My First Year In Purgatory
My First Year In Purgatory is a memoir with illustrations, about my adventures and insights as a Gen Xer teaching in a crumbling inner city school district. In it, I lead two semi-functional lives: embattled educator by day -whose students make Damien from the Omen look like a lightweight, and urban adventurer by night. I witness teachers driven out of classrooms by students they can't control, bullies given free reign to torment the weak, chaos that makes learning nearly impossible, and administrators who sweep discipline under the rug. Weekends, I scour art openings, cafes, bars and the Internet for romance, meaning, and escape. As I struggle through my first year, I begin to suspect that that all those movies and books about the dedicated teacher who won over those tough kids are a myth; and that there is a crisis in discipline that can't be solved by lone heroes.

University Leadership: The Role of the Chief Executive
There is a myth that university leaders have been reborn as chief executives. The authors of University Leadership argue that the reality is both more complex and more ambiguous. Although the managerial and political pressures on university leaders have increased (as have expectations of the institutional leadership they can provide) there is substantial evidence of significant continuity - not simply in who vice chancellors are and what they do - but also in how they conceive their roles; and the donnish monopoly of the top jobs in universities remains virtually unchallenged despite the development of mass higher education. This is a balanced empirical and theoretical study of the present state of institutional leadership in higher education. It draws upon the authors' own research and other international studies, contextualizes the roles of university leaders, and is studded with fascinating data and vignettes about their backgrounds, ideas and day-to-day practices. It is essential reading for university leaders and managers, senior academics, policy-makers, and scholars of the policy and practice of higher education.

Bullying Hurts: Teaching Kindness Through Read Alouds and Guided Conversations
"We believe focused read aloud experiences with carefully selected children's literature followed by guided conversations is one way you can create a climate in your classroom, school, or district where bullying is not an accepted or rewarded behavior. A climate where an individual's humanity and human dignity trump any difference(s) and kindness is the order of the day." -Lester Laminack and Reba Wadsworth Bullying Hurts is not your same-old anti-bullying guide. Lester Laminack and Reba Wadsworth show how the read aloud, a familiar and proven instructional technique, can be used as a powerful way to neutralize bullying behaviors, create community in the classroom, and help you meet the Common Core State Standards at the same time. Recent research shows that punishing students who bully is not enough, that we must begin every child's education by establishing relationship skills and building empathy among students. Lester and Reba recommend a series of read aloud books that focus on our shared humanity and can be used on day one of Kindergarten and throughout the elementary years. They help you support the development of children's insight and compassion. Bullying Hurts guides students toward increased understandings about bullying behavior with a framework of five recommended read-alouds and accompanying lessons that help you: define and discuss the important lessons about bullying embedded in each book develop literacy skills and strategies, conversation, critical thinking, character analysis, and reflection connect read aloud experiences to the anchor standards for reading in the Common Core. Bullying Hurts does more than help children gain the insights and language needed to confront and neutralize the behaviors of bullies. It convinces us that by working together, we really can prevent bullying.

New Directions in Professional Higher Education
This book exemplifies the growing involvement of universities in professional education at its highest level. It also demonstrates the increasing importance of education for the professions in the work of universities. It contains a wealth of practical examples and ideas about how universities can respond to the changing needs of students' initial professional training, continuing professional development and lifelong learning. At the heart of the book is a series of analytical case studies of developing practices that respond to the challenges to higher education at the start of the new millennium. These chapters address important themes in developing professional HE: partnership, independent learning, reflective practice, new technologies, intranets, world wide web, distance learning, the international dimension, work readiness, assessment and standards. Many of the case studies test out ideas in action. The result is a valuable handbook for practitioners of professional education in HE and an important resource for staff and educational developers and higher education managers.

Total Quality Management and the Schoolaa
The management team within the school are currently faced with a great deal of pressure to achieve a range of performance expectations in a climate of increasing uncertainty, financial stringency and competition. Total quality management is a framework and set of practical resources for managing organizations in the 1990s. Based on sound principles and a strong body of experience, total quality management provides a school based management team with the tools they need to become highly effective in meeting the goals of their stakeholders, and in creating a place that teachers want to work in. This book is the first to fully examine the practice of total quality management in the context of schooling. It looks, for instance, at the nature of a school's strategic management in the context of growing competition and expectations for performance; and at the positioning of the school in terms of vision and mission. It considers the setting of outrageous or exceptional goals to create momentum and alignment and explores the nature of high performing teams within the school. It discusses commitment building as part of the new quality culture and involving stakeholders in the daily management of the school. It is practical and well-illustrated with case vignettes and examples of total quality management in action. It is based on the experience of two senior academic practitioners who have both carried out extensive work in school management and development.

The Virtuous Circle: Why Creativity and Cultural Education Count
We live in the age of creativity. It is integral to everything we do. It inspires innovation, improving our environment, our products, our businesses and the quality of our lives. The UK has become a creative nation, renowned throughout the world. This book argues that cultural and creative activities should form a vital part of the everyday lives of young people - that they are academically, physically, socially and emotionally enriching. Encompassing archaeology, architecture and the built environment, archives, craft, dance, design, digital arts, drama and theatre, film and cinemas, galleries, heritage, libraries, literature, live performance, museums, music, poetry and the visual arts, John Sorrell, Paul Roberts and Darren Henley offer a blueprint for a renewed approach to cultural and creative education that will be required reading whether you are a parent, a practitioner, an educator or a policymaker. Far too important to be regarded as entertaining optional extras, creativity and cultural education matter.
