Grandpa's Noises
Children love laughing about body noises. In Grandpa's Noises, a range of sounds and words coming from body and mouth are explained in a warm and funny intergenerational romp. Children look at life with open, honest eyes but sometimes it takes a bit of thinking and code-breaking to work out what's really going on. Fortunately, for this particular grandchild, while Grandpa's noises might be a mystery to many, he knows just what they mean! For example, Eyenolessgofurawark is obviously Grandpa-speak for I know, let's go for a walk . Aaaahhh means the cup of tea is just perfect, and Pissphusshawertt is that sinking sound Grandpa makes when he needs a rest in his chair. And once you know that Eeeawoscreech! is actually the sound of a misbehaving hearing aid, Grandpa becomes a lot less scary and even more lovable. Of course some sounds - like the Fffffffft that sometimes escapes Grandpa's bottom, and Dad's - need no explanation!

A Box of Bones
Twelve-year-old Kallie despises nonsense. She believes there's a rational explanation for everything, despite the good-natured prodding of her Grandpa Jess, who takes her to frivolous wastes of time like their town's local Festival of Fools. There, Kallie meets a faceless man (must be some kind of mask) who gives her a strange wooden puzzle box (must be some kind of gimmick). Intrigued despite herself, Kallie sets to work on unlocking its secrets and . . . . lets something out. From here Kallie's life begins to entangle with another world, a world where Liah, a young bone carver, journeys with her master to sell wares to a wicked Queen. The sights, sounds, smells, and spells of Liah's world are beginning to leak into Kallie's, and if Kallie can't decipher the meaning of her own story, the end might be far from happy.

Ten-year-old Fritz's tranquil life on the family farm is about to end--the Russians are near, Hitler has died, and known Nazi sympathizers like the Friedrich family brace for the Bolsheviks to take over their town -- in this historical novel for middle-grrade readers. At the end of April 1945 in a small village in eastern Germany, the front is coming closer -- and ten-year-old Fritz knows that the Soviet Army's invasion of his family's home can be only a few days away. Grandpa Karl, a Nazi sympathizer, takes Fritz into the forest that surrounds the family farm to show him a secret. Under a tall pine tree, Grandpa Karl has dug a pit and covered it with branches. The hole is to hide Fritz's family when the Russians invade their village. Grandpa Karl is convinced that he and Fritz will defend the Friedrich family to the death. My Two Grandads
Aston's Grandad Roy played in a steel band and Grandad Harry played the trumpet in a brass band. Aston always enjoyed going to visit them and listen to them practise. But soon he wanted to join in. So he asked Grandad Roy to teach him to play the steel drums and then he asked Grandad Harry to teach him to play the trumpet. He loved practising both instruments. Then the school needs a band to play at the school fair, and both grandads want their own band to play. Finally Aston had an idea - both bands join together to make one big band, and Aston joins in first on steel drums and then on trumpet. This delightful story of a mixed-race family reconciling their very different cultures is a wonderful celebration of diversity. Written by one of Britain's foremost campaigners and media personalities and illustrated by a highly regarded illustrator, this book is sure to build on the success of My Two Grannies.

The Boon family and their indefatigable gallows humor are back in Benny Lindelauf's follow-up to Nine Open Arms. Poised to win a scholarship to the nearby teachers college, Fing has high hopes. It's 1938 and her poor family of nine-one father, four brothers, three sisters, and a grandmother-has finally managed to eke out a living in the tiny cigar factory abutting their dilapidated home. The novel's gripping language, enriched by Yiddish, German, and Dutch dialect, plunges the reader into the world of a large, colorful, motherless family as they navigate the changes World War II visits upon their little town on the border of the Netherlands and Germany. For fans of Inside Out and Back Again and Counting by 7s. Jason has just learned that his Afghan mother has been living illegally in the United States since his father was killed in Afghanistan. Although Jason was born in the US, it's hard to feel American now when he's terrified that his mother will be discovered-and that they will be separated. When he sees his mother being escorted from her workplace by two officers, Jason feels completely alone. He boards a train with the hope of finding his aunt in New York City, but as soon as he arrives in Penn Station, the bustling city makes him wonder if he's overestimated what he can do. After an accident lands him in the hospital, Jason finds an unlikely ally in a fellow patient. Max, a whip-smart girl who wants nothing more than to explore the world on her own terms, joins Jason in planning a daring escape out of the hospital and into the skyscraper jungle-even though they both know that no matter how big New York City is, they won't be able to run forever.

Natasha: I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story. Daniel: I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store-for both of us. The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Tales of a Korean Grandmother
This multicultural children's book presents classic Korean fairy tales and other folk stories providing a delightful look into a rich literary culture. The Korean people possess a folklore tradition as colourful and captivating as any in the world, and yet the stories themselves are not as widely-known to Western readers as those from The Brothers Grimm, Mother Goose, or Hans Christian Andersen. In her bestselling book for young readers, Frances Carpenter has collected thirty-two classic Korean children's stories from the Land of the Morning Calm: the woodcutter and the old men of the mountain; the puppy who saved his village from a tiger; the singing girl who danced the Japanese general into the deep river; Why the dog and cat are not friends; and even a more familiar tale of the clever rabbit who outsmarted the tortoise. The children of the Kim family sit at their beloved Grandmother's knee to listen to these and other traditional folk tales which are rooted in thousands of years of Korean culture.

I Can Fly in the Sky
One day, Little Mo found an injured little bird in her backyard, and she spent all her time nursing the bird back to health. They quickly became friends, so when it was time for the little bird to take flight again, he didn't want to leave without someone to keep him company. Little Mo's father came up with a great idea: since Little Mo couldn't go with the bird, they'd make a friend for him that could fly. Little Mo and her father immediately set to work, creating and painting a bamboo bird friend. As the bamboo bird and little bird took off into the sky together, the bamboo bird seemed to have a truly magical quality. It was able to change shapes, and eventually became a kite, soaring through the sky, while always keeping the little bird company. This bilingual kid's book tells a story of friendship and whimsy in both English and Chinese. The kite, an important symbol in Chinese culture, introduces children to the world's first flying object and the symbolism behind it. With a history of more than 2,000 years, and one of China's major inventions, the kite is a perfect vessel for learning more about China and its people.

The leading lady of this tale longs for a pet cat to cuddle and call her own - a furry fluffball, just like the one in her book. So, after studying her grandma's cat, Hector, she lays a trail with all the things that she knows cats love - balls of wool, saucers of milk, cardboard boxes and catnip aplenty. And then she waits for a cat to come... The legend of The Pied Piper gets an adorably feline twist in this new story from Goodnight Tractor author Michelle Robinson and is brought beautifully to life by illustrator Chinlun Lee.

Charms from cover to cover. --Kirkus (Starred review) When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. In this imaginative take on that popular saying, a child is surprised (and disappointed) to receive a lemon tree from Grandma for her birthday. After all, she DID ask for a new gadget! But when she follows the narrator's careful--and funny--instructions, she discovers that the tree might be exactly what she wanted after all. This clever story, complete with a recipe for lemonade, celebrates the pleasures of patience, hard work, nature, community . . . and putting down the electronic devices just for a while.
