Skin Biophysics: From Experimental Characterisation to Advanced Modelling
This book presents state-of-the-art experimental and modelling techniques for skin biophysics that are currently used in academic and industrial research. It also identifies current and future challenges, as well as a growing number of opportunities in this exciting research field. The book covers the basics of skin physiology, biology, microstructural and material properties, and progressively introduces the reader to established experimental characterisation protocols and modelling approaches. Advanced topics in modelling theories and numerical implementation are also presented. The book focusses especially on: 1. Basic physiology, molecular biology, microstructural and material properties of the skin. 2. Experimental characterisation techniques for the skin (including imaging): in vivo and in vitro techniques and combination of those with in silico approaches. 3. State-of-the-art constitutive models of the skin: elastic, anelastic and mechanobiological formulations (e.g. growth, ageing, healing). 4. Applications: mechanics, damage, biological growth, healing, ageing and skin tribology. This book is addressed to postgraduate students in biomedical/mechanical/civil engineering, (bio)physics and applied mathematics, postdoctoral researchers, as well as scientists and engineers working in academia and industry engaged in skin research, particularly, if at the cross-roads of physical experiments, imaging and modelling. The book is also be of interest to clinicians/biologists who wish to learn about the possibilities offered by modern engineering techniques for skin science research and, by so doing, provide them with an incentive to broaden their outlook, engage more widely with the non-clinical research communities and, ultimately, help cross-fertilising new ideas that will lead to better treatment plans and engineering solutions.

Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine - Volume 11: Acne Vulgaris
The eleventh volume in the Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine series is a must read for Chinese medicine practitioners interested in dermatology. Using a 'whole evidence' approach, this book aims to provide an analysis of the management of acne vulgaris with Chinese and integrative medicine. This book describes the understanding and management of acne vulgaris with conventional medicine and Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine treatments used in past eras are analysed through data mining of classical Chinese medicine books. Several treatments are identified that are still used in contemporary clinical practice. Attention is then turned to evaluating the current state of evidence from clinical studies using an evidence-based medicine approach. Scientific techniques are employed to evaluate the results from studies of Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and other Chinese medicine therapies. The findings from these reviews are discussed in terms of the implications for clinical practice and research.Chinese medicine practitioners and students can use this book as a desktop reference to support clinical decision making. Having ready access to the current state of evidence for herbal formulas and acupuncture treatments allows practitioners to be confident in providing evidence-based health care. This book provides an innovative 'whole evidence' approach to the management of acne vulgaris. Multiple types of evidence from different sources are reviewed and synthesized to provide a summary of the available evidence.Interventions, including oral and topical Chinese herbal medicine, body and ear acupuncture and combinations of these therapies, are evaluated for their effect on acne lesion count and severity, and impact on health-related quality of life.Chinese medicine treatments that have been frequently used in clinical studies provide guidance for patient care. This book links formulas, herbs and acupuncture points with treatment efficacy, providing the reader with potential for creating new formulas. The editors of this series are internationally recognised, well-respected leaders in the field of Chinese medicine and evidence-based medicine with strong track records in research.

Dermatoscopy and Skin Cancer: A handbook for hunters of skin cancer and melanoma
From reviews: This new textbook provides an invaluable resource for new and improving students of dermoscopy both to read and reference. It offers a methodical and comprehensive guide to understanding dermoscopy and using it to assess skin lesions. ...The breadth of material included and the clarity of writing have created a book that I suspect will be highly influential in its field, with the potential to become a standard reference for students of dermoscopy. Ulster Medical Journal Training your eyes to recognize the subtle but important vascular and pigmented dermatoscopic patterns characteristic of melanoma and other skin cancers can be challenging and confusing. The clinical details in the color dermatoscopic photographs in this book are overall excellent and the findings are marked with different colored arrows. Each finding is described as what it represents histologically, making it easier to understand what a pseudopod, clod, etc., represents in a malignant lesion. Dermatoscopic signs of malignancy are described in a step-by-step fashion. Multiple examples are shown giving readers a feeling for the range of how these features can present. There are very clear explanations of why these findings are indicative of a malignant process. For novices, learning how to observe the proper patterns and vascular patterns can be daunting. From studying the multitude of dermatoscopic photographs, readers can begin to understand the subtleties that confirm the difference between benign and malignant lesions. There are decision tree diagrams to help in determining if a lesion is benign or malignant by categorizing it initially whether or not pigment is present, and then systematically evaluating it for the presence or absence of ulceration, white clues , and vessel morphology. Doody's Reviews Dermatoscopy and Skin Cancer is a handbook to help dermatologists, dermatoscopists and GPs easily differentiate between benign and malignant tumours, leading to fewer unnecessary biopsies and earlier treatment of cancers. Based around two easy to follow algorithms, Chaos and Clues and Pigment without Prediction, the book shows all dermatoscope users how to confidently diagnose skin lesions earlier and with greater precision. In addition, this handbook also provides coverage of: * the microanatomy of the skin * specimen processing and histopathology * the language of dermatoscopy to help name and define structures and patterns * approaches to skin examination and photodocumentation * revised pattern analysis as an additional diagnostic algorithm * dermatoscopic features of common and significant lesions. Using over 450 high quality images the authors provide a detailed algorithmic approach to assessing the skin - an approach that has been successfully taught to thousands of doctors around the world.

Dirty Looks: The Secret to Beautiful Skin
Every year, nearly 80 million Americans will consult their doctors about their skin. In fact, skin disorders beat out anxiety, depression, back pain, and diabetes as the number one reason Americans see their doctors. Unfortunately, however, the vast majority will receive only a surface-level treatment, leaving the underlying conditions at the root of their skin issues unresolved. Skin doesn't lie; it reflects overall health in unimaginable ways. Dirty Looks, internationally renowned dermatologist and scientist Dr. Whitney Bowe shows readers that skin health is much more than skin deep. As a pioneering researcher on the cutting edge of the gut-brain-skin axis, she explains how the spectrum of skin disorders -- from stubborn acne and rosacea to psoriasis, eczema, and premature wrinkling -- are manifestations of irregularities rooted in the gut. Lasers, scalpels, creams, and prescription pads alone will not guarantee the consistently healthy, glowing skin we all seek. Instead, Dr. Bowe focuses on the microbiome -- where trillions of microbes speak to your skin via the brain -- and highlights the connection between sleep, stress, diet, gastrointestinal health, and the health of your skin. With simple explanations of the science, do-it-yourself practical skincare strategies, and a life-changing 3-week program, Dirty Looks is your roadmap to great skin from the inside out and the outside in.

Injectable Fillers: Facial Shaping and Contouring
In the innovative field of cosmetic dermatology, the range of products and methods available to patients is expanding all the time. Prominent among these are facial fillers, which, when injected into and beneath the skin, help alleviate wrinkles and improve smoothness. However, the many fillers on offer have varying characteristics and effects, and practitioners must be properly trained in order to administer them safely and successfully. Injectable Fillers offers those performing these popular procedures an in-depth and far-reaching survey of current best practices, with a strong emphasis on safety. Covering everything from the science behind facial fillers to their appropriate means of application, the book places each product in context, demonstrating the pros and cons of the expanding range of hyaluronic acids and calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres, and exploring injectable submental fat reduction with sodium deoxycholate. This second edition broadens the scope of discussion to also include chin, mandible, temple, nose, brow, and forehead injections, as well as the use of cannulas as an alternative to needles.
