and practitioners across the full range of people professions.

Challenging Sociality: An Anthropology of Robots, Autism, and Attachment
This book explores the development of humanoid robots for helping children with autism develop social skills based on fieldwork in the UK and the USA. Robotic scientists propose that robots can therapeutically help children with autism because there is a special affinity between them and mechanical things. This idea is supported by autism experts that claim those with autism have a preference for things over other persons. Autism is also seen as a gendered condition, with men considered less social and therefore more likely to have the condition. The author explores how these experiments in cultivating social skills in children with autism using robots, while focused on a unique subsection, is the model for a new kind of human-thing relationship for wider society across the capitalist world where machines can take on the role of the you in the relational encounter. Moreover, underscoring this is a form of consciousness that arises out of specific forms of attachment styles.

Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy for Anger, Anxiety, and Depression: Healing Broken Hearts, Not Broken Minds
This book shows clinicians how to use Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy (IRT) to change maladaptive patterns regarding safety and threat. According to IRT theory, patients who suffer from maladaptive anger, anxiety, or depression are reenacting dysfunctional lessons in affect management modeled by parents and other early attachment figures. For example, a depressed woman who is afraid to assert herself can be described as reliving a childhood during which speaking up was dangerous, leading to rejection, even abandonment. IRT gives sufferers the tools to revise or replace internalized versions of attachment figures (the family in the head ) to create a more secure internal base. IRT is integrative, drawing on any intervention relevant to the case formulation, and it is compatible with medications as needed for stress management. Evidence of effectiveness is provided for a treatment-resistant population. In this warm and engaging book, author Lorna Smith Benjamin shows how patients can more effectively cope with threat and find safety in their everyday lives.

This book features approximately 300 short-answer questions on geriatric psychiatry topics, each comprising the stem of a brief clinical scenario or concise question with expected number of answers. The book also features detailed teaching notes, graphics, and the respective source references. The format is consistently structured from chapter to chapter, practical and concise, and designed to enhance the reader's diagnostic and management ability and clinical understanding. Each answer includes a concise discussion, pertinent illustrations, and source references. This text is a valuable reference and teaching tool that provides an opportunity for learning across a rapidly growing field. The material covered matches the existing postgraduate curricula in geriatric psychiatry and helps prepare candidates for their specialty and subspecialty certification examinations. The cases map well to both the American Geriatric Psychiatry Association and Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry as well as other international postgraduate curricula. The book covers main topics within geriatric psychiatry, some such as substance use disorders and sexuality and sexual dysfunction in later life. As the Baby Boomers age, this reference will continue to be a valuable staple in geriatric workforce training. Geriatric Psychiatry Study Guide is the ultimate resource for students, residents, fellows, psychiatrists, psychologists, family practitioners, nurses, social workers, and all clinicians rising to the challenges of the mental health segment of the geriatric workforce.

The Foundations of Phenomenological Psychotherapy
This book addresses selected central questions in phenomenological psychology, a discipline that investigates the experience of self that emerges over the course of an individual's life, while also outlining a new method, the formal indication, as a means of accessing personal experience while remaining faithful to its uniqueness. In phenomenological psychology, the psyche no longer refers to an isolated self that remains unchanged by life's changing situations, but is rather a phenomenon (ipseity) which manifests itself and constantly takes form over the course of a person's unique existence. Thus, the formal indication allows us to study the way in which ipseity relates to the world in different situations, in a way that holds different meanings for different people. Based on this new approach, phenomenological psychotherapy marks a transition from a mode of grasping the truth about oneself through reflection, to a mode of accessing the disclosure of self through a work of self-transformation (the care of self) that requires the person to actually change her position on herself. By putting forward this method, the authors shed new light on the dynamic interplay between a person's historicity and uniqueness on the one hand, and the related physiopathological mechanisms on the other, providing evidence from the fields of genetics, cardiology, the neurosciences and psychiatry. The book will appeal to a broad readership, from psychiatrists, psychologist and psychotherapists, to researchers in these fields.

The New Psychology of Health: Unlocking the Social Cure
Why do people who are more socially connected live longer and have better health than those who are socially isolated? Why are social ties at least as good for your health as not smoking, having a good diet, and taking regular exercise? Why is treatment more effective when there is an alliance between therapist and client? Until now, researchers and practitioners have lacked a strong theoretical foundation for answering such questions. This ground-breaking book fills this gap by showing how social identity processes are key to understanding and effectively managing a broad range of health-related problems. Integrating a wealth of evidence that the authors and colleagues around the world have built up over the last decade, The New Psychology of Health provides a powerful framework for reconceptualising the psychological dimensions of a range of conditions - including stress, trauma, ageing, depression, addiction, eating behaviour, brain injury, and pain. Alongside reviews of current approaches to these various issues, each chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the ways in which theory and practice can be enriched by attention to social identity processes. Here the authors show not only how an array of social and structural factors shape health outcomes through their impact on group life, but also how this analysis can be harnessed to promote the delivery of `social cures' in a range of fields. This is a must-have volume for service providers, practitioners, students, and researchers working in a wide range of disciplines and fields, and will also be essential reading for anyone whose goal it is to improve the health and well-being of people and communities in their care.

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Theory and Practice for Treating Disorders of Overcontrol
Based on over twenty years of research, radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO-DBT) is a breakthrough, transdiagnostic approach for helping people suffering from extremely difficult-to-treat emotional overcontrol (OC) disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and treatment-resistant depression. Written by the founder of RO-DBT, Thomas Lynch, this comprehensive volume outlines the core theories of RO-DBT, and provides a framework for implementing RO-DBT in individual therapy. While traditional dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) has shown tremendous success in treating people emotion dysregulation, there have been few resources available for treating those with overcontrol disorders. OC has been linked to social isolation, aloof and distant relationships, cognitive rigidity, risk aversion, a strong need for structure, inhibited emotional expression, and hyper-perfectionism. And yet-perhaps due to the high value our society places on the capacity to delay gratification and inhibit public displays of destructive emotions and impulses-problems linked with OC have received little attention or been misunderstood. Indeed, people with OC are often considered highly successful by others, even as they suffer silently and alone. RO-DBT is based on the premise that psychological well-being involves the confluence of three factors: receptivity, flexibility, and social-connectedness. RO-DBT addresses each of these important factors, and is the first treatment in the world to prioritize social-signaling as the primary mechanism of change based on a transdiagnostic, neuroregulatory model linking the communicative function of human emotions to the establishment of social connectedness and well-being. As such, RO-DBT is an invaluable resource for treating an array of disorders that center around overcontrol and a lack of social connectedness-such as anorexia nervosa, chronic depression, postpartum depression, treatment resistant anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorders, as well as personality disorders such as avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, and paranoid personality disorder. Written for mental health professionals, professors, or simply those interested in behavioral health, this seminal book- along with its companion, Radically-Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training Manual (available separately)-provides everything you need to understand and implement this exciting new treatment in individual therapy -including theory, history, research, ongoing studies, clinical examples, and future directions.

The Skills Training Manual for Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Clinician's Guide for Treating Disorders of Overcontrol
Radically open-dialectical behavior therapy (RO-DBT) is a groundbreaking, transdiagnostic treatment model for clients with difficult-to-treat overcontrol (OC) disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, chronic depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Written by the founder of RO-DBT, Thomas Lynch, this is the first and only session-by-session training manual to help you implement this evidence-based therapy in your practice. As a clinician, you're familiar with dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and its success in treating clients with emotion dysregulation disorders. But what about clients with overcontrol disorders? RO-DBT addresses each of these important factors, and is the first treatment in the world to prioritize social-signaling as the primary mechanism of change based on a transdiagnostic, neuroregulatory model linking the communicative function of human emotions to the establishment of social connectedness and well being. In this training manual, you'll find an outline of RO-DBT, including history, research, and how it differs from traditional DBT. You'll also find a session-by-session RO-DBT outpatient treatment protocol, with sections that outline the weekly, one-hour individual therapy sessions and weekly two-and-a-half hour skills training classes that occur over a period of approximately thirty weeks. This includes instructor guidelines and user-friendly worksheets. The feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of RO-DBT is evidence-based and informed by over twenty years of translational treatment development research. This important manual-along with its companion book, Radically-Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (available separately), distills the essential components of RO-DBT into a workable program you can start using right away to improve treatment outcomes for clients suffering with OC.
