Education Policy for Social Change: Critical Issues in American Education
Education Policy for Social Change: Critical Issues in American Education examines and discusses educational policy and issues that arise in all aspects of American education. The anthology features a collection of academic, comprehensive, and rigorous papers and articles that explore the myths of the failing and the reinventing of American public education as the background for a larger, interdisciplinary discussion of education and social change. The book calls attention to the broader case for good public education and a liberally educated community. Over the course of 16 chapters, readers are immersed in academic works that examine inclusivity in the classroom, citizenship education, issues of class and race, school reform, policy work as activism in teacher education, STEM, arts in education, and more. Each reading is supported by an introduction, conclusion, and discussion questions. Filled to the brim with engaging, scholarly insight, Education Policy for Social Change is ideal for courses in education policy and educational administration. It can also be immensely valuable for individuals who are interested in exploring the connection between teaching, learning, and positive change in the American education system.

Education and Development in India: Critical Issues in Public Policy and Development
Drawing on empirical, interdisciplinary research, this book presents a critical review of some of the major issues that are of interest to researchers, policymakers and planners in developing as well as advanced countries, including specifically in India. It provides an in-depth review of some of the major development policy issues in education in general, and in India in particular, over the past 2-3 decades. Besides presenting an overview of the educational developments in India that reflects issues such as growth, equity, efficiency, foreign aid, decentralization, center-state relations, financing, and cost recovery, the book puts forward in-depth analyses of education poverty, interrelations between education and poverty, low level of outcomes in elementary education, effects of structural adjustment policies and approaches on education, south-south cooperation, etc. It also critically discusses changes in policies relating to financing higher education, external assistance for education, and how the growth of private higher education is affecting society at large. The dichotomy between public policy and action is also highlighted in many chapters. On the whole, while the importance of education is being increasingly recognized, the state does not seem to be as willing to foot the bill for education as the households and even the private sector. Occasionally contrasting with international evidence on, for example, financing higher education, private higher education, or the effects of neo-liberal policies, the book offers an interesting read for a wider audience.

Supporting Fraternities and Sororities in the Contemporary Era: Advancements in Practice
Supporting Fraternities and Sororities in the Contemporary Era is inspired by sustained and reoccurring professional conversations and scholarship that have suggested that not just change is necessary, but that there ought to be a fundamental shift towards reconceptualizing the construct of fraternities and sororities. The co-editors curate work from scholars and noteworthy practitioners from across higher education to provide an imperative text that reflects the complexity and expansiveness by addressing diversity, programming, and support approaches. This text commences with the understanding that issues will continuously exist, requiring a greater nuanced depth of appreciation to reduce their negative impact. It also summarizes national organizations from authentic, represented voices. Chapters then focus on solutions to support the fraternity and sorority experience, providing strategies and emerging explanations for the issues described in this text. Supporting Fraternities and Sororities seeks to do exactly as the title implies: to inform all stakeholders so that they can make better decisions about the future of these institutions.

Improving Human Performance in Dynamic Tasks: Applications in Management and Industry
This book is about improving human decision making and performance in complex, dynamic tasks. The defining characteristics of a dynamic decision task are that there are a number of decisions required, that decisions are interdependent and that the environment in which the decision is made is transient and feedback is pervasive. Examples of dynamic tasks include the sustainable management of renewable resources and how businesses might allocate resources for research and development (R&D) projects. Decision making in dynamic tasks can be improved through training with system dynamics-based interactive learning environments (ILE's) that include systematic debriefing. Some key features of the book include its didactic approach, numerous tables, figures, and the multidimensional evaluative model. Researchers can use the developed evaluation model to gauge various decision-aiding technologies. How to Improve Human Performance in Dynamic Tasks appeals to those interested in the design and evaluation of simulation-based decision support systems, as well as policy makers, students, researchers, and industrialists concerned by the issue of improving human performance in organizational tasks.

Transition for Pupils with Special Educational Needs: Implications for Inclusion Policy and Practice
Moving from primary to post-primary school and moving from post-primary to further/higher education pose significant challenges to many young people. Both transitions force young people toward greater personal autonomy, self-awareness and ideally self-efficacy. For students with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND), these challenges are potentially greater, and continuity in, or access to new, support may be necessary to facilitate these transitions in a manner that gives all students equal opportunities for taking charge of their own lives, including their education. The existing empirical literature on the transitions of students with SEND at these levels is limited. This book reviews the conceptual, policy and research evidence on young people's experiences of these transitions. The book also reports on new research conducted with young people with SEND and relevant stakeholders (including parents, educational professionals and voluntary agencies) involved in these transitions in Ireland. In so doing, the book provides a framework of evidence-based practice that can enable schools and professionals to develop effective and inclusive transition policies and programmes.

The Gradual Release of Responsibility in Literacy Research and Practice
Educators are always in search of approaches that promote student development and academic achievement. Engaging learners in purposeful instruction in skills and strategies is a cornerstone in every classroom. The gradual release of responsibility (GRR) model requires the responsibility of learning to shift from being teacher-centric towards students gradually assuming responsibility as independent learners. In the last 35 years, the gradual release of responsibility model of instruction has become synonymous with some of the most effective approaches to teach both skills and content to students of all ages. Evidence-based practices have been documented across the globe not only in literacy but also in most disciplines across the curriculum. While the GRR model is a well-established theory, its implementations have not been researched. This edited volume discusses how the GRR model evolved and has been applied, how it benefits learners and teachers, and how it can be utilised for years to come. By looking not only at the gradual release of responsibility model from a theoretical standpoint but also the research and practice of this approach, this book will prove invaluable for educational leaders and researchers alike.

Helping Families of Youth with School Attendance Problems: A Practical Guide for Mental Health and School-Based Professionals
School attendance problems, even in mild forms, are a significant risk factor for social, behavioral, and academic problems in childhood and adolescence. These cases tend to be urgent and complex in nature, with problems that manifest both at home and at school. As such, mental health and school-based professionals need practical and efficient strategies to resolve school attendance problems. Helping Families of Youth with School Attendance Problems is a real-world guide to addressing school attendance problems at different levels of severity and complexity. The book offers specific procedures for many types of cases to address these problems in a relatively short period of time, and within the constraints of most private practice and school settings. The text also considers developmental level, with distinct coverage of elementary school children as well as adolescents in middle school and in high school. The book consists of seven empirically-supported chapters that guide readers through assessment, consultation, and intervention processes. Given the limited timeframe frequently faced by mental health and school-based professionals, these processes are often blended. Beginning with an overview of school attendance problems, the heart of the book offers core intervention components as well as other procedures to enhance the effectiveness of these components. These components cover key aspects of anxiety and contingency management, school reintegration, and school engagement as well as suggestions for many specific scenarios. The final chapter focuses on chronic and severe school attendance problems and other highly challenging scenarios common to these young people. Helping Families of Youth with School Attendance Problems is a must-have resource for mental health and school-based professionals alike, as well as for others who regularly engage with this population.

Each of the four volumes in this set, as well as each volume independently, provide comparative analyses for researches, practitioners, and students of the law and education in examining law and education in various countries around the world. Designed to allow readers to learn from, rather than copy, the legal and educational systems in these volumes, the books are designed to generate thought and conversation on how education can be improved around the world. By having chapter authors, leading academicians in the home countries, follow the same template so it can be easier to compare similarities and differences, thereby helping to make the book user friendly. The value of these books is that they should help to enhance international awareness of the similarities and advantages associated with bringing together knowledge from various countries concerning education law. Volume 4, encompassing Selected Nations in Africa and the Americas, namely Brazil, Canada, Mauritius, United States, South Africa and Venezuela, consists of detailed analysis of educational law and systems in these representative countries so researchers and students there and elsewhere can learn from one another.

Effective School Leadership: Responding to Change
`This is a zippy read arising out of the international project effective leadership in a time of change , which grapples with the nature and practice of leadership (as opposed to management or administration) in schools' - Times Educational Supplement Who really runs the school - head teachers or governors? What do pupils think of their leaders and should they have a bigger role in school leadership? Is the United Kingdom obsessed with discipline and `strong leadership' as others suggest? Is New Public Management an insidious undermining of what is important and valuable in the UK educational system? The answers to these and other questions present surprises and challenges to the way things are seen in the UK. This book provides evidence from other countries that raises many questions about effective leadership and how it is seen from different viewpoints, and examines the issues in a political context and in relation to a changing world scene.

Educational Leadership: Culture and Diversity
`A highly recommendable and powerful work...I have found this book to be both a revelatory mirror on past events and an inviting window to future prospects. I am certain that it will be of equal or greater value to all those involved and interested in the tangled complexities, and inherent rewards, of educational leadership, particularly within international or cross-cultural contexts' - Daniel H. Jarvis, International Review of Education `Clive Dimmock and Allan Walker's books is a valuable addition to the overcrowded literature on leadership. This is a useful and important book because citizenship, globalization and the tensions with nationality should be the concern of all who lead any school; even monofaith, monoethic and monolingual schools' - Tim Brighouse, TES Friday 'The authors offer a rigorous and systematic analysis based on careful definition, illustration and discussion which demonstrates the importance of understanding culture, leadership and their interaction in different contexts: in doing so they provide a powerful antidote to the simplistic export of ideas and lay foundations for a more sophisticated conceptual framework for the study of educational leadership' - John West-Burnham, International Leadership Centre, University of Hull This key text in educational leadership focuses on the significance of the context and culture of schools. The book addresses the growing recognition of cultural differences between societies and the resultant differences in schooling. It also deals with vital issues relating to multicultural education and the leadership of multicultural schools. Drawing on their first-hand experience, the authors explore the differences evident in classroom teaching and learning, as well as organizational, leadership and management aspects of schools. They show how such differences can make over-reliance on Anglo-American approaches misleading, ineffective and restrictive. Key features of the book include: - a methodology to support the emerging field of international and comparative educational leadership and management - in-depth comparative analysis of Anglo-American and Asian schooling and educational management - the leadership of multi-cultural schools This book is essential reading for professionals and students of educational leadership and management, as well as administrators.

Crying for Help: The No Blame Approach to Bullying
`The book is concise and persuasive. The evidence presented in it does indicate that in certain circumstances the approach can be highly successful. It is a useful resource for those schools re-evaluating their policy documents on bullying and a valuable training resource for those involved in teacher education. It will certainly provoke debate in staff rooms and lecture theatres alike' - Maggie Bowen, North East Wales Institute of Higher Education You have probably heard of the 'No-Blame-Approach' to bullying. The method was featured in the BBC 2 documentary 'I Just Want it to Stop!', broadcast in August 1997. This book is the only comprehensive account of the 'No-Blame-Approach', and describes its development. The book is supported by accounts from teachers, psychologists and parents describing their experiences using the method with children and young people in both primary and secondary settings. The latest edition of this book includes a reference to the research carried out by Sue Young in Hull, confirming the effectiveness of the No Blame Support Group Approach. This is an essential read for every school intending to evaluate its anti-bullying policy and implement positive procedures.

Medical Leadership and Management: A Case-based Approach
Leadership and management in the context of healthcare is about improving the quality of medical care delivered at all levels. Doctors frequently lead healthcare teams with responsibility for significant clinical resource which requires management and leadership skills regardless of specialty. A growing body of literature has also argued that medical leadership plays an integral part in the success and effectiveness of organisational change in the health sector. Being an effective medical leader requires a different set of skills from being a good clinician. It is therefore important that future medical graduates are supported and equipped with the high-level skills required for their role (e.g. leading and developing multidisciplinary teams, understanding organizational systems, processes and interdependencies, redesigning services and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders). This growing interest across the globe in preparing medical graduates for the role of medical manager and leader requires a comprehensive approach to education and training which begins at an undergraduate level. As an undergraduate these skills are frequently neglected or not taught well. However, with the correct resources and using a case-based approach the undergraduate program can easily support the development of practical leadership and management skills. The case studies and supporting text will provide an overview of the fundamentals of leadership theory and practice relevant to medical students, junior doctors and specialty trainees. Using internationally recognized competency frameworks this book will support the acquisition of knowledge and skills relevant to medical management and leadership such as project management, intelligent leadership, presentation skills, audit, organizational decision making and engaging relevant stakeholders.

Management Theories for Educational Change
`This is an exceptional book. It tempted me to throw out most of my collected works on the management of change, because the author has somehow succeeded by including almost every aspect of educational change that any practitioner would wish to consider....Overall this is a very stimulating book. It is packed with information and the ideas and concepts contained could pack a school development plan for many years' - School Leadership and Management The theories and practices from the literature on business, manufacturing and commerce which inform principles for managing change in education are identified in this book. The author shows how the complexity of change can be addressed effectively. One principle of effective management of change is its potential to empower the individuals and organizations, its power to create and operate win/win situations. That can only be done by addressing the human side of organizations. The strength of the business literature is that far from advocating the austere, over-rationalized, dehumanized and objective pursuit of profit at all costs, it suggests that the effective management of change is an affirmation of the humanity of business.

Multiple Alterities: Views of Others in Textbooks of the Middle East
This book highlights and examines the role of the textbook in legitimising established political and social orders. It analyses the way in which the 'other' is presented in school textbooks, focusing on a number of countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and argues that the role of textbooks in developing and maintaining a national identity should be afforded greater critical attention. Textbooks can help form national identities by developing a society's collective memory; this might involve a historical narrative which may be self-contradictory or even fabricated to a certain extent, including myths, symbols and collective memories that divide us from them , and ultimately resulting a dichotomy between the Self and the Other. As well as addressing a range of theoretical questions relating to the study of textbooks generally, the volume also covers a broad spectrum of Middle Eastern states and societies, with contributions from Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Cyprus, Lebanon, Iraq, Kurdistan, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Israel and Palestine. It will be essential reading for researchers and students working in the fields of Education, Sociology and History, particularly those with an interest in national identities in the MENA region.
