Heart: A History
The heart lies at the centre of every facet of our existence. It's so bound up with our deepest feelings that emotional trauma causes it to change shape. Practising cardiologist Sandeep Jauhar beautifully weaves his own experiences with the defining discoveries of the past to tell the story of our most vital organ. He looks at some of the pioneers who risked their careers and their patients' lives to better understand the heart. People like Daniel Hale Williams, who performed the world's first documented heart surgery, and Wilson Greatbatch, who accidentally invented the pacemaker. Amid gripping scenes from the operating theatre, Jauhar interweaves stories about the patients he's treated with the moving tale of his family's own history of heart problems, from his grandfather's sudden death in India - an event that sparked his life-long obsession - to the ominous signs of how he himself might die. He also confronts the limits of medical technology and argues that future progress will be determined more by how we choose to live rather than by any device we invent.

Will I Still Be Me?: Finding a Continuing Sense of Self in the Lived Experience of Dementia
What does a dementia diagnosis mean for an individual's sense of self? Christine Bryden shares her insider view on living with dementia and explains how a continuing sense of self is possible after diagnosis and as the condition develops. Encouraging a deeper understanding of how individuals live meaningfully with dementia, the book challenges the dominant story of people with dementia 'fading away' to eventually become an 'empty shell'. It explores what it means to be an embodied self with feelings and emotions, how individuals can relate to others despite cognitive changes and challenges to communications, and what this means for the inclusion of people with dementia in society.

The HPV Vaccine On Trial: Weighing the Evidence
In 2006, following an expedited review, the Food and Drug Administration approved Merck & Co.'s Gardasil vaccine, a preventive vaccine targeting a limited range of strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), including two strains that are linked to the possible development of cervical cancers. In 2009, the FDA, in another fast track review, approved Cervarix, a similar vaccine by another pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline. In The HPV Vaccine, Mary Holland and Kim Mack Rosenberg, expert researchers on the making, marketing, and safety of vaccines, assess the quick popularity of the HPV vaccine. They reveal the business behind the pharmaceutical and medical industries' push for it and how this effects the population it's most targeted toward, girls and women ages eleven to twenty-six. The insightful text is geared toward providing parents and young adults with the information they need to know to decide whether to give their children the vaccine or get it themselves. It's also for women's health organizations, health professionals, and members of the medical industry, who need to know what the effects of the vaccine on patients will be and the disturbing reasons that the pharmaceutical companies and the FDA released it despite disconcerting results.

Patient H69: The Story of My Second Sight
Imagine how it would feel to one day wake up and find your vision descending swiftly into darkness. Your fingertips are turning numb, and, as the world closes in around you, you realise there is nothing you can do to stop it. This is what happened to Vanessa Potter. In the space of 72 hours, Vanessa went from juggling a high-flying career as a producer and caring for her two small children to being completely blind, unable to walk, and with her sense of touch completely gone. Over the course of the next six months, Vanessa slowly began to recover. Opening her eyes onto a black-and-white world with mutating shapes and colours that crackled and fizzled, she encountered a visual landscape that was completely unrecognisable. As colour reappeared, Vanessa experienced a range of bizarre phenomena as her confused brain tried to make sense of the world around her, and she found herself touching and talking to inanimate objects in order to stimulate her vision - all part of her brain's mechanism for coping with the trauma of sensory loss. Going blind led Vanessa to turn science sleuth, reinventing herself as Patient H69 to uncover the reality behind her unique condition. With the help of a team of psychologists and neuroscientists, we follow her story as she learns the science of herself, making discoveries that will positively change the course of her life. Vanessa's account is raw and candid, but ultimately upbeat. It shows how this remarkable woman opened doors by transforming her terrifying experience into an inspirational and scientifically fascinating endeavour.

Saving Sarah
Sarah had been dying of cystic fibrosis since the day she was born. The disease quickly ravaged her lungs and little body bit-by-bit. Fragile and frail, she had only weeks to live, when her mum realised the reality of Sarah's situation: transplant laws, restricting access to lungs based on arbitrary age restrictions, meant Sarah's options were limited. The injustice of her daughter's fate spurred Janet to start a public battle against outdated health care regulations and a battle to save Sarah's life. Janet transformed her pain and desperation into a voice for Sarah and other kids using social media as her megaphone with friends and family as Sarah's warriors. How does a family navigate catastrophic illness and life in a hospital, while still maintaining a sense of normalcy? Saving Sarah is a story of hope and courage, and a mother's determination to never give up. It's also the story of how a family - Janet and her husband Fran have three other children, one adopted from Ghana - reacts and adjusts when one of its members is in ongoing crisis.

In this moving, behind-the-scenes memoir, Yolanda opens up in a way she has never been able to in the media. Hers is an emotional narrative, and an all-important read for anyone unseated by an unexpected catastrophe. In those moments, we all have to find the courage to go on. With candor, authenticity and an unwavering inner strength, Yolanda shares intimate details of her journey to uncover the source of her many symptoms, as well has how her children, two of whom also suffer from Lyme, have been her shining light in her darkest moments.

Living with Buildings: And Walking with Ghosts - On Health and Architecture
'A remarkable book; surprisingly gripping and often very moving ... stories weave and unweave over the book's course, patterning thought into a complex built environment, at once disorientating and illuminating.' Robert Macfarlane We shape ourselves, and are shaped in return, by the walls that contain us. Buildings affect how we sleep, work, socialise and even breathe. They can isolate and endanger us but they can also heal us. We project our hopes and fears onto buildings, while they absorb our histories. In Living With Buildings, Iain Sinclair embarks on a series of expeditions - through London, Marseille, Mexico and the Outer Hebrides. He explores the relationship between sickness and structure, and between art, architecture, social planning and health, taking plenty of detours along the way. Walking is Sinclair's defensive magic against illness and, as he moves, he observes his surroundings: stacked tower blocks and behemoth estates; halogen-lit glasshouse offices and humming hospitals; the blackened hull of a Spitalfields church and the floating mass of Le Corbusier's radiant city. And he peels back layers of life. A father and his daughter, who has a rare syndrome, visit the estate where they once lived. Developers clink champagne glasses as residents are 'decanted' from their homes. A box sculpted from whalebone, thought to contain healing properties, is returned to its origins with unexpected consequences. Part investigation, part travelogue, Living With Buildings brings the spaces we inhabit to life as never before.

Chris Beat Cancer: A Comprehensive Plan for Healing Naturally
Two days before Christmas and at just 26 years old, Chris Wark found himself diagnosed with stage III colon cancer. Before he knew it, he was wheeled into surgery, where a golf ball-sized tumor and a third of his colon were removed. Doctors told Wark that as soon as he recovered from surgery, he would need 9 to 12 months of chemotherapy in order to prevent a recurrence. But when the first meal he was served in the hospital was a cafeteria-style sloppy joe, he had the first hint that maybe, just maybe, taking into account his diet and nurturing his own health might be the way to heal his body more effectively, even if it went against the advice of the traditional medical establishment and his family and friends. Millions of readers have followed Wark's journey on his blog, Chris Beat Cancer, and in his debut work he dives deep into the reasoning and scientific foundation behind his approach and the strategies that he used to successfully heal his body from cancer. Wark exposes the corruption and ineffectiveness found in the medical and cancer industries while exploring a variety of perspectives and areas of well-being in order to shape his integrative approach. Drawing from the most up-to-date and rigorous research as well as his deep faith, he shares his healing strategies, including his Beat Cancer Mindset; radical diet and lifestyle changes; and means for mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. Packed with both intense personal insight and extensive healing solutions, Chris Beat Cancer will inspire and guide you on your own journey toward wellness. I am not lucky or special. I am just a regular guy who listened to his instincts, stepped out in faith, and took massive action to help his body heal. I eliminated everything in my life that may have contributed to my disease, and changed the internal terrain of my body - making it a place where cancer could not thrive. What I did, I believe anyone can do, including you.

A Season in Hell: A Memoir
An extraordinary memoir on facing death . . . and choosing life Where there's a will . . . Given a death sentence after being diagnosed with cancer, Marilyn French fought back . . . and won. A Season in Hell is the story of her battle to survive against overwhelming odds. A smoker for almost half a century, French was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the summer of 1992. She was given a year to live, but five years later, she was, incredibly, cancer free. In this inspiring account, French chronicles her journey, from her reaction to the devastating news, to the chemotherapy that almost killed her, to her miraculous return to life following a two-week coma. She shares her feelings on apathetic doctors, the vital importance of a support network of friends and family, and how her near-death experience forever altered her perspective and priorities.

Winner, 2018 Donald W. Light Award for Applied Medical Sociology, American Sociological Association Medical Sociology Section Winner, 2018 Distinguished Scholarship Award presented by the Pacific Sociology Association Honorable Mention, 2017 ESS Mirra Komarovsky Book Award presented by the Eastern Sociological Society Outstanding Book Award for the Section on Altruism, Morality, and Social Solidarity presented by the American Sociological Association A rich, multi-faceted examination into the attitudes and beliefs of parents who choose not to immunize their children The measles outbreak at Disneyland in December 2014 spread to a half-dozen U.S. states and sickened 147 people. It is just one recent incident that the medical community blames on the nation's falling vaccination rates. Still, many parents continue to claim that the risks that vaccines pose to their children are far greater than their benefits. Given the research and the unanimity of opinion within the medical community, many ask how such parents-who are most likely to be white, college educated, and with a family income over $75,000-could hold such beliefs. For over a decade, Jennifer Reich has been studying the phenomenon of vaccine refusal from the perspectives of parents who distrust vaccines and the corporations that make them, as well as the health care providers and policy makers who see them as essential to ensuring community health. Reich reveals how parents who opt out of vaccinations see their decision: what they fear, what they hope to control, and what they believe is in their child's best interest. Based on interviews with parents who fully reject vaccines as well as those who believe in slow vax, or altering the number of and time between vaccinations, the author provides a fascinating account of these parents' points of view. Placing these stories in dialogue with those of pediatricians who see the devastation that can be caused by vaccine-preventable diseases and the policy makers who aim to create healthy communities, Calling the Shots offers a unique opportunity to understand the points of disagreement on what is best for children, communities, and public health, and the ways in which we can bridge these differences.

The final section highlights controversies in reproductive medicine, including the use of preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) and blastocyst transfer, as well as the ethics surrounding a maximum BMI for IVF. Providing an ongoing appraisal of current knowledge, and featuring contributions from leading experts in the field, Emerging Topics in Reproduction, Volume 5 is a worthy addition to the series and an ideal resource on the latest topics for reproductive medicine and REI specialists, OB-GYNS, andrologists, and any clinician working with infertility.

Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD): From Biological Basis to Clinical Significance
This book addresses the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD), a new medical concept that demonstrates that various adult diseases start in the fetal period. It discusses our current understanding of the molecular mechanisms of DOHaD, including gene body epigenetics and non-coding RNA, and comprehensively examines diseases such type 2 diabetes, a well known as standard DOHaD-associated disease, as well as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hypertension and neurodevelopmental disorders. It argues that most adult diseases start at a very early stage, such as in the fetal and neonatal periods, and that earlier prevention and intervention would result in better outcomes for adult diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiac disorders, which are increasing in both developed and developing countries. The book appeals to obstetricians and pediatricians, as well as physicians who treat adult patients, wanting to understand the origins of diseases.

A Girl Behind Dark Glasses
From a darkened world, bound by four walls, a young woman called Jessica tells the tale of her battle against the M.E Monster. The severest form of a neuro immune disease called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis went to war with her at just 15 years old. From beneath her dark glasses, Jessica glimpses a world far different from the one she remembers as a teenage school girl. This true story follows her path as she ends up living in hospital for years with tubes keeping her alive. This harrowing story follows the highs and lows of the disease and being hospitalised, captured through her voice activated technology diary called `Bug' that enables her to fulfil her dream of one day becoming an author. It provides a raw, real-time honesty to the story that would be impossible to capture in hindsight.

Brilliantly captures Annie's determination to live - Victoria Derbyshire In her mid-twenties, balancing a stable job and a partying lifestyle, Annie was also on the hunt for a man. Congenital Mullerian Anomalies: Diagnosis and Management

Rx for Hope: An Integrative Approach to Cancer Care
In our current era of rapidly developing cancer drugs and therapies, we also see improvement of cancer treatment outcomes stagnating when it comes to determining quality of life or long-term survival. This is because while new treatments are making small incremental progress in outcomes, most cancer patients still depend on conventional methods that are both toxic and ineffective. While new cancer drugs are becoming more precise or targeted, less attention is being paid to the overall health and wellbeing of the patient, which we propose is essential for long-term cancer control and improving a patient's quality of life. Rx for Hope, backed by rigorous science and real-life patient cases, calls for an urgent reevaluation of the current conventional approach to cancer treatments and encourages a progressive treatment model combining metronomic low-dose chemotherapy with complementary integrative medicine. Along with new, breakthrough immunotherapy drugs, these treatments can potentially create a response powerful enough to not only eradicate the presence of cancer but also to prevent it from returning. Because every 23 seconds someone in America is diagnosed with cancer, the number of people affected is growing rapidly. The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly two million new patients will need treatment in the coming year. Judging by current trends and methods of treatment, far too many of these people will be treated without the benefits of low-dose chemotherapy, and even less will enjoy the positive impact of immune-supportive complementary integrative medicine. Rx for Hope offers insight into a powerful way of treating cancer that patients and doctors can implement immediately for optimal results.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo: A rather unusual memoir
Cancer is not a laughing matter, as I was told by a cross German lady from Dortmund when I showed her this journal. She had herself had breast cancer and is right of course; there are lots of things that are not fun about cancer, most of them unavoidable. I was therefore as surprised as the next person to realise that a huge amount of funny things happen on the way to chemo, or indeed on the way to most places, and that once you get your eye in, you completely forget to be scared... This is the very opposite of a misery memoir and is certainly safe to give to cancer patients as a cheerful present. More importantly, it sheds new light on: Why Kim Kardashian is worth Keeping Up With; What playlists to make for MRI scans; The truth behind the legend of Medea; Bikini etiquette on a deserted beach; What to do with a glut of rainbow chard; What an Oscar-winner should say in an acceptance speech; How to deal with cold-callers selling life insurance; And what to wear on a March Against Menopause (layers, obviously)...
