Exploring Abstract Algebra With Mathematica (R)
This upper-division laboratory supplement for courses in abstract algebra consists of several Mathematica packages programmed as a foundation for group and ring theory. Additionally, the user's guide illustrates the functionality of the underlying code, while the lab portion of the book reflects the contents of the Mathematica-based electronic notebooks. Students interact with both the printed and electronic versions of the material in the laboratory, and can look up details and reference information in the user's guide. Exercises occur in the stream of the text of the lab, which provides a context within which to answer, and the questions are designed to be either written into the electronic notebook, or on paper. The notebooks are available in both 2.2 and 3.0 versions of Mathematica, and run across all platforms for which Mathematica exits. A very timely and unique addition to the undergraduate abstract algebra curriculum, filling a tremendous void in the literature.

The Essentials of a First Linear Algebra Course and More Linear Algebra, Geometry and Transformation provides students with a solid geometric grasp of linear transformations. It stresses the linear case of the inverse function and rank theorems and gives a careful geometric treatment of the spectral theorem. An Engaging Treatment of the Interplay among Algebra, Geometry, and Mappings The text starts with basic questions about images and pre-images of mappings, injectivity, surjectivity, and distortion. In the process of answering these questions in the linear setting, the book covers all the standard topics for a first course on linear algebra, including linear systems, vector geometry, matrix algebra, subspaces, independence, dimension, orthogonality, eigenvectors, and diagonalization. A Smooth Transition to the Conceptual Realm of Higher Mathematics This book guides students on a journey from computational mathematics to conceptual reasoning. It takes them from simple identity verification proofs to constructive and contrapositive arguments. It will prepare them for future studies in algebra, multivariable calculus, and the fields that use them.

An H(b) space is defined as a collection of analytic functions which are in the image of an operator. The theory of H(b) spaces bridges two classical subjects: complex analysis and operator theory, which makes it both appealing and demanding. The first volume of this comprehensive treatment is devoted to the preliminary subjects required to understand the foundation of H(b) spaces, such as Hardy spaces, Fourier analysis, integral representation theorems, Carleson measures, Toeplitz and Hankel operators, various types of shift operators, and Clark measures. The second volume focuses on the central theory. Both books are accessible to graduate students as well as researchers: each volume contains numerous exercises and hints, and figures are included throughout to illustrate the theory. Together, these two volumes provide everything the reader needs to understand and appreciate this beautiful branch of mathematics.

Modeling Nature: Cellular Automata Simulations with Mathematica (R)
A guide to using Mathematica so as to explore cellular automata within natural phenomena, such as insect colonies, bird flight paths and even DNA sequencing. Designed for physicists, life scientists, and engineers - in fact, everyone dealing with fractals - the book first introduces Mathematica before going on to provide the valuable information needed to properly motivate the code and run the simulations presented in the book. All these simulations have been tested both inside and outside the classroom setting, allowing the book's use as reference material as well as a textbook or course supplement. Packaged together with a DOS diskette enabling cross-platfform access to the code. The files will also be accessible via the World Wide Web.

Symmetry Theory in Molecular Physics with Mathematica: A new kind of tutorial book
Prof. McClain has, quite simply, produced a new kind of tutorial book. It is written using the logic engine Mathematica, which permits concrete exploration and development of every concept involved in Symmetry Theory. It is aimed at students of chemistry and molecular physics who need to know mathematical group theory and its applications, either for their own research or for understanding the language and concepts of their field. The book begins with the most elementary symmetry concepts, then presents mathematical group theory, and finally the projection operators that flow from the Great Orthogonality are automated and applied to chemical and spectroscopic problems.

A First Course in Abstract Algebra: Rings, Groups, and Fields, Third Edition
Like its popular predecessors, A First Course in Abstract Algebra: Rings, Groups, and Fields, Third Edition develops ring theory first by drawing on students' familiarity with integers and polynomials. This unique approach motivates students in the study of abstract algebra and helps them understand the power of abstraction. The authors introduce groups later on using examples of symmetries of figures in the plane and space as well as permutations. New to the Third Edition Makes it easier to teach unique factorization as an optional topic Reorganizes the core material on rings, integral domains, and fields Includes a more detailed treatment of permutations Introduces more topics in group theory, including new chapters on Sylow theorems Provides many new exercises on Galois theory The text includes straightforward exercises within each chapter for students to quickly verify facts, warm-up exercises following the chapter that test fundamental comprehension, and regular exercises concluding the chapter that consist of computational and supply-the-proof problems. Historical remarks discuss the history of algebra to underscore certain pedagogical points. Each section also provides a synopsis that presents important definitions and theorems, allowing students to verify the major topics from the section.

London Mathematical Society Student Texts: The Block Theory of Finite Group Algebras 2 Paperback Book Set
This is a comprehensive introduction to the modular representation theory of finite groups, with an emphasis on block theory. The two volumes take into account classical results and concepts as well as some of the modern developments in the area. Volume 1 introduces the broader context, starting with general properties of finite group algebras over commutative rings, moving on to some basics in character theory and the structure theory of algebras over complete discrete valuation rings. In Volume 2, blocks of finite group algebras over complete p-local rings take centre stage, and many key results which have not appeared in a book before are treated in detail. In order to illustrate the wide range of techniques in block theory, the book concludes with chapters classifying the source algebras of blocks with cyclic and Klein four defect groups, and relating these classifications to the open conjectures that drive block theory.

Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications: Non-Associative Normed Algebras 2 Volume Hardback Set
This first systematic account of the basic theory of normed algebras, without assuming associativity, includes many new and unpublished results and is sure to become a central resource for researchers and graduate students in the field. The first volume focuses on the non-associative generalizations of (associative) C*-algebras provided by the so-called non-associative Gelfand-Naimark and Vidav-Palmer theorems, which give rise to alternative C*-algebras and non-commutative JB*-algebras, respectively. The relationship between non-commutative JB*-algebras and JB*-triples is also fully discussed. The second volume revisits JB*-triples, covers Zel'manov's celebrated work in Jordan theory, proves the unit-free variant of the Vidav-Palmer theorem, and develops the representation theory of alternative C*-algebras and non-commutative JB*-algebras. The book interweaves pure algebra, geometry of normed spaces, and complex analysis, and includes a wealth of historical comments, background material, examples and exercises. The authors also provide an extensive bibliography.
