Yoga Therapy for Arthritis: A Whole-Person Approach to Movement and Lifestyle
Yoga therapy is commonly used for the management of arthritis, but often focusses exclusively on adaptation of the physical poses and on structural solutions. This book moves beyond the traditional routines to present yoga as a lifestyle designed to improve quality of life and overall well-being for individuals living with arthritis and rheumatic conditions. By incorporating the ancient practices of yoga as both physical and mental exercises involving a model of 5-koshas or sheaths (physical, energetic, mental/emotional, wisdom, and spiritual), the yoga therapy practice presented here will help reduce pain and shift the perspective of the individual living with arthritis. This therapy uses a whole-person approach that employs a broad range of tools to address the biopsychosocial effects of arthritis through the application of yoga practices and philosophy. Useful as a guide for people living with arthritis, this book is full of inspiration for self care along with instructions for yoga teachers and medical professionals to guide their clients using this whole-person perspective.

Pain Nation: Sick, Stressed, and All F*cked Up: Is CBD the Cure?
A brilliant, original exploration of how the CBD revolution is going to transform Americans' lives. We are an anxious and uptight nation on the brink, divided by a broken political system and a president who is pushing us over the edge. Many of us are agitated about terrorism, guns, religious fundamentalism, and refugees. With only 5% of the global population, we consume 80% of the world's prescription opioids, antidepressants, and amphetamines--addictive drugs prescribed by medical doctors and known to cause paranoia, homicidal tendencies, and psychosis. Even those who aren't prescribed these medicines are accessing them--think kids using their parents' medication--with disastrous results. Those who can't access opiates through legal means are finding them on the street, resulting in an opioid crisis with overdoses on the rise. The United States has the highest level of suicide in the world. We're stressed, both mentally and physically. We're a nation in pain. How do we deal with this pervasive sickness? CBD (cannabidiol), perhaps the most profound plant medicine ever discovered. Extensive research over the last decade shows that this miracle molecule of the cannabis plant helps with countless medical conditions like nothing we've seen before (and no, it can't get you high). CBD has a proven effect on everything from chronic pain and epilepsy to anxiety and depression. In this provocative book, Klee Irwin makes a compelling case that we should stop being afraid to try this plant medicine. CBD could be the answer so many Americans are seeking.

Since AlphaGo defeated Ke Jie (who was then ranked 1st among all human players worldwide) May 2017, the art of Go (otherwise known as Weiqi) has entered a new era. Similarly, if we apply artificial intelligence (AI) to herbal medicine, the art of herbal prescription can experience a game change too. The author of this book has done exactly that, and via reverse engineering of the trained AI, the book details how one can compose herbal prescriptions from scratch. As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies outperform humans in such tasks as image/voice recognition and language translation, mastering of concentrated herbal extract granules (CHEG) prescription composition by AI is not a fiction, provided large quantities of high-quality CHEG prescription data are available. Thanks to the 340 million records of modern Western medicine diagnoses and corresponding CHEG prescriptions in the National Health Insurance Reimbursement Database (Taiwan) recorded in the decade between 2004 and 2013, the book is based on the results of applying state-of-the-art deep learning technologies to the CHEG prescription big data.

Traditional and Complementary Medicines: Are they Ethical for Humans, Animals and the Environment?
This book provides a systematic analysis of the ethical implications of traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM), focusing on pragmatic solutions. The author uses a bioethical methodology called the Ethical Matrix, to consider the impact of T&CM use for animals and the environment as well as for humans. A systematic search of the literature reveals that most published ethical concerns are related to the safety of T&CM use for humans. However, application of the Ethical Matrix demonstrates that the ethical implications for T&CM use are much broader. In this book, the author analyses the most serious implications, including adverse events related to homeopathy, the use of animals in T&CM products, and the impact of herbal medicine on the environment. Comparisons with the ethical implications of conventional biomedicine help readers to contextualise debate, and highlight aspects that may be unique to T&CM. Globally, many high-level health policy makers promote T&CM as an accessible and affordable healthcare option. However, their use is considered by some to be a waste of resources, unscientific, and unethical. Offering a frank analysis of this largely ignored field of healthcare ethics, this book is both timely and essential. It helps patients, policy makers, practitioners, researchers, and students gain the knowledge they need to make more informed decisions.

Bioregulatory Medicine: An Innovative Holistic Approach to Self-Healing
Over half of the world's population is afflicted with some form of chronic or degenerative illness. Heart disease, autoimmune disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, cancer, Lyme disease--the list goes on. The conventional, allopathic, treat-the-symptom-with-pharmaceutical-drugs model is rapidly falling out of favor as patients are searching for nontoxic, advanced prevention and healing modalities that actually work. Bioregulatory Medicine introduces a model that has proven effective for decades in other more forward-thinking developed countries, including Switzerland and Germany. Our bodies have many bioregulating systems, including the cardiovascular, digestive, neurological, respiratory, endocrine, and so on. Bioregulatory medicine is a comprehensive and holistic approach to health that advocates the use of natural healing methods to support and restore the body's intrinsic self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms, as opposed to simply treating symptoms with integrative therapies. Bioregulatory medicine is about discovering the root cause of disease and takes into account the entire person from a genetic, epigenetic, metabolic, energetic, and emotional point of view. So while patients may have the same disease or prognosis, the manifestation of illness is entirely bioindividual and must be treated and prevented on an individual level. Bioregulatory Medicine addresses the four pillars of health--drainage and detox, diet, mind-body medicine, and oral health--using a sophisticated synthesis of the very best natural medicine with modern advances in technology. In addition to identifying the cause of disease, bioregulatory medicine promotes disease prevention and early intervention of illness through noninvasive diagnostics and treatments, and incorporates the use of over 100 different non-toxic diagnostics and treatments from around the world. Forward-thinking patients and integrative practitioners will find Bioregulatory Medicine invaluable as they seek to deepen their understanding of the body's many regulating systems and innate ability to heal itself.

Plant and Human Health, Volume 1: Ethnobotany and Physiology
Early anthropological evidence for plant use as medicine is 60,000 years old as reported from the Neanderthal grave in Iraq. The importance of plants as medicine is further supported by archeological evidence from Asia and the Middle East. Today, around 1.4 billion people in South Asia alone have no access to modern health care, and rely instead on traditional medicine to alleviate various symptoms. On a global basis, approximately 50 to 80 thousand plant species are used either natively or as pharmaceutical derivatives for life-threatening conditions that include diabetes, hypertension and cancers. As the demand for plant-based medicine rises, there is an unmet need to investigate the quality, safety and efficacy of these herbals by the scientific methods . Current research on drug discovery from medicinal plants involves a multifaceted approach combining botanical, phytochemical, analytical, and molecular techniques. For instance, high throughput robotic screens have been developed by industry; it is now possible to carry out 50,000 tests per day in the search for compounds, which act on a key enzyme or a subset of receptors. This and other bioassays thus offer hope that one may eventually identify compounds for treating a variety of diseases or conditions. However, drug development from natural products is not without its problems. Frequent challenges encountered include the procurement of raw materials, the selection and implementation of appropriate high-throughput bioassays, and the scaling-up of preparative procedures. Research scientists should therefore arm themselves with the right tools and knowledge in order to harness the vast potentials of plant-based therapeutics. The main objective of Plant and Human Health is to serve as a comprehensive guide for this endeavor. Volume 1 highlights how humans from specific areas or cultures use indigenous plants. Despite technological developments, herbal drugs still occupy a preferential place in a majority of the population in the third world and have slowly taken roots as alternative medicine in the West. The integration of modern science with traditional uses of herbal drugs is important for our understanding of this ethnobotanical relationship. Volume 2 deals with the phytochemical and molecular characterization of herbal medicine. Specifically, it focuess on the secondary metabolic compounds, which afford protection against diseases. Lastly, Volume 3 discusses the physiological mechanisms by which the active ingredients of medicinal plants serve to improve human health. Together this three-volume collection intends to bridge the gap for herbalists, traditional and modern medical practitioners, and students and researchers in botany and horticulture.

Cannabinoids and the Brain
A review of the scientific evidence on the effects of cannabinoids on brain and behavioral functioning, with an emphasis on potential therapeutic use. The cannabis plant has been used for recreational and medicinal purposes for more than 4,000 years, but the scientific investigation into its effects has only recently yielded useful results. In this book, Linda Parker offers a review of the scientific evidence on the effects of cannabinoids on brain and behavioral functioning, with an emphasis on potential therapeutic uses. Parker describes the discovery of tetrahydocannbinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of cannabis, and the further discovery of cannabinoid receptors in the brain. She explains that the brain produces chemicals similar to THC, which act on the same receptors as THC, and shows that the endocannabinoid system is involved in all aspects of brain functioning. Parker reports that cannabis contains not only the psychoactive compound THC, but also other compounds of potential therapeutic benefit, and that one of them, cannabidiol (CBD), shows promise for the treatment of pain, anxiety, and epilepsy. Parker reviews the evidence on cannabinoids and anxiety, depression, mood, sleep, schizophrenia, learning and memory, addiction, sex, appetite and obesity, chemotherapy-induced nausea, epilepsy, and such neurodegenerative disorders as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's Disease. Each chapter also links the scientific evidence to historical and anecdotal reports of the medicinal use of cannabis. As debate about the medical use of marijuana continues, Parker's balanced and objective review of the fundamental science and potential therapeutic effects of cannabis is especially timely.
