Before They Were famous
We see famous faces every day: campaign shoots, promotional pictures, and paparazzi photos plaster the pages of print and digital media. But how did these well-known personalities present in front of the camera before they made it big, becoming the highly-recognized celebrities of today? In Before They Were Famous, David Drebin has rummaged through his archive to curate some of his best pictures of today's most familiar faces. Whether Charlize Theron before her Oscar win, John Legend before he stormed the charts, or Steve Jobs just before the introduction of the legendary first iPod, David Drebin photographed them all on their path to fame. With this captivating line up, the New York City-based multidisciplinary artist not only offers an intimate and original look at now world-famous celebrities, but also shares his own career beginnings presenting images before they were sold out or close to be sold out. These limited edition photographs were all created before Drebin, too, became famous, providing a unique and rare document of his own creative journey. Alongside the portraits, the book also shows original works, from femmes fatales to landscapes, which would come to define his practice and are today sold as limited edition photographs in the finest galleries worldwide.

Contributions by Megan Abbott, Michael Almereyda, Kris Belden-Adams, Maude Schuyler Clay, William Dunlap, W. Ralph Eubanks, William Ferris, Marti A. Funke, Lisa Howorth, Amanda Malloy, Richard McCabe, Emily Ballew Neff, Robert Saarnio, and Anne Wilkes Tucker The Beautiful Mysterious: The Extraordinary Gaze of William Eggleston is an examination of the life and work of the artist widely considered to be the father of color photography. William Eggleston was born in 1939 and grew up in the Mississippi Delta town of Sumner. His innovative 1976 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York helped establish color photography as an artistic medium and has inspired photographers and artists around the world. Edited by Ann J. Abadie, the catalog contains fifty-five Eggleston photographs, thirty-six that were featured in The Beautiful Mysterious exhibition at the University of Mississippi Museum from September 2016 to February 2017. Eggleston's longtime friend William Ferris, a celebrated folklorist, donated all the photographs to the Museum. The photographs range from 1962 into the 1980s, representing each of Eggleston's projects during that time. Some of the photographs are inscribed with Eggleston's rare handwritten notes about location, people, dates, and projects. Eight of Eggleston's early dye transfers are in the collection. Many of these works had not been on public display before this exhibition, including black-and-white images that are unique-copy single prints. This is a penetrating examination of the influence of the Mississippi Delta and the American South on Eggleston's work and of Eggleston's influence on photography and other creative fields.

Cindy Sherman
This book, which accompanies a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, considers Cindy Sherman's oeuvre through the lens of portraiture. Featuring key examples of her work - from her earliest photographs through to her most recent - it explores the mercurial relationship between appearance and reality Cindy Sherman is among the most influential artists of her generation. Using herself as model, wearing a range of costumes and portraying herself in invented situations, she interrogates the imagery employed by the mass media, po pular culture and fine art. Television, advertising, magazines, fashion and Old Master paintings all form part of her visual language. Whether using make-up, costumes, props and prosthetics to manipulate her own appearance, or devising elaborate tableaux, her entire body of 40 years' work constitutes a highly distinctive response to contemporary and earlier culture, whose stylistic tropes she appropriates and quotes. This book will explore the rich cultural sources that Sherman plunders in creating provocative and ambiguous images that lead us to question the things we see. Sherman's work is surveyed through two related themes. Examining Sherman's art within the context of portraiture it explores the way that identity is constructed from appearance. It also considers the nature of Sherman's involvement with a range of styles by positioning her work in the context of the pre-existing imagery that she appropriates.

Sohei Nishino: Water Line: A Story of the Po River
The Po river flows for over 600 km through four different regions of Northern Italy, from its source in the mountains of Piedmont to its wide delta in the Adriatic Sea. About 16 million people live along the banks of the longest river in Italy, and more than a third of Italian industries and agricultural production are concentrated here. In 2017 the Japanese photographer Sohei Nishino traveled along the river, taking hundreds of photographs, which he then printed, combined in collage and arranged on large tableaux. The works created by Nishino are a habitat to different perspectives and languages in which map and diorama blend harmoniously to give life to a new vision of reality. Swarming with life, this image of the river is composed of a multitude of faces, industrial landscapes, glimpses of the river, city views and scenes of everyday life, thus combining details and broad views, and creating an image-filled polyptych. At the center of all is the river, understood as a fundamental condition for existence and a symbol of its continuous flow. Water Line: A Story of the Po River , the photographer's second monograph, brings together over a hundred black and white images never published before.

The Grand Canyon and the Southwest
Celebrate the majesty of America's natural wilderness with this special paperback edition honoring the 100th anniversary of Grand Canyon National Park--the perfect gift for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike. In The Grand Canyon and the Southwest, Adams' most iconic images of the Grand Canyon are reproduced alongside little-before-seen photographs showcasing the delicate and stark beauty of the Southwestern landscape surrounding it, from Texas to California. Next to Yosemite and the High Sierra, the Southwest was closest to Ansel Adams' heart. It was there, in the early 1930s, that he decided to make photography his life's work. These archival-quality images are complemented by a selection of Adams' vivid writings about the region and its influence on his art. It is all very beautiful and magical here, he wrote, a quality which cannot be described. You have to live it and breathe it, let the sun bake it into you.

Light Scripture: Analog Reflections in Photography
Light Scripture collects three photo essays by Swiss photographer Andreas Greber. Created over the course of two decades, Greber's photographs show simple scenes, such as fragments of a wall, translucent portraits, and wooded landscapes. Yet they are enigmatic and unsettling in that, while visible, their subjects escape the determination of shadow and light. For Greber, this is the essence of photography: inscribing with light. Presented in a dual English-German edition, Light Scripture brings together thirty-three of Greber's photographs in a beautiful, large-format book. It takes readers through the artist's process in the creation of the series, which explores the aesthetics and properties of photography with a special focus on how recent shifts in photography during the digital age call for a re-evaluation of its classic analogue variety. Greber's photographs are complemented by an essay by art critic Konrad Tobler. Text in English and German.

Throughout his career, Thomas Joshua Cooper has focused on the landscape through the lens of historical and cultural geography and cartography. Working exclusively outdoors with an 1898 AGFA field camera, Cooper has established a unique aesthetic and philosophy. This collection features twenty images that Cooper made on the East End of Long Island and Shelter Island in 2016, juxtaposed with earlier works depicting sites along the Hudson River, Cape Cod, and Maine. Each photograph is accompanied by texts that provide eloquent historical and geographic context. In 1975, Tom Bianchi moved to New York City and took a job as in-house counsel at Columbia Pictures. That first year Tom was given a Polaroid SX - 70 camera by Columbia Pictures at a corporate conference. He took that camera to the Pines on summer weekends, those pictures became the book Fire Island Pines, Polaroids 1975 - 1983 published in 2013. Now, some 44 years later, we finally get a first look at another extraordinary collection of Polaroids by Tom taken in his NYC apartment at 63 East 9th Street. Whereas Fire Island is an expansive communal experience happening on a sunny sand bar outside of the city under huge open skies, Tom's New York apartment was an intimate track-lit den, a safe stage where he and his friends invited each other to play out their erotic night games. Tom's New York City Polaroids take us behind the closed door of his apartment, Back then we were in the early days of a revolution that seemed inevitably headed to a more loving, playful and tolerant way of being. We were innocents , Bianchi recalls. This is an essential companion book to Fire Island Pines and an important document of urban gay life.

The Lost Words: Spell Songs
The Lost Words: Spell Songs is a 112 page book with 14 track CD of new works. In 2018 Folk by the Oak Festival commissioned Spell Songs, a musical companion piece to The Lost Words by author Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris; a celebrated `spell book' rich with poetic rhythms and imagined birdsong that naturally invited a musical response. Spell Songs gathered together eight remarkable musicians whose music engages deeply with landscape and nature, to respond to the creatures, art and language of The Lost Words. Spell Songs allowed these acclaimed and diverse musicians to weave together elements of British folk music, Senegalese folk traditions, and experimental and classical music to create an inspiring new body of work. In February 2019 Spell Songs enjoyed standing ovations at sell-out performances at major venues around the including QEH at the Southbank Centre; shows in 2019 include Hay Festival, and a prom at the Royal Albert Hall. Here are 14 songs which capture the essence of The Lost Words. Spoken voice, whispers, accents, dialects, native languages, proverbs, sayings, birdsong, river chatter and insect hum all increase the intimacy of the musical world conjured by the songs. Inspired by the words and art of the original book, each musician brings new imaginings, embellishments and diversions which are rooted in personal experience, a deep respect for the natural world, protest at the loss of nature and language or appreciation for wildness and beauty. Art inspired music and music inspired art. Jackie Morris immersed herself in the musical residency where she generously created new iconesque artwork of each musician and their instruments portrayed in an unexpected and enchanting way. These new paintings, along with stunning photography by renowned photographer Elly Lucas, from the residential gathering, the recording of the album and the sell-out tour, fill this book with beauty. Writings by Robert, Jackie and Karine elaborate on the project itself and its eco-musicological message, further exploring the relationship between art and nature, music and conservation. There are songs here that would live with me for the rest of my years, even if I'd had no part in their making. , Robert Macfarlane

Rohina Hoffman: Hair Stories
Hair Stories is a series of excerpted interviews and portraits of a diverse array of women which explores the complex relationship women have with their hair. Photographer Rohina Hoffman used her interviewing skills, which she developed in her training as a neurologist, to establish an intimate rapport that allowed for a truthful telling about the impact of hair in these womens' lives. Though it was conceived and shot before the #MeToo movement, this salient project presents hair as a metaphor for identity, femininity, and the manner in which women struggle for control over their own bodies in a misogynistic world. Hair Stories reflects that hair is more than just style or aesthetics; it is a physical manifestation of the history of women.

The photographs in this edition are new digital scans of Welty's original negatives and authentic prints, restoring the images to their original glory. Duffy
As famous as the stars he photographed, Brian Duffy defined the image of Swinging London in the 1960s. Together with David Bailey and Terence Donovan, Duffy is recognised as one of the innovators of 'documentary' fashion photography, a style which revolutionised the industry. Their attitude and aesthetic iconified the scene, birthing the cult of the fashion photographer and inspiring the famous film Blow-Up (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966). As Duffy put it, Before 1960, a fashion photographer was tall, thin and camp. But we three are different: short, fat and heterosexual! The press nicknamed the three photographers 'The Terrible Three', while Norman Parkinson added to their notoriety by naming them 'The Black Trinity'. Duffy's most famous photograph is the 'Mona Lisa of pop', the cover of Bowie's 'Aladdin Sane'. He collaborated with the artist over eight years and exerted a direct influence on the numerous reinventions of Bowie's image. It is fitting, therefore, that this new edition should expand on their work together with new images. This new edition of Duffy also features other, new images from the photographer's archive, depicting both star and photographer in their prime. Duffy's first commission came from Ernestine Carter, the then fashion editor of The Sunday Times. From there he was hired by British Vogue in 1957, where he remained working until 1963, photographing famous models such as Pauline Stone and Jean Shrimpton. In the 1960s Duffy worked for many of the major fashion magazines; his list of subjects was a roll call of the celebrities of that time, including Sidney Poitier, Michael Caine, Tom Courtney, Sammy Davis Jnr, Nina Simone, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Charlton Heston and William Burroughs. He was also critically acclaimed for his advertising campaigns with Benson & Hedges and Smirnoff. Notoriously, in 1979 Duffy decided to give up photography, burning many of his negatives in a symbolic fire in his back yard - although he would later take up the camera again at the behest of his son. Thankfully, many of these negatives have been discovered and salvaged since. Duffy died on 31 May 2010. Duffy and aggravation go together like gin and tonic. - David Bailey

Alfred Stieglitz: Taking Pictures, Making Painters
A fascinating biography of a revolutionary American artist ripe for rediscovery as a photographer and champion of other artists Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was an enormously influential artist and nurturer of artists even though his accomplishments are often overshadowed by his role as Georgia O'Keeffe's husband. This new book from celebrated biographer Phyllis Rose reconsiders Stieglitz as a revolutionary force in the history of American art. Born in New Jersey, Stieglitz at age eighteen went to study in Germany, where his father, a wool merchant and painter, insisted he would get a proper education. After returning to America, he became one of the first American photographers to achieve international fame. By the time he was sixty, he gave up photography and devoted himself to selling and promoting art. His first gallery, 291, was the first American gallery to show works by Picasso, Rodin, Matisse, and other great European modernists. His galleries were not dealerships so much as open universities, where he introduced European modern art to Americans and nurtured an appreciation of American art among American artists.

Stephen Wilkes. Day to Night
If you were to stand in one spot at an iconic location for 30 hours and simply observe, never closing your eyes, you still wouldn't be able to take in all the detail and emotion found in a Stephen Wilkes panoramic photograph. Not only does Wilkes shoot over 1,500 exposures from a fixed angle, he also distills this visual information afterward in his studio, painstakingly composing selected frames into a single image. A book that rewards repeated viewings, Day to Night presents 60 ultra-epic panoramas created between 2009 and 2018, shot everywhere from Africa's Serengeti to the Champs- lys es in Paris, from the Grand Canyon to Coney Island, from Trafalgar Square to Red Square. Each image is a labor of love as well as patience. Wilkes waited more than two years to gain permission to photograph Pope Francis celebrating Easter mass in the Vatican, ultimately producing a vivid tableau in which the pontiff appears 10 times. The book also highlights some of the extraordinary details that are an intrinsic part of the final image, works of art in their own right. Each image takes us on a seamless trip from dawn to dark across the world's most iconic locations, and we discover the unique ebb and flow of man-made and natural landmarks like never before.

Contains unseen 'candid' and behind-the-scenes images from the world's leading fetish photographer. Includes commentaries by the photographer about each image - recollections from shoots and back stories about the models create an intimate atmosphere. Designed, written and edited by an all-female team: Rosa Nussbaum, Andi Campognone and Sarah Handelman. Steve Diet Goedde's photographs are concerned with fetishism, but they could reasonably be regarded as fashion photographs, for they are about clothes and the roles that dressing imposes on women, or allows them to play. Indeed, Goedde has consistently rejected the visual stereotypes of 'fetish' photography. Instead he sets out to seduce and amuse, experimenting with humour, irony and elements of the surreal. Extempore brings together images that are departures in another sense. They represent stolen moments, or glimpses behind the scenes, when the models are not necessarily aware of the camera. Most of Goedde's models are drawn from his close circle of friends and in these photographs particularly one senses a shared trust and understanding.

Using herself as model, wearing a range of costumes and portraying herself in invented situations, she interrogates the imagery employed by the mass media, popular culture and fine art. Whether using make-up, costumes, props and prosthetics to manipulate her own appearance, or devising elaborate tableaux, her work constitutes a highly distinctive response to contemporary and earlier culture, whose stylistic tropes she appropriates and quotes. This book is a selection of Cindy Sherman's best loved works available as perforated postcards. Grouped by series, multiple postcards per page include both black and white photographs and full colour images. This searing urban portrait from visual artist Miguel Rio Branco draws upon his itinerant early years as the son of diplomats to reveal the common threads of struggle and loneliness in metropolises around the world. The images are impeccably captured, but the pictures are not always pretty. Rio Branco is not interested in documenting historic city landmarks, an impressive skyline, or the aspirational dreams that soar up towards it. Instead, he focuses his camera on the city's refuse and margins-on that which it has thrown away and on those it has cast aside and disappointed. In stark frames or soft impressions, it is street sleepers, beggars, prostitutes, stray dogs, smashed cars, and shattered glass that characterize his urban impressions. While subtle details reveal the specificity of place, it is the commonality of urban experience at the heart of Rio Branco's project. Light on local context or explanatory narrative, the images are instead meticulously arranged into one redolent sequence of a universal city. Working as if in the cutting studio, Rio Branco excels in the rhythm and succession of pictures, crafting evocative patterns of motif (decrepit buildings, lone figures, smashed-up cars); color (rich reds, dusty pinks, stark whites and blues); and form (an anguished street sleeper beside an ecstatic statue of a saint). Throughout, occasional pictures of women are proffered as sensual, hopeful reprieve, interspersing the grit and the grime in commanding portraits or up-close, supple nudes. At once incisive in its message and lyrical in its arrangement, Maldicidade focuses attention on the city's ineludible magnetism, as much as on its alienation and inhumanity. Biting, bare-faced, and achingly beautiful, it is a collection in which all city dwellers will find something of themselves, or something they long to escape.

Norman Parkinson: Always in Fashion
One of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century. A collection of Norman Parkinson's greatest works, in the fields of fashion, celebrity, royalty and portraiture. Featuring many iconic images of famous faces including Audrey Hepburn, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Jean Seberg, Jerry Hall and many more. A long overdue introduction into the work of a genius of photography. Norman Parkinson (1913-1990) is one of the greatest and most influential photographers of the twentieth century. Beginning in the 1930s his style of work helped define the look of each subsequent decade (including the New Look of Paris in the '50s and Swinging London of the '60s) and his impact on his followers was immense. Parkinson gained recognition in his early years revolutionising photography by moving female models from the static, serious and controlled environment of the photographic studio to real-life locations and exotic surroundings. This dynamic and spontaneous style garnered the attention of numerous fashion magazines including Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Town & Country, earning Parkinson international recognition. His photographs helped create the age of the supermodel and made Parkinson the photographer of choice for fashion designers, artists and writers, musicians and actors, and British royalty. In a career that spanned six decades, Parkinson dazzled the world and inspired his peers with sparkling inventiveness as a portrait and fashion photographer. His achievements were recognised by the Queen of England when, in 1981, he was awarded a C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire). In that same year he was also honoured with a major retrospective exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Flash: The Making of Weegee the Famous
Arthur Fellig's ability to arrive at a crime scene just as the cops did was so uncanny that he became known as Weegee, claiming that he functioned as a human Ouija board. Weegee documented better than any other photographer the crime, grit, and complex humanity of midcentury New York City. In Flash, we get a portrait not only of the man (both flawed and deeply talented, with generous appetites for publicity, women, and hot pastrami) but also of the fascinating time and place that he occupied. From self-taught immigrant kid to newshound to art-world darling to latter-day caricature - moving from the dangerous streets of New York City to the celebrity culture of Los Angeles and then to Europe for a quixotic late phase of experimental photography and filmmaking - Weegee lived a life just as vivid as the scenes he captured. Flash is an unprecedented and ultimately moving view of the man now regarded as an innovator and a pioneer, one whose photographs are among the most powerful images of urban existence ever made.

Andy Summers: A Certain Strangeness
Andy Summers, former guitarist and composer of the legendary band The Police, has built a unique photographic body of work to parallel his musical oeuvre. According to Summers, these photographs constitute the mental and visual counterpart of his music, marked by a complex melodic search and harmonies of rather melancholic and even convulsive colors. Summers compares these autobiographical photographs to tearing the pages of an intimate diary and reconfiguring them into a new visual syntax. Summers borrows the title, A Certain Strangeness, from the poet Coleridge, saying that the phase succinctly captures a photograph's ability to open a viewer's eye wide. Andy Summers has had several photographic books devoted to him. Designed by Gilles Mora, in close collaboration with the artist, this book presents the most creative visual work of photographer/musician Andy Summers, including many unpublished images. A long autobiographical text by Summers tells of his passion for photography. A text by Gilles Mora situates Summers's photographic work in American modernist photography.

Moon Shine: Photographs of the Cumberland Plateau
Moon Shine explores musical heritage in America's Appalachian region. Old-time music, faith, and story-telling all inform this portrait of place. These photographs were made along the serpentine mountain roads between Signal Mountain and Cumberland Gap, tracing Tennessee's Cumberland Trail corridor. Listening to the sounds of revelation springing from deep in the hollow, Boillot considered how this might translate to visual imagery. Boillot is still somewhere out there on one of those roads and she is still listening.

Walker Evans: Kitchen Corner
An examination of one of Walker Evans's iconic photographs of the Great Depression. Kitchen Corner, Tenant Farmhouse, Hale County, Alabama shows a painstakingly clean-swept corner in the house of an Alabama sharecropper. Taken in 1936 by Walker Evans as part of his work for the Farm Security Administration, Kitchen Corner was not published until 1960, when it was included in a new edition of Walker Evans and James Agee's classic Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. The 1960 reissue of Evans and Agee's book had an enormous impact on Americans' perceptions of the Depression, creating a memory-image retrospectively through Walker's iconic photographs and Agee's text. In this latest addition to the Afterall One Work series, photographer Olivier Richon examines Kitchen Corner. The photograph is particularly significant, he argues, because it uses a documentary form that privileges detachment, calling attention to overlooked objects and to the architecture of the dispossessed. Given today's growing economic inequality, the photograph feels pointedly relevant. The FSA, established in 1935, commissioned photographers to document the impact of the Great Depression in America and used the photographs to advertise aid relief. For four weeks in the summer of 1936, Evans collaborated with Agee on an article about cotton farmers in the American South. The result of that project was the landmark publication Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, documenting three sharecropper families and their environment. These photographs were intimate, respectful portraits of the farmers, and of their homes, furniture, clothing, and rented land. Kitchen Corner powerfully evokes Agee's observations of the significance of bareness and space in these homes: general odds and ends are set very plainly and squarely discrete from one another... [giving] each object a full strength it would not otherwise have.
