Michael Christopher Brown: Yo Soy Fidel
Yo Soy Fidel follows the cortege of Fidel Castro, former Cuban revolutionary and politician, over a period of several days in late 2016. Michael Christopher Brown leaned out a rear passenger window of his passing vehicle in order to photograph Cubans waiting alongside the highway for Fidel's military convoy, carrying his cremated remains from Havana to Santiago, to pass. The route mirrored Fidel's post-revolution journey from Santiago to Havana in 1959, which helped solidify his hero and legend. In Yo Soy Fidel , fragments of this initial image have survived his death though perhaps inevitably lead to a question of what is to come. A country largely seen for half a century as a symbol of dignity and hope in the fight against imperialism, Cuba has a choice - stay true to Fidel's revolutionary path or succumb to globalization and all it entails.

Gildersleeve: Wacoas Photographer
It was 1905 when the man destined to become Waco's photographer first opened his shop.Fred Gildersleeve documented the city he loved, establishing his legacy through iconic images that have become Waco's visual memory. The 186 Gildersleeve images within capture the spirit of early Waco. Born in 1880 in Boulder, Colorado, Gildersleeve spent most of his childhood in Kirksville, Missouri. Throughout his early years, Gildersleeve sold his pictures for 25 cents apiece to pay for his education, working his way through photography school in Effingham, Illinois before launching his career in Waco. An adventurer, Gildersleeve was known for speeding through town on an Excelsior motorbikeaand later in a Model T Fordawith his assistant in the sidecar. He avidly took pictures of everyday life in Waco, becoming the official photographer for Baylor and the State Fair of Texas. From special occasions to sporting events, from construction projects to key figures, Gildersleeve documented Waco's growth as a thriving industrial city during the early days of the twentieth century. Gildersleeve's photos are not just history; they are art. He pioneered panoramas and aerial shots using Waco as his subject. Gildersleeve's photos are now known for their clarity and detail that resemble and surpass modern-day digital photography. The photos in this book take viewers back in time to their favorite Waco landmarks and do so with timeless creativity.

Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Photography
This monumental publication rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman, whose photography was considered radical for its time. For Brigman to objectify her own nude body as the subject of her photographs at the turn of the 20th century was ground-breaking; to do so outdoors in a near-desolate wilderness setting was revolutionary. Brigman s significance spanned both coasts: in Northern California, where she lived, she was known as a poet, a critic, and a member of the Pictorialist photography movement. On the East Coast, her work was promoted by Alfred Stieglitz, who elected her as a fellow of the prestigious Photo-Secession. The special deluxe packaging for this publication includes a box containing two volumes: one large book is devoted to Brigman s entire career, covering such topics as Brigman s work within the contexts of the California Arts and Crafts movement and New York Modernism, and the relevance of her work to contemporary conversations regarding gendered landscapes of the American frontier. Also included is a smaller book with Brigman s poetry and reproductions of Brigman s original Songs of a Pagan.

The photographs in this book reflect Bob Tabor's unique intimacy with horses. Each portrait combines the inner strength, spirit and gentle power of nature's most beautiful athlete. Only natural light is used to illuminate every muscle, every hair, every sinew, as Bob's aim was to meet his subjects on their own terms. In turn, his subjects have allowed him to capture their very souls; he's given the horses a voice and allowed them to speak for themselves.

Cashore and Temple have combined their talents in a magnificent new coffee-table book, This Place Called Notre Dame. Cashore's photographs beautifully document campus life, capturing the quads, the architecture, the academics, football festivities, the faith life, and student fun of contemporary Notre Dame. Humanity in the Street: New York City 1960-1989 documents the resilience and power of the multiracial humanity that American photographer Builder Levy experienced in the city streets of New York during these decades. At that turbulent time, people around the world were struggling for freedom and independence and throughout United States people were marching in the streets for improving their life conditions. This exhaustive monograph gathers pictures that Levy took during the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam protests in the 1960s, the peace march that was held in 1962 in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis; the poverty-ravaged Brooklyn of the 1960s, 70s and 80s; the inner city communities where he was a New York City teacher of at-risk adolescents for 35 years; Martin Luther King at Reception in 1968 after the W.E.B. Du Bois Centennial Tribute at Carnegie Hall where he gave the keynote speech; and marches and demonstrations in support of the Freedom struggle; for a NYC civilian review board and to stop police killings; for quality education for all NYC children, and against NYC school segregation.

Harry Gruyaert: Edges
The `edges' that Harry Gruyaert, a pre-eminent member of the Magnum photo agency, explores in this incredibly lush, full-colour book, are the oceans, seas and rivers where humans meet the edge and the water begins. This unusual volume, which opens from the top up, takes the reader to Israel's Dead Sea, the Mali River in Niger, the North Sea of Iceland, South Korea and Biarritz, as Gruyaert's sensitive photos record the subtle chromatic vibrations of the edges of the Orient and the Occident. Gruyaert opposes the hustle of the city with a pared-down, yet intense, nature. His landscapes are never empty; they are inhabited places where light, colour, objects, people and situations weave a serene, sublime tableau. This beautifully produced photographic manifesto reveals the profoundly poetic character of Gruyaert's work, and the sensual elegance of his faultless compositions.

Vivian Maier: A Photographer's Life and Afterlife
Who was Vivian Maier? Many people know her as the reclusive Chicago nanny who wandered the city for decades, constantly snapping photographs, which were unseen until they were discovered in a seemingly abandoned storage locker. They revealed her to be an inadvertent master of twentieth-century American street photography. Not long after, the news broke that Maier had recently died and had no surviving relatives. Soon the whole world knew about her preternatural work, shooting her to stardom almost overnight. But, as Pamela Bannos reveals in this meticulous and passionate biography, this story of the nanny savant has blinded us to Maier's true achievements, as well as her intentions. Most important, Bannos argues, Maier was not a nanny who moonlighted as a photographer; she was a photographer who supported herself as a nanny. In Vivian Maier: A Photographer's Life and Afterlife, Bannos contrasts Maier's life with the mythology that strangers-mostly the men who have profited from her work-have created around her absence. Bannos shows that Maier was extremely conscientious about how her work was developed, printed, and cropped, even though she also made a clear choice never to display it. She places Maier's fierce passion for privacy alongside the recent spread of her work around the world, and she explains Maier's careful adjustments of photographic technique, while explaining how the photographs have been misconstrued or misidentified. As well, Bannos uncovers new information about Maier's immediate family, including her difficult brother, Karl-relatives that once had been thought not to exist. This authoritative and engrossing biography shows that the real story of Vivian Maier, a true visionary artist, is even more compelling than the myth.

Jimmy Nelson: Homage to Humanity
Acclaimed British photographer Jimmy Nelson presents his latest collection of 400 evocative photographs revealing an inclusive look at the people and cultures of over thirty iconic tribes from around the world. From the Himalayas with the Laylap in Bhutan to the last hidden outposts of Africa with the Mundari in isolated South Sudan, these tribal cultures, many which have long been hidden from the world's eyes, are documented with an intimacy and knowledge that only Nelson can conjure. This new assemblage of voyages is accompanied by insightful, engaging interviews with tribe leaders, infographics on the locations and cultures of each destination, and a new mobile application that allows readers to view; film material, behind the scenes video, storytelling, and interviews from all the journeys--inviting readers on a journey to the remotest places on earth. Before They Pass Away II celebrates each tribe's distinct aesthetic cultural heritage and is a visual document, perhaps even the last record, that reminds us and future generations of the beauty and harmony of these tribes and the purity of their way of life. This unique volume--truly an invaluable time capsule of the last surviving tribes--is an essential for travel and photography enthusiasts. Nelson's large-plate field camera captures every minute detail, vivid colour, and dramatic light to produce awe-inspiring portraits of tribal members: from head-on shots, to visual narratives documenting quotidian life, rituals, and rites of passage, and striking pictures of marvellous and sometimes harsh landscapes.

Elements of Architecture focuses on the fragments of the rich and complex architectural collage. Window, facade, balcony, corridor, fireplace, stair, escalator, elevator: the book seeks to excavate the micro-narratives of building detail. The result is no single history, but rather the web of origins, contaminations, similarities, and differences in architectural evolution, including the influence of technological advances, climatic adaptation, political calculation, economic contexts, regulatory requirements, and new digital opportunities. It's a guide that is long overdue-in Koolhaas's own words, Never was a book more relevant-at a moment where architecture as we know it is changing beyond recognition. Derived, updated, and expanded from Koolhaas's exhaustive and much-lauded exhibition at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, this is an essential toolkit to understanding the fundamentals that comprise structure around the globe. Designed by Irma Boom and based on research from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the 2,600-page monograph contains essays from Rem Koolhaas, Stephan Trueby, Manfredo di Robilant, and Jeffrey Inaba; interviews with Werner Sobek and Tony Fadell (of Nest); and an exclusive photo essay by Wolfgang Tillmans. In addition to comprehensively updated texts and new images, this edition is designed and produced to visually (and physically) embody the immense scope of its subject matter: Custom split-spine binding: our printer modified their industrial binding machine to allow for the flexible, eight-centimeter thick spineContains a new introductory chapter with forewords, table of contents, and an index, located in the middle of the book (where it naturally opens due to its unique spine)Printed on 50g Opakal paper, allowing for the ideal level of opacity needed to realize Boom's palimpsest-like designTranslucent overlays and personal annotations by Koolhaas and Boom are woven in each chapter to create an alternative, faster route through the bookPrinted at the originally intended 100% size for full readability

Meet the People with Love
As well as being an incredible stage performer, a brilliant writer and a talented painter, Derren Brown is also a fantastic street photographer. Here, for the first time, is a selection of his work. As he writes of his passion: 'Street photography is a fitting refuge for those who look at life from a distance. It both sanctifies our remoteness (by offering the standpoint of the observer) and challenges it, insisting we approach with a spritely curiosity. It offers a safe route back into the world: the camera is an entry ticket to daunting social situations and extraordinary environments where we might otherwise feel entirely out of place. Suddenly we have a role: a reason to be present. And for those of us smitten by its appeal, it provides a means of fortifying and forgetting ourselves, while extending out into the world with a controlled compassion.'

For twenty-five years, he preferred to use black and white, with an uncompromising formal and compositional rigor and a technique rooted in contrast, a technique he would continue to seek even in his later work with colour. The catalogue celebrates Fulvio Roiter with essays by Italo Zannier and Denis Curti and an anthology of writings on his art. The photographs are organized into thematic sections: Venice in Black and White, The Tree, Venice in Colour, Italy in Black and White, Around the World and A Man Without Desires.

Steve Kahn: The Hollywood Suites
In 1974 the photojournalist and art photographer Steve Kahn began a series of provocative black-and-white Polaroids of porn-industry models posing in seedy Hollywood apartments. What began as an exploration of staged photography and portraiture evolved over the next three years into The Hollywood Suites, a multi-faceted conceptual project in which Kahn turned his lens away from the models to deconstruct their seemingly mundane and monotonous surroundings. Endlessly fascinating, Kahn's series touches on myriad themes including bondage, containment, isolation, and the poetics of absence. This volume includes more than 100 works arranged in chronological groupings based on the original Polaroid film sessions and features essays that offer a scholarly assessment of a groundbreaking work.

Anton Corbijn: 1-2-3-4 (New Edition)
Representing the ultimate publication on the music photography of Anton Corbijn, one of the most important photographers and directors working today, this collection of images, many never before published, focuses on Corbijn's evolving fascination with the music industry, from the 1970s to the present day. Anton Corbijn's interest in music has been the engine of an illustrious decades-long career that has most recently involved the making of feature length films such as The American, A Most Wanted Man, and Life, due to be released in 2015. This gloriously illustrated, oversized book pays homage to Corbijn's obsession with rock and roll--an interest that has led to lifelong friendships with Bono, Michael Stipe, Dave Gahan, and other iconic musicians. Looking back over four decades, it features hundreds of creative, offbeat images that Corbijn was able to capture largely as a result of his close relationships with his subjects. Nearly every revered musician and band is represented in Corbijn's archives: Nick Cave to Nirvana, U2 to R.E.M., the Rolling Stones to Siouxie and the Banshees. Many of the portraits are accompanied by their subjects' own take on Corbijn's distinct style and approach. Also included here are previously unpublished photos of the late Joe Cocker and the band Depeche Mode, who consider him an honorary member. A fitting tribute to an innovative and deeply passionate photographer, this book will rock fans of music and photography.

Phenotypes/Limited Forms
This book is an extension of the interactive installation Phenotypes/Limited Forms. The installation encourages visitors to pick their favorite subjects out of a total of several hundreds of displayed photographs, rearrange them, name their sequences, and print them in the form of a fanfold. The publication analyzes the 30 000 sequences selected by the public. A detailed demonstration of the applied algorithms helps us to understand the connection between the photographs, the number of times they were chosen by an individual visitor, and how the visitors named their personal selection of images. The book traces the creative processes and the interaction of the visitors with the material of the installation as a work of art highly dependent on the involvement of the audience. Essays by curators and art historians discuss the subject on a theoretical level while examining the aspects of participation and emancipation as well as the question of the autonomy of images.

Liu Xiadong: Retrospective
The Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong is one of the most famous contemporary artists in Asia. His oeuvre depicts moments of human life with an extraordinary immediacy and exceptional empathy. A family, a refugee boat, agricultural workers, or the demi-monde - he shows a wealth of subjects, representing the unlimited diversity of people and cultures. His work is characterised throughout by the greatest possible degree of openness and tolerance toward the other. Kunsthalle and NRW-Forum Dusseldorf are staging a major double exhibition on the artist. It is the first retrospective show dedicated to him in the world. The accompanying monograph attempts to capture the tremendous complexity of Liu Xiaodong's art. It contains a selection of works from 1983-2018, about 60 paintings, drawings, photographs, and film stills. Liu has always sympathetically portrayed minorities both in and outside China. For the very first time, this book showcases paintings from his project 'Transgender/Gay' - a series of portraits from Berlin's gay and transgender scene, which Liu created in 2018 while staying in the German capital. Text in English and German.
