Ovid Amores II: A Selection
This is the endorsed publication from OCR and Bloomsbury for the Latin A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Ovid's Amores, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary for Amores 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.10, 2.12. A detailed introduction covers the prescribed text to be read in English, placing the poems in their Roman literary context. Ovid's Amores represent the culmination of Roman love elegy, and the selection from Book II presented here shows the poet at the height of his literary and sexual powers. From dead parrots and eunuch slaves to the elusive mistress Corinna, Ovid teases and tantalises, deftly reworking themes and motifs from his elegiac predecessors to produce verse of effortless sophistication, wit and charm, poems that for the last two thousand years have scandalised and delighted readers in equal measure. Horace Satires: A Selection
This is the endorsed publication from OCR and Bloomsbury for the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 3) prescription of Horace's Satires, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary for Satires 1.1 lines 1-12, 28-100; 1.3 lines 25-75; and 2.2 lines 1-30, 70-111. A detailed introduction places the poems in their Roman literary context. `Telling the truth with a smile' is the way Horace describes his approach to satire in this, his first published poetry. The poems in this collection discuss universal ideas of how we should live our lives simply with regard to money, ambition, food and friendship and how to live contented with what nature provides rather than always yearning for more. The poet does this in a manner which is light but not flippant, always entertaining and powerfully moving at the same time. Horace Odes: A Selection
This is the endorsed publication from OCR and Bloomsbury for the Latin A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Horace's Odes, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary for Odes 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.6. A detailed introduction covers the prescribed text to be read in English, placing the poems in their Roman literary context. Horace was the finest lyric poet in Latin and these four of the six `Roman Odes', written in the early years of the rule of the first Roman emperor Augustus, show his poetic power at full stretch. They discuss issues of political and moral concern for the regime and its citizens with the clarity of a deeply personal and unique voice, making clever use of mythology and literary allusion and coining some of the most resonant phrases in the Latin language. Apuleius Metamorphoses V: A Selection
This is the endorsed publication from OCR and Bloomsbury for the Latin A-Level (Group 2) prescription of Apuleius' Metamorphoses V, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary for sections 11-24. A detailed introduction covers the prescribed text to be read in English, placing the work in its Roman literary context. Apuleius is considered one of the great Latin stylists. The tale of Cupid and Psyche, a story set within the larger narrative of his novel, the Metamorphoses, follows the romance of the god of love, Cupid, and his mortal lover, Psyche, brought to disaster by the wiles of Psyche's wicked sisters and the anger of Venus, but eventually reconciled. It is both an adventure story, and an allegory for the relationship between the soul and desire. The OCR selection contains some of the most hauntingly beautiful Latin prose which has come down to us and gives an unparallelled insight into the relationship between philosophy, religion, and art under the high empire. Cicero Philippic II: A Selection
This is the endorsed publication from OCR and Bloomsbury for the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 1) prescription of Cicero's Philippic II sections 44-50 (... viri tui similis esses) and 78 (C. Caesari ex Hispania redeunti...)-92, and the A-Level (Group 2) prescription of sections 100-119, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed text to be read in English for A Level. It is 44 BC. Following Caesar's assassination, his supporters are looking for a new leader. Caesar's deputy, Antony, and the 18-year-old Octavian, the future Augustus, are vying with each other to fill the role; each seems more concerned with personal power than the good of Rome. Cicero returns to the city to try to save it with the one weapon at his disposal: his oratory. In this speech, the longest of the Philippics (so-called after a series of speeches made against Philip of Macedon), Cicero starts by defending his own career and then - the part we read - demolishes Antony's. A masterpiece of invective, it ensures Antony's bitter hostility and Cicero's eventual elimination. Resources are available on the Companion Website www.bloomsbury.com/ocr-editions-2019-2021
