Mathematical and Physical Papers 5 Volume Paperback Set
Sir George Stokes (1819-1903) established the science of hydrodynamics with his law of viscosity describing the velocity of a small sphere through a viscous fluid. He published no books, but was a prolific lecturer and writer of papers for the Royal Society, the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the Victoria Institute and other mathematical and scientific institutions. These collected papers (issued between 1880 and 1905) are therefore the only readily available record of the work of an outstanding and influential mathematician, who was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in Cambridge for over fifty years, Master of Pembroke College, President of the Royal Society (1885-90), Associate Secretary of the Royal Commission on the University of Cambridge and a Member of Parliament for the University.

The Greek astronomer and geometrician Apollonius of Perga (c.262-c.190 BCE) produced pioneering written work on conic sections in which he demonstrated mathematically the generation of curves and their fundamental properties. His innovative terminology gave us the terms 'ellipse', 'hyperbola' and 'parabola'. The Danish scholar Johan Ludvig Heiberg (1854-1928), a professor of classical philology at the University of Copenhagen, prepared important editions of works by Euclid, Archimedes and Ptolemy, among others. Published between 1891 and 1893, this two-volume work contains the definitive Greek text of the first four books of Apollonius' treatise together with a facing-page Latin translation. (The fifth, sixth and seventh books survive only in Arabic translation, while the eighth is lost entirely.) Volume 1 contains the first three books, with the editor's Latin introductory matter. Volume 2 contains the fourth book in addition to other Greek fragments and ancient commentaries, notably that of Eutocius.

Principles of Geometry 6 Volume Paperback Set
Henry Frederick Baker (1866-1956) was a renowned British mathematician specialising in algebraic geometry. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1898 and appointed the Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry in the University of Cambridge in 1914. First published between 1922 and 1925, the six-volume Principles of Geometry was a synthesis of Baker's lecture series on geometry and was the first British work on geometry to use axiomatic methods without the use of co-ordinates. The first four volumes describe the projective geometry of space of between two and five dimensions, with the last two volumes reflecting Baker's later research interests in the birational theory of surfaces. The work as a whole provides a detailed insight into the geometry which was developing at the time of publication.

AQA A Level Maths: Year 1 + Year 2 Statistics Student Workbook (Pack of 10)
This Student Workbook provides supplementary support and practice for the statistics topics in AQA's new linear specification. Designed to work alongside the Oxford AS and A Level Student Books, this Workbook offers both focussed revision sections and exam-style practice. The revision sections provide quick recaps and highlight common exam errors. The exam-style practice questions offer full coverage of the new Assessment Objectives, including the new emphasis on problem-solving and modelling. With guidance on AQA's 'Large dataset' (a new component of the exams from 2018) and with answers being written directly onto the page, this Workbook provides realistic practice for the actual exam. Answers are in the back of the book with full step-by-step solutions provided online. The new A Level specification (2017) contains 100% prescribed content, meaning statistics has become mandatory for the first time since 2000. This Workbook is the perfect course companion, for both the confident and less confident statisticians.

Oeuvres de Desargues 2 Volume Set
The French mathematician and engineer Gerard Desargues (1591-1661) was one of the founders of projective geometry. Desargues' theorem is named in the honour of this prolific writer of treatises on geometry and its application to the arts and architecture. His important writings, which had been lost, were published in 1864 by the mathematician and scientific historian Noel-Germinal Poudra (1794-1894). Poudra's two-volume edition of his treatises, republished here, reveals the major role played by Desargues in the scientific debates of the seventeenth century. It includes a biography of Desargues, in which Poudra discusses his role as architect, as well as his influence on famous scientists of his time including Pascal and Descartes. Poudra also reproduces some of the - often critical - responses to Desargues' work by his contemporaries.

In 1770, one of the founders of pure mathematics, Leonard Euler (1707-1783), published an algebra textbook for students. It was soon translated into French, with notes and additions by Joseph-Louis Lagrange, another giant of eighteenth-century mathematics, and the French edition was used as the basis of the English edition of 1822 (which also appears in this series), and of this 1790s German edition by Johann Philipp Gruson, Professor of Mathematics to the royal cadets. This set brings together volume 1 which begins with elementary mathematics of determinate quantities and includes four sections on simple calculations and progresses to compound calculations, ratios and proportions, and volume 2 which consists of two parts: 16 chapters on algebraic equations, followed by 15 chapters on analyses of indeterminate quantities.

Oeuvres completes de Niels Henrik Abel 2 Volume Set: Nouvelle edition
Niels Henrik Abel (1802-29) was one of the most prominent mathematicians in the first half of the nineteenth century. His pioneering work in diverse areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry and mechanics has made the adjective 'abelian' a commonplace in mathematical writing. These collected works, first published in two volumes in 1881 after careful preparation by the mathematicians Ludwig Sylow (1832-1918) and Sophus Lie (1842-99), contain some of the pillars of mathematical history. Volume 1 includes perhaps the most famous of Abel's results, namely his proof of the 'impossibility theorem', as well as his 'Paris memoir', which contains his many fundamental results on transcendental functions. Volume 2 contains additional articles on elliptic functions and infinite series. It also includes extracts from Abel's letters, as well as detailed notes and commentary by Sylow and Lie on Abel's pioneering work.

The Selected Works of J. Frank Adams 2 Volume Paperback Set
J. Frank Adams, one of the world's leading topologists, solved a number of celebrated problems in algebraic topology, a subject in which he initiated many of the most active areas of research. His papers written between 1955 and 1988, few of which have been superseded, are characterised by elegant writing and depth of thought. These two 1992 volumes contain all his major research contributions. The first contains papers on: the cobar construction, the Adams spectral sequence, higher-order cohomology operations, and the Hopf invariant one problem, amongst other topics. The second volume is mainly concerned with Adams' contributions to: characteristic classes and calculations in K-theory; modules over the Steenrod algebra and their Ext groups; finite H-spaces and compact Lie groups; and maps between classifying spaces of compact groups. Anyone interested in algebraic topology will want to own a copy of these volumes as a historical record and a source of reference.

The Collected Papers of Lewis Fry Richardson 2 Volume Paperback Set
Throughout his life Lewis Fry Richardson made many inspired contributions to various disciplines. Often his ideas were ahead of contemporary thinking, and preceded the technical means necessary for their practical implementation. He is best known for his wealth of important work on meteorology and his groundbreaking application of mathematics to the causes of war. But his field of interest was in no way limited to these and various aspects of psychology and mathematical approximation also benefited from his novel modes of thought. Richardson had a rare determination to trust his own ideas, even when they were not well received. These two volumes show that much of his thinking has long been underrated and that much of his work was ahead of its time.
