Dear Life: A Doctor's Story of Love and Loss
'What a remarkable book this is; tender, funny, brave, heartfelt, radiant with love and life, and with the love of life. It brought me often to laughter and - several times - to tears' Robert Macfarlane From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Your Life in My Hands comes this vibrant, tender and deeply personal memoir that finds light and love in the darkest of places. As a specialist in palliative medicine, Dr Rachel Clarke chooses to inhabit a place many people would find too tragic to contemplate. Every day she tries to bring care and comfort to those reaching the end of their lives and to help make dying more bearable. Rachel's training was put to the test in 2017 when her beloved GP father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She learned that nothing - even the best palliative care - can sugar-coat the pain of losing someone you love. And yet, she argues, in a hospice there is more of what matters in life - more love, more strength, more kindness, more joy, more tenderness, more grace, more compassion - than you could ever imagine. For if there is a difference between people who know they are dying and the rest of us, it is simply this: that the terminally ill know their time is running out, while we live as though we have all the time in the world. Dear Life is a book about the vital importance of human connection, by the doctor we would all want by our sides at a time of crisis. It is a love letter - to a father, to a profession, to life itself.

Right from the Start: A Practical Guide for Helping Young Children with Autism
This book argues that autistic children can be successful in early learning environments when teachers and parents understand the basics of autism, and when they have the tools to help these children expand their social and emotional skills. For parents and teachers who may be unfamiliar with autism (especially in its milder, more elusive forms), Right from the Start is an indispensable resource explaining the best practices for teaching young children on the spectrum. The book offers practical strategies that any teacher can easily incorporate into her daily routine-strategies that enrich the learning environment for neurotypical children as well. Right from the Start is also a useful resource for parents who can practice many of the book's techniques at home to reinforce the development of key skills. While many educational and therapeutic approaches to autism emphasize changing children's behavior and gaining their compliance, this book foregrounds the importance of self-regulation. This concept refers to a person's ability to cope with emotional highs and lows, to control his or her reactions to events, and to feel just right. It is important that we help children learn to recognize, assess, and modulate their feelings because self-regulation is the foundation of all learning and social development. Children need to be able to self-regulate to get through the day and to function well in the long term. While all young children struggle with self-regulation, autistic children find it especially difficult to manage their strong feelings. As a result of their neurodifferences, these children experience high levels of anxiety, sensitivity to stimuli in the environment, and difficulty understanding the nuances of social interaction. These and other challenges compromise autistic children's ability to self-regulate. In addition to discussing the importance of self-regulation, the book addresses the following key aspects of autism: social interaction, play skills, and sensory processing issues. After explaining why children experience challenges in these areas-and how such challenges impact self-regulation-the book offers techniques designed to help children improve their coping skills and overcome the various difficulties associated with autism. The chapters outline concrete strategies for helping children increase their social awareness, manage their sensory needs, engage with teachers and peers, and develop the language necessary for communicating emotions. With the tools in this book, parents, teachers, and administrators can help autistic children thrive from the first moment they ever set foot in a classroom.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'Bella's brilliant love letter to running turns into an extraordinarily brave and frank account of her battle with anxiety. A compassionate and important book' Joe Lycett 'Perfect for resetting a glum January mindset' Alexandra Heminsley 'My kind of role model' Ben Fogle Divorced and struggling with deep-rooted mental health problems, Bella Mackie ended her twenties in tears. She could barely find the strength to get off the sofa, let alone piece her life back together. Until one day she did something she had never done of her own free will - she pulled on a pair of trainers and went for a run. That first attempt didn't last very long. But to her surprise, she was back out there the next day. And the day after that. She began to set herself achievable goals - to run 5k in under 30 minutes, to walk to work every day for a week, to attempt 10 push-ups in a row. Before she knew it, her mood was lifting for the first time in years. In Jog On, Bella explains with hilarious and unfiltered honesty how she used running to battle crippling anxiety and depression, without having to sacrifice her main loves: booze, cigarettes and ice cream. With the help of a supporting cast of doctors, psychologists, sportspeople and friends, she shares a wealth of inspirational stories, research and tips that show how exercise often can be the best medicine. This funny, moving and motivational book will encourage you to say 'jog on' to your problems and get your life back on track - no matter how small those first steps may be.

Bitterroot: A Salish Memoir of Transracial Adoption
2019 High Plains Book Award Winner for the Creative Nonfiction and Indigenous Writer categories In Bitterroot Susan Devan Harness traces her journey to understand the complexities and struggles of being an American Indian child adopted by a white couple and living in the rural American West. When Harness was fifteen years old, she questioned her adoptive father about her real parents. He replied that they had died in a car accident not long after she was born-except they hadn't, as Harness would learn in a conversation with a social worker a few years later. Harness's search for answers revolved around her need to ascertain why she was the target of racist remarks and why she seemed always to be on the outside looking in. New questions followed her through college and into her twenties when she started her own family. Meeting her biological family in her early thirties generated even more questions. In her forties Harness decided to get serious about finding answers when, conducting oral histories, she talked with other transracial adoptees. In her fifties she realized that the concept of home she had attributed to the reservation existed only in her imagination. Making sense of her family, the American Indian history of assimilation, and the very real-but culturally constructed-concept of race helped Harness answer the often puzzling questions of stereotypes, a sense of nonbelonging, the meaning of family, and the importance of forgiveness and self-acceptance. In the process Bitterroot also provides a deep and rich context in which to experience life.

Beyond Awkward Side Hugs: Living as Christian Brothers and Sisters in a Sex-Crazed World
From popular teacher and writer Bronwyn Lea, a biblical invitation to healthy male-female relationships by creating a vision beyond stilted and unhelpful don't-touch/don't-talk rules. When it comes to relationships between men and women in the church, we've got more questions than answers. How can men and women be in community when not married? Or if married, with people not our spouses? Can men and women be just friends ? How can we date wisely and well? What does it mean to be a woman if you're not a wife? Or a man if you're not a husband? How can we be in healthy, close relationships if we're single? In Beyond Awkward Side Hugs, Bronwyn Lea lays out a biblical vision for relationships between men and women in the church. Jesus' pattern for church living was one of family, of brothers and sisters living in intimate, healthy community with each other. Doing so calls for character and wisdom, for charting a path toward relationships that acknowledge gender but aren't sexualized, that go beyond the awkwardness of simplistic don't-touch/don't-talk rules. Rooted in Scripture and attested by personal and pastoral stories, Beyond Awkward Side Hugs is an invitation to relationship theology that moves beyond unhealthy, eroticized, fear-based patterns and toward gendered, generous relationships between men and women of character, loving one another as Jesus did.

Guiding the Next Great Generation: Rethinking How Teens Become Confident and Capable Adults
It's cliche to say today's adults hope the best for the next generation, yet fear the worst. As the gap between generations widens and our shared experiences dwindle, adults find it increasingly difficult to connect with and remain relevant to today's young people. So the question is, what values can we pass on that will help them to become the next great generation? And how do we communicate those values effectively? In this paradigm-shifting book, Jonathan Catherman shares with adults raised in the 1900s a fresh look at guiding 21st-century youth to become confident and capable adults. With relevant research and real-world examples, Catherman shows us the benefits of practicing and teaching four principles that will unite and empower us all: - build bridges between generations - transform raw talent into valued strengths - practice stewardship before leadership - live with purpose Whether the emerging generation knows it or not, they need you. Their greatness tomorrow begins with your guidance today.

My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me
An inspiring memoir of life, love, loss, and new beginnings by the widower of bestselling children's author and filmmaker Amy Krouse Rosenthal, whose last of act of love before her death was setting the stage for her husband's life without her in a column in the New York Times. On March 3, 2017, Amy Krouse Rosenthal penned an op-ed piece for the New York Times' Modern Love column - You May Want to Marry My Husband. It appeared ten days before her death from ovarian cancer. A heartbreaking, wry, brutally honest, and creative play on a personal ad-in which a dying wife encouraged her husband to go on and find happiness after her demise-the column quickly went viral, reaching more than five million people worldwide. In My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me, Jason describes what came next: his commitment to respecting Amy's wish, even as he struggled with her loss. Surveying his life before, with, and after Amy, Jason ruminates on love, the pain of watching a loved one suffer, and what it means to heal-how he and their three children, despite their profound sorrow, went on. Jason's emotional journey offers insights on dying and death and the excruciating pain of losing a soulmate, and illuminates the lessons he learned. As he reflects on Amy's gift to him-a fresh start to fill his empty space with a new story-Jason describes how he continues to honor Amy's life and her last wish, and how he seeks to appreciate every day and live in the moment while trying to help others coping with loss. My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me is the poignant, unreserved, and inspiring story of a great love, the aftermath of a marriage ended too soon, and how a surviving partner eventually found a new perspective on life's joys in the wake of tremendous loss.

HappiNest: Finding Fulfillment When Your Kids Leave Home
HappiNest is the first book to present a detailed road map for navigating the spiritual and practical challenges that arise after your kids leave home. We are entering uncharted territory that is more complex and vastly different from the landscape our parents faced. We have more opportunities but also more obligations. Our young adults are taking longer to finish school, settle on careers, and become independent, requiring more support in their twenties and thirties. At the same time, our parents are living longer and needing us more. Trying to meet the demands of these surrounding generations is prompting many of us to dip into savings and postpone retirement. This book culls wisdom from interviews with more than 300 people, including psychologists, psychiatrists, sociologists, young adults, and empty nesters. It also unearths new research on today's empty nesters that has been buried in studies on aging, relationships, and young adulthood. Creating a HappiNest takes hard work, and it is different for everyone. This book will show you how to relate better to your young adults, help them cope with obstacles they may face, and manage the household if your kids are among the one in three who boomerang back home. It will help you discover a renaissance in your marriage or, perhaps, handle empty nest divorce. It will show you how to cultivate friend networks and avoid suffocating your spouse. It will guide you to find new purpose and meaning after the kids leave. HappiNest will help you see the path ahead and find the hidden treasures along the way.
