Functional Histoanatomy of the Human Larynx
This book presents the anatomical and histological structure of the human larynx by demonstrating gross, histological, and electron microscopic photographs for all professionals interested in the human larynx. In the first part, sagittal, horizontal and coronal whole-organ serial sections of adult and newborn larynges are shown in color photographs. The whole-organ serial histological sections of the human larynx are very unique in the world. In the second part, the functional morphology of the human larynx is also shown in superb and breathtaking photographs. The specimens in this textbook have been assembled into a concise synopsis of laryngology commonly encountered in clinical practice. Functional Histoanatomy of the Human Larynx is intended to facilitate an in-depth understanding not only the structure of each component but also the special relationships between them, as well as the microstructure and functional morphology of the human larynx and of the vocal fold as a vibrating tissue. Lavishly illustrated and documented, this book offers a wealth of information on the functional morphology of the larynx.

This book is dedicated to a specific component of paleoneurology, probably the most essential one: endocasts. A series of original papers collected here focuses on describing methods and techniques that are dedicated to reconstruct and study fossil endocasts through computed tools. The book is particularly oriented toward hominid paleoneurology, although it also includes chapters on different taxa to provide a more general view of current perspectives and problems in evolutionary neuroanatomy. The first part of the book concerns techniques and tools to cast endocranial anatomy. The second part deals with computed morphometrics, and the third part is devoted to comparative neurobiology. Those who want to approach the field in general terms will find this book especially helpful, as will those researchers working with endocranial anatomy and brain evolution. The book will also be useful for researchers and graduate students in anthropology, bioarchaeology, medicine, and related fields.

Cross-Sectional Atlas of the Human Head: With 0.1-mm pixel size color images
This superb color atlas sets a new standard in neuroanatomy by presenting around 300 detailed thin-sectioned images of the human head, including the brain, with 0.1-mm intervals and a pixel size of 0.1 mm x 0.1 mm. A new reference system employed for this purpose is clearly explained, and structures are fully annotated in the horizontal, coronal, and sagittal planes. Recent advances in 7T MRI and 7T TDI have considerably enhanced imaging of the human brain, thereby impacting on both neuroscience research and clinical practice. Moreover, the information gained from initiatives involving photography of thin slices of human cadavers, such as the Visible Human Projects, Visible Korean and Chinese Visible Human, has enriched knowledge of neuroanatomy and thereby facilitated the interpretation of such ultra-high-field resolution images. The exquisite images contained within this atlas will be invaluable in providing both researchers and clinicians with important new insights.

Bourgery. Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery
We owe a great debt to Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) for his Atlas of Anatomy, which was not only a massive event in medical history, but also remains one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published.Bourgery began work on his magnificent atlas in 1830 in cooperation with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), a student of the French painter Jacques Louis David. The first volumes were published the following year, but completion of the treatise required nearly two decades of dedication; Bourgery lived just long enough to finish his labor of love, but the last of the treatise's eight volumes was not published in its entirety until five years after his death. The eight volumes of Bourgery's treatise cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques (exploring in detail nearly all the major operations that were performed during the first half of the 19th century), general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacob's spectacular hand-colored lithographs are remarkable for their clarity, color, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting a combination of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research. Unsurpassed to this day, the images offer exceptional anatomical insight, not only for those in the medical field but also for artists, students, and anyone interested in the workings and wonder of the human body.

Secrets of the Human Body
206 bones. One heart. Two eyes. Ten fingers. You may think you know what makes up a human. But it turns out our bodies are full of surprises. What makes tears of joy different from tears of sadness? Why is a gut feeling so much smarter than you think? And why is 90% of you not even human? You may think you know the human body - heart, lungs, brain and bones - but your body is full of extraordinary mysteries that science is only just beginning to understand. This book, which accompanies a major new BBC TV programme, will change the way we think about our bodies. Doctors are in the business of keeping secrets, but medical confidentiality isn't just about privacy, shame or discretion. It's about vulnerability to exploitation. In this ground-breaking new book, the effervescent van Tulleken twins bring their knowledge and charm to the page to reveal just how well our bodies keep secrets from the things that want to exploit it: bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, larger predators and, crucially, other people. They uncover the remarkable stories behind the science we are not meant to know, on matters of life and death. Leading us through these revelations are tales of everyday miracles - the human stories that bind every one of us together through the universal stages of life. From the most extreme environments on Earth to the most extreme events, Chris and Xand reveal the incredible abilities every human shares. Arranged around the three themes of learning, survival and growth, this book shows the human body like never before. Combining cutting-edge science and technology with stunning photography that gives us a tantalising glimpse beneath our skin, the van Tullekens reveal the secrets that make very ordinary human body ... extraordinary.

Neuroanatomy: Draw It to Know It, Third Edition teaches neuroanatomy in a purely kinesthetic way. In using this book, the reader draws each neuroanatomical pathway and structure, and in the process, creates memorable and reproducible schematics for the various learning points in Neuroanatomy in a hands-on, enjoyable and highly effective manner. In addition to this unique method, Neuroanatomy: Draw It to Know It also provides a remarkable repository of reference materials, including numerous anatomic and radiographic brain images and illustrations from many other classic texts to enhance the learning experience. In the third edition of this now-classic text, the author completely reorganized the book based on user-feedback, taking a more intuitive and easy-to-use approach. For the first time, the illustrations are in full color. No other text in neuroanatomy engages the reader in as direct a manner as this book and none covers the advanced level of detail found while retaining the simplistic approach to the learning which has become the cornerstone of the text. Neuroanatomy: Draw It to Know It is singular in its ability to engage and instruct without overwhelming any level of neuroanatomy student.

The Deeper Genome: Why There is More to the Human Genome Than Meets the Eye
Over a decade ago, as the Human Genome Project completed its mapping of the entire human genome, hopes ran high that we would rapidly be able to use our knowledge of human genes to tackle many inherited diseases, and understand what makes us unique among animals. But things didn't turn out that way. For a start, we turned out to have far fewer genes than originally thought - just over 20,000, the same sort of number as a fruit fly or worm. What's more, the proportion of DNA consisting of genes coding for proteins was a mere 2%. So, was the rest of the genome accumulated 'junk'? Things have changed since those early heady days of the Human Genome Project. But the emerging picture is if anything far more exciting. In this book, John Parrington explains the key features that are coming to light - some, such as the results of the international ENCODE programme, still much debated and controversial in their scope. He gives an outline of the deeper genome, involving layers of regulatory elements controlling and coordinating the switching on and off of genes; the impact of its 3D geometry; the discovery of a variety of new RNAs playing critical roles; the epigenetic changes influenced by the environment and life experiences that can make identical twins different and be passed on to the next generation; and the clues coming out of comparisons with the genomes of Neanderthals as well as that of chimps about the development of our species. We are learning more about ourselves, and about the genetic aspects of many diseases. But in its complexity, flexibility, and ability to respond to environmental cues, the human genome is proving to be far more subtle than we ever imagined.

We like to think of ourselves as highly evolved creatures. But if we are evolution's greatest creation, why are we so badly designed? We have retinas that face backward, the stump of a tail, and way too many bones in our wrists. We must find vitamins and nutrients in our diets that other animals simply make for themselves. Millions of us can't reproduce successfully without help from modern science. We have nerves that take bizarre paths, muscles that attach to nothing, and lymph nodes that do more harm than good. And that's just the beginning of the story. As biologist Nathan H. Lents explains, our evolutionary history is a litany of mistakes, each more entertaining and enlightening than the last. As we will discover, by exploring human shortcomings, we can peer into our past, because each of our flaws tells a story about our species' evolutionary history. A rollicking, deeply informative tour of our four-billion-year-long evolutionary saga, Human Errors both celebrates our imperfections - for our mutations are, in their own way, a testament to our species' greatness - and offers an unconventional accounting of the cost of our success.
