Developing Educational Technology at an Urban Community College
This book uses a mix of personal narratives, anecdotal evidence, and research-based findings to tell the story of a small, urban community college's efforts to develop and nurture a Community of Practice (CoP) that would galvanize the campus' adoption of Educational Technology. Located in one of the poorest congressional district in the United States, Hostos Community College, a Hispanic-serving institution and part of the City University of New York (CUNY), has a unique history rooted in activism, advocacy, and community outreach, and has built a reputation for technology innovation. This book is a collection of writing from faculty and staff members whose decades of experience integrating technology into the classroom pre-dates many of the official initiatives now in place at CUNY.

Leadership in the Context of Religious Institutions: The Case of Benedictine Monasteries
This book explores opportunities and limitations with regard to transferring knowledge and tools from the corporate world to manage monasteries or other types of religious institutions. To do so, the contributing authors analyze both the ideological and practical implications of employing modern organizational theory in the context of religious institutions, and seek to strike a balance between preserving traditions and promoting modernization. In this regard, they draw on experience gained in the course of long-standing collaborations between religious institutions, such as monasteries, and business and management schools.

The Instructional Soul: Leading Schools with a Spirit of Innovation
The Instructional Soul: Leading Schools with a Spirit of Innovation is about connections It explores a new way of organizing our schools and aligning our curriculum and lessons that is long overdue. What we know with great certainty is that our educational system is comprised of a disconnected assortment of skills, subjects, and departments. What we learn in math has little to do with what we learn in science. Even worse, our students are often disconnected from each other, and our schools are disengaged from their communities. In many ways, school is simply a place where we drop off our kids in kindergarten and pick them up when they are eighteen. This book dares to suggest something different, a system that is fully integrated, aligned, and purposeful. It provides a new framework for how we shape our curriculum, involve our families and communities, and align our work around skills like creativity and confidence in ways that are so unlike what we do now that a revolution may be in order. In the end, that will require bold leadership and a collective search for our souls.

The Viability of Organizations Vol. 1: Decoding the DNA of Organizations
Today's complexity, speed, and need for adaptation are putting organizations under stress. Understanding how organizations function and truly come alive has become a critical competency. And yet, organizations still seem to lack a solid understanding of what constitutes meaningful, viable, and effective organizational structures. Using the Viable System Model (VSM) as a framework, this three-volume compendium volume offers readers a new and comprehensive perspective on organizations and how they function beyond the organizational chart. Moreover, it equips readers with a rigorous methodology for analyzing organizations and addressing deep-seated organizational dysfunctions, while also showing them how to redesign their structures and develop better and more tailor-made solutions. This first volume introduces readers to the VSM and its main components. Readers are taken on a journey, allowing them to rediscover all-too-familiar aspects in the life of their organization and to become aware of the critical success factors for its smooth functioning and long-term viability. In turn, volumes 2 and 3 provide an in-depth introduction to diagnosing and designing organizations with the help of the VSM. For academics, this compendium rediscovers a theoretical perspective that can help them understand macro-structural issues; at the same time, for VSM experts and researchers alike, it resolves many open aspects in the VSM framework.

Traditional public educators in the US have too little information about the free market of schooling, otherwise known as privatization/choice education. As a result, traditional public education colleagues have lost sight of where they are and how they got there. In this primer, educators, parents/caregivers, and policymakers are offered an examination of the forces and factors that undercut traditional public education and an inquiry into the primary purpose and quality instruction that distinguishes traditional public education from free market schooling. Without knowing about the educational misdirection fostered by free market schooling, traditional public education in the US cannot invest in continuous improvement necessary to enrich the futures of all students and our nation's democracy. The time has come for traditional public educators to study how we got out on a limb. This book explores the nature of free market schooling and discusses the information that traditional public educators need to muster a defense of purpose, quality, social justice, and how to think. Practical and theoretical insights throughout this book focus on professional practice in traditional public education as the means by which colleagues can assert excellence on behalf of all students while thwarting the negative impacts of free market schooling.

Multicultural Education in an Age of Globalization: Compelling Issues for Engagement, starts out with a discussion of western colonization of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the residual effects of colonialism in the forms of colonial mindset of power, dominance, and white racial superiority that have continued to challenge the hopes of a peaceful and more harmonious exchange and interaction in the 21st century global communities. Issues such as white privilege and cultural humility are discussed in-depth. Subsequently, the idea of globalization and the concept of global citizenship are also addressed in light of their implications for multicultural education curriculum and practice in the 21st century classrooms. The book identifies and discusses compelling issues that must be carefully addressed as we undertake multicultural education in the 21st century educational setting: whether in the K-`12 or higher education setting. Such issues include Affirmative Action, Gender Equity issues, Religion in the public school setting, and the problem of Poverty in the 21st century societies.

Cultures of Social Justice Leadership: An Intercultural Context of Schools
This book explores our understanding of school leaders' actions as they work to enact a socially just school culture. Including unique case studies from around the globe, the editors and contributors examine whether this work is enhanced or diminished by the context in which the school is placed. While the onus of emphasising social justice is placed on the school leader, they must enact this within the micro/meso/macro context of the school setting. Rich in both the unique stories of these schools and their successes and challenges in the enactment of social justice, these global case studies act as a lens for social justice leadership in a variety of regions and at international levels. The global scale combined with detailed analysis of this book will appeal to scholars of education and social justice as well as school leaders and policy makers.

The Decline in Educational Standards: From a Public Good to a Quasi-Monopoly
The Decline in Educational Standards: From a Public Good to a Quasi-Monopoly is about the commodification of education and the factors that have changed education from a public good into a commodity over the last 50 years. When we look at today's education, we see that academic standards in public education have been declining for decades even as education funding has reached nearly a trillion dollars per year to fund such failed programs as No Child Left Behind and Common Core. Simultaneously, tuition and fees at public universities have increased nearly 2000 percent over the last 30 years, and student loan debt is now a staggering $1.5 trillion. Quite simply, education has become big business. This book examines the various issues associated with the commodification of education, especially neoliberalism and privatized Keynesianism-what they are, how they developed, and how they have affected education and public policy. It argues that neoliberalism and the related socioeconomic shift to debt-based consumerism are at the center of commodification, leading to a significant decline in the exchange value of a college degree. It also argues that we cannot understand the changes in our public and higher education systems without examining the historical, social, economic, and political factors that have essentially created an education system that is significantly different from what it was in the not so distant past.

Politics, Managerialism, and University Governance: Lessons from Hong Kong under China's Rule since 1997
This book explores the interplay between politics, managerialism, and higher education, and the complex linkages between politics and public universities in Hong Kong. Since the mid-20th century, literature on the state, market, and higher education has focused on the state's shifting role from the direct administration to the supervision of higher education, and its increased use of market and managerial principles and techniques to regulate public universities. However, very few studies have addressed the political influences on university governance produced by changing state-university-market relationships, the chancellorship of public universities, or students' and academics' civic engagement with regard to sensitive political issues. The book examines both the positive and problematic outcomes of using market principles and managerialism to reform public higher education; questions the longstanding tradition of university chancellorship; explores the issue of external members holding the majority on university governing boards; probes into the dilemma of either relying on the system or a good chancellor and external members to preserve universities' autonomy and academic freedom; and assesses the cost of students' and academics' civic engagement with regard to politically sensitive issues.

A Little Child Shall Lead Them: A Documentary Account of the Struggle for School Desegregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia
In the twentieth-century struggle for racial equality, there was perhaps no setting more fraught and contentious than the public schools of the American south. In Prince Edward County, Virginia, in 1951, a student strike for better school facilities became part of the NAACP legal campaign for school desegregation. That step ultimately brought this rural, agricultural county to the Supreme Court of the United States as one of five consolidated cases in the historic 1954 ruling, Brown v. Board of Education. Unique among those cases, Prince Edward County took the extreme stance of closing its public school system entirely rather than comply with the desegregation ruling of the Court. The schools were closed for five years, from 1959 to 1964, until the Supreme Court ruling in Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward County ordered the restoration of public education in the county. This historical anthology brings together court cases, government documents, personal and scholarly writings, speeches, and journalism to represent the diverse voices and viewpoints of the battle in Prince Edward County for-and against-educational equality. Providing historical context and contemporary analysis, this book offers a new perspective of a largely overlooked episode and seeks to help place the struggle for public education in Prince Edward County into its proper place in the civil rights era.

Absent from School: Understanding and Addressing Absenteeism
In Absent from School, Gottfried and Hutt offer a comprehensive and timely resource for educators and policy makers seeking to understand the scope, impact, and causes of chronic student absenteeism. The editors present a series of studies by leading researchers from a variety of disciplines that address which students are missing school and why, what roles schools themselves play in contributing to or offsetting patterns of absenteeism, and ways to assess student attendance for purposes of school accountability. The contributors examine school-based initiatives that focus on a range of issues, including transportation, student health, discipline policies, and protections for immigrant students, as well as interventions intended to improve student attendance. Only in the past two or three years has chronic absenteeism become the focus of attention among policy makers, civil rights advocates, and educators. Absent from School provides the first critical, systematic look at research that can inform and guide those who are working to ensure that every child is in school and learning every day.

Young Adolescent Engagement in Learning: Supporting Students through Structure and Community
Student engagement is fundamental to learning, yet it also constitutes a major and long-standing challenge to educators around the world. This book provides an evidence-based theorisation of features associated with schooling engagement, along with targeted strategies that underpin a continuum of pedagogical, curricular and social support during the years of young adolescent schooling. Anchored by the Young Adolescent Engagement in Learning Model, a multi-layered model which incorporates a continuum of behavioural, emotional and cognitive dimensions of engagement, the authors provide a framework to help support the engagement of young adolescents. Seamlessly integrating theory and practice, this book explores the importance of avoiding educational disengagement, particularly from those who are most vulnerable due to a range of personal factors. This volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of educational young adolescent engagement and retention, as well as those working with young people.

Mindful Leadership: An Insight-Based Approach to College Administration
This book applies the concept of mindfulness to the challenges faced by academic leaders such as department chairs, deans, provosts, presidents or chancellors, and faculty leaders. In addition to instructing academic leaders how to become more mindful, the book also provides clear and practical explanations about what mindful leadership means in the setting of higher education. Unlike other books on mindfulness, this work does not assume that the only pathway to becoming more mindful is meditation. Although meditation is discussed as a technique, the book also presents numerous others strategies for becoming a more mindful leader without a meditation practice. The book is designed for use by individual academic leaders, administrative teams in a retreat, leadership workshops or training programs, and courses in higher education leadership.
