Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland
Chinese wallpaper has been an important element of western interior decoration for three hundred years. As trade between Europe and China flourished in the seventeenth century, Europeans developed a strong taste for Chinese art and design. The stunningly beautiful wall coverings now known as `Chinese wallpaper' were developed by Chinese painting workshops in response to western demand. In spite of their spectacular beauty, Chinese wallpapers have not been studied in any depth until relatively recently. This book provides an overview of some of the most significant Chinese wallpapers surviving in the British Isles. Sumptuously illustrated, it shows how these wallpapers became a staple ingredient of high-end interiors while always retaining a touch of the exotic.

Living in Tuscany
Under the burning Tuscan sun roll marvelous hills, vineyards, and olive groves-all postcard-perfect landscapes nestling centuries-old towns, rural villas, and contadino farmhouses. We've tracked down the best examples of such havens to paint a warm-hued picture of the look and feel of Tuscan living. Follow in Michelangelo's footsteps to the Eremo Santa Maria Maddalena, a medieval hermitage nestled in the steep Arezzo hillside. Take a dip in the California-style pool of Roberto Budini Gattai, the architect who turned a modest winegrower's house into a dazzling homage to David Hockney. Cool down in the tiled bedrooms of the Villa Villoresi, where, legend has it, Dante's wife took refuge during the poet's exile in the early 14th century. This collection gathers the region's most remarkable homes and interiors, complete with insightful captions and enthralling double spreads. Across contemporary architecture and traditional craftsmanship, minimal earthenware and decadent furniture, we discover all the natural tones and sun-kissed textures of Tuscany.

The Bathroom Chronicles: 100 Women. 100 Images. 100 Stories.
For many women, the bathroom is the most intimate of spaces. It is the place where we encounter ourselves in the mirror each morning and every night, getting ready to face the day, or recede from it. THE BATHROOM CHRONICLES is a beautiful, chic, touching, and deeply feminine collection of photos and accompanying short stories (sometimes no more than a sentence or two) by women about their private spaces and most cherished possessions. Lena Dunham reveals the corner by the sink where she keeps her favorite pieces of jewelry, as well as her birth control. Erica Jong snaps her poodles and insists that they love her powder room and to fluff up their hair in front of the mirrors. Roz Chast reflects on a shelf in the corner that she purchased from a second-hand store. It's decorated with birds, because she loves birds, and a tiny emu that was given to her by a friend when she was in Australia. Like the bathrooms themselves each of these stories and images is unique--open, private, minimalistic, messy, and beautiful.

Living in Provence
Nestled in the south of France, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, is a land renowned for its lavender fields, fine cuisine, golden sun, and dreamy landscapes. The region of Provence has inspired such masters as Alphonse Daudet and Vincent van Gogh. So enthralled was Paul Cezanne by the Mont Sainte-Victoire that he immortalized it in a series of paintings. We enter his Provence studio, which still looks the same as it did over a century ago, as well as the house where Frederic Mistral, 1904 Nobel Prize winner, lived and wrote. We also admire the wrought-iron staircase and embroidered curtains of the Hotel Nord-Pinus in Arles, which hosted the likes of Napoleon III, Jean Cocteau, and Picasso. This updated edition gathers the region's most remarkable homes and interiors, complete with insightful captions, enthralling double spreads, and brand new photography. Across picturesque villages perched atop rocky hillsides, quaint gardens filled with olive trees and the heady scent of lavender, tiled rooftop terraces and warm, ochre tones: this book paints a gorgeous picture of Provencal living.

Crown moldings or cabinetry? Vintage or Victorian? Orange or ocher? Successful interior design - creative, comfortable rooms with a personal touch - is built from layer upon layer of colour, texture, pattern, embellishment, and more. But the plethora of choices available in the early twenty-first century has made it almost impossible to assemble these layers thoughtfully. Prominent decorator and author Penny Drue Baird is here to help with On Interior Design, an incisive exploration of the essential aspects of contemporary interiors. Baird considers architectural details, furniture, colour, fabric, flooring, lighting, and accessories, offering equal servings of expertise, history, and recommendation. She illustrates her topics with dozens of photographs of her own work, from apartments in New York City to houses in the Hamptons and Palm Beach to a residence in Paris. Building on her three previous books, in On Interior Design Baird imparts the lessons and principles gleaned from her thirty-plus years in practice.

Storied Interiors: The Designs of Patrick Sutton and the Stories That Shaped Them
Baltimore-based interior designer Patrick Sutton grew up touring the world with his travel journalist father and fashion model mother. The golden light of Rome, the colourful spices of Marrakesh, the polished marble floors of a Paris hotel: the young voyager developed a vivid visual library of the world's beautiful spaces. Following his love of design to a career in architecture and interiors, Sutton today draws upon this store of memories to craft unique designs intimately related to his clients and their dreams. Storied Interiors, Sutton's first book, offers glamorous presentations of 10 residences and four hotels and restaurants, including the award-winning Sagamore Pendry Hotel in Baltimore, but so much more. Each project is accompanied by the designer's narrative of a family, an historic estate, a restaurant. In addition, he details the eight design principles, from proportion and balance to the effect of different ceiling treatments, through which he translates this narrative, or story, into a complete, evocative interior.

Spectrum: Heritage Patterns and Colours
This simply structured and highly original book analyses the palettes that have been used by designers in the creation of furnishing fabrics and wallpapers from the 15th century to the present. The colours used in each pattern are presented in a simple proportional grid, giving a clear understanding of hues that have been expertly combined at different periods to create the designs we continue to admire and emulate. Spectrum opens with a brief introduction by interior design expert Ros Byam Shaw, exploring the history of colour as used in interiors. The fabrics and wallpapers that follow are arranged chronologically. Each is reproduced on its own double-page spread, and is accompanied by a brief narrative-style caption that provides information about each fabric or wallpaper and its significance in the context of interior design. Unique in such a book are the colour grids shown beside each pattern, in which the colours in the original piece are shown in proportion to their use, and with their CMYK references to enable designers to replicate these colours in their own work.

'A truly transformative read' Sunday Times STYLE 'More than ever, we need books like this' Jessica Seaton, Co-Founder of Toast and author of Gather, Cook, Feast A whole new way of looking at the world - and your life - inspired by centuries-old Japanese wisdom. Wabi sabi ( wah-bi sah-bi ) is a captivating concept from Japanese aesthetics, which helps us to see beauty in imperfection, appreciate simplicity and accept the transient nature of all things. With roots in zen and the way of tea, the timeless wisdom of wabi sabi is more relevant than ever for modern life, as we search for new ways to approach life's challenges and seek meaning beyond materialism. Wabi sabi is a refreshing antidote to our fast-paced, consumption-driven world, which will encourage you to slow down, reconnect with nature, and be gentler on yourself. It will help you simplify everything, and concentrate on what really matters. From honouring the rhythm of the seasons to creating a welcoming home, from reframing failure to ageing with grace, wabi sabi will teach you to find more joy and inspiration throughout your perfectly imperfect life. Visualizing the Nineteenth-Century Home: Modern Art and the Decorative Impulse
The nineteenth century - the Era of the Interior - witnessed the steady displacement of art from the ceilings, walls, and floors of aristocratic and religious interiors to the everyday spaces of bourgeois households, subject to their own enhanced ornamentation. Following the 1863 Salon des refuses, the French State began to channel mediocre painters into the decorative arts. England, too, launched an extensive reform of the decorative arts, resulting in more and more artists engaged in the production and design of complete interiors. America soon followed. Present art historical scholarship - still indebted to a modernist discourse that sees cultural progress to be synonymous with the removal of ornament from both utilitarian objects and architectural spaces - has not yet acknowledged the importance of the decorative arts in the myriad interior spaces of the 1800s. Nor has mainstream art history reckoned with the importance of the interior in nineteenth-century life and thought. Aimed at an interdisciplinary audience, including art and design historians, historians of the modern interior, interior designers, visual culture theorists, and scholars of nineteenth-century material culture, this collection of essays studies the modern interior in new ways. The volume addresses the double nature of the modern interior as both space and image, blurring the boundaries between arts and crafts, decoration and high art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, trompe-l'oeil effects and spatial practices. In so doing, it redefines the modern interior and its objects as essential components of modern art.

Shelfie: Clutter-clearing ideas for stylish shelf art
A decorating trend and social media phenomenon, 'the shelfie' originally emerged in response to the clutter-clearing movement. What started as a label for beautiful bookshelves is now applied to artfully stylish arrangements of collectables, flowers, photos, crafting ephemera, perfume bottles - and of course books. And shelfies don't just appear on shelves, but also on desks, worktops and fireplaces. De-cluttering, and then curating our favourite possessions stylishly, is a great way to bring personality into the home and workspace. In the first book on the shelfie, Martha Roberts shows you how to source, sort and arrange your belongings for every room in the house. Photography by Nick Pope, who took the photographs for At Home with Plants, also published by Mitchell Beazley. 'While most of us are just beginning to get to grips with the selfie, the 'shelfie' movement has been gaining digital ground. The self-obsessed are becoming the 'shelf-obsessed.' - Talib Choudry, the Telegraph
