Food Allergies: A Complete Guide for Eating When Your Life Depends on It
Posing the urgent questions that anyone with food allergies will think to ask-and then some-Food Allergies provides practical, sensitive, and scientific guidance on the topics that affect your life. Allergy expert Scott H. Sicherer addresses the full spectrum of food allergies, from mild to life threatening and from single foods to food families, clearing up misconceptions along the way. He explores how exposure to foods can bring about an allergic response, describes the symptoms of food allergy, and illuminates how food allergies develop. Organized in an accessible Q&A format and illustrated with case studies, the book thoroughly explains how to prevent exposure to a known allergen at home, at school, in restaurants, and elsewhere. Dr. Sicherer also gives valuable advice about what to do if exposure occurs, including how to handle an anaphylactic emergency. Finally, he describes tests for diagnosing food allergies and chronic health problems caused by food allergies, such as eczema, hives, and respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. In this thoroughly updated new edition, Dr. Sicherer* describes new approaches to prevent food allergies* presents cutting-edge theories on risk factors for developing food allergies* describes innovative allergy tests to improve diagnosis* explains how to administer emergency medications for severe reactions* focuses on new allergens of concern, such as pink peppercorns* analyzes studies suggesting that resolution of an allergy might be predictable* talks about the role of healthy diet * lists additional resources, including allergy-related apps* provides revised school food allergy guidelines* offers insights into food allergy bullying-and advice to reduce it Dr. Sicherer also reviews food reactions that are not allergic (such as lactose intolerance and celiac disease), advises how to get adequate nutrition when you must avoid dietary staples, and discusses whether allergies ever go away (they do-and sometimes they return).

The Secret Life of Your Microbiome: Why Nature and Biodiversity Are Essential to Health and Happiness
For too long our bodies have been viewed as capsules, sealed off and protected from bugs by our immune systems and an arsenal of antibiotics, pesticides, processed foods, and antibacterial soaps. The more insulated from nature, the better. The Secret Life of Your Microbiome shatters this deeply held myth, presenting a revolutionary new paradigm, backed by vast science; we're deeply connected to the biodiversity of nature through our microbiomes--the rich microbial ecosystem of our guts and skin--and this connection is essential to health and happiness. From sugar-rich diets wiping out good gut bacteria and exacerbating depression, to microbes mediating phytonutrient absorption in the brain, to inflammation and cancer, the influence of biodiversity on our bodies is everywhere. The great communicator is our immune system, a mobile brain that interacts with micro-organisms in and around us with profound health consequences. Written with pace, clarity, and humor by world-renowned scientists in immunology, nutrition, and environmental health, The Secret Life of Your Microbiome makes the irrefutable case that health and happiness depends fundamentally on the health of biodiversity, and shows how we can nurture this nature. Dr. Susan L. Prescott, MD, PhD is an internationally acclaimed immunologist and pediatrician. She has authored 250 scientific papers and The Allergy Epidemic, The Calling, and Origins. Dr. Alan C. Logan ND is a naturopathic doctor and researcher, a trusted media commentator, and co-author of Your Brain on Nature and The Clear Skin Diet. He and Prescott live in New York and Perth, Australia.

The Peanut Allergy Epidemic, Third Edition: What's Causing It and How to Stop It
Essential reading for every parent of a child with peanut allergies--third edition with a foreword by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Why is the peanut allergy an epidemic that only seems to be found in western cultures? More than four million people in the United States alone are affected by peanut allergies, while there are few reported cases in India, a country where peanut is the primary ingredient in many baby food products. Where did this allergy come from, and does medicine play any kind of role in the phenomenon? After her own child had an anaphylactic reaction to peanut butter, historian Heather Fraser decided to discover the answers to these questions.

In The Peanut Allergy Epidemic, Fraser delves into the history of this allergy, trying to understand why it largely develops in children and studying its relationship with social, medical, political, and economic factors. In an international overview of the subject, she compares the epidemic in the United States to sixteen other geographical locations; she finds that in addition to the United States in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Sweden, there is a one in fifty chance that a child, especially a male, will develop a peanut allergy. Fraser also highlights alternative medicines and explores issues of vaccine safety and other food allergies.

This third edition features a foreword from Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and a new chapter on promising leads for cures to peanut allergies. The Peanut Allergy Epidemic is a must read for every parent, teacher, and health professional.

Allergy-Free Kids: The Science-Based Approach to Preventing Food Allergies
Based on recent groundbreaking studies that will change the way parents feed their children, Allergy-Free Kids is a revolutionary guide to preventing food allergies. When her infant daughter was diagnosed with life-threatening food allergies, Robin Nixon Pompa found Dr. Gideon Lack, a clinical researcher on the verge of a breakthrough in allergy prevention and treatment that would heal her daughter and, later, her sons. The secret: building acceptance of allergens through repeated careful feedings. Instead of avoiding eggs, nuts, and other allergens, as previous recommendations held, most parents should introduce them into their children's diets, early, carefully and often, for at least the first five years of life. This life-changing approach is being embraced by the medical community, especially for peanut allergy, and is reflected in new guidelines from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the National Institutes of Health and other major medical associations. Allergy-Free Kids includes a concise, easy-to-understand overview of the research as well as seventy simple and delicious kid-friendly recipes to help parents integrate unfamiliar allergen foods into a child's diet. Divided by allergen, Allergy-Free Kids contains sections on Eggs, Peanuts and Tree Nuts, Cow's Milk, Sesame, Wheat and Fish. It also discusses other foods, such as kiwi and soy, which are increasingly causing allergic reactions. The book includes feeding advice, and maintenance doses, followed by recipes suitable for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, including Open Sesame Sweet Potatoes, Nut Flour Crackers, Cocoa Puffs and Eggs-Pretending-to-be-Muffins. Following the new medical guidelines, Allergy-Free Kids empowers parents to help their kids avoid a lifelong struggle with food allergies-and bring variety and joy back to family meals.

Another Person's Poison: A History of Food Allergy
To some, food allergies seem like fabricated cries for attention. To others, they pose a dangerous health threat. Food allergies are bound up with so many personal and ideological concerns that it is difficult to determine what is medical and what is myth. Another Person's Poison parses the political, economic, cultural, and genuine health factors of a phenomenon that dominates our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. For most of the twentieth century, food allergies were considered a fad or junk science. While many physicians and clinicians argued that certain foods could cause a range of chronic problems, from asthma and eczema to migraines and hyperactivity, others believed that allergies were psychosomatic. 'This book traces the trajectory of this debate and its effect on public-health policy and the production, manufacture, and consumption of food. Are rising allergy rates purely the result of effective lobbying and a booming industry built on self-diagnosis and expensive remedies? Or should physicians become more flexible in their approach to food allergies and more careful in their diagnoses? Exploring the issue from scientific, political, economic, social, and patient-centered perspectives, this book is the first to engage fully with the history of a major modern affliction, illuminating society's troubled relationship with food, disease, nature, and the creation of medical knowledge.

The Heart in Rheumatologic, Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases: Pathophysiology, Clinical Aspects and Therapeutic Approaches
The prevalence of autoimmune diseases and rheumatic conditions is constantly increasing. Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 7-10% of the population of the United States, while more than 50,000,000 American adults suffer from some type of arthritis. The Heart in Rheumatic, Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases examines the complex mechanisms relating to cardiac diseases from a pathophysiological and clinical point of view. Autoimmune rheumatic diseases can affect the coronary vessels, myocardium, pericardium, heart valves and the conduction system. The diagnosis of these unique cardiac complications necessitates medical awareness and a high index of suspicion. Increased risk of advanced atherosclerosis plays a pivotal role in the development of cardiac diseases in systemic, rheumatic and autoimmune illnesses. Yet, other complex immune medicated mechanisms may contribute to the pathogenesis. Patients' optimal care requires coordination between the primary caregiver, the rheumatologist, immunologist and cardiologist. Screening for cardiovascular risk factors, recognition of high-risk patients and identification of subclinical cardiac conditions are of great importance. Moreover, regulation of inflammation, as well as abnormal immune responses and the initiation of early treatments should be the focus of patient management. A continuous attempt to identify novel therapeutic targets and change the natural history of the underlying disease and its cardiac manifestations is in progress. The book aims at providing the readers with a state of the art collection of up to date information regarding clinically important topics based on experts' perspectives. This book was a result of an extended coordinated collaboration of one-hundred and fifty-four distinguished scientists from thirty-one countries around the globe.

Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging
Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging is an eleven volume series that discusses in detail all aspects of autophagy machinery in the context of health, cancer, and other pathologies. Autophagy maintains homeostasis during starvation or stress conditions by balancing the synthesis of cellular components and their deregulation by autophagy. This series discusses the characterization of autophagosome-enriched vaccines and its efficacy in cancer immunotherapy. Autophagy serves to maintain healthy cells, tissues, and organs, but also promotes cancer survival and growth of established tumors. Impaired or deregulated autophagy can also contribute to disease pathogenesis. Understanding the importance and necessity of the role of autophagy in health and disease is vital for the studies of cancer, aging, neurodegeneration, immunology, and infectious diseases. Comprehensive and forward-thinking, these books offer a valuable guide to cellular processes while also inciting researchers to explore their potentially important connections.

Diet, Immunity and Inflammation
Although inflammation is one of the body's first responses to infection, overactive immune responses can cause chronic inflammatory diseases. Long-term low-grade inflammation has also been identified as a risk factor for other diseases. Diet, immunity and inflammation provides a comprehensive introduction to immunity and inflammation and the role that diet and nutrition play with regard to this key bodily response. Part one, an introductory section, discusses innate and adaptive immunity, mucosal immunity in a healthy gut and chronic inflammatory diseases and low grade inflammation. Chapters in part two highlight the role of micronutrients, including zinc, selenium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin D, in inflammation and immunity. Part three explores other dietary constituents and includes chapters on intestinal bacteria and probiotics, the impacts of prebiotics on the immune system and inflammation, and antimicrobial, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of food bioactive proteins and peptides. Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging: Volume 9: Human Diseases and Autophagosome offers a valuable guide to both cellular processes while helping researchers explore their potentially important connections. Volume 9 emphasizes the role of autophagy in diseases, such as leukemia, antifungal and antibacterial immunity, and transplantation. This volume also explains, in detail, the molecular mechanism(s) underlying the formation of autophagosomes, including the progression of omegasomes to autophagosomes. This information is important because one of the major functions of autophagy is to degrade and eliminate excessive, old, and harmful materials from the cell. Autophagosomes receive these materials (cellular cargo) and transport them to lysosomes for degradation. Lysosomes contain the digestive enzymes (hydrolases) that breakdown proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, etc. (self-digestion). To further explain this phenomenon, the role of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in the formation of autophagosomes is discussed. ULK1 and Beclin 1 proteins are also important in the initial formation of autophagosomes, and are also discussed. Because much of the early research in this area was carried out using yeast cells, the role of Golgi complex in the autophagosome formation in these cells is explained. This volume also includes an explanation of the role of the autophagy-related gene ATG5 in cancer (e.g., gastrointestinal cancer). Paradoxically, autophagy is a double-edged sword because it eliminates some pathogens, whereas it can be used by some intracellular pathogens to multiply and cause infection. This book is an asset to newcomers, providing a concise overview of the role of autophagy in necrosis and inflammation, while also serving as an excellent reference for more experienced scientists and clinicians.

The Allergy Solution: Unlock the Surprising, Hidden Truth about Why You Are Sick and How to Get Well
An epidemic of allergies is spreading around the world. One billion people suffer from allergic diseases such as asthma, hay fever, eczema and food allergies. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. In this ground-breaking book, award-winning doctor Leo Galland reveals the shocking rise of hidden allergies that lead to weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, depression, joint pain, headaches, ADHD, digestive problems and much more. Astonishing new research shows how each of these is linked to the immune imbalance that is at the root of allergy. A brilliant clinician, Dr Galland has unlocked the power of this breakthrough science to help thousands of patients who have struggled with mysterious symptoms to answer the question: 'Doctor, what's wrong with me?' Here, he is joined by his son, Jonathan Galland JD, a passionate health writer and environmental advocate, in exposing the truth that just as the earth's environment is out of balance, our bodies are out of balance. The modern world, with pollution, unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise and excessive exposure to antibiotics, is fuelling the rise in allergies. The Allergy Solution takes an in-depth look at how we can balance immunity through nutrition and lifestyle to reverse allergies without drugs. It offers an easy nutritional programme, starting with a Three-Day Power Wash designed to 'clear the tracks', to help us take back control. If you suffer from asthma, eczema or sinusitis, if you're sick of pain, fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, depression, anxiety or wondering what is behind your mysterious symptoms, then let Dr Galland's clinical experience and unique insights into cutting-edge science guide you back to health.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, Western Science, and the Fight Against Allergic Disease
This book represents a new and hopeful paradigm for treatment of diseases that are spreading globally as countries adopt Western lifestyles and standards of living. It describes the phenomenal science and clinical efficacy of the work of Dr Xiu-Min Li across a broad array of immune and inflammatory diseases. These include food allergies, asthma, eczema, 'new' diseases such as mast cell disorders, obesity, and mental health problems that are part of a worldwide 'epidemic of progress'.The most allergic people are caught in a cycle of medication, steroid dependency, emergency hospitalization, and curtailing their activities and diets to avoid triggers. Children are 'losing their childhoods.' They are fighting a battle against diet, climate change, and environmental degradation. Dr Li offers them hope by healing the entire immune system, not just address symptoms. In her practice Dr Li treats complex combinations of allergic diseases for all ages, from infancy through adulthood, bringing relief to people who have suffered terribly from oozing, bleeding skin, desperate breathing disorders, and life-threatening food allergies. She uses her vast knowledge of biochemistry to improve on the traditional decoctions to create refined versions suitable for modern tastes and lifestyles. In contrast with Western pharmaceuticals, which are the study of 'one molecule's effects on one other molecule' Dr Li's work shows the effects of multiple molecules on multiple other molecules. Increasing numbers of scientists are beginning to see the possibilities for their own research, with the prospects for more collaborations with prestigious institutions around the world. http://allergyblogawardsuk.co.uk/5-managing-asthma-allergies-with-henry-erlich/

Toxicology of the Immune System: A Human Approach
Robert Burrell Dennis K. Flaherty Leonard J. Sauers Toxicology of the Immune System A Human Approach Due to increased awareness of the AIDS crisis as well as concern about environmental chemicals, immunotoxicology has quickly become one of the most important and controversial topics in occupational medicine and toxicology. This insightful reference/text clarifies the subject by exploring the basic environmental, occupational, and therapeutic agents that can suppress or strengthen the immune system. The authors provide a necessary bridge between immunology and toxicology to explain the various products and processes that may change immune parameters, affect host resistance to infections and tumors, and alter a system's future reaction to exposure. They assess the damage done not only to the immune system, but also damage by the immune system as a result of altered functioning. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on the relevance to existing clinical health and possible future adverse effects. Even the more common immunotoxic conditions, such as food and drug intolerance, cigarette smoking, and occupational asthma, are put into perspective, with straightforward information on possible genetic, environmental, and pharmacological risk factors. Detailed sections are included on: Organ systems and target cells most often affected Types of damage and injury resulting from immunotoxic reactions Clinical populations in which immune system damage occurs Methods for investigating the etiology of agents and risk assessment Relevance of laboratory data to human risk Strategies for achieving standard practices to prevent the disparity in results that characterizes many immune system studies Regulatory affairs related to immunotoxicology Laboratory and experimental findings are probed to determine how and to what degree different immunotoxicants have induced clinical disease. Citations of animal research are restricted to those studies that point the way for future human studies, or have direct relevance to human situations. To further the reader's understanding of xenobiotics, the authors treat the subject of purposeful immunomodulation, achieved by administering immunosuppressive or immunopotentiating drugs. Despite increasing public awareness, there remains an inaccurate perception of what chemicals can and cannot do. This important reference sets the record straight, making it an essential source for toxicologists, immunologists, industrial hygienists, microbiologists, allergists, as well as all professionals in the agricultural and cosmetic industries, and those involved in chemical and biological regulation.
