The purpose of academic advising is to help students select a program of study to meet their life and vocational goals. As such, academic advising is a central and important activity in the process of education. Academic advising occurs at least once each term for every student in the college; few student support functions occur as often or affect so many students. But while there is general agreement concerning the importance of academic advising for the efficient functioning of the institution and the effective functioning of the student, there is little agreement regarding the nature of academic advising and who should perform the function. Over the past 19 years, Emsi has responded to this demand by completing over 2000 such studies for colleges in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. The book chronicles the lessons learned over this time period and highlights what an economic impact study is, is not, what the results mean, and why they are important. It also discusses how presidents and governing boards can leverage the impact results to address other issues they deal with on a daily basis. Few college presidents are fully aware of this opportunity, however, and thus do not fully exploit the richness of the study. A strong case is also made that the college leadership should play a much stronger leadership roles in regional economic development of their region in addition to their roles as advocates for their colleges only.

The purpose of Instructional Leadership Knowledge and Skills for K-12 Success is to provide the reader with the foundational knowledge and skills that are necessary to become an effective educational leader. The topics addressed in this book are based on the content knowledge and professional skills that are found in the ELCC Building Level Standards. These standards also serve as the foundation of the course content of our accredited and nationally recognized by CAEP Master's Degree Program in Educational Leadership. Each chapter in this book is based on the knowledge and professional leadership skills presented in each of the courses in our M.Ed. Leadership degree program here in the College of Education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This book targets both current and aspiring educational leaders. Current leaders could use this book as a reference to refine their educational leadership knowledge and skills. Educational leader preparation programs will find that this book could be assigned as a textbook for aspiring educational leaders as an informative guide so that they can better understand the characteristics and concepts of effective school leadership.

Seldom is a comprehensive measurement program in place for parents to assist them in determining whether their local school is providing quality educational services and, when a reporting system is in place, an unbiased evaluation is lacking. This book demonstrates how parents can make informed choices regarding their local school or others within their community. The accountability model presented was highly rated by the U.S. Department of Education and its approach is used in Alberta and California. Fixed boundaries should be replaced and all schools labeled as magnet centers with locally developed mission statements to attract students without transportation costs. Democratizing the workplace is as necessary as democratizing our schools so that workers are recognized and rewarded according to their team's performance.

This need calls for an understanding of how important decisions are made or not made that affect the outcomes of public education. It is easy for administrators to get caught up in the daily managerial tasks of running a school. Passionate educators become principals, however, to make a positive impact on the classroom opportunities and experiences of young people. Because principals may not be experts in all areas of instruction, they must develop their own skills to become genuine participants in instructional conversations. However, the task of a true leader is also to develop the leadership capacity of those around them to ensure that best practices are embraced in all classrooms. The most important and consequential work in schools is happening in the trenches. Principals must commit to join their teachers in that space.
