American States of Nature: The Origins of Independence, 1761-1775
American States of Nature transforms our understanding of the American Revolution and the early makings of the Constitution. The journey to an independent United States generated important arguments about the existing condition of Americans, in which rival interpretations of the term state of nature played a crucial role. State of nature typically implied a pre-political condition and was often invoked in support of individual rights to property and self-defense and the right to exit or to form a political state. It could connote either a paradise, a baseline condition of virtue and health, or a hell on earth. This mutable phrase was well-known in Europe and its empires. In the British colonies, state of nature appeared thousands of times in juridical, theological, medical, political, economic, and other texts from 1630 to 1810. But by the 1760s, a distinctively American state-of-nature discourse started to emerge. It combined existing meanings and sidelined others in moments of intense contestation, such as the Stamp Act crisis of 1765-66 and the First Continental Congress of 1774. In laws, resolutions, petitions, sermons, broadsides, pamphlets, letters, and diaries, the American states of nature came to justify independence at least as much as colonial formulations of liberty, property, and individual rights did. In this groundbreaking book, Mark Somos focuses on the formative decade and a half just before the American Revolution. Somos' investigation begins with a 1761 speech by James Otis that John Adams described as a dissertation on the state of nature, and celebrated as the real start of the Revolution. Drawing on an enormous range of both public and personal writings, many rarely or never before discussed, the book follows the development of America's state-of-nature discourse to 1775. The founding generation transformed this flexible concept into a powerful theme that shapes their legacy to this day. No constitutional history of the Revolution can be written without it.

Mutinous Memories: A Subjective History of French Military Protest in 1919
This book explores the eight-month wave of mutinies that struck the French infantry and navy in 1919. Based on official records and the testimony of dozens of participants, it is the first study to try to understand the world of the mutineers. Examining their words for the traces of sensory perceptions, emotions and thought processes, it reveals that the conventional understanding of the mutinies as the result of simple war-weariness and low morale is inadequate. In fact, an emotional gulf separated officers and the ranks, who simply did not speak the same language. The revolt entailed emotional sequences ending in a deep ambivalence and sense of despair or regret. Taking this into account, the book considers how mutineer memories persisted after the events in the face of official censorship, repression and the French Communist Party's co-option of the mutiny. -- .

French Revolution of 1830
In this absorbing narrative of the fall of the last Bourbon Monarch, David H. Pinkney resconstructs events in France during the seventeen critical months between August 1829 and December 1830. Beginning with the formation of the Polignac ministry, he traces the development of the conflict betweeen the crown and its opponents, showing how the protest against Charles X's Four Ordinances was turned into revolution by the intervention of the Parisian crowd. Motviated by resentement of the Bourbons, economic distress, and vaguely conceived ideals of the earlier Revolution, the people emerged as a political power again and expelled the royal forces from Paris. The fall of Charles X was followed by a power struggle that ended with the investitutre of Louis-Philippe, king by contract with the Chamber of Deputies. The author examines problems of interest to all students of revolution. What drove teh leaders to revolutionary action? Who were the members of the crowd? What were their motives? What were the effects of revolution on the composition of the ruling elite and on Paris? David H. Pinkney is Professor of History at the University of Washington, and the author of Napoleon III and the Rebuilding of Paris (Princeton). Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. The Shining Path: Love, Madness, and Revolution in the Andes
On 17 May 1980, on the eve of Peru's presidential election, five masked men stormed a small town in the Andean heartland. They set election ballots ablaze and vanished into the night but not before planting a red hammer-and-sickle banner in the town square. The lone man arrested the next morning later swore allegiance to a group called Shining Path. The tale of how this ferocious group of guerrilla insurgents launched a decade-long reign of terror, and how brave police investigators and journalists brought it to justice, may be the most compelling chapter in modern Latin American history but the full story has never been told. Described by a U.S. State Department cable as cold-blooded and bestial , Shining Path orchestrated bombings, assassinations and massacres across the cities, countryside and jungles of Peru in a murderous campaign to seize power and impose a Communist government. At its helm was the professor-turned-revolutionary Abimael Guzman, who launched his single-minded insurrection alongside two women: his charismatic young wife, Augusta La Torre and the formidable Elena Iparraguirre, who married Guzman soon after Augusta's mysterious death. Their fanatical devotion to an outmoded and dogmatic ideology, and the military's bloody response, led to the death of nearly 70,000 Peruvians. Orin Starn and Miguel La Serna's narrative history of Shining Path is both panoramic and intimate, set against the socioeconomic upheavals of Peru's rocky transition from military dictatorship to elected democracy. They take readers deep into the heart of the rebellion and the lives and country it nearly destroyed. We hear the voices of the mountain villagers who organised a fierce rural resistance and meet the irrepressible black activist Maria Elena Moyano and the Nobel Prize-winning novelist Mario Vargas Llosa, who each fought to end the bloodshed. Deftly written, The Shining Path is an exquisitely detailed account of a little-remembered war that must never be forgotten.

The City-State of Boston: The Rise and Fall of an Atlantic Power, 1630-1865
A groundbreaking history of early America that shows how Boston built and sustained an independent city-state in New England before being folded into the United States In the vaunted annals of America's founding, Boston has long been held up as an exemplary city upon a hill and the cradle of liberty for an independent United States. Wresting this iconic urban center from these misleading, tired cliches, The City-State of Boston highlights Boston's overlooked past as an autonomous city-state, and in doing so, offers a pathbreaking and brilliant new history of early America. Following Boston's development over three centuries, Mark Peterson discusses how this self-governing Atlantic trading center began as a refuge from Britain's Stuart monarchs and how-through its bargain with slavery and ratification of the Constitution-it would tragically lose integrity and autonomy as it became incorporated into the greater United States. Drawing from vast archives, and featuring unfamiliar figures alongside well-known ones, such as John Winthrop, Cotton Mather, and John Adams, Peterson explores Boston's origins in sixteenth-century utopian ideals, its founding and expansion into the hinterland of New England, and the growth of its distinctive political economy, with ties to the West Indies and southern Europe. By the 1700s, Boston was at full strength, with wide Atlantic trading circuits and cultural ties, both within and beyond Britain's empire. After the cataclysmic Revolutionary War, Bostoners aimed to negotiate a relationship with the American confederation, but through the next century, the new United States unraveled Boston's regional reign. The fateful decision to ratify the Constitution undercut its power, as Southern planters and slave owners dominated national politics and corroded the city-state's vision of a common good for all. Peeling away the layers of myth surrounding a revered city, The City-State of Boston offers a startlingly fresh understanding of America's history.

Forgotten Revolution [The Centenary Edition] The Limerick Soviet 1919
It is the Spring of 1919. The shots are already fired in the Irish War of Independence and the separatist Dail Eireann holds its first public session. In Limerick, Ireland's fourth largest city, the workers and their representatives take over running the city and their action is declared a `Soviet'. The British authorities see it as a serious threat to their rule in Ireland. The workers are protesting against a severe military law that requires them to get special passes and be checked going to and from work. The restrictions follow the IRA shooting of a policeman and wounding of another while rescuing a Republican hunger striker from hospital. He, too, is wounded and dies. The workers control every aspect of life -production and distribution of food, opening and closing of shops, prices, transport. They publish their own newspaper and uniquely issue their own currency. Their initial success is built on a local alliance of Socialist, Republican and trade union forces, with the tacit support of Catholic clergy. However, when the workers seek a general strike, the national leaderships of these disparate groups are opposed and abandon them. The outcome is an honourable draw but the militant spirit of Limerick's women and men inspires more than a hundred other soviets across Ireland in the revolutionary years 1919 to 1923.

Mother Father Revolution
Mother Father Revolution follows a Scottish nurse and Australian mining engineer, who fell in love in Iran as expats in the 1970s, and were forced to flee in the final days of the 1979 Revolution. With their passports held by local employers, and facing regular bomb threats, shootings and state surveillance, they devised an incredible escape plan that involved coffins and a funeral journey for cover through central Iranian towns that were on the brink of civil war, only to find two tickets on one of the last commercial flights out of Tehran, as revolutionaries seized the international airport and the nation descended into chaos. Together with the events of their early life that led them to Iran, the book provides a concise but comprehensive history of Iran through the 20th Century, allowing readers to understand the chain of events that led up to the Revolution. The biographical and historical events sewn together provide readers with a chance to view the 1979 Iranian Revolution through the lives of two individuals making life and death choices, and gives context to a nation that has slipped behind a curtain in world affairs, and has rarely been seen since. Mother Father Revolution will appeal to readers with an interest in Middle Eastern history, and those who enjoy a heartfelt family story based on true events.

Marxists in the Face of Fascism: Writings by Marxists on Fascism From the Inter-war Period
Fascism's ascent to power across Europe in the 1920s and 1930s marks one of the greatest historical defeats of the left in all of history. Yet, this catastrophic de- feat was resisted at every turn by Marxists who tried, unsuccessfully, to push the mass communist and social democratic parties to organize an opposition to the rising movements of violent reaction. Their devastating failure paved the way for the gas chamber, decades of ruthless dictatorship, and war. This important volume offers the most complete selection of Marxist writings on fascism from this period in any language and provides invaluable lessons for contemporary readers concerned with today's far-right.

Red Round Globe Hot Burning: A Tale at the Crossroads of Commons and Closure, of Love and Terror, of Race and Class, and of Kate and Ned Despard
On February 21, 1803, Colonel Edward (Ned) Marcus Despard was publicly hanged and decapitated in London before a crowd of 20,000 for organizing a revolutionary conspiracy to overthrow King George III. His black Caribbean wife, Catherine (Kate), helped to write his gallows speech in which he proclaimed that he was a friend to the poor and oppressed. He expressed trust that the principles of freedom, of humanity, and of justice will triumph over falsehood, tyranny, and delusion. And yet the world turned. From the connected events of the American, French, Haitian, and failed Irish Revolutions, to the Anthropocene's birth amidst enclosures, war-making global capitalism, slave labor plantations, and factory machine production, Red Round Globe Hot Burning throws readers into the pivotal moment of the last two millennia. This monumental history, packed with a wealth of detail, presents a comprehensive chronicle of the resistance to the demise of communal regimes. Peter Linebaugh's extraordinary narrative recovers the death-defying heroism of extended networks of underground resisters fighting against privatization of the commons accomplished by two new political entities, the U.S.A. and the U.K., that we now know would dispossess people around the world through today. Red Round Globe Hot Burning is the culmination of a lifetime of research-encapsulated through an epic tale of love.
