Edril of Bree
The ways of the Breeworlders were strange, and their planet was a world full of violence. The boy on the starliner never wanted to go there, but he had no choice. To him it was a hopelessly backward dystopia, far from the bright lights and warm comforts of galactic civilization, but he would begin to see that things on Bree weren't entirely what they seemed. In that world he would discover that the truth is often hidden where it is plain to see. He would also learn that for some, living on Bree had a price.

The Exile Waiting
The Exile Waiting was the first novel by the Hugo and Nebula award-winning novelist Vonda N McIntyre, published in 1975. It introduces the world that McIntyre later made famous with her multi-award-winning Dreamsnake: a post-apocalyptic world in which Center, an enclosed domed city, is run by slave-owning families who control the planet's resources, and are strangling the city's economy by their decadence. Mischa is a thirteen-year old sneak thief, struggling to support her drug-addict elder brother Chris, and their predatory uncle who uses their telepathic link with their captive younger sister Gemmi to control them. The alien pseudosibs Subone and Subtwo have come to Earth to take over Center's resources. Subone is attracted by the decadent living on offer and begins to unlink from his sibling's conditioning. Subtwo has fallen unexpectedly in love with a slave. When Mischa defends Chris from Subone's malice, Subtwo hunts her beneath Center's foundations, and discovers how terrible Center's cruelty has been to its inhabitants with genetically distorted bodies and minds. They have to rescue them and leave, but how? Also included in this edition, the first republication of McIntyre's short story `Cages', originally published in Quark 4 in 1972, in which she first created the pseudosibs and their terrible origins. Vonda N McIntyre's most well-known novel is Dreamsnake (1978), which won the 1979 Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novel. She was a biologist by training, and the author of several Star Trek and Star Wars novels and many short stories. Her 1997 novel The Moon and the Sun was filmed in 2013 as The King's Daughter. She died in 2019.

From the author of The Loosening Skin and The Beauty, Aliya Whiteley, Skein Island is a powerful and disturbing look at the roles we play, and how they form and divide us. This new edition features a brand new novelette set in the same world as Skein Island. Skein Island, since 1945 a private refuge for women, lies in turbulent waters twelve miles off the coast of Devon. Visitors are only allowed by invitation from the reclusive Lady Amelia Worthington. Women stay for one week, paying for their stay with a story from their past; a Declaration for the Island's vast library. Marianne's invitation arrives shortly before her quiet life at the library is violently interrupted, the aftermath leaving her husband David feeling helpless. Now, just like her mother did seventeen years ago, she must discover what her story is. Secrets are buried deep on Skein Island. The monsters of Ancient Greece and the atrocities of World War II, heroes and villains with their seers and sidekicks, and the stories of a thousand lifetimes all threaten to break free. But every story needs an ending, whatever the cost.

The Ears of a Cat
To the well-meaning people of Future World the problem is obvious: too many people. However, so is the solution: eliminate as many of their fellow human beings as they can - though for Catherine Cooper, Cindy Horvath and Gina Saito, this is easier said than done... at least until they get their hands on a bird flu virus made lethal in the lab. But as they work out how to use it to the most devastating effect, the German security service gets wind of their intention, as does an unscrupulous freelance agent from the United States. Following a succession of bizarre events, including a conversation with a cat, a fractured penis and the testimony of a Japanese sex doll, only the last woman standing, fish-whisperer Gina Saito, can hope to bring it off. However, the only way she can do this will involve her own death on foreign soil... Set in Berlin, Los Angeles, England and Japan, the unfolding events show that having a plan isn't enough: good intentions can lead to ludicrous results and, ultimately, death.

'Dick's best work, and the most memorable alternative world tale...ever written' SCIENCE FICTION: THE 100 BEST NOVELS It is 1962 and the Second World War has been over for seventeen years: people have now had a chance to adjust to the new order. But it's not been easy. The Mediterranean has been drained to make farmland, the population of Africa has virtually been wiped out and America has been divided between the Nazis and the Japanese. In the neutral buffer zone that divides the two superpowers lives the man in the high castle, the author of an underground bestseller, a work of fiction that offers an alternative theory of world history in which the Axis powers didn't win the war. The novel is a rallying cry for all those who dream of overthrowing the occupiers. But could it be more than that? Subtle, complex and beautifully characterized, The Man in the High Castle remains the finest alternative world novel ever written, and a work of profundity and significance.

The Doctor and Peri land on the planet Necros to visit the funerary home Tranquil Repose - where the dead are interred and the near-dead placed in suspended animation until such time as their conditions can be cured. But the Great Healer of Tranquil Repose is far from benign. Under his command, Daleks guard the catacombs where sickening experiments are conducted on human bodies. The new life he offers the dying comes at a terrible cost - and the Doctor and Peri are being lured into a trap that will change them forever. At last, the only classic-era Doctor Who adventure never to be novelised is here, and by the author of the original script, Eric Saward.

The Deep
The water-breathing descendants of African slave women tossed overboard have built their own underwater society--and must reclaim the memories of their past to shape their future in this brilliantly imaginative novella inspired by the Hugo Award-nominated song The Deep from Daveed Diggs's rap group clipping Yetu holds the memories for her people--water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners--who live idyllic lives in the deep. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly, is forgotten by everyone, save one--the historian. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu. Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. And so, she flees to the surface, escaping the memories, the expectations, and the responsibilities--and discovers a world her people left behind long ago. Yetu will learn more than she ever expected to about her own past--and about the future of her people. If they are all to survive, they'll need to reclaim the memories, reclaim their identity--and own who they really are. Inspired by a song produced by the rap group Clipping for the This American Life episode We Are In The Future, The Deep is vividly original and uniquely affecting.

Atlas Alone
Six months after she left Earth, Dee is struggling to manage her rage toward the people who ordered the nuclear strike that destroyed the world. She's trying to find those responsible, and to understand why the ship is keeping everyone divided into small groups, but she's not getting very far alone. A dedicated gamer, she throws herself into mersives to escape and is approached by a designer who asks her to play test his new game. It isn't like any game she's played before. Then a character she kills in the climax of the game turns out to bear a striking resemblance to a man who dies suddenly in the real world at exactly the same time. A man she discovers was one of those responsible for the death of millions on Earth. Disturbed, but thinking it must be a coincidence, Dee pulls back from gaming and continues the hunt for information. But when she finds out the true plans for the future colony, she realises that to save what is left of humanity, she may have to risk losing her own.

The Glory of Xasxa
The Xasx were the race who dared to challenge the mighty Zhumaan, the aliens who controlled interstellar travel through their unique technology. It was a costly mistake, for when the Zhumaan came to destroy them, nothing was left standing on the ground, and the great population of Xasxa was reduced to only a few thousand souls in an event that would alter the Xasx forever. Before that dreadful day, the first Ispa had seen them, the disgustingly soft-bodied race who made treaties and conquered no one despite the superiority of their weapons. Ispa was punished with his fellow commanders for surrendering to them, but as he died he began to think their strange ways might have merit. It was the beginning of a change that would surprise the Zhumaan when the last Ispa met them face-to-face.

Kallocain
A pioneering work of dystopian fiction from one of Sweden's most acclaimed writers Written midway between Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four, as the terrible events of the Second World War were unfolding, Kallocain depicts a totalitarian 'World State' which seeks to crush the individual entirely. In this desolate, paranoid landscape of 'police eyes' and 'police ears', the obedient citizen and middle-ranking scientist Leo Kall discovers a drug that will force anyone who takes it to tell the truth. But can private thought really be obliterated? Karin Boye's chilling novel of creeping alienation shows the dangers of acquiescence and the power of resistance, no matter how futile.
