The Photographs of Ralston Crawford
Best known for his modernist paintings and prints, the multitalented artist Ralston Crawford (1906-1978) maintained a deep and intensive interest in photography throughout his career, using the camera as a tool of both documentary and artistic expression. This exquisitely produced publication provides a fresh, comprehensive look at Crawford's photographs from 1938 through the mid-1970s, including both well-known works and previously unpublished images. Some of his photographic images served as the basis for paintings and prints, but many more were made for their own sake as photographs, capturing a wide variety of subjects, from pristine industrial forms to the vibrant street life and musical culture of New Orleans. This volume locates Crawford's photographic production in the context of his overall artistic career and within the creative currents of his time, enhancing our understanding of Crawford as an artist and serving as the best and most up-to-date study of his photographs.

Paris Revisited
In this ode to the charms of Paris and Parisian style, Belgian photographer Henk van Cauwenbergh captures the essence of the city's most iconic venues and its perennially chic denizens. He seeks out the culinary hotspots of Paris and turns his camera on the places to see and be seen. Inspired by the microcosm of Saint-Germain, his Paris is imbued with the spirit of the places where people gather: the casual efficiency of waiters at Les Deux Magots and the Cafe de Flore, the boisterous atmosphere of Brasserie Lipp. Long influenced by urban and innate style of Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Aznavour, Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau, van Cauwenbergh's Paris is one of seduction and nonchalance, of beautiful women, and the heady emotions of first love.

Recovered Memory: New York and Paris 1960-1980 is a meditation on time and place: before the internet and 24/7 news; when one could visit the Eiffel Tower without seeing police and automatic weapons, when a ride on the New York subway cost 15 cents, when the smell of fresh-baked baguettes wafted over nearly every Parisian neighborhood, and when the Coney Island parachute ride still thrilled thousands. Van Riper's striking black and white photographs spanning twenty years, coupled with his eloquent texts, capture the 20th-century romance and grit of New York more than a half century ago, and Paris, some forty years ago. It was a time when the pace of life was slower and somehow less threatening, people talked to each other instead of texting on their iPhones, and you literally had to stop and smell the coffee.

Sun Gardens: The Cyanotypes of Anna Atkins
Anna Atkins (1799-1871) came of age in Victorian England, a particularly fertile environment for learning and scientific discovery. Guided by her father, a prominent scientist, Atkins was inspired by William Henry Fox Talbot to take up photography and was friends with Sir John Herschel, who invented the cyanotype photographic process in 1842. The next year, Atkins began making cyanotypes in an effort to illustrate and distribute information about her herbarium. The result was Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, the first book to be illustrated with photographs. A decade later, she and her friend Anne Dixon expanded their visual inquiry to flowering plants, feathers, and other subjects. This volume is a revised and expanded edition of a long out-of-print monograph that first secured Atkins's place in the history of photography. It draws upon years of careful research and sets Atkins and her work in the proper context. Supplementary texts shed new light on her productions and on the cyanotype process, which is still used by artists today. The photographs themselves-ethereal, deeply hued, and wonderfully intricate-are brought to life with exquisite reproductions that are certain to win Atkins a new generation of followers.

August Sander (1876-1964) was a documentary photographer whose greatest project lasted his entire working life. His series of portrait studies of the German people spanned three eras - the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany - and every social class, combining to form a fascinating social mirror of the country over a tumultuous period in its history. Working with calm determination, Sander cast the same lucid eye on bankers and boxers, soldiers and circus performers, creating strikingly honest images that fulfil his sole ambition: to tell the truth about humanity.

The book sensitively documents the events of the 80's, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent upheavals in the lives of the people. It takes up various stations of recent German history and reveals situations of radical change. Jansson has a very special point of view, always focusing on the people who shape the historic events. She is always very close to the action with her camera, creating proximity and opening doors for encounters. An extensive series leads us into the life of the divided city of Berlin, East and West with their protest and resistance movements. We do not see the well-known photos of mass demonstrations, because the focus is on the feelings of everyone involved in a highly politicized time -in East and West. Jansson's view points to a sometimes absurd reality in the shadow of the cold war. Jansson dedicated another series to the opposition in the former GDR. They are subtle portraits of those people who have helped to change society and make a radical change. These series are supplemented by situations which she has captured in Eastern Europe.

Rachel Cobb: Mistral: The Legendary Wind of Provence
Mistral is a portrait of Provence seen through its legendary wind. Photographer Rachel Cobb illustrates the effects of this relentless force of nature that funnels down France's Rhone Valley, sometimes gusting to hurricane strength. The mistral is not just a weather phenomenon: it is an integral part of the fabric of Provencal life impacting its architecture, agriculture, landscape and culture. Houses have few or no windows on the northwest, windward side and the main entrance on the southern, sheltered side. Rows of trees lining fields create windbreaks to shield crops. Artists have long been drawn to the area for the clear skies that follow a mistral. Nobody who lives or spends time in the region can escape the mistral. It is everywhere yet nowhere to be seen. How do you photograph the wind? With images of a leaf caught in flight, grapevines lashed by powerful gusts ( You can taste the wine better when there's a mistral, a winemaker says), a bride tangled in her veil, and even spider webs oriented to withstand the wind. Out of thin air Cobb makes us feel the unseen. Including an introduction by Bill Buford and an excerpt from Paul Auster about his life in Provence. Cobb draws from writing by Jean Giono, Frederic Mistral and others. The book is designed by Yolanda Cuomo Design, NYC.

Written in candid prose, Gibson takes the reader through his life and career that spans over 50 years. Gibson's story is a fascinating one, from his earliest memories growing up in California to his time in the navy and his continuous love affair with photography. Gibson's memories are time-capsules, filled with rich characters and period details. Often moving, the narratives of his at times troublesome childhood provide a rich background to the charismatic artist Gibson has become. His ruminations on his life so far display a deep, thoughtful understanding and self-awareness that make this book a fascinating read in itself as well as an illuminating companion to his work. Evocatively illustrated, Self Exposure presents Gibson's life story alongside his photographic work, all presented with high quality production values.

Lola Alvarez Bravo: Picturing Mexico
An outstanding exploration of a photographer, educator, and curator whose work both documented and created change in post-Revolutionary Mexico This stunning and lyrical volume highlights the personal work of Lola Alvarez Bravo (1903-1993), one of Mexico's foremost photographers. Alvarez Bravo worked as a photojournalist, commercial photographer, portraitist, and educator and played a critical role in her country's cultural renaissance. In the years following the Mexican Revolution, she captured a profoundly transformative moment for the country's land, architecture, and people. She remains best known for these works and for her portraits of prominent modernists working in Mexico, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Lola Alvarez Bravo delves into a lesser-known body of work, in which attention to pattern, light, and abstraction guides the artist's depictions of urban and rural landscapes and their inhabitants. It also addresses her role in building and securing the legacy of the post-Revolutionary period, her dialogue with modernist photographers, and her place within the broader cultural sphere, offering new insight into the mutual influence she shared with prominent painters, filmmakers, and literary figures of her time.

Oscar G. Rejlander: Artist Photographer
A fascinating survey of the varied career of an inventive and influential 19th-century photographer, from allegorical montage to Darwin's catalogue of emotions Oscar G. Rejlander (1813-1875) was a Swedish-born photographer who pioneered the genre of art photography. He is best known for combining negatives to form elaborate allegorical compositions and for his ability to communicate expression through his photographic studies and portraits. His influence shines in the works of other important photographers of the day. This catalogue accompanies the first major retrospective on this vital yet understudied figure and considers the whole range of his activities, including his work as a painter and printmaker. Lori Pauli introduces Rejlander with a comprehensive survey of his life and career. Three essays follow, from leading scholars in the field of 19th-century photography, with topics ranging from Rejlander's engagement with Victorian painting, to his studio and working methods, to his artistic circle and work with Charles Darwin. Engagingly written and beautifully illustrated, this publication fills a void in scholarship on Rejlander; it also sheds light more broadly on the intersection of art and science and the uses of photography in Victorian culture, as well as the history of photography and its impact on Victorian culture.

In our latest Collective Shorts series, photographer Aaron Tilley explores the notion of narratives and storytelling through carefully constructed and captured still images. Executed in a manner that is playful, yet driven with tension, Tilley's photography exacts an anticipation of the moment that is about to happen. Momentum is a collection of some of Tilley's best work to date. His photography continuously captivates the viewer, leading us to something perhaps unexpected, out of context or that may cause us some unease but in a fun and highly-dramatic way. The aesthetic is bold and well-designed with each image portraying a story at a paused point in time allowing the narrative of the image to be interpreted by the viewer. With this, the viewer should enjoy the surreal element to the work and embrace this style presented throughout the book.

Upstate: Photographs by Tema Stauffer
The photographs of Upstate explore the community, culture, landscape and architecture of one of the oldest regions in the country. Located on the shores of the upper Hudson River, the city of Hudson was the first city chartered in the United States in 1785 and it developed rapidly as a thriving whaling and merchant seaport. After an economic downturn in the early 19th century, Hudson's economy rose again during the mid-century through heavy industries such as iron factories and mills. The Hudson River School, a mid-19th century art movement embodied a group of landscape painters such as Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, portrayed the natural beauty of pastoral landscape in the Hudson Valley and themes of discovery, exploration, and settlement. During the 20th century, Hudson's economy suffered with effects of the Great Depression and the closing of its factories and loss of manufacturing jobs. In recent decades, Hudson has experienced new economic growth, revitalization and transformation through a migration of newcomers from larger cities. In many ways, the ups and downs of Hudson's cultural and economic landscape reflect the experiences of industrial cities across America.

Desert Portraits
Capturing an essence of the ancient and surreal is what drives Chiara Zonca's photography of other-worldly landscapes. Inspired by dramatic terrain and open spaces, Zonca has a deep connection with the sights that she captures. This collection, through warm, pastel tones, has been captured in the Atacama desert of Chile and the Bolivian Altiplano. Those are very extreme and harsh environments with high elevation and lack of water resources. Very few animals and plants are present due to the land's arid nature and that enhances the overall feeling of being in a deserted expanse with no sights or sounds. The images evoke a sense of immersion into the places Zonca finds herself in and of the freedom and sense of space these desolate, yet visually striking, landscapes provide. The mood of these images is not one by chance; these portray the emotional and psychological journey undertaken by the photographer to find escapism in natural architecture of the land, an element of responding to the sublime in the world around her. With a strong emphasis on form and colour palate, Desert Portraits , explores craggy landscapes that, for Zonca, represent a moon-like kingdom on Earth. The images transport a viewer to a world wholly of its own where the isolating nature of the images magnify the sense of nature, different natural materials and escapism.

Twenty years ago Traub abandoned all pretense of trying to find specific themes and subjects in his photographic wanderings other than to make Taradiddles, embracing fully the digital image which is always questioned for its further and inherent potential for distortion. Ironically, the witty and sardonic juxtaposition of Traub's images, are only a matter of framing his discoveries - here, there and everywhere. This volume is a collection of trifles that become matters of remarkable social commentary when Traub photographs them - For me, serendipity, coincidence and chance are more interesting than any preconceived construct of our human encounters. (Charles H. Traub) - in a hundred plus images Traub seems to have captured the common incongruities of a global society. Traub took these pictures in more than 60 cities around the world: Dubai, Shanghai, Beijing, Rome, Tunis, Buenos Aires, Budapest, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Santo Domingo, New York, just to name a few.

David Shama: Do Not Feed Alligators
David Shama's first monograph Do Not Feed Alligators takes us on an existential journey into the decayed post-capitalist topography of a largely forgotten America- one where he presents youth engaged in achingly commonplace activities. There is an overarching sense in all of these pictures that his subjects are the angel-headed hipsters of a generation that has somehow been left behind, traversing what is left of a tragic, broken landscape-their thousand-yard stares seeking Elysian fields glinting seductively in the setting sun of their minds, far beyond the edge of the world. Shama employs Americana to map a narrative of existence among the flotsam and jetsam of society, where abandoned cars, vacated diners and dive motels act as the leitmotif of a journey into being and nothingness. While there are flashes of naturalistic beauty in the way in which his young muses are caught in the eye of his lens, there is no sentimentality, rather every frame contains a haunted, limbo-esque atmosphere. These figures, we are always aware, count their number among the beautiful and the damned. Ultimately, Do Not Feed Alligators seeks to suggest that we are all on a metaphorical road to nowhere- an apocalyptic landscape of the soul that is both beautiful in its mundane temporality, and boundless in its potential for quietly enticing mythology.

Emily Andersen - Portraits: Black & White
Emily Andersen has been making photographic portraits of the international avant-garde since graduating from the Royal College of Art in the early 1980s. Having started out by finding her way into some pretty cool-sounding private parties in London and New York, she began convincing artists and musicians to pose for her - from Nan Goldin to Nico. Over the past thirty-five years, she has built up a remarkable and beautiful portfolio that includes many high-profile writers, poets, film directors, actors and architects, with Peter Blake, Michael Caine, Derek Jarman, Zaha Hadid, Arthur Miller, Helen Mirren, Michael Nyman and Eduardo Paolozzi among those featured in this new publication devoted to her black-and-white portraits. In addition to celebrities, Andersen has documented many interesting and inspiring figures who are celebrated and respected within their fields, offering an invaluable insight into the lives of people who have made significant contributions to the wider cultural and creative life of the USA, Britain and Europe over the current and recent generations. An illuminating essay by critic Jonathan P. Watts not only explores the lives of some of Andersen's many sitters and the photographs she has taken of them, but also get to grips with ideas such as the nature of portraiture, photojournalism and the limitations of the documentary photograph, framing them within debates of the late 1980s onwards. `While all of these portraits may not be recognisably activist images', asserts Watts, `they're rooted in the belief of a micro-politics of everyday lives and relationships.' Readers can discover more about the background, circumstances and dynamics of many of the shoots by means of notes prepared by Andersen herself to accompany each image, which are regularly entertaining and thought-provoking as well as informative. Beyond capturing the essence of these figures and of the times in which they are living, Andersen has a particular talent for entering into their private lives and private spaces, often being invited into her sitters' own homes. By photographing family members and friends, she gets an angle on them that is often deeply personal, sensitive and honest. Creating works that are carefully composed and choreographed and yet regularly informal and relaxed, there is always, somehow, a sense that Andersen is more interested in encouraging her subjects to speak through her images than in imposing her own impressions upon them. It is also fascinating to note how Andersen is often keen to document the young children of celebrities, especially girls, and has made a substantial body of work of fathers and daughters. She is always interested to know what these young women grew up to be, and sometimes returns to photograph the same people years, if not decades, later. Andersen has been commissioned for innumerable magazines and newspapers including the New Musical Express (NME), The Face, Elle Deco, Domus, The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Sunday Telegraph and The Economist, and has been commissioned by publishers such as Quadrille, Simon and Schuster, Oxford University Press, Hachette, Random House and Harper Collins. Her works have been exhibited internationally in venues including The Photographers' Gallery, London; The Institute of Contemporary Art, London; The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh; The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham; Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; and China Arts Museum, Shanghai. A winner of the John Kobal prize for portraiture, she has a number of works in The National Portrait Gallery, London and in other public collections including The British Library, London, and The Contemporary Art Society, London. Andersen is a senior lecturer in photography at Nottingham Trent University. Designed by Melanie Mues of Mues Design, London, with reprography by DPM, London, and printed by EBS, Verona, this stunning hardback monograph has been released in both a trade edition published by Anomie and as an artist's limited edition of fifty signed and numbered copies, accompanied by an original print. The cover image is of the Chilean-French filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky and his son, Axel, in London in 1989.

Personal Icons: In Search of Genuine Individualism
Sven Jacobsen photographs people in their multitude of forms and activities. His lens captures individuality in each and every subject and his work is in constant demand throughout the media world. In this new book, he has chosen to highlight extraordinary and unusual characters who portray their own unique beauty, often far away from the expected norms that society offers. He has chosen them because he believes that they stand for something special, that they have an opinion of their own and are living their lives while staying true to themselves and their beliefs. The book is a master-class in portrait photography, and will appeal to a wide audience, ranging from other successful commercial photographers, to people delighted to celebrate their own individuality through sharing these images. Today we have access to almost everything and anything we want, whenever we want it, to the point of losing our identity as individuals. People evolve from free, creative, playful kids into consumers. They adopt and act based on whatever comes to their mind at the given moment. There are very few things left that are still unique. Sven Jacobsen is drawn to people who portray their own unique beauty far away from the expected norms society offers, simply showing their own strong personality.

Matt Cashore, a 1994 graduate of Notre Dame, has been photographing the university for over twenty years, and was named the 2016 University Photographer of the Year by the University Photographers Association of America. Kerry Temple is a 1974 Notre Dame graduate who has been writing about the university for forty years and serves as the editor of Notre Dame Magazine. Cashore and Temple have combined their talents in a magnificent new coffee-table book, This Place Called Notre Dame. Cashore's photographs beautifully document campus life, capturing the quads, the architecture, the academics, football festivities, the faith life, and student fun of contemporary Notre Dame. Now these images have been collected into one volume conveying the beauty, character, and spirit of the university. Accompanying Cashore's photographs is text by Kerry Temple, an astute university observer and writer whose articles and essays have chronicled the nature, traditions, and growth of Notre Dame over the past four decades. The result of this collaboration is a volume that speaks of Notre Dame with insight, artistry, and affection that will be treasured and enjoyed by students, alumni, faculty, staff, and all who have experienced and love the university.

Martin Parr: Tbilisi
One of the most accomplished photojournalists alive today, Martin Parr turns his lens toward Tbilisi, Georgia's capital, and captures the beauty of this vibrant city. With curiosity and zeal, Martin Parr has been photographing people and the way we live for more than thirty years. One of the leading members of the Magnum Photos collective, Parr has traveled the world to investigate the international phenomena of leisure, consumption, and communication. His often humorous images juxtapose the peculiar with the familiar. The growing city of Tbilisi is the perfect subject for Parr's eloquent portraits. A burgeoning travel destination, Tbilisi straddles 21st-century European chic with world-weary Soviet influences. At street markets and high-end stores, gyms and the opera house, family parties and casinos, Parr documents, in his own inimitable way, a dynamic, ever-changing city that feels simultaneously utterly foreign and completely familiar.

Concrete? That characterless stuff of parking lots or Communist tower blocks, right? Well, yes. And no. Concrete is actually a name applied to a remarkably wide range of building substances, and, when properly handled, is one of the noble materials of contemporary architecture. A kind of liquid stone at the outset, it is malleable, durable, and capable of prodigious feats of engineering. This Bibliotheca Universalis edition highlights the best work done in concrete of recent years. It includes such stars as Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, and Steven Holl, but also surprising new architects like the Russians SPEECH and artists such as James Turrell, who turned the famous concrete spiral of Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim in New York into the setting of one of his most remarkable pieces.

Flowers for Lisa: A Delirium of Photographic Invention
Best known for his surreal camera obscura pictures and luminous black-and-white photographs of books, photographer Abelardo Morell now turns his transformative lens to one of the most common of artistic subjects, the flower. The concept for Flowers for Lisa emerged when Morell gave his wife, Lisa, a photograph of flowers on her birthday. Flowers are part of a long tradition of still life in art, writes Morell. Precisely because flowers are such a conventional subject, I felt a strong desire to describe them in new, inventive ways. With nods to the work of Jan Brueghel, douard Manet, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ren Magritte, and others, Morell does just that; the images are as innovative as they are arresting.
