A History of Tea: The Life and Times of the World's Favorite Beverage
As the world's second most popular beverage after water, tea has fascinated, awakened, motivated, and calmed us for well over two thousand years. A History of Tea tells the compelling story of the rise of tea in Asia and its eventual spread to the West and beyond. It illuminates the industries and traditions that developed from the spread of tea throughout the world and explains how tea is produced into the many varieties people drink each day. It also features a quick reference guide on subjects such as proper tea terminology and brewing. Happiness is a Red Teapot
For centuries, tea has held a valued place in both Eastern and Western cultures. From the ritual of a Japanese tea ceremony to the cozy informality of an English cuppa at the kitchen table, tea (whether green, black, white or herb) soothes, grounds and comforts us. It's no surprise that so many of us switch the kettle on at the first sign of trouble - keep calm and drink tea! In fact, that's how this book came about. After a particularly stressful week, editor Anouska Jones was sitting at home with her husband complaining about everything that had gone wrong. As he put their teapot and two mugs down on the table, her husband commented, Cheer up! You can't be miserable when you've got a bright red teapot in front of you! The very next morning, Anouska started researching quotes about tea and before long she had a collection of memorable quotations from rock stars (Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart), Buddhist monks (Thich Nat Hahn), politicians (Abraham Lincoln, William Gladstone), actors (Audrey Hepburn, Billy Connolly), adventurers (Bear Grylls) and more. It seems tea's appeal is truly universal! It's hoped that the resulting book of quotes and accompanying photographs brings you the same pleasure as a perfectly brewed cup of your own particular favorite.

Coffee for One: How the New Way to Make Your Morning Brew Became a Tempest in a Coffee Pod
Reminiscent of God in a Cup and The Devil's Cup, this is an inside look into the modern business of making coffee. But rather than a general history, Coffee for One focuses on the revolution that made single serve such a popular way to consume coffee worldwide, and the competition and conflict that got us here. This story features A-list names, corporate intrigue, environmental controversy, and much, much more. For the vast majority of the time humans have consumed coffee, the drink has been brewed in pots or other multi-serving tools; that is, until the last two decades, which saw the rise of the single serve coffee machine. Whether it's a Keurig or a Nespresso, today a lot of people get their coffee from little plastic individual serving pods. But why? Coffee for One breaks open this story of innovation, profit, and cultural change.

Achieving Sustainable Cultivation of Coffee: Breeding and Quality Traits
Coffee is one of the most widely traded commodities in the world. Coffee cultivation faces a number of challenges including over reliance on a relatively small number of varieties vulnerable to a range of abiotic and biotic stresses as well as increasing expectations of quality amongst consumers. These challenges are addressed by this volume. Part 1 looks at advances in understanding plant physiology and ensuring genetic diversity. These provide the basis for summarising developments in breeding improved varieties of Arabica and Robusta coffee. The second part of the book reviews our understanding of the chemical composition, sensory properties and potential nutraceutical benefits of coffee. With its distinguished editor and international range of expert authors, this volume will be a standard reference for coffee scientists, growers and processors.

Coca: Divine Plant of the Incas
Coca is a plant with a complex array of mineral nutrients, essential oils, and varied compounds with greater or lesser pharmacological effects - one of which happens to be the alkaloid cocaine, which in its concentrated, synthesized form is a stimulant drug with possible addictive properties. Of all the plants introduced to the world by American Indian societies, few have been as controversial as the coca bush. Part of the Erythroxylum genus, the coca plant, whose leaves were first consumed by Andean Indians, is the source of the raw alkaloids that are refined to make cocaine. In Coca: The Divine Plant of the Incas, W. Golden Mortimer, M.D. presents an exhaustive, encyclopedic look at the plant's history and pharmacology. He traces its origins among the Native American peoples, who chewed the plant leaves for their stimulating and analgesic properties. From there, he examines the early European colonists' first encounters with the plant, how it became an object of intense study among naturalists and scientists, and how chemists first used it to create cocaine extract. Coca: The Divine Plant of the Incas includes: -Traditional Indian uses for coca -Early European explorers' impressions of the plant, first damned as an immoral intoxicant, and then praised as a stimulant for work and travel -The story of Angelo Mariani's coca-leaf wine, which won accolades from European royalty and the Pope -Botanical aspects of the coca plant varietals -Soil, humidity, elevation, latitude, and other factors necessary for the plant's growth -How to grow and harvest the plant, and cure and store coca leaf -Chemistry of the leaf, its alkaloids, and its extracts -How to extract cocaine from coca leaf -How to determine the purity and strength of coca extract -Coca and muscular energy, exercise, diet, and fatigue -Coca's effects on the body, the brain, and the nervous system -The pathology of cocaine use and addiction Filled with rare illustrations and diagrams, Coca: The Divine Plant of the Incas is a thorough historical and scientific examination of this little-understood plant and its products. It belongs in the library of anyone interested in pharmacology, botany, natural studies, or the history and culture of indigenous Americans. Coca explores the fascinating history of Coca, know as the Divine Plant of the Incas. The coca leaf has been chewed and brewed for tea traditionally for centuries among its indigenous peoples in the Andean region - and does not cause any harm and is beneficial to human health when the leaf is chewed. When chewed, coca is a mild stimulant and suppresses hunger, thirst, pain, and fatigue. It helps overcome altitude sickness, which is helpful in the Andes Mountains. It covers the Incan empire, its conquest by the Spaniards, the existence of coca within Incan society, early use of the drug, and the present day Indians of Peru. Coca chewing and drinking of coca tea is carried out daily by millions of people in the Andes without problems, and is considered sacred by indigenous cultures. Coca tea is widely used, even outside the Andean Amazon region. Coca leaf was originally used in the soft drink Coca Cola for its stimulant effect, but was removed in 1903 it was removed and replaced by a decocainized coca extract. Traditional medical uses of coca are foremost as a stimulant to overcome fatigue, hunger, and thirst. It also is used as an anesthetic to alleviate the pain of headache and sores. Before stronger anesthetics were available, coca leaves were used for broken bones, childbirth, and during operations on the skull. Coca leaves have been used for centuries as a stimulant. Coca is traditionally cultivated in the lower altitudes of the eastern slopes of the Andes, or the highlands depending on the species grown. Since ancient times, its leaves have been an important trade commodity between the lowlands where it is grown and the higher altitudes where it is widely consumed by the Andean peoples of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Bolivia.

Easy Leaf Tea: Tea House Recipes to Make at Home
Unravel the history, sample the flavours and experience the amazing versatility of the world's favourite brew and all its health-giving properties. At the beginning of the book, tea expert Timothy d'Offay starts with the very basics with a section on water and tea tools to make brewing easier, like the hoop jug that helps you get the water temperature right for your green tea in an instant and with minimal fuss. Then, as well as traditional ways of making tea, he explores new brewing methods such as Flow Brew, which involves brewing one tea through another to create an infusion, and Ambient Tea, a way of making tea pair better with food. There is a Cold Brew chapter as well as one for delicious sparkling teas, called Kitchen Colas, which you can make in the comfort of your own home with tea and a few other natural ingredients. Fresh Fruit Tea Quarters are another new innovation, combining tea and fresh fruit juice to create a refreshing soft drink. One of most exciting recent developments in tea is the worldwide popularity of matcha both as a beverage and as an ingredient liberating it from the refined world of the tea ceremony. In Easy Leaf Tea there will be recipes to make the most of matcha and the other stoneground teas now available so you can learn to make tasty Somersault drinks - frappes, milk shakes and ice creams. So turn on your kettle, tune into tea culture and drop those tasteless tea bags for some of the best leaf tea experiences you can have.

Craft Coffee: A Manual: Brewing a Better Cup at Home
Named a top food & drink book of 2017 by Food Network, Wired, Sprudge, and Booklist. This comprehensive but accessible handbook is for the average coffee lover who wants to make better coffee at home. Unlike other coffee books, this one focuses exclusively on coffee--not espresso--and explores multiple pour-over, immersion, and cold-brew techniques on 10 different devices. Thanks to a small but growing number of dedicated farmers, importers, roasters, and baristas, coffee quality is at an all-time high. But for nonprofessionals, achieving caf quality at home can seem out of reach. With dozens of equipment options, conflicting information on how to use that equipment, and an industry language that, at times, doesn't seem made for the rest of us, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Craft Coffee: A Manual, written by a coffee enthusiast for coffee enthusiasts, is a comprehensive guide to improving your brew at home. The book provides all the information readers need to discover what they like in a cup of specialty coffee--and how to replicate the perfect cup day after day. From the science of extraction and brewing techniques to choosing equipment and deciphering coffee bags, Craft Coffee focuses on the issues--cost, time, taste, and accessibility--that home coffee brewers negotiate and shows that no matter where you are in your coffee journey, you can make a great cup at home.

VITAL TONICS & SOOTHING TEAS: TRADITIONA
Everyone knows that chamomile tea is the answer to a good night's sleep and that ginger tea can settle your stomach. Rachel de Thample has gathered a collection of the best of these ancient drinks and traditional remedies, along with a few modern spins, offering tips on how to best build them into a busy lifestyle. Organized into three chapters, she covers tonics such as Dairy Keifr, Beet Kvass, Nettle Tonic, and Ginger Shots; teas such as Grasshopper Tea, Spice Route Tea, Armenian Herbal Tea, and Afghan Pink Chai; plus delicious and beneficial drinks such as Elderflower Cordial, Amazake, and Kombucha.
