Tuesdays With Morrie: An old man, a young man, and life's greatest lesson
Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying of ALS - or motor neurone disease - MItch visited Morrie in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final 'class': lessons in how to live. TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world.

Virusphere: From common colds to Ebola epidemics - why we need the viruses that plague us
In 1993 a previously healthy young man was drowning in the middle of a desert, in fluids produced by his own lungs. This was the beginning of the terrifying Sin Nombre hantavirus epidemic and the start of a scientific journey that would forever change our understanding of what it means to be human. After witnessing the Sin Nombre outbreak, Dr Frank Ryan began researching viral evolution and was astonished to discover that it's inextricable from the evolution of all life on Earth. From AIDS and Ebola to the common cold, Ryan explores the role of the virus within every ecosystem on the planet. His gripping conclusions shed new light on the natural world, proving that what doesn't kill you really does make you (and your species) stronger.

Alzheimer's Disease and Infectious Causes: The Theory and Evidence
With the recent discovery that amyloid beta protein, the cause of plaques in Alzheimer's disease, is an antimicrobial peptide produced in response to infection, many researchers are focusing on the role infection plays in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Brain studies have also identified a number of different viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa in the postmortem brain specimens of Alzheimer's patients. Infection (particularly chronic, latent and persistent infections) causes an immune response that leads to inflammation and brain cell degeneration, which are characteristic features of Alzheimer's disease. Sources of infection in Alzheimer's disease vary from childhood infections to gut microbes that find their way into the brain as a result of aging, leaky gut syndrome, and increased permeability of the blood brain barrier. Studies and ongoing clinical trials show that treatment of viral and bacterial infections, as well as restoring a healthy balance to the gut microbiome, can reduce disease risk and improve symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This book serves as an introduction to the human microbiome and the role that infection plays in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

The Tango Effect: Parkinson's and the healing power of dance
Every hour in the UK, two people are told they have Parkinson's disease. For Kate Swindlehurst, the diagnosis was a turning point: refusing to be defined by her condition, she chose instead a radically different path. This is the story of an extraordinary year. It begins with a single tango lesson but grows into an exploration of the dance itself, its history, its music and its incredible healing potential. It is a year in which Kate explored and documented 'the tango effect' - the emotional and social benefits of dance on Parkinson's symptoms. Her personal account echoes what science is beginning to tell us about the powerful and transformative impact of Argentine tango. Intimate and unflinching, The Tango Effect challenges our perceptions of living with a chronic condition. Above all, it takes an honest look at the dark side of the illness while celebrating moments of joy, interconnectedness, acceptance and liberation.

Zen Medicine for Mind and Body: Using Zen Wisdom, Shaolin Kung Fu and Traditional Chinese Medicine
A truly remarkable story of Zen medicine and how you can bring its practices into your own life. Author Shi Zxinggui began studying Zen medicine-a combination of meditation, gentle physical activity and medicine-as a child under the tutelage of the Shaolin Temple's Master Dechan. She carried it with her, eventually going on to lecture on the subject in both China and abroad for several decades. When she was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer, Zxinggui returned to the Shaolin Temple, hoping the Zen medicine she'd spent so long teaching others about would help her. After careful nursing and appropriate mind and body exercises, her cancer went into remission. Since her own cancer battle, Zxinggui has helped many other cancer patients, devoting her life to this work. This book, which draws on the author's 20 years as a cancer fighter, 50 years as a doctor and life-long wisdom as a Zen practitioner, provides insight into how readers can implement these strategies, which emphasize daily health care and cultivation of the body and soul, into their own lives-not only to help with physical diseases, but also to ease mental anxieties and inspire others to live a clean, healthy life. Ailments addressed in the book are varied, and include: IBS Lumbar disc herniation Back and leg soreness High blood pressure Asthma And many others

Timely Psychosocial Interventions in Dementia Care: Evidence-Based Practice
This new edited volume seeks to meet the growing need for ways to support people with dementia across the whole course and trajectory of dementia care, with a wide scope of expertise. The book addresses how practitioners and carers can apply psychosocial interventions - which take into consideration the individual, social and environmental aspects of a person's life - across this trajectory, right from the earliest stages through to practice in care home settings. Divided into four sections, each covers a different context in which people with dementia can be supported: at home; in community settings; family and carer support; and those in care homes and hospitals. In addition, there is a distinct focus throughout on evidence-based practice and its implementation in real-world settings. This book is essential reading for any practitioner and caregiver wanting to support people with dementia.

Fast Carbs, Slow Carbs: The Simple Truth about Food, Weight, and Disease
In this urgent sequel to his New York Times bestseller The End of Overeating-a call to arms that will change the way we eat-Dr. David A. Kessler explains why Americans suffer in unprecedented numbers from obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other debilitating illnesses, and offers concrete solutions for reducing cardiovascular problems, keeping weight off, and curtailing chronic disease. The American body is in trouble. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States today, and millions are plagued by conditions like obesity and diabetes. But we have the answer to improving health and longevity: 1) cut out fast carbs (processed foods); 2) reduce saturated fats; 3) exercise regularly. Though the solution is simple, the difficulty lies in the food we eat. Multi-billion-dollar processing plants and food manufacturers dot the heartland and work to increase the profits of the industrialized farming business-Big Agriculture-that produces excess corn and wheat. Today, we are being fed highly palatable, ultra-processed carbohydrates as food products-fast carbs-that are often marketed as healthy. Fast carbs are primarily starches and sugars produced during food processing and are present in much of what we eat. By destroying the healthy structure of whole food and increasing the amount of rapidly digestible starch it contains, these products bypass our body's metabolic pathways. When combined with the ill-effects of saturated fats, we are putting ourselves on a collision course with weight gain, insulin resistance, digestive issues, heart disease, and more. The problem is, most of us don't know where these fast carbs and saturated fats lurk in our daily diets. Accessible and eye-opening, Fast Carbs, Slow Carbs provides the information we need to understand exactly what we are eating-and to learn the truth about what it being sold to us as healthy food. Rising above the confusing range of specific popular diets-Keto, Paleo, Mediterranean, Vegan, Vegetarian-Dr. Kessler gives us an achievable baseline that can set us on the path to better health.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER A grand tour of the human immune system and the secrets of health, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist One of those rare nonfiction books that transcends the genre. ... Extraordinary. -Douglas Preston A terminal cancer patient rises from the grave. A medical marvel defies HIV. Two women with autoimmunity discover their own bodies have turned against them. Matt Richtel's An Elegant Defense uniquely entwines these intimate stories with science's centuries-long quest to unlock the mysteries of sickness and health, and illuminates the immune system as never before. The immune system is our body's essential defense network, a guardian vigilantly fighting illness, healing wounds, maintaining order and balance, and keeping us alive. Its legion of microscopic foot soldiers-from T cells to natural killers -patrols our body, linked by a nearly instantaneous communications grid. It has been honed by evolution over millennia to face an almost infinite array of threats. For all its astonishing complexity, however, the immune system can be easily compromised by fatigue, stress, toxins, advanced age, and poor nutrition-hallmarks of modern life-and even by excessive hygiene. Paradoxically, it is a fragile wonder weapon that can turn on our own bodies with startling results, leading today to epidemic levels of autoimmune disorders. Richtel effortlessly guides readers on a scientific detective tale winding from the Black Plague to twentieth-century breakthroughs in vaccination and antibiotics, to the cutting-edge laboratories that are revolutionizing immunology-perhaps the most extraordinary and consequential medical story of our time. The foundation that Richtel builds makes accessible revelations about cancer immunotherapy, the microbiome, and autoimmune treatments that are changing millions of lives. An Elegant Defense also captures in vivid detail how these powerful therapies, along with our behavior and environment, interact with the immune system, often for the good but always on a razor's edge that can throw this remarkable system out of balance. Drawing on his groundbreaking reporting for the New York Times and based on extensive new interviews with dozens of world-renowned scientists, Matt Richtel has produced a landmark book, equally an investigation into the deepest riddles of survival and a profoundly human tale that is movingly brought to life through the eyes of his four main characters, each of whom illuminates an essential facet of our elegant defense.

It's microbiome-friendly meals with a Southern spin in this follow-up cookbook to the life-enhancing My Kitchen Cure so you can heal your gut and fight inflammation while enjoying 100+ delicious whole foods recipes with a farm house spin. In the follow-up to her successful My Kitchen Cure cookbook, real food cooking expert Mee McCormick brings a Southern twist to comfort food classics with more than 100 recipes that heal your gut, reduce inflammation, and reverse chronic autoimmune diseases. Best of all? Mee offers a completely customizable approach with inclusive options to mix and match every recipe for different dietary needs, whether you're gluten-free, Paleo, keto, or vegan. From quick and hearty breakfast bowls and immune-boosting smoothies to gut-friendly soups, salads, dinners and desserts, this four-color cookbook will become your go-to kitchen resource, freeing you from the boredom of bland-tasting health food and the nightly conundrum of: What's for dinner? Just some of the recipes include: apple oatmeal breakfast cakes, breakfast tacos, farmhouse huevos rancheros, creamy cauliflower soup, carrot ginger turmeric soup, chicken piccata, farmhouse beef stroganoff, slow-cooker pork chops with baked apples, turkey burgers with blueberry ketchup, BBQ beef-stuffed sweet potato with crispy kale, candy roaster pumpkin pie, mixed berry cobbler, skillet apple pie, and chocolate coconut milk ice cream. Mee first started cooking as a last resort when hereditary Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and Hashimoto's delivered debilitating daily pain that knocked her down. When it seemed like she only had two options-a slow and painful death or a sudden and quick death-Mee looked at her husband and two small children and decided to find a third option. She found it in a surprising place: her kitchen. Through relentless recipe testing, she put her condition into remission and completely restored her health with whole foods, most of which she grew and harvested from her family's farm outside of Nashville, Tennessee. Once Mee was well, she opened a farm-to-table restaurant on her working farm and cattle ranch, inspiring her rural community to participate in their own wellness by choosing to eat local and seasonally grown foods. Her southern community told her what they wanted and she found a way to give it to them with healthier ingredients that supported their wellness. Pinewood Kitchen is unique in that every meal is created with the intention to serve everyone with the same deliciousness regardless of dietary restrictions. Mee creates the menu every week with something for everyone and always with the goal of supporting optimal health. You'll also discover: * The importance of intestinal health and how to improve your own gut microbiome * Which foods are nutritional powerhouses and which you must avoid * How to eat real food every day without breaking the bank Mee is living proof that you can change your fate by what's on your plate-her recipes will help you prepare delicious food that brings you and your family together around the table-and brings you optimal health at the same time.

The Candida Cure: The 90-Day Program to Balance Your Gut, Beat Candida, and Restore Vibrant Health
Foreword by David Perlmutter, MD, author of Grain Brain The cult-classic health book, now revised and updated with a quick start cleanse, easy recipes, and more. It's not news that Americans are sicker than ever. Seventy million of us suffer from digestive problems like acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or gastro esophageal reflex disorder (GERD). Another forty million have been diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression and a staggering fifty million Americans live with an autoimmune disease. But what is newsworthy is that all of these conditions share a common thread you've probably never heard of: candida. Candida is the term for a group of yeast organisms that have lived in our digestive tract for millennia, in harmony with the other thousands of bacteria, viruses, and archaea that make up our microbiome. But due to poor diets, processed foods, overuse of antibiotics, environmental toxins, and increased stress, our microbiome has been under steady and constant attack for decades. Yeast are of a heartier stock than bacterial microbes, and as bacteria die off, yeast begins to overgrow in the digestive tract, a condition known as candidiasis. Mild and moderate cases of candidiasis present with fatigue, IBS, eczema, depression, brain fog, migraines, and weight gain. Severe cases allow the afflicted to develop autoimmune disease (such as Multiple Sclerosis), cancer, and Alzheimer's. Ann Boroch's self-published book, The Candida Cure, has been the #1 resource in candida treatment since 2008. Her program-which she used to heal herself from a life-threatening autoimmune disorder-has stood the test of time, and has become a life-changing resource for more than 65,000 people. Now, in this revised edition, readers have even more tools, with updated information and case histories, a quick start cleanse, and all-new recipes and eating plans.

Heart Solution for Women: A Proven Program to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease
Heart disease remains the number one killer of women, outpacing breast cancer, diabetes, and stroke, with one in four women receiving a diagnosis in her lifetime. And the problem is only getting worse. Dr. Mark Menolascino has been on the front lines of cardiac research for most of his life, running a highly successful clinic where he takes a holistic, personalized approach to reversing disease and jump-starting health. Most of his patients are women struggling with symptoms and illnesses that stem from the most important, life-giving organ in the body: the heart. In Heart Solution for Women, Dr. Menolascino explores the many ways our hearts are the pathway to overall health. While the classic risk factors for heart disease-obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stress, and poor diet-are critical components, symptoms of the disease manifest differently in women's bodies and can go misdiagnosed for years. They include depression, anxiety and panic attacks, poor sleep, and widespread pain, and can be masked during pregnancy, post-pregnancy, and menopause only to appear with great force later in life. Featuring the latest research on gut, brain, and hormone health and including answers to the most common heart-health misunderstandings, Heart Solution for Women finally gives women the tools to succeed, feel great in their bodies, and add years to their lives.

The No 1 Bestseller 'Compelling ... colourful, thoughtful' Sunday Independent 'Tubridy's compassionate, no-nonsense approach makes him a comforting guide through the landscape of neurological medicine' Irish Times 'Fascinating ... teems with interesting characters' Sunday Business Post '[Oliver] Sacks hoped that his neurological tales ... could bring us closer to where the psychic and the physical meet ... Tubridy's concerns are less rarefied. He wants us to understand the human toll that illness takes' Sunday Times 'It's a most readable book. There's no jargon in it' Sean O'Rourke, RTE As a medical student Niall Tubridy fell in love with neurology. Figuring out how the brain and nervous system signal problems was a form of high stakes detective work and answers could be life-changing. Just One More Question is the story of Niall Tubridy's career in neurology. He shares the stories of encounters that are, by turn, poignant, dramatic and funny, such as ... The chef who goes for his usual morning walk, and loses his memory for the next six hours The painter who believes her left hand is her guardian angel The eager young lover whose head 'explodes' every time he orgasms Using simple and illuminating language Tubridy also explains well-known conditions like multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease and Parkinson's and and brings us into the examining room as he accompanies patients with these diagnoses on their challenging path. In addition, he reflects candidly on the reasons he, a doctor's son, went into medicine, how he has been tested, and what he has learned about people - and about himself - along the way. Revealing, gripping and moving, Just One More Question will make you think in a new way about the human brain - and about what it's like to be a doctor. '[My brother] has written a book which has to be one of the most extraordinary books written in Irish medical history! I would say that, wouldn't I? But it is great. Good Sugar, Bad Sugar: How to Power Your Body and Brain with Healthy Energy
A guide to replacing bad sugars in your diet with good sugars for physical, emotional, and mental healing and more energy One of the most valuable nutritive substances we can consume, sugar supplies the essential energy the body and brain need to function. But there are good and bad, healthful and harmful forms of sugar. Good sugars are those found naturally occurring in foods such as fruits, honey, maple syrup, and whole grains. These unrefined sugars not only provide energy but also trace elements, minerals, and vitamins--nutrients crucial to helping the body process sugar. Bad sugars are those that are man-made or refined, such as white sugar, white flour, and artificial sweeteners. Pervasive in the modern diet, bad sugars are difficult for the body to metabolize and lead to a host of health issues, including tooth decay, type 2 diabetes, brain fog, mood swings, and weight gain. In this practical guide, Christopher Vasey, N.D., explains how to successfully replace bad sugars with good sugars as well as how to reduce sugar cravings and break your sugar addiction. He reveals how refined sugars not only cause well-known, sugar-related health issues such as obesity but also lead to acid-alkaline imbalances, hyperactivity of glands and organs, chronic fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, thickened blood, and mental disorders such as fits of rage, phobias, depression, and confused states akin to dementia--conditions uncommon before white sugar was introduced into the world's food supply more than 200 years ago. Vasey describes how sugar, in the form of glucose, works in the body and explores the difference between fast sugars and slow sugars, emphasizing the importance of slow sugars for ensuring a constant energy level all day long. He looks at the glycemic index with regard to good and bad, fast and slow sugars and the regulating role of proteins to slow down the body's use of sugar. He explains how dehydration and imbalance in the body's pH level can trigger bad-sugar dependency and provides steps to correct both issues. Offering a path out of sugar addiction and easy steps to power your brain and body with healthy energy, Vasey gives you with the tools to take ownership of your own health.
