Turning a School Around: Key Considerations for Real Success
Currently in education everyone is debating what is required to turn around struggling campuses. Some argue the need for additional programs, some suggest merit pay to bring in and retain the most effective teachers. What this book will argue is that is rests solely on the shoulders of the principal. As the book will discuss, it is the principals job to hire and train quality teachers to ensure students receive the high quality instruction they deserve. In order for principals to accomplish this task, there are certain aspects of instructional leadership they must understand and be able to put into practice. Principals first and foremost must truly understand instruction. Principals must understand how to evaluate students and teachers through formative assessment. Principals have to find ways to get into classrooms as opposed to finding ways that keep them out. Finally, principals must understand data well enough that they can truly hear the story the data is telling. It is through these aspects of instructional leadership that principals are able turn campuses around.

Equity Visits: A New Approach to Supporting Equity-Focused School and District Leadership
Because equity and instruction are inextricably bound Why are equity visits such a critical first step to increasing opportunity and access for our under-served students? Because they take instructional rounds to a new level, providing a powerful lens for investigating the intersections of equity and instruction. After all, how can we possibly deliver equitable learning experiences, opportunities, and outcomes for our students, without first pinpointing problems of practice? That's where Equity Visits will prove absolutely indispensable to district and school administrators. It details how to combine a strong focus on instruction with explicit, intentional efforts to address systemic inequities. Inside you'll find A range of data collection activities and tools to target central issues of equity in your school Clear guidelines on how to investigate the ways instructional practices, structures, and beliefs lead to inequitable educational experiences-and how these are often masked in the day-to-day life of schools and districts A frank discussion of how to make race and racism an explicit part of investigating and addressing educational inequities Voices of school and district leaders who have taken crucial first steps to become equity warriors Recommendations on how to develop policies, initiatives, and practices to confront those inequities Few dispute that instructional improvement must be a central focus of educational leadership, but for too long achieving educational equity has been absent from the conversation. Here is your opportunity to ensure equity occupy a central spot in data collection and analysis, and be explicitly discussed at all levels of your school or district organization. In short, essential reading and doing for all administrators!

Words Matter: Embracing the Power of Conversation
This book delves into the power of the conversation and the words we use. There is a tremendous need for people to be more thoughtful and careful with their words. Electronic transactions tend to be shorter and quicker and in many cases, delivered without much thought as to the impact of the message and the words. As soon as the words are spoken or written and received, it is too late to take them back. In addition, most conflicts and challenging situations could be avoided, minimized, and/or deescalated with an effective conversation. Effective and meaningful conversations do not come naturally but it is a skill that can be learned through education and practice. This book will walk you through effective principles and practices that can be used to enhance the probability of a good outcome from a challenging situation and conversation. The words we choose do make a difference and this fact needs to be at the forefront of our thought process as we enter a face to face conversation, compose an email, and send a text or place a social media post. This book will provide the tools necessary to begin a practice of meaningful and effective conversations.

Making Sense of Problems in Primary Headship
Managing problems has always been a major responsibility of headship, but a substantial number of primary heads now regard their role as especially problematic. With a steadily expanding set of responsibilities and an increasingly demanding set of constituencies to satisfy, the problems which impinge upon primary headship seem set to become ever more challenging. While media sources regularly report increasingly onerous headteacher workloads, ever more rigorous accountability and responsibility demands and over-stretched school budgets, there has been very little empirical research into the problematic nature of modern primary headship. By using evidence from interviews with seventy primary headteachers, this book highlights the most serious problems experienced by primary heads. In particular, the management of school finance and premises and relationships with a range of other people involved in the life and work of the school are shown to be recurring historical issues in primary headship. This book is a response to these problems and draws upon research on organizational value theory, micropolitics and symbolism as well as school leader succession and socialisation studies. By offering a set of conceptual tools to enhance analysis of problem causes and identification of relevant management strategies this text will prove a valuable resource for researchers and leaders in education.

Designed to allow readers to learn from, rather than copy, the legal and educational systems in these volumes, the books are designed to generate thought and conversation on how education can be improved around the world. By having chapter authors, leading academicians in the home countries, follow the same template so it can be easier to compare similarities and differences, thereby helping to make the book user friendly. The value of these books is that they should help to enhance international awareness of the similarities and advantages associated with bringing together knowledge from various countries concerning education law. Volume 4, encompassing Selected Nations in Africa and the Americas, namely Brazil, Canada, Mauritius, United States, South Africa and Venezuela, consists of detailed analysis of educational law and systems in these representative countries so researchers and students there and elsewhere can learn from one another.

Facing the Challenges: How Principals Can Survive and Thrive in Today's Schools
Leading a public school today, regardless of its size, configuration, or location is an undertaking of immense responsibilities while confronting many challenges along with the rewards associated with watching children grow and learn. The leadership role rests with the school's principal. Rarely do they receive much on going professional development or recognition and praise even though their students find learning to be pleasurable and exciting in safe and secure classrooms. The book is intended to serve them as a reliable field manual. It provides them with a clear exposition on how to incorporate and exercise morale and servant leadership to their school community. The recommendations and suggestions provided throughout the book are based on years of experience observing the mix of social, emotional, and intellectual activities immersed in all formal schooling. What is proposed is supported by contemporary leadership and learning theories contributed by the social sciences. Thus, the purpose of this book is to enable principals to navigate safely through the many challenges accompanying today's educational reforms. It will require principals to exercise courage and tenacity, along with a high degree of collaboration with all those with a stake in the public service they pledge to provide.

School of Errors: Rethinking School Safety in America
School of Errors establishes another voice in the discussion of how to promote safe schools. It challenges the unchecked expansion of school fortification and questions the realized benefit of inter-agency collaboration during a sentinel event. This book offers an alternative to traumatizing simulations by providing clear options for improving school safety by the empirically-proven effective measures of leakage detection (preventive) and sensemaking (reactive). School of Errors restores the scientific method to school safety and clears a path through the media rhetoric fogging this vital topic.

Evaluating the Superintendent: The Process of Collaborative Compromises and Critical Considerations
As local elections and other occurrences can transform a board and its direction, having a performance review cycle to ensure that all board members understand the philosophy undergirding the superintendent's evaluation is critical to ensuring that all members of the governing board are operating within a similar framework and purpose as they approach the superintendent's evaluation cycle. Acknowledging that superintendents have the potential to grow in their professional capacity, revisiting the philosophical underpinnings of the evaluation over time ensures that the process does not remain static. Each chapter within this text is designed to develop the basis for understanding the superintendent's evaluation process to create opportunities for an open and continuous dialogue between superintendents and school boards. This book will support those charged with leading and governing public schools to implement effective evaluations for both school boards and superintendents that provide an objective and summative collection of the superintendent's annual performance and his/her relative impact on targeted success within a given school year.

School Tax Elections: Planning for Success in the New Normal
Whether it is requests for bricks and mortar or more operating money, each election type and context is unique with no guarantee that a set of campaign strategies successful in one district will not fail in another community. If successful campaigns were not such a delicate balance of science and art, the key to success would have long since been discovered, resulting in significantly more school districts winning at the ballot box. As members of the baby-boom generation collectively watch their last child receive a diploma from our nation's public schools, passing school tax elections is going to be even more difficult, promising tougher battles with the electorate and tighter margins between success and failure. School Tax Elections represents a marriage of research and successful practice, presenting a comprehensive planning model for school leaders preparing for and conducting school tax elections. Information presented emphasizes systems and strategies rather than specific campaign tactics, allowing school leaders to elevate their thinking to a more comprehensive and long-range vision of election planning. The authors provide school leaders with important resources to guide their planning and execution of school tax elections.

Evaluating School Superintendents: A Guide to Employing Fair and Effective Processes and Practices
This book provides guidelines to Boards of Education and the members of communities to conduct a high-quality, research-based evaluation of their school superintendent. It also includes examples of contemporary practices of evaluating superintendents practiced across the United States. In exploring the important issue of evaluation for the superintendent the complexities and aspects of the process that make it unique are highlighted. Issues addressed include: Existing state policies that require/govern superintendent evaluations & their impact on practice Evaluation models that should be considered for evaluating superintendents The consequences of not having a clear set of policies/procedures Determining the major roles and responsibilities upon which the superintendent's evaluation should be based Documenting the superintendent's job performance The policy, procedures, and training required for board members to successfully implement a superintendent evaluation system The evaluation process proposed ensures fairness to the superintendent as well as providing accountability to the school district and community. The focus of all evaluations should be on improved performance. Evaluation is a means to an end. The ultimate purpose of superintendent evaluation is improving individual performance in order to ensure quality services and programs to students.

The Governance Core: School Boards, Superintendents, and Schools Working Together
This book examines how local education governance- school boards in collaboration with district and school leadership- could, in every district, become an exemplar of highly effective decision-making, leadership and action. The authors believe that most trustees (board members) want to make a difference in the lives of students, and to improve the district and the system and as a whole. Their vision is of a governance system, school board and superintendent; working together as a cohesive, unified team with a common vision driven by a shared moral imperative. This is a dynamic, powerful role for school boards. ?Education cannot be expected to solve all of our social ills, but it is increasingly clear that it is the one social institution that has the potential to make a major difference for humanity in a troubled world. While it has often been shown that districts and boards don't have close working relationships, this book takes a different view. We go to the core, basic foundation of understanding local efficacy: the mindset of high performing trustees and superintendents carrying out the critical function of governance. We believe that school boards are vastly underutilized at precisely the time when they are most needed. We hold another fundamental premise which we will position in the course of this book: the vast majority of school board members want to improve the public education system. Finally, decisions are made within a political context. Our main goal in this book is to spell out what good governance consists of at the local district level so that well-intended politics can combine with the governance core to produce education results never before seen.

The Ten-Minute Principal: Free Up Your Time to Focus on Leadership
The purpose of The Ten-Minute Principal is to provide support and help principals and assistant principals develop a student-centered approach to learning. My book will show the magic of how 10-minute chunks of time can help an administrator plan, reflect, and take intentional action on many of the critical parts of being an effective leader. In this book, I'll provide aspiring and current principals with a series of 10-minute opportunities to improve the quality of their work with staff and students. The first chapter will review elements of school leadership including research, and an explanation of the 10-minute framework. In addition, I will discuss the importance of setting priorities allowing administrators to choose focal points their school needs most. Throughout the book, I will reference and intertwine core leadership elements with ideas presented in The 10-Minute Principal. The principal's position is critical for school effectiveness. Great schools have great principals who in turn hire and maintain excellent teachers. But today, in America turnover is high for the principal's position. Many who are hired for the position do not have experience, but all who are hired are expected to perform at high levels, often without a formal mentor program. I have mentored dozens of principals, written The Principal's Leadership Sourcebook published by Scholastic, (2007) and most importantly, I am a principal with over eighteen years of experience. I know how to find success, and I understand why many fail. My eighteen years of experience along with current research on school leadership will serve as the bedrock for The 10-Minute Principal. Busy educators need easy-to-access ideas, strategies, and stories to help find success for themselves, their staff, and students.
