Caring Leadership in Turbulent Times: Tackling Neoliberal Education Reform
This book analyzes education reform through the eyes of those entrenched in the process - policy makers, administrators, middle managers, principals, and teachers - in the context of care. A senior administrator, who participated in the implementation of an unprecedented series of reforms that flattened the education system in a Canadian province and rebuilt it with a new mandate, examines learning from the shortcomings of the past and provides a critical enquiry that can help determine the success or failure of future reform efforts by shedding light on the obstacles to avoid, problems to correct, and methods to embrace in order to overcome hurt and disappointment in a turbulent environment and foster more caring and effective educational organizations. Few attempts have been made to write a book about women's work from the perspective of those in senior leadership roles in education; others have written about it but not experienced it firsthand. This book illuminates the controversial debate between women and gender in education and challenges assumptions about equity and the caring and democratic nature of education. It contributes to a broader understanding and knowledge of the complexities of leadership work within education, which in turn can lead to improvement in professional relationships as well as organizational effectiveness. The book contains enlightening and compelling stories about the unique and shared experiences of people navigating turbulence within an organization. Author Mary Green draws on her career spent teaching and learning to provide a unique Canadian perspective and context. She offers a rigorous self, social, historical, and political reflection of educators, who despite experiencing particular challenges, draw purpose from faith in the possibilities and potential of more caring practice in education. The content will prove useful to those committed to infusing more humanity into work in education with reference to individuals, institutions, and the social and political challenges in the field. Specifically, this book is relevant to graduate students in faculties of education, policy makers, principals, other administrators, and organizational leaders. Universal issues of power and politics reveal interconnections between the personal and the global workplace, underscoring the importance of care in the workplace. Series Editors: Jeffrey S. Brooks, University of Idaho, USA; Denise E. Armstrong, Brock University, USA; Ira Bogotch, Florida Atlantic University, USA; Sandra Harris, Lamar University, USA;Whitney H. Sherman, Virginia Commonwealth University, USA; George Theoharis, Syracuse University, USA.

School Leadership in a Diverse Society: Helping Schools Prepare All Students for Success
The purpose of this work is to broaden the scholarly dialogue in educational leadership and to address the changing role of the American school principal in the twenty-first century with regard to increasing diversity in the United States. This book seeks to provide theoretical and practical insight into the role of school principals dealing with an ever-increasing multicultural student population. The authors cover an array of issues that they believe are critical in order for the twenty-first century school principal to be effective and relevant. A primary inquiry that needs to be made is: Are school leaders taking seriously the increasing social and cultural diversity in their schools? It is the school principal who sets the tone for the school culture and who provides the vision as to the direction of the organization. The authors endeavor to help scholars and practitioners have a better understanding of the importance of the diversity of their students, and to give them the tools to appropriately lead schools in ways that ensure all students, regardless of their life circumstances and status, are provided a school climate that promotes high academic achievement and a sense of belonging.

Critical Small Schools: Beyond Privatization in New York City Urban Educational Reform
Critical Small Schools: Beyond Privatisation in New York City Urban Educational Reform features the most current empirical research about the successes and challenges of the small schools movement and the implications of such for urban public educational policy. Situated in a climate of hierarchical reform, many of the principles of the original small schools movement-which are rooted in community participation, innovative pedagogies and assessment, and equity and social justice-have become obscured by an educational agenda that emphasises topdown mandates and standards-based reform. With the increased popularity and the rapid proliferation of small schools, the emphasis on `size only' has resulted in a bifurcation of the small schools movement; on one end are the small schools which have embraced the democratic, participatory, and self-governing nature of the original movement, while on the other end are schools that have simply reduced their size without rethinking school structures and practices. This book distinguishes the small schools featured and researched in this volume from schools that are simply small and labels them critical small schools. By documenting the practices that take place in various critical small schools in New York City, we show how these schools have narrowed the achievement gap and increased graduation and college acceptance rates. Although smallness is an essential feature in the design of these schools, it is certainly not the only one and this volume illuminates the other elements that contribute to these schools' successes and shortcomings. Critical Small Schools also challenges the recent emphasis on charter schools as a panacea for urban educational reform. By featuring research about the inner workings of public schools, this volume challenges this new direction that steers successful school development away from public education. Moreover, as every site is fraught with some tension, Critical Small Schools not only offers glimpses into intellectually vibrant and democratic learning communities, but also acknowledges that these concepts are not static and necessitate continual reflection and renewal. At this pivotal moment in educational reform, this volume provides keen insight into the challenges and possibilities of the small schools movement, and is indispensable for anyone interested in comprehensive public school reform.

The Futures of School Reform
The Futures of School Reform represents the culminating work of a three-year discussion among national education leaders convened by the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Based on the recognition that current education reform efforts have reached their limits, the volume maps out a variety of bold visions that push the boundaries of our current thinking. Taken together, these visions identify the leverage points for generating dramatic change and highlight critical trade-offs among different courses of action. The goal of this book is not to present a menu of options. Rather, it is to surface contrasting assumptions, tensions, constraints, and opportunities, so that together we can better understand-and act on-the choices that lie before us.

Superintendent Evaluation Handbook
Superintendent evaluation is a unique process that is often neglected but critical in this era of accountability. This invaluable guide provides an overview of the entire process, including: crafting board policy, criteria for good policy, and prototype policy. It identifies the unique challenges posed by the evaluation process and describes a three-tiered model of evaluation. This model is anchored in the professional standards for superintendency established by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the National School Boards Association (NSBA) Key Work of School Boards, the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards, and the National Technology Standards for School Administrators. Numerous sample forms are included to assist school districts in creating a customized evaluation protocol to enhance performance. Suggestions on next steps for the reader conclude the book and additional resources are described in the annotated bibliography. This handbook will be of interest to superintendents, school board members, and professionals involved in the development and support of superintendents.

Making Good on the Promise: Student Affairs Professionals With Disabilities approaches disability from a sociocultural perspective that views disability as one of many possible social identities. Building on recent work related to implementing Universal Design in higher education, Making Good on the Promise shifts the focus from postsecondary students to staff and faculty. Although the book specifically addresses professionals in the field of student affairs, Making Good on the Promise provides insights and suggestions that are applicable to faculty and staff members working throughout higher education. Beginning with an overview of the wider disability movement, Making Good on the Promise then aims dead center to the heart of the experience of student affairs professionals with disabilities, to the curricular changes needed in preparation programs for that profession, to the role and appropriate action needed by allies, and to resources that all can use in the education of self and others.

Many different perspectives are represented: studying the school manager (Glass, Kowalski, and Glasman), minorities in the profession (Ortiz and Brunner), and the radical decentralization of the British school system under Thatch and Major (Campell, Powell, and Parker). Legal positions and collective bargaining are also discussed to great effect. Professors, public school educators, and policymakers should all find this book useful due to the critical nature of the superintendency.

Leadership and School Boards: Guarding the Trust in an Era of Community Engagement
School boards shape society through systems of education. They choose who leads the system and how educators are selected to lead classrooms. They approve the allocation of millions of dollars every year. As leaders, the school board determines how their community defines the values, resources, and belief systems that together form the democratic mosaic of our times. Embedded within this knowledge are timeless foundations that have carried us from the origins of school boards to our current systems; these are the keys to community engagement, and these are the keys to empowered and strong school systems. This book is about the remarkable and unique purpose of school boards. It is not a book about abolition, or drastic reform. It explains clearly that school boards were established as part of the foundation for a strong democratic society and encourages everyone involved with school systems to guard that foundation. School boards embody the most immediate principles of democracy. This is an exciting book, appropriate for our times, focused on the powerful leadership necessary in the school board, and the potential to deliver ever-improving results through consistent and deliberate governance.

Between 2002 and 2016, the federal government, state governments, and school districts undertook unprecedented measures to improve the lowest-performing schools. This book draws on dozens of actual examples to illustrate the wide range of interventions adopted over this time period. Among the initiatives examined in depth are efforts by states to provide technical assistance to schools and districts, offer students educational choices, engage communities in school improvement, take over low-performing schools and districts, create special state-run school districts, and close failing schools. Also discussed are district-initiated measures, including programs to standardize instruction, innovative approaches to raising student achievement, and restructuring of district operations. The book concludes with an assessment of 15 years of turnaround initiatives and recommendations based on lessons learned over this time period.

Working through Whiteness: Examining White Racial Identity and Profession with Pre-service Teachers
White educators comprise between 85-92 percent of the current teaching force in the United States, yet in the race toward leaving no child behind, contemporary educational research often invests significant time and energy looking for ways to reach students who represent difference without examining the nature of those who do the work of educating the nation's public school children. Educational research that has looked at racial identity is often void of earnest discussion of the identity of the teachers, how that identity impacts teacher beliefs about students and families, and ultimately how teachers frame their understanding of the profession. This book takes readers on a journey to explore the nature of pre-service teachers' narratives as a means of better understanding racial identity and the way teachers enter the profession. Through a case study analysis approach, Examining White Racial Identity and Profession with Pre-service Teachers examines the nature of white racial identity as seen through the narratives of nine pre-service teachers as well as his own struggles with racial identity. This text draws on racial identity, critical race theory, and discourse and narrative analysis to reveal how participants in the study used discourse structures to present beliefs about race and their own understandings and ultimately how the teachers' narratives display underdeveloped understandings of their choices to become educators. Fasching-Varner also critically examines his own racial identity auto-ethnographically, and ultimately proposes a new, non-developmental model for thinking about white racial identity. This text aims to help teacher educators and teachers to work against the privileges of whiteness so as to better engage students in culturally relevant ways.

Focused Leadership: Instruction, Learning, and School Improvement
Building-level and central office administrators must be both instructional and learning leaders. Instructional leadership means focusing on teacher behaviors that support student learning and helping teachers make good decisions about their own behaviors in the classroom. Learning leadership focuses on the learning itself-how students absorb, process, and retain information. This guide will assist administrators in their quest to be more effective at what they do; this is meant not as a prescriptive document, but rather a baseline from which to grow. This guide provides information about the intricacies of the teaching and learning process and how these elements are linked. Readers are encouraged to use the guide as a foundation, as a starting point to expand their own instructional and learning leadership. They should modify, add to, and personalize the guide as they challenge themselves to grow. The guide encompasses many components, all of which are important. It should help administrators to know what to look for during an observation, and, perhaps even more important, topics of conversations to have with teachers. Transformational leadership begins with understanding teaching and learning as well as having the ability to generate quality conversations.

Women in the Superintendency: Discarded Leadership
The percentage of women in the superintendency remained stagnant over 80 years of the last century and has only increased slightly, to just fewer than 14% of the public school superintendents in the U.S. today. In other words, the glass ceiling still exists. The persistent reasons for lack of change are gender prejudice and gender structuring - frequently referred to as sexism. The selection and promotion process for the school district CEO is conducted by school boards and search groups, the majority of whom are white men who tend to select other white men to carry on the heritage of the school superintendency. Why do these low numbers still exist and what can be done to promote change? These and other questions are addressed in Women in the Superintendency: Leadership Denied. This book presents the essential ethic for women's leadership, identifies the ideologies from which challenges to women's leadership emanate, provides case studies to illustrate gender prejudice and gender structuring, and finishes with ways for women to strengthen their leadership to reduce the 'discarding' effect. This book will be of interest to school leaders, boards of education, and superintendents as well as educational leadership preparatory programs and women's studies programs.

The Hidden Principalship: A Practical Handbook for New and Experienced Principals
The Hidden Principalship is a straightforward, practical handbook for principals in the job or for professors to use as a guide for principal instructional programming. Becoming a principal is similar to purchasing a house. It is an investment. A HUGE investment! Consider this book as your inspection of the principalship. As others are admiring the paint colors, this text examines the foundation. This book reviews issues of power, change and culture, but unlike the traditional ways that these and other topics may have been previously presented to you. This text will expose the cracks in the foundation so you can see them and decide how you will handle them. (And at a lower price than any home inspection ever cost). This text looks to discover thinking patterns that underlay the work and then provide a clear, practical approach for not only the issue at hand, but the great thinker behind the issue. In addition, the text also lends itself to college classrooms, as it has case studies for each chapter, which are meant to kindle conversation surrounding the topic. Furthermore, the sections Try It and Don't Try It give further testimony to the practical application of the information. This book has a practical approach to leadership theory. Each chapter has a Practical Advice section which provides solid guidance for future use.
