In these areas, you will be inspired by Sandenbergh's creative approaches to divided spaces, stacked spaces, empty spaces, mirrored spaces, and multipurpose furniture. Jeremy Black draws on a wide range of resources, from archival material to the personal recollections of staff and students. He records and analyses the story of the university as it engaged with the need to expand and evolve while responding to constant financial and political pressures. The book includes interviews with leading university figures, contributions from former students, and a postscript looking to the future. It charts the University of Exeter's changing place in the world of higher education. from the author's Preface ... 'In 2013-14, I wrote The City on the Hill: A Life of the University of Exeter, which was published in 2015 as part of the university's Diamond Jubilee. That extensively illustrated and very heavy book is a worthy memorial. This is a different book: it draws on some additional research, while the opportunity to rewrite the study, and bring it up to date has proved welcome. The work has been greatly eased by the great friendship and wonderful co-operation I have encountered. Staff and students, past and present, have given much time, to pass on information and opinion, to answer questions, and to read and comment on drafts.'

John Seymour has inspired thousands to make more responsible, enriching, and eco-friendly choices with his advice on living sustainably. The Worm Farmer's Handbook: Techniques and Systems for Successful Large-Scale Vermicomposting
Techniques and systems for processing food scraps, manure, yard debris, paper, and more Turning waste into wealth sounds too good to be true, but many worm farmers are finding that vermicomposting is a reliable way to do just that. Vermicast--a biologically active, nutrient-rich mix of earthworm castings and decomposed organic matter--sells for $400 or more per cubic yard. Compare that to regular compost, sold at about $30 a cubic yard, and you'll see why vermicomposting has taken root in most countries and on every continent but Antarctica. Vermicomposting is also one of the best sustainable solutions for organic waste management. Vermicomposting manure and crop wastes on farms improves crop yields while reducing demand for off-farm inputs. Vermicast has higher nutrient levels and lower soluble salt content than regular compost, and it improves soil aeration, porosity, and water retention. Plus, vermicast suppresses plant diseases and insect attacks. Municipalities, businesses, community gardens, schools, and universities can set up vermicomposting operations to process food residuals and other waste materials. The Worm Farmer's Handbook details the ins and outs of vermicomposting for mid- to large-scale operations, including how to recycle organic materials ranging from food wastes and yard trimmings to manure and shredded office paper. Vermicomposting expert Rhonda Sherman shares what she has learned over twenty-five years working with commercial worm growers and researchers around the world. Her profiles of successful worm growers across the United States and from New Zealand to the Middle East and Europe describe their proven methods and systems. This book digs into all the details, including: Choosing the right production system Regulatory issues and developing a business and marketing plan Finding and managing feedstocks Pre-composting: why and how to do it Monitoring an active worm bed Harvesting, screening, testing, packaging, and storing vermicast Markets for earthworms and vermicast Food security: how vermicast benefits soils and plants Keys to success: avoiding common pitfalls From livestock farms and restaurants to colleges, military bases, and prisons, Sherman details why and how commercial-scale vermicomposting is a fast-growing, sustainable solution for organic waste management. The Worm Farmer's Handbook is the first and only authoritative how-to guide that goes beyond small-scale operations and demystifies the science and logistics of the fascinating process that is vermicomposting.

Handcrafted: A Woodworker's Story
Clint Harp, maverick carpenter on HGTV's smash hit Fixer Upper and the star of Wood Work on the DIY Network, presents his inspirational memoir that celebrates meaningful work, turning your craft into a career, and recognizing the importance of the journey itself. While Clint Harp is now known as Chip and Joanna Gaines's go-to table maker on Fixer Upper and a nationally acclaimed artisan, his life has not always been the DIY dream we see on the show. Ten years ago, he played the role of what he thought was a good husband, father, and provider, dutifully working at a sales job that came with a healthy paycheck. Yet he kept coming back to his unfilled dream of building furniture. With the support of his wife, the encouragement of a mentor, and a life full of lessons, he finally took the leap, quit his job and set out on a quest to become a carpenter. Without formal training, financing, workspace, or customers, the Harps were quickly on the edge of financial collapse. Than Clint met Chip Gaines at a gas station--a chance encounter that marked the next chapter on a wild ride Clint and his wife, Kelly, wouldn't have imagined possible. Spanning Clint's remarkable journey--from a childhood learning carpentry and hard work at his grandfather's knee, through his struggles to balance pursuing his dreams with supporting his family, to his partnership with Chip and Joanna Gaines and the many adventures and misadventures of filming Fixer Upper--Handcrafted is part memoir and part manual for dreamers. Clint provides unvarnished, thoughtful reflections on a path that is possible for anyone bold enough to pursue it.

Until just a few years ago, turning a light on and off with a clap was about as clever as technology got. Today, almost anything can be connected to the internet, and with this connection comes the ability to turn your bedroom lights off from another country, tell your thermostat to create a weather-appropriate lighting scheme, and answer the door without ever leaving your armchair. This book introduces you to Alexa, Siri, and every major technology competing to smarten your home and improve your life. You'll learn how to choose between them, how to optimize their function, and how to avoid the pitfalls that cause new adopters to wish they'd never let a computer into their home.

Karin Bergoeoe Larsson and the Emergence of Swedish Design
Karin Bergoeoe Larsson (1859-1928) was a mother of eight and wife to Sweden's beloved painter, Carl Larsson. She was herself a well-regarded artist but gave it up when she married, at the request of her husband. Replacing paintbrushes and canvas with needles and cloth, she turned a somewhat ugly cottage-Lilla Hyttnas in the tiny village of Sundborn, Sweden-into a designer showcase. Inspired by the Swedish countryside, she filled the home with handcrafted wall hangings, bed coverings, tablecloths and pillow covers, while she greatly influencing her husband's work by encouraging him to move away from dark oils to more illuminating and light-filled watercolors. The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., considers Karin the first designer of what would become known as Swedish Modern. Her influence continues to inform the concepts of retail giant IKEA.
