Visual Literacy: Reading, Thinking, and Communicating with Visuals
Visual Literacy examines how teachers can use visuals to improve learning for all students. It provides teachers with a foundation in visual literacy, defined as the ability to read, think, and communicate with visually presented information. Results of studies of students' using visual information indicate that most students are clearly lacking in the tools needed to use visuals effectively. The book orients teachers to visual literacy and the world of visuals. It discusses various classroom tested strategies and activities for all students, including second language learners, and students with special needs. Stressing visual literacy skills helps students understand a visual more deeply so they can master the content they are learning. Teachers will learn to employ a literacy triad of reading, thinking, and communicating to aid students in their study of visuals. First, they inquire into the visual, reading it for content and context, including assessing the authenticity of the document. Second, they think about the document by analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating it to come up with answers to their inquiry. Graphic organizers help students decipher the content and understand the meaning of the visual document, connecting it to prior and future instruction. Third, they communicate their findings using visuals.

Literacy Education and Indigenous Australians: Theory, Research and Practice
This edited volume brings together diverse perspectives on Australian literacy education for Indigenous peoples, highlighting numerous educational approaches, ideologies and aspirations. The Australian Indigenous context presents unique challenges for educators working across the continent in settings ranging from urban to remote, and with various social and language groups. Accordingly, one of the book's main goals is to foster dialogue between researchers and practitioners working in these contexts, and who have vastly different theoretical and ideological perspectives. It offers a valuable resource for academics and teachers of Indigenous students who are interested in literacy-focused research, and complements scholarship on literacy education in comparable Indigenous settings internationally.

The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literacy Assessment and Instruction
When we stop driving the instruction and instead give our students the wheel, they will learn. -Gail Boushey & Allison Behne Teachers are learners too, and for the past ten years, Gail Boushey and Allison Behne have been working with hundreds of teachers and students nationwide, gaining insight into best practices for reading instruction. Using those insights, they developed The CAFE Book, Expanded Second Edition to help teachers apply what their research has shown-that reading instruction is not about the setting, the basal, or the book level. Rather, effective reading instruction is based on what that student needs in that moment. With the release of The CAFE Book in 2009, the CAFE system has been implemented in classrooms all over the world. It has changed the way teachers assess, teach, and track student information, and positively impacted the way students learn, practice, and talk about reading. The CAFE Book, Expanded Second Edition builds on the same research-based, student-centered foundations, but now includes A new process of planning data-driven instruction using the Seven Steps from Assessment to Instruction; The Instruction Protocol - a framework to guide your instruction and planning; Significant resources to help with lesson planning, assessment, goal setting, and parent involvement; A revised CAFE menu and a checklist of skills for emerging readers; New and improved forms for both the online conferring notebook and a pencil/paper notebook to support more effective conferring with students; The addition of CAFE's Essential Elements, a resource to guide your understanding of student-focused instruction; And new and revised Ready Reference Guides that include when to teach the strategy, options differentiating instruction, and partner strategies. The CAFE Book, Expanded Second Edition gives you a variety of tools to structure your literacy block and create an environment where your students are engaged readers and writers with resources that set them up for success. This CAFE system is all you need to support, guide, and coach your students toward the strategies that will move them forward.

Learning in Information-Rich Environments: I-LEARN and the Construction of Knowledge from Information
The amount and range of information available to today's students-and indeed to all learners-is unprecedented. If the characteristics of the information age demand new conceptions of commerce, national security, and publishing-among other things-it is logical to assume that they carry implications for education as well. Little has been written, however, about how the specific affordances of these technologies-and the kinds of information they allow students to access and create-relate to the central purpose of education: learning. What does learning mean in an information-rich environment? What are its characteristics? What kinds of tasks should it involve? What concepts, strategies, attitudes, and skills do educators and students need to master if they are to learn effectively and efficiently in such an environment? How can researchers, theorists, and practitioners foster the well-founded and widespread development of such key elements of the learning process? This second edition continues these discussions and suggests some tentative answers. Drawing primarily from research and theory in three distinct but related fields-learning theory, instructional systems design, and information studies-it presents a way to think about learning that responds directly to the actualities of a world brimming with information. The second edition also includes insights from digital and critical literacies and provides a combination of an updated research-and-theory base and a collection of instructional scenarios for helping teachers and librarians implement each step of the I-LEARN model. The book could be used in courses in teacher preparation, academic-librarian preparation, and school-librarian preparation.

Teaching Words and How They Work: Small Changes for Big Vocabulary Results
Research shows that vocabulary is the best support for students' comprehension of narrative and information texts. Often, vocabulary instruction focuses on a few target words in specific texts. However, to understand the many new words in complex texts students need to know how words work. This book, written by an award-winning authority on reading instruction, shows teachers how to make small changes to teach more words and also how words work. Many of these small changes involve enrichments to existing vocabulary practices, such as word walls and conversations with students. Each chapter includes descriptions of teachers' implementation of small changes to support big gains in students' vocabulary. This book, which has sufficient depth in research and theory for graduate and undergraduate courses in vocabulary instruction, also offers practical steps that K-8 teachers can use in any reading program to help all students grow their vocabulary. Teaching Words and How They Work shows teachers how to: Identify the most important word families to teach. Teach students to use opening text as background knowledge for comprehending the rest of the text. Use word walls with more purpose and greater student engagement. Select the right words to teach from new information texts. Better understand limitations of leveled texts and how to adjust. Use assets and address challenges to support English learners. Access free mentor and teacher resources online at textproject.org.

Story in Children's Lives: Contributions of the Narrative Mode to Early Childhood Development, Literacy, and Learning
This book is based on the power of stories to support children in all areas of their lives. It examines the role narratives can play in encouraging growth in contexts and domains such as personal and family identity, creative movement, memory and self-concept, social relationships, or developing a sense of humor. Each chapter describes innovative and research-based applications of narratives such as movement stories, visual narratives to develop historical thinking, multimodal storytelling, bibliotherapy, mathematics stories, family stories, and social narratives. The chapters elaborate on the strength of narratives in supporting the whole child in diverse contexts from young children on the autism spectrum improving their social skills at school, to four- and five-year-olds developing historical thinking, to children who are refugees or asylum-seekers dealing with uncertainty and loss. Written by accomplished teachers, researchers, specialists, teaching artists and teacher educators from several countries and backgrounds, the book fills a gap in the literature on narratives. ...this work delves into the topic of narratives in young children's lives with a breadth of topics and depth of study not found elsewhere. Collectively, the insights of the contributors build a convincing case for emphasizing story across the various disciplines and developmental domains of the early childhood years. The writing style is scholarly, yet accessible. Authors used a wide array of visual material to make their points clearer and show the reader what meaningful uses of story look like . Controversial Books in K-12 Classrooms and Libraries: Challenged, Censored, and Banned
Afraid of the Light: Censorship of Books in K-12 Classrooms and Libraries analyzes the history of controversy surrounding assigned reading in K-12 classrooms and books available in school libraries. Randy Bobbitt outlines the history of book banning and controversy in the United States, stemming from 1950s conservative Cold War values of patriotism and respect for authority and ramping up through the 1960s and onward as media coverage and parental intervention into the inner workings of schools increased. The author claims that sensitive topics, including sexuality, suicide, and drug use, do not automatically imply the glorification of deviant behavior, but can be used constructively to educate students about the reality of life. Bobbitt argues that in an effort to shield children from the dangers of controversial issues, parents and administrators are depriving them of the ability to discover and debate values that are inconsistent with their own and those around them, teaching instead that avoidance of different viewpoints is the solution. Scholars of education, communication, literature, and policy will find this book especially useful.

Rachel is utterly fed up of being invisible to everyone around her. Getting to rub shoulders with a pop star is absolutely what Rachel needs to give her the recognition she longs for. But after a jokey idea from the school librarian sets her on the path to creating a Fame Formula, a new plan starts to take shape.
