The Educationalization of Student Emotional and Behavioral Health: Alternative Truth
This book examines the current political, social, and economic positions that push the responsibility for the emotional health of students onto schools. The context of recent education reform asks schools to mitigate adverse emotional health of students by developing and implementing broad programming, curriculum, and policies immersed in cognitive behavioral approaches. The design plan is intended to build resilience and develop strategies in students that will enable them to succeed despite adverse structural conditions. The swindle of education reform is that it deflects and blames families, youth, and the school system for the social ills of society. From the perspective of a thirty year Massachusetts educator and high school principal emerges an alternative reality that not only challenges decades of education reform entrenched in victim blaming but also exposes a serious responsibility gap.

This book focuses on the dynamic and rapidly expanding field of transnational higher education (TNE). Despite the increasing importance of TNE and the interest it has attracted from various stakeholders, there is a lack of theoretical and empirical evidence on several aspects pertaining to its operation and governance. This book provides a unique combination of contributions from researchers and practitioners in a wide variety of case studies from TNE exporting countries in Europe and Asia. In doing so, the editors, with added support from Dr Christopher Hill, examine how this gap between research and practice can be bridged. This valuable edited collection will be of use to researchers and practitioners in transnational education, as well as students and scholars of international education and higher education policy.

Navigating the Changing Landscape of Formal and Informal Science Learning Opportunities
This book presents research involving learning opportunities that are afforded to learners of science when the focus is on linking the formal and informal science education sectors. It uses the metaphor of a landscape as it emphasises how the authors see the possible movement within a landscape that is inclusive of formal, informal and free-choice opportunities. The book explores opportunities to change formal school science education via perspectives and achievements from the informal and free-choice science education sector within the wider lifelong, life-wide education landscape. Additionally it explores how science learning that occurs in a more inclusive landscape can demonstrate the potential power of these opportunities to address issues of relevance and engagement that currently plague the learning of science in school settings. Combining specific contexts, case studies and more general examples, the book examines the science learning landscapes by means of the lens of an ecosystem and the case of the Synergies longitudinal research project. It explores the relationships between school and museum, and relates the lessons learned through encounters with a narwhal. It discusses science communication, school-community partnerships, socioscientific issues, outreach education, digital platforms and the notion of a learning ecology.

Sketching a Place for Education in Times of Learning
This book explores how traditional institutions of education are affected by the current discourse and practices of `learning'; and more specifically, how the evolution towards so-called `learning environments' affects the kind of gathering or association that is staged and configured within families, schools and universities. In addition, it addresses the question of how to articulate what is educational in the context of `making' family, school or university, and to what extent this making is always also a public act. The aim is to approach and investigate family, school and university as educational practices, to focus on the forms of gatherings or associations that take shape within them, and to explore the public, but also possible `privatizing' character of these aspects. The book presents a diverse range of sketches intended as preparatory study exercises. What they all share, despite the different hands and eyes, and the different sensitivities, is the attempt to figure out what education is all about. Three objectives can be distinguished for the sketches: a cartographic one (to map the discourse of learning but also the discursive and material arrangements of actual educational practices), a morphological one (to describe the educational forms of gathering) and a theoretical one (to bring educational issues into the discussion). The book's overall aims are to re-establish `the educational' as an issue; to make it visible, to give it shape, to give it a voice, and to make it a thing that can and should be discussed, thus establishing a point of departure for further inquiry and its (re)invention.

Educating Prospective Secondary Mathematics Teachers: Knowledge, Identity, and Pedagogical Practices
This book highlights innovative approaches to preparing secondary mathematics teachers. Based on empirical findings gathered in several countries on five continents, it provides a wealth of best practices for preparing secondary mathematics teachers, and discusses issues related to their professional and personal growth, such as identity, content knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge which also includes knowledge of integrating technology into teaching and learning mathematics. Divided into four parts, the book focuses on field experiences, technologies, tools and resources, teacher knowledge, and teacher professional identities. Some of the main threads running through the book are: the importance of university and school partners working together to ensure preservice secondary mathematics teacher' success in developing pedagogical strategies that lead toward students' mathematical engagement and achievement; the critical need for preservice secondary mathematics teachers to develop strong content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge; and the importance of providing opportunities, during pre-service education, for developing prospective teachers 'professional identities.

Enhancing Employability in Higher Education through Work Based Learning
This book focuses on a renewed interest in work based learning in higher education. Due to an increased emphasis on employability in the graduate population, supported by wider policy changes, work based learning is becoming an increasingly pressing issue in higher education. The authors detail innovations from a breadth of UK universities, where academics have creatively addressed changes in work based learning structure, pedagogy and support systems. These changes in turn recognise the impact of real-life learning experiences on student progression, on both an academic development and a personally transformative level. Encompassing a wide variety of topics, the examples within the book are supported by theory and carefully detailed practice pedagogy. This valuable edited collection will be of interest to practitioners and scholars of work based learning and higher education, as well as a useful practical guide for academic developers.

The A-Z of the PhD Trajectory: A Practical Guide for a Successful Journey
This textbook is a guide to success during the PhD trajectory. The first part of this book takes the reader through all steps of the PhD trajectory, and the second part contains a unique glossary of terms and explanation relevant for PhD candidates. Written in the accessible language of the PhD Talk blogs, the book contains a great deal of practical advice for carrying out research, and presenting one's work. It includes tips and advice from current and former PhD candidates, thus representing a broad range of opinions. The book includes exercises that help PhD candidates get their work kick-started. It covers all steps of a doctoral journey in STEM: getting started in a program, planning the work, the literature review, the research question, experimental work, writing, presenting, online tools, presenting at one's first conference, writing the first journal paper, writing and defending the thesis, and the career after the PhD. Since a PhD trajectory is a deeply personal journey, this book suggests methods PhD candidates can try out, and teaches them how to figure out for themselves which proposed methods work for them, and how to find their own way of doing things.

Spatial Sense Makes Math Sense: How Parents Can Help Their Children Learn Both
Spatial Sense Makes Math Sense: How Parents Can Help Their Children Learn Both brings the strengths of both algebra (arithmetic) and geometry into focus by showing how spatial relationships can make both make more sense. Parents will learn how to further develop and improve their child's spatial sense using visual-spatial strategies of classifying, drawing diagrams, big idea concept building, visualizing, and more. As Sawyer encourages, Even if the pictures are not good, the effort of making them will leave lasting traces in the mind and can cause the work to be remembered. Whether you had a preference for geometry and endured algebra, loved algebra and never understood geometry, or were one of those people who never recognized a purpose for any of the math topics or, in truth, in any mathematics, this book will show parents how developing spatial sense can help visually explain both algebra and geometry relationships. You will read about Sophie Germain who believed that algebra and geometry worked hand-in-hand because, as she described them, algebra is written geometry and geometry is figured algebra.

Taking Control of Writing Your Thesis offers a clear account of the how, what, why and who of working together to produce, finish and submit a successful thesis. Guccione is a Thesis Coach and Thesis Mentoring Programme Designer and is currently researching the barriers to thesis completion; Wellington has supervised and examined numerous dissertations at MA and doctoral level. They draw on these experiences throughout. They show that planning, writing, and support for thesis writers is a collaborative venture but also one which students can take ownership of and manage. They show that there are ways for students to become more connected to what and who they need, and explore the collegial and peer-support structures that are there to be utilised. They situate the student within an educational context viewing them not as the lone researcher able or not able, skilled or unskilled, but as the navigator of the writing process. The authors draw on their experience to provide ways of thinking, and tools for empowering students to feel more in control of the practices of writing about research. The book explores every aspect of the research journey, including the emotional side of writing, the ground rules of supervision and the use of coaching and mentoring support systems. The inclusion of student voice brings the student perspective to life, making the content especially accessible.
