The Pearl
When Kino, a poor Indian pearl-diver, finds 'the Pearl of the world' he believes that his life will be magically transformed. He will marry Juana and their son Coyotito will be able to attend school. Obsessed by his dreams, Kino is blind to the greed and even violence the pearl arouses in him and his neighbours. Written with lyrical simplicity, The Pearl sets the values of the civilized world against those of the primitive and finds them tragically inadequate.

Lord of the Flies
A plane crashes on an uninhabited island and the only survivors, a group of schoolboys, assemble on the beach and wait to be rescued. By day they inhabit a land of bright fantastic birds and dark blue seas, but at night their dreams are haunted by the image of a terrifying beast. In this, his first novel, William Golding gave the traditional adventure story an ironic, devastating twist. The boys' delicate sense of order fades, and their childish fears are transformed into something deeper and more primitive. Their games take on a horrible significance, and before long the well-behaved party of schoolboys has turned into a tribe of faceless, murderous savages. First published in 1954, Lord of the Flies is now recognized as a classic, one of the most celebrated of all modern novels.

Of Mice and Men
Drifters in search of work, George and his childlike friend Lennie, have nothing in the world except the clothes on their back - and a dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch in California's Salinas Valley, but their hopes are dashed as Lennie - struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and feelings of jealousy - becomes a victim of his own strength. Tackling universal themes of friendship and shared vision, and giving a voice to America's lonely and dispossessed, Of Mice and Men remains Steinbeck's most popular work, achieving success as a novel, Broadway play and three acclaimed films.

Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street
In this novella, widely considered one of the finest works of American literature, a lawyer hires the incurably forlorn Bartleby as a clerk in his small firm. Silent and enigmatic, Bartleby performs well at first. One day, however, when requested by his employer to assist with some routine proofreading, he declines, using his famous phrase. Perplexed and oddly intrigued, the lawyer--who narrates the story--attempts to get to the bottom of Bartleby's refusals as the clerk more and more often states his preference not to, ultimately doing little work and much staring out the window. While the other clerks are contemptuous, the lawyer cannot bring himself to fire this strange, listless man, or to abandon his efforts to reason with him--even when he discovers that Bartleby has begun to live at the office ... In the 160 years or so since this story first appeared, attempts to decode its meanings have never ceased; Bartleby, and the events that follow from his blank descent into pure torpor, defy precise interpretation. Yet the experience of reading and rereading the tale is as unforgettable as the narrator's own impression of this quintessentially modern character.

The Neon Bible
The accomplished and evocative first novel by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Confederacy of Dunces. John Kennedy Toole wrote The Neon Bible for a literary contest at the age of sixteen. The manuscript was finally published twenty years after Toole's death. The Neon Bible opens with the narrator, a young man named David, on a train, leaving the small Southern town he's grown up in for the first time. What unspools is the tender and tragic coming-of-age story of a lonely child, a story that revolves around David's unorthodox friendship with his great-aunt Mae - a former stage performer who is fiercely at odds with the conservative townspeople - and the everyday toll of living in an environment of religious fanaticism. From the opening lines of The Neon Bible, David is fully alive, naive yet sharply observant, drawing us into his world through the sure artistry of John Kennedy Toole.

What Not
What Not is Rose Macaulay's speculative novel of post-First World War eugenics and newspaper manipulation that anticipated Aldous Huxley's Brave New World by 14 years. Published in 1918, it was hastily withdrawn due to a number of potentially libellous pages, and was reissued in 1919. But by then it was quickly overshadowed by Macaulay's next two novels, and never gained the attention it deserved. What Not is a lost classic of feminist wit and protest at social engineering, now republished with the suppressed pages reinstated. Kitty Grammont and Nicholas Chester are in love, but Kitty is certified as an A for breeding purposes, while politically ambitious Chester has been uncertificated, and may not marry. But why? There's nothing apparently wrong with him, he is admired in his field, and is charming and decisive. Although Kitty wields power as a senior civil servant in the Ministry of Brains, which makes these classifications, she does not have the freedom to marry who she wants. They ignore the restrictions, and carry on a discreet affair. But it isn't discreet enough for the media: the popular press, determined to smash the brutal regime of the Ministry of Brains, has found out about Kitty and Chester, and scents an opportunity for a scandalous exposure. The introduction is by Sarah Lonsdale, senior lecturer in journalism at City University London.

16 modern fiction superstars shine a startling light on the romance and pain of the infamous literary pair Heathcliff and Cathy. Short stories to stir the heart and awaken vital conversation about love. Sixteen stories inspired by Wuthering Heights. In `Terminus' a young woman hides in an empty Brighton hotel; in `Thicker Than Blood' a man sits in a hot tub stalking his newly-married love on social media; and in `A bird half-eaten' an amateur boxer prepares for a match. A woman recalls the `Heathcliffs I Have Known' and the physical danger she has borne at their hands; in `Anima' a child and a fox are unified in one startling moment of violence; and in `One Letter Different' two teenagers walk the moors and face up to their respective buried secrets. Curated by Kate Mosse and commissioned for Emily Bronte's bicentenary year in 2018, these fresh, modern stories pulse with the raw beauty and pain of love and are as timely as they are illuminating. Classic Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were German academics who collected and published folklore during the 19th century. Many of the tales they wrote down had previously only been passed down orally. The first collection of their fairy tales was published in 1812 to a lukewarm reception as they were not considered suitable for children. Over the next 45 years they were to be rewritten, expanded upon and sanitized seven times. There were originally around 150 stories, but now they are credited with having penned over 200. Their tales will be forever immortalised in popular culture helped in no small way by a string of Walt Disney films.

Persuasion (Barnes & Noble Collectible Classics: Flexi Edition)
Eight years ago, Anne Elliot broke off her engagement to the dashing young naval officer Frederick Wentworth on the advice of a friend. Now twenty-seven and considered a faded beauty, she is resigned to a spinster's life when she learns that Wentworth, now a captain and wealthy with prize money from the Napoleonic Wars, has returned. While Anne visits her married younger sister Mary, Wentworth pays frequent calls on Mary's two charming sisters-in-law. Although Anne tries to avoid him she cannot, and although she knows he has not forgiven her, his presence is a constant reminder of what she has lost. The Age of Innocence
The intelligent and charming Newland Archer - a member of one of New York's most prominent families - is living the life that has always been expected of him: he is engaged to the beautiful and well-connected May Welland and understands the rarefied world of Fifth Avenue society inside out. However, with the arrival of May's cousin, the free-spirited and unconventional Countess Ellen Olenska, Newland begins to doubt all that once seemed so natural to him. An extraordinarily well-observed dissection of New York high society in the 1870s - the world in which Edith Wharton grew up - The Age of Innocence shines a critical light on the social mores and values of the old order.

Middlemarch
'the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts' The greatest 'state of the nation' novel in English, Middlemarch addresses ordinary life at a moment of great social change, in the years leading to the Reform Act of 1832. Through her portrait of a Midlands town, George Eliot addresses gender relations and class, self-knowledge and self-delusion, community and individualism. Eliot follows the fortunes of the town's central characters as they find, lose, and rediscover ideals and vocations in the world. Through its psychologically rich portraits, the novel contains some of the great characters of literature, including the idealistic but naive Dorothea Brooke, beautiful and egotistical Rosamund Vincy, the dry scholar Edward Casaubon, the wise and grounded Mary Garth, and the brilliant but proud Dr Lydgate. In its whole view of a society, the novel offers enduring insight into the pains and pleasures of life with others, and explores nearly every subject of concern to modern life:. art, religion, science, politics, self, society, and, above all, human relationships. This edition uses the definitive Clarendon text.

A Study in Scarlet and Other Stories
A Study in Scarlet was written in 1886 and is the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, who would become the most famous detective duo in popular fiction. The story, and its main characters, attracted little public interest when it first appeared. Only 11 complete copies of the magazine in which the story first appeared, Beeton's Christmas Annual are known to exist now and they have considerable value. Although Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories that featured Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is one of only four full-length novels. A Study in Scarlet was the first work of detective fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as an investigative tool. The character of Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed by over 100 different actors in theatre, on radio, in film, on audiobook and on television.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and final novel by Anne Bronte. It was first published in 1848. It is probably the most shocking of the Brontes' novels and it had an instant and phenomenal success. However, after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication. Most critics now consider The Tenant of Wildfell Hall to be one of the first feminist novels. May Sinclair, a popular English writer of the time, said that the slamming of Helen's bedroom door against her husband reverberated throughout Victorian England. In leaving her husband, Helen violates not only social conventions, but also the early 19th century English law.
