What's the Right Thing to Do?: Promoting Thoughtful and Socially Responsible Behavior in the Early Childhood Years
Making choices is one of the more pervasive acts of life. Almost every action we take demands that choices be made. Knowing how to choose wisely, to choose after reflection, to be aware of what motivates that choice, to see the consequences of that choice on others enables us to live healthier, more productive and more responsible lives. We now live in a world in which our traditional moral exemplars have been less than honorable in their public behavior. With fewer heroes and flawed role models, how are children to come to an understanding of what's right, what's good, decent and socially responsible? Do as I say, not as I do is hardly a viable tenet to guide children's choices. This book offers important tools for carrying out effective strategies that build caring environments in the classroom and home; for teaching children to weigh decisions in the face of potential consequences, examine rationales for their choices, and study the effects of their choices on others, i.e., to think more carefully about ethical problems, in the presence of the moral freedom to determine for themselves what it means to lead a good and virtuous life.

A Fragile Enterprise: Yesterday's Schools and Tomorrow's Students
A Fragile Enterprise recounts true stories the front lines of the struggle between the entitled few and the marginalized many in America's public schools. In this book, you'll learn about the national narrative of education from the viewpoint of students and their families. You'll discover: *That despite the massive expenditure of public funds, large-scale national education improvement efforts have largely failed *That failing schools seldom have the resources and skills to implement the programs that are thrust upon them. *That the charter school solution leaves behind the students who need help the most. *How seldom families are involved in meaningful ways in the education of their children. *What the best teachers do and why they do it that way.

Buddhist-Based Universities in the United States: Searching for a New Model in Higher Education investigates in depth four American Buddhist universities, namely, the Dharma Realm Buddhist University, the University of the West, the Soka University of America, and the Naropa University, all of which offer degrees in liberal arts and professional fields, and at the same time educate their students in the philosophy and practices of Buddhism. Buddhist universities in the United States are unique because there are no comparable universities based on the philosophy and practices of other Asian religions also popular in the United States, such as Hinduism, Confucianism, or Sikhism. Even the Jewish community has created only two universities in which professional skills and liberal arts are taught from the position of the moral-philosophical principles of Judaism. This book presents the institutional history and academic programs of four Buddhist universities in America and analyzes Buddhist-based pedagogical principles, as well as teaching and learning techniques, which can be very useful for other colleges and universities in the United States.

There is a growing trend in education for educators to support students in the development of social and emotional skills. SEL mandates are now part of many state assessments and national initiatives, and there are countless curriculum from which principals and teachers may choose. However, many of these curricular materials fail to address the question of pedagogy, or what is the best method for teaching social and emotional skills? Humanizing the Classroom: Using Role Plays to Teach Social and Emotional Skills in Middle and High School answers this question by presenting the pedagogical basis for using role plays to teach social and emotional skills, creating a clear link between SEL and the need for culturally relevant teaching, and providing over 45 model lessons that can be delivered in middle and high school classrooms. A rich resource for principals seeking advisory curriculum materials, classroom teachers interested in integrating SEL into their classroom practice, and educational theater and drama teachers, Humanizing the Classroom addresses the how, why and what of teaching social and emotional skills in our diverse society.

Critical Essays on the New Moral Imperative for Supporting Marginalized Students in PK-20 Education
Marginalization of groups transpires when a dominant group precludes a group of individuals from participating in activities or gaining access to services. As the global economy and technologies have significantly changed, it has been assumed that equal access to educational opportunities would be more readily available for traditionally ostracized groups. In contrast, the opposite has occurred: the exclusion from educational, social, and political activities among marginalized groups has become much more pronounced, necessitating the imperative for a new moral dialogue among teachers and teacher educators. Critical Essays on the New Moral Imperative for Supporting Marginalized Students in PK-20 Education provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of social justice and critical pedagogy as it relates to teaching culturally, economically, ethnically, socially, or other marginalized PK-20 student populations. This book highlights a variety of topics such as educational technology, ethical theory, and digital agency. It is ideal for teaching professionals, pre-service and in-service teachers, educational researchers, administrators, sociologists, teacher preparation faculty, and students.

Complete the Agenda in Higher Education: Challenge Beliefs about Student Success is a bold call to action to do more than just improve college completion rates. This book is for community college board members, administrators, faculty and staff who also want to: (1) foster beliefs that will enable students to finish what they start; (2) empower students to overcome daily challenges and real adversity; and (3) transform human potential into achievement, for a lifetime. Courageous educators, foundations, associations and researchers made community colleges better than we were a decade ago. Completion rates have improved somewhat as a result, but too many students still do not finish because the Completion Agenda is incomplete. This book describes compelling reasons why a shift from a completion-only-mindset to the Beliefs Agenda (completion with GRIT) is critical for the future of America. It provides practical implementation methods, offers engaging teaching tactics, and proposes sensible strategies.

Disability and World Language Learning: Inclusive Teaching for Diverse Learners
The release of a report by the Modern Language Association, Foreign Languages and Higher Education: New Structures for a Changed World, focused renewed attention on college foreign language instruction at the introductory level. Frequently, the report finds, these beginning courses are taught by part-time and untenured instructors, many of whom remain on the fringes of the department, with little access to ongoing support, pedagogical training, or faculty development. When students with sensory, cognitive or physical disabilities are introduced to this environment, the results can be frustrating for both the student (who may benefit from specific instructional strategies or accommodations) and the instructor (who may be ill-equipped to provide inclusive instruction). Soon after the MLA report was published, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages issued Diversity and Inclusion in Language Programs, a position statement highlighting the value of inclusive classrooms that support diverse perspectives and learning needs. That statement specifies that all students, regardless of background, should have ample access to language instruction. Meanwhile, in the wake of these two publications, the number of college students with disabilities continues to increase, as has the number of world language courses taught by graduate teaching assistants and contingent faculty. Disability and World Language Learning begins at the intersection of these two growing concerns: for the diverse learner and for the world language instructor. Devoted to practical classroom strategies based on Universal Design for Instruction, it serves as a timely and valuable resource for all college instructors-adjunct faculty, long-time instructors, and graduate assistants alike-confronting a changing and diversifying world language classroom.
