Climate protection and development
This book spells out, in more detail than usual, what can and should be done to avert the real risks of disaster. It summons us to an endeavour worthy of the resources and ingenuity of the twenty-first century - towards bold initiatives with big costs, and much bigger benefits. It explores the interconnected issues of climate and development, laying the groundwork for such a new deal. It presents a challenging agenda, and highlights the needs and perspectives of developing countries which may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable to readers in high-income countries. The unfortunate truth is that any large country, or group of mid-sized countries, can veto any global climate solution by refusing to participate, so a solution will only work if it works for everyone.

Chemins Pour la Paix: Approches Inclusives Pour la Prevention des Conflits Violents
Since 2010, the number and intensity of violent conflicts have increased rapidly. The human and economic costs associated with violent conflict are massive, affecting long-term stability and prospects for economic development and poverty reduction. Today's violent conflicts are protracted and recurring, often part of complex regional conflict systems. They affect countries at all income levels and are marked by increasing international interference. This creates a new urgency for improving national and international approaches to prevention. Conflict takes place in all societies and is an inherent part of human interaction. Societies are able to manage most conflicts peacefully. But prevention requires approaches and efforts not limited to managing the crisis, but also fostering an economic, social, and political environment that addresses the dynamics and root causes of violent conflict. This joint study by the United Nations and the World Bank uses innovative analyses and systematic review of what has and has not worked, and aims to improve our understanding of how domestic development processes interact with international security, diplomatic, humanitarian, justice, and human rights efforts to prevent conflict from becoming violent. The report identifies critical areas that countries can address to become more peaceful.

System of National Accounts: 2008
The System of National Accounts, 2008 (2008 SNA) is an updated version of the The System of National Accounts, 1993 (1993 SNA). It is the fifth version of the SNA, the first of which was published over fifty years ago. At its thirty-third session in 2003, the Statistical Commission requested that the 1993 SNA be updated to bring the national accounting framework into line with the needs of data users. The 2008 SNA starts with an introduction and an overview and then presents the accounting rules, the accounts and tables, and their integration. These subjects are the topics of chapters 1 to 17, previously known as volume 1. Chapters 18 to 29 elaborate various aspects of the accounts, provide details about their presentation and describe some possible extensions to improve the usefulness of the accounts for a wide range of purposes.

Green Hills, Blue Cities: An Ecosystems Approach to Water Resources
Africa is currently the least urbanised region in the world, but this is changing fast. Of the billion people living on the African continent, about 40 per cent lives in urban areas. The urban population in Africa doubled from 205 million in 1990 to 400 million in 2010, and by 2050, it is expected that this would have tripled to 1.23 billion. Of this urban population, 60 per cent is living in slum conditions. In a time of such urban growth, Africa is likely to experience some of the most severe impacts of climate change, particularly when it comes to water and food security. This places huge pressures on the growing urban populations. This report shows that there is a way forward for a more sustainable future where restoration of ecosystems, often in the green hills and watersheds surrounding cities, can provide cheaper, efficient and resilient water supply systems in a changing world.

Preliminary Overview of the Economies of Latin America and the Caribbean: 2010
Although Latin America and Caribbean economies are set to grow, sub-regional performance has been varied. In 2010, most economies continued to move forward on the path to recovery. This growth had positive effects on employment and private consumption. However, diverse factors came together in 2010 to create a less optimistic situation for the international economy, which, combined with diminished public spending efforts, suggest a decreased dynamism in the region. In effect, the external environment continues to affect the region's economies. At the same time, the relative strength of emerging economies has led to an increase in the inflow of capital to the region. This situation brought currency appreciation. The challenge is to boost investments through increased national savings in order to better defend the exchange rate parities and contribute to the creation of a standard to support development in the region.
