Writing in Limbo: Modernism and Caribbean Literature
In Simon Gikandi's view, Caribbean literature and postcolonial literature more generally negotiate an uneasy relationship with the concepts of modernism and modernity-a relationship in which the Caribbean writer, unable to escape a history encoded by Europe, accepts the challenge of rewriting it. Drawing on contemporary deconstructionist theory, Gikandi looks at how such Caribbean writers as George Lamming, Samuel Selvon, Alejo Carpentier, C. L. R. James, Paule Marshall, Merle Hodge, Zee Edgell, and Michelle Cliff have attempted to confront European modernism.

Exotic Nations: Literature and Cultural Identity in the United States and Brazil, 1830-1930
In this highly original and critically informed book, Renata R. Mautner Wasserman looks at how, during the first decades following political independence, writers in the United States and Brazil assimilated and subverted European images of an exotic New World to create new literatures that asserted cultural independence and defined national identity. Exotic Nations demonstrates that the language of exoticism thus became part of the New World's interpretation of its own history and natural environment.

Olive Senior
This book offers the first sustained and comprehensive discussion of the Jamaican writer, Olive Senior's extensive oeuvre, including poetry, short stories and socio-cultural writings published from the late 1970s onwards. Now resident in Toronto, Senior's work remains intensely focused on Jamaica: its landscape, language, people and cultures. Her work offers portraits of 'ordinary' Jamaicans negotiating the harsh postcolonial realities of life within Jamaica as well as those who migrate in search of work. The book discuss Senior's scrutiny of the way power operates at global and local levels alerting the reader to the bigger historical narratives that position (but don't quite 'fix') the individuals she writes about. The detailed inventory of Jamaican life in the short stories and poetry is consolidated in Senior's cultural archival work. Deploying a poetics of wry understatement, Senior's oeuvre insinuates rather than declaims its truths and makes a distinct and invaluable intervention in Caribbean Literature.

Colonial Latin American Literature: A Very Short Introduction
A vivid account of the literary culture of the Spanish-speaking Americas from the time of Columbus to Latin American Independence, this Very Short Introduction explores the origins of Latin American literature in Spanish and tells the story of how Spanish literary language developed and flourished in the New World. A leading scholar of colonial Latin American literature, Rolena Adorno examines the writings that debated the justice of the Spanish conquests, described the novelties of New World nature, expressed the creativity of Hispanic baroque culture in epic, lyric, and satirical poetry, and anticipated Latin American Independence. The works of Spanish, creole, and Amerindian authors highlighted here, including Bartolome de las Casas, Felipe Guaman Poma, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, and Andres Bello, have been chosen for the merits of their writings, their participation in the larger literary and cultural debates of their times, and their resonance among readers today.
