Leadership in Higher Education from a Transrelational Perspective
There is an abundance of research saying that not only is leadership in higher education ineffective but also that it actually undermines the essential work that should be happening in universities. Christopher M. Branson, Maureen Marra, Margaret Franken and Dawn Penney provide a new insight into leadership that has proven to be far more effective for all involved - the transrelational approach to leadership. This new way of leading places an emphasis on the importance of the relationships that the leader develops with each and every person they are leading. However, in order to apply this new way of leading, higher education institutions must change some of the key ways they work. This book provides direction in how this can happen, what benefits would result, and offers a view on what the future for higher education might be if such changes to leadership are not made. Leadership in Higher Education from a Transrelational Perspective both critiques the likely implications of adopting this transrelational form of leadership into a higher educational institution and discusses the implications of not doing so. Although a transrelational approach to leadership might seem daunting for higher education institutions to adopt, is there any other choice? The authors argue that it is inconceivable for institutions founded upon promoting human development as a consequence of research to ignore such research that not only questions the suitability of current leadership practices but also offers a more effective alternative.

: The Universities and Education Today (1962): The Lindsay Memorial Lectures given at the University College of North Staffordshire
First published in 1962, this book comprises lectures given in November 1961 to what was then the University College of North Staffordshire. It deals with the aims, rather than the administrative problems of the Universities, to put at the forefront of the reader's mind the fundamentals of University organisation, structure, and development. Butterfield has in mind the needs of undergraduates, and tries to concentrate attention on that electric contact between teacher and student for the sake of which all our elaborate educational machinery exists. He examines the position of the teacher, the status and function of an academic profession, and the relations between teaching and research.

Professors as Academic Leaders: Expectations, Enacted Professionalism and Evolving Roles
What is the role of a professor? How does someone achieve professorial status? What do non-professorial colleagues think about professors? How do professors themselves perceive their roles? What are the bases of these perceptions, and what are their implications for the professoriate's evolving role both within the neoliberal university, and in the approaching post-neoliberal era? Professors as Academic Leaders draws on a wealth of data not only to explore what it is to be a professor but also to consider how professors are perceived by others. Linda Evans presents the findings from four studies, with a combined data base of over 2,400 questionnaire responses and over 90 interview transcripts, and discusses their implications for the future development of the UK-based professoriate and academic leadership in higher education. She analyses the concepts of leadership and of professionalism, and illustrates how, in trying to meet people's expectations of them, professors' 'enacted', professionalism is shaped by the professionalism that others demand of them. Professorship is revealed to be demanding, at times stressful and morale-sapping, and at times exhilarating and rewarding. Linda Evans questions whether universities are making best use of their most senior academics, and proposes ways of refashioning professorship.

The School Principal: Visionary Leadership and Competent Management
Over the past two decades, efforts to improve schools have significantly modified role expectations for principals. Today, school-level administrators are expected to be both visionary leaders and competent managers. Based on the conviction that administration is an amalgam of leadership and management, The School Principal emphasizes the need for practitioners to apply conceptual skills to make what to do decisions, to apply technical skills to make how to do decisions, and to apply relational skills to engage in democratic decision making. Kowalski frames the book with a discussion of the nature of schools, the roles of principals, and their need to improve schools. The book then provides a balanced treatment of leadership and management, covering issues of personal behavior, instructional leadership, relationship building issues, finances, facilities, personnel management, pupil services, and maintaining safe schools. The text closes with discussion of the vital aspects of practice for contemporary principals, addressing problem solving, collaborative change strategies, and personal commitment to being a principal. Special Features: Vignettes introduce the subject matter in the context of common challenges faced by practitioners. Knowledge-Based Questions and Skill-Based Activities prompt readers to engage with and reflect on the chapter content. The School Principal aligns with the Educational Leadership Consortium Council (ELCC) Standards. Treating principals as concurrently visionary leaders and competent managers, this excellent text addresses the needs of aspiring and practicing principals, providing the tools to build effective and efficient schools.

Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching: Pearson New International Edition
Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, 6e,the leading Educational Technology text on the market, introduces the concept of Technology Integration, shows pre-service teachers how to plan for Technology Integration, and offers them the opportunity to practice Technology Integration when designing curriculum to support and shape learning. Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, 6e presents a comprehensive technology integration framework built on both research and proven classroom practices. The Technology Integration Planning Model (TIP Model) shows teachers how to create an environment in which technology can effectively enhance learning. This sixth edition shows how to incorporate the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Tech-PACK) framework into the TIP Model. Carefully-selected examples and exercises in each chapter encourage teachers to reflect on their practice as they develop the insights, knowledge, and skills they need to integrate technology into content area curricula. Using hundreds of lesson examples and recommended resources, the text balances the theory-based why and the practical how of using technology to support and shape the future of technology in education. The goal of this edition is for teachers to see more clearly their role in shaping the future of technology in education. This book illustrates that great education means employing technologies to fulfill the vision they make possible: a worldwide social network and a global community that learns and grows together.

Managing Change in Education: Individual and Organizational Perspectives
'This is an interestingly eclectic selection of material on the management of change in education' - Managing Schools Today A key theme of this book is that change is not just about the creation of new policies and procedures to implement external mandates. It is also about the strategies by which individuals respond to the impact of structural and cultural change; about personal change as much as organizational change; about the place of values in framing organizational form and culture, as well as those which look at individual and group responses to the pressures which they feel. This is a companion volume to Managing the Effective School edited by Margaret Preedy. It is the set book for The Open University course Managing Schools: Challenge and Response(E326)

Educational Leadership as a Culturally-Constructed Practice: New Directions and Possibilities
This edited book collection disrupts received notions of educational leadership, culture and diversity as currently portrayed in practice and theory. It draws on compelling studies of educational leadership from the global north and south, as well as from a range of ethnic, religious and gendered perspectives and critical research approaches. In so doing, the book powerfully challenges contemporary leadership discourses of diversity that reproduce essentialising leadership practices, binary divisions and asymmetrical power relations. The various chapters contest and move beyond exhortations for leadership in increasingly diverse societies; revealing through their rich portraits of the hybridity of leadership practice, the shallowness of diversity discourses that are framed as something we (the culturally homogenous) leader do to (heterogenous) `others'. The volume is more than critique. Instead it offers readers new directions and possibilities through which to understand, theorise and practise educational leadership in the twenty first century. In portraying leading as a relational practice in contexts of cultural hybridity (Blackmore, this volume), it extends critical theories for and of leadership practice, examining the intersectionality between leadership and a range of social categories, and challenging notions of leadership as a singular construct. Compelling research narratives reveal educational leadership practice as nuanced, temporal, site specific and prefigured by traditions and cultural understandings that reach beyond a simplification of educational leadership as understood through unitary lenses of race, gender or ethnicity. This book is essential reading for academics and students of educational leadership and management, as well as administrators.

Alternatives to Privatizing Public Education and Curriculum: Festschrift in Honor of Dale D. Johnson
Through conversations in honor of Dale D. Johnson, this book takes a critical view of the monoculture in curriculum and policy that has developed in education with the increase of federal funding and privatization of services for public education, and examines the shift from public interest and control to private and corporate shareholder hegemony. Most states' educational responsibilities-assessment of constituents, curriculum development, and instructional protocols-are increasingly being outsourced to private enterprises in an effort to reduce state budgets. These enterprises have been given wide access to state resources such as public data from state-sanctioned testing results, field-testing rights to public schools, and financial assistance. Chapter authors challenge this paradigm as well as the model that has set growing premiums on accountability and performance measures. Connecting common impact between the standards movement and the privatization of education, this book lays bare the repercussions of high-stakes accountability coupled with increasing privatization. Winner of The Society of Professors of Education Book Award (2018)

Issues in Education and Technology: Policy Guidelines and Strategies
This volume provides policy guidelines and strategies for those who have to make critical decisions about the use of technology in education systems and institutions. To fully understand the implications of any technology for education and national development, we need to explore its growth and impact. This book explores the socio-economic, political and cultural implications of new technology and looks at the critical issues it throws up. It also looks at the policies and strategies suggested for decision-makers. The work concentrates on four broad areas in which technology can have the greatest influence and impact on education. These areas are: access and equity; management and efficiency; pedagogy and quality; and human resource development. It explores the current and potential role of technology in each of these areas, within an appropriate historical, socio-cultural and economic framework. This analysis seeks to promote a better understanding of the key issues, and help readers to relate the issues to their own experience and thus to improve their decision-making.

Urban Education: A Model for Leadership and Policy
Many factors complicate the education of urban students. Among them have been issues related to population density; racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity; poverty; racism (individual and institutional); and funding levels. Although urban educators have been addressing these issues for decades, placing them under the umbrella of urban education and treating them as a specific area of practice and inquiry is relatively recent. Despite the wide adoption of the term a consensus about its meaning exists at only the broadest of levels. In short, urban education remains an ill-defined concept. This comprehensive volume addresses this definitional challenge and provides a 3-part conceptual model in which the achievement of equity for all -- regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity - is an ideal that is central to urban education. The model also posits that effective urban education requires attention to the three central issues that confronts all education systems (a) accountability of individuals and the institutions in which they work, (b) leadership, which occurs in multiple ways and at multiple levels, and (c) learning, which is the raison d'etre of education. Just as a three-legged stool would fall if any one leg were weak or missing, each of these areas is essential to effective urban education and affects the others.

The Market for Academics
This book addresses academic labor markets in three countries: France, Germany, and the United States. The management of faculty careers is a critical issue in university autonomy, and in many countries recent reforms have increasingly addressed this area. Musselin's exhaustive empirical research on academic job hiring practices and faculty career patterns included over 200 interviews with faculty members and administrators concerning two disciplines: history and math. Each of the countries has very different historical traditions with regard to how peers recruit their colleagues within the academy. Using what is known as an economics of quality comparative approach, she sheds new light on faculty worklife. The author's focus on the criteria of evaluation in academic hiring decisions is a unique contribution and one that should stimulate the current debates on higher education reforms.

Recognizing and Serving Low-Income Students in Higher Education: An Examination of Institutional Policies, Practices, and Culture
Written for administrators, faculty, and staff in Higher Education who are working with low income and first-generation college students, Recognizing and Serving Low-Income Students in Higher Education uncovers organizational biases that prevent post-secondary institutions from adequately serving these students. This volume offers practical guidance for adopting new or revised policies and practices that have the potential to help these students thrive. This contributed volume is based on empirical studies that specifically examine the policies and practices of postsecondary institutions in the United States, England, and Canada. The contributing authors argue that discussions of diversity will be enriched by a better understanding of how institutional policies and practices affect low-income students. Unlike most studies on this topic, this volume focuses on institutional rather than federal, state and public policy. Institutional policies and practices have been largely ignored and this volume lifts the veil on processes that have remained hidden.
