Locational Analysis of Firms' Activities from a Strategic Perspective
This book presents a variety of research papers on factories' locations, city systems, and regional development. Consisting of three parts, it provides insights into the locational aspects of firms' activities from a strategic perspective. Part 1 discusses decision-making in the context of location, specifying the motivation for firms to move their factories provided by the corporate tax system. It also presents a case study from East Asia to clarify a mechanism by which firms move factories. Part 2 addresses city systems, offering theoretical clues to understanding why city systems are important to regional economies. It also clarifies from the empirical analysis the relations between city systems and the performances of regional economies. Part 3 investigates the topic of industrial parks, demonstrating how they form a basis for establishing industrial clusters in regional economies. In addition, it examines the economic phases, such as economic disparity, generated in the process of development.

The Taxation of Pensions
Theoretical and policy perspectives on the taxation of pension, viewed in an international context. Policy makers and academic researchers have been preoccupied in recent decades with the design of pension schemes and effective pension system reform. Relatively little attention has been given to the taxation of pensions and, more broadly, the provision of retirement income. In this book, experts from a range of countries explore the interconnection. Their contributions are especially timely, given recent demographic and political developments including population aging that lengthens the time between contribution payment and benefit receipt, the mobility of capital and labor brought about by globalization, and the complexity of pension taxation within and between countries. In shedding light on these issues, the chapters document the various forms of taxation of pension systems; use economic theory to explain both qualitative and quantitative observations; and consider whether the observed interaction of taxation and pensions is efficient. Theoretical overviews are followed by rigorous analyses of pension taxation in specific countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Contributors Torben M. Andersen, Spencer Bastani, Hazel Bateman, Soeren Blomquist, Axel Boersch-Supan, Jorge Miguel Bravo, Gary Burtless, Rafal Chomik, Helmuth Cremer, Carl Emmerson, Csaba Feher, Bernd Genser, Robert Holzmann, Paul Johnson, Alain Jousten, Christian Keuschnigg, Eric Koepcke, George Kudrna, Jukka Lassila, Luca Micheletto, Pierre Pestieau, John Piggott, Christopher Quinn, Tarmo Valkonen, Alan Woodland

Taxation: Philosophical Perspectives
This is the first book to give a collective treatment of philosophical issues relating to tax. The tax system is central to the operation of states and to the ways in which states interact with individual citizens. Taxes are used by states to fund the provision of public goods and public services, to engage in direct or indirect forms of redistribution, and to mould the behaviour of individual citizens. As the contributors to this volume show, there are a number of pressing and thorny philosophical issues relating to the tax system, and these issues often connect in fascinating ways with foundational questions regarding property rights, public justification, democracy, state neutrality, stability, political psychology, and other moral and political issues. Many of these deep and fascinating philosophical questions about tax have not received as much sustained attention as they clearly merit. The aim of advancing the debate about tax in political philosophy has both general and more specific aspects, ranging across both over-arching issues regarding the tax system as a whole and more specific issues relating to particular forms of tax policy. Thinking clearly about tax is not an easy task, as much that is of central importance is missed if one proceeds at too great a level of abstraction, and issues of conceptual and normative importance often only come sharply into focus when viewed against real-world questions of implementation and feasibility. Serious philosophical work on the tax system will often therefore need to be interdisciplinary, and so the discussion in this book includes a number of scholars whose expertise spans across neighbouring disciplines to philosophy, including political science, economics, public policy, and law.

The New Face of HMRC: Behind the Tangled Web
Since the last edition of this perennial guide, the tax world has changed almost beyond recognition. The leak of the so-called Panama Papers in 2016, and of the Paradise Papers a year later, revealed to an incredulous general public the extent to which some privileged individuals and corporations accessed tucked-away trust and bank accounts. The result is increasing pressure on HMRC to raise revenue and to prosecute a greater number of tax evaders. Government has given HMRC stronger, less ambiguous legislation, putting the onus on the individual to prove their innocence. A tax investigation is now akin to a spider's rapacious search for food, and HMRC has substantially more information about which line of enquiry to pursue, and about the helpless taxpayer who lies twitching and vulnerable at the end of each silken thread. The New Face of HMRC: Behind the Tangled Web will guide you through the pitfalls of a tax investigation. With humour and a light-touch approach it will help you avoid the hairy clutches and ferocious fangs of the HMRC investigators. Peppered with practical advice and Pugh's humorous cartoons, this is a strong antidote to the poison of the taxman's pursuit.

Cost Accounting and Financial Management for Construction Project Managers
Proper cost accounting and financial management are essential elements of any successful construction job, and therefore make up essential skills for construction project managers and project engineers. Many textbooks on the market focus on the theoretical principles of accounting and finance required for head office staff like the chief financial officer (CFO) of a construction firm. This book's unique practical approach focuses on the activities of the construction management team, including the project manager, superintendent, project engineer, and jobsite cost engineers and cost accountants. In short, this book provides a seamless connection between cost accounting and construction project management from the construction management practitioner's perspective. Following a complete accounting cycle, from the original estimate through cost controls to financial close-out, the book makes use of one commercial construction project case study throughout. It covers key topics like financial statements, ratios, cost control, earned value, equipment depreciation, cash flow, and pay requests. But unlike other texts, this book also covers additional financial responsibilities such as cost estimates, change orders, and project close-out. Also included are more advanced accounting and financial topics such as supply chain management, activity-based accounting, lean construction techniques, taxes, and the developer's pro forma. Each chapter contains review questions and applied exercises and the book is supplemented with an eResource with instructor manual, estimates and schedules, further cases and figures from the book. This textbook is ideal for use in all cost accounting and financial management classes on both undergraduate and graduate level construction management or construction engineering programs.

Is it allowable? That is the question so often heard when an accountant is preparing a client's business accounts. There are classic `grey area' expenses as well as the detail behind new legislation to contend with in the quest for the solution. Researching the problem is time-consuming and stressful. This is where A-Z of Business Tax Deductions, 2nd edition steps in. It has been compiled to provide clarity in areas where there is doubt. It examines the deductibility for tax purposes of particular expenses incurred by sole traders, partnerships and limited liability partnerships. The A-Z format allows the reader to navigate to the relevant topic. Each section contains a listing of relevant cases, HMRC guidance and legislative references so that the legal principles that lie behind the issue can be considered. Extra commentary is provided in instances where a clear `yes or no' answer to the deductibility question simply does not exist. A-Z of Business Tax Deductions, 2nd edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the major legislative changes brought in by recent Finance Acts including Finance Act 2018, as well as recently issued HMRC guidance and relevant new cases. Key updates include: - Loan interest relief restriction for residential property businesses - Qualifying conditions for using cash basis accounts - New cases on subsistence and travel claims - Adjustments on change of accounting basis - Trading and property allowances

Guide to Taxpayers' Rights and HMRC Powers
Guide to Taxpayers' Rights and HMRC Powers, Sixth Edition illustrates the growing breadth of HMRC powers which seem to increase every year as successive governments strive to counter tax avoidance and offshore tax evasion. As this process continues, the rights of taxpayers become less evident and this book clearly lays out what these are, as well as the increasingly complex penalty regime for non-compliance and what steps practitioners can take on behalf of their client to challenge HMRC on any enquiries or decisions. Finance Act 2018 included new provisions covering hidden economy conditionality, simplifying late submission and late payment sanctions, and extending time limit for offshore non-compliance; and the new edition addresses all these areas. Key updates for this edition: - Updated to include commentary on the Government's Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative, the administrative rules for the April 2019 loan charge and the new VAT DOTAS rules. - Includes coverage of important new cases including: -- R (on application of Jiminez) v FTT (scope of information notices) -- J P Whitter (Wearwell Engineers) Ltd v HMRC (removal from CIS) -- HMRC v Raymond Tooth (deliberate inaccuracy) -- Raftopolou v HMRC (interpretation of TMA 1970, s 118(2)). This book is an essential resource for all tax practitioners, tax advisers and accountants.

Our Selfish Tax Laws: Toward Tax Reform That Mirrors Our Better Selves
Why tax law is not just a pocketbook issue but a reflection of what and whom we, as a society, value. Most of us think of tax as a pocketbook issue: how much we owe, how much we'll get back, how much we can deduct. In Our Selfish Tax Laws, Anthony Infanti takes a broader view, considering not just how taxes affect us individually but how the tax system reflects our culture and society. He finds that American tax laws validate and benefit those who already possess power and privilege while starkly reflecting the lines of difference and discrimination in American society based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, immigration status, and disability. Infanti argues that instead of focusing our tax reform discussions on which loopholes to close or which deductions to allow, we should consider how to make our tax system reflect American ideals of inclusivity rather than institutionalizing exclusion. After describing the theoretical and intellectual underpinnings of his argument, Infanti offers two comparative case studies, examining the treatment of housing tax expenditures and the unit of taxation in the United States, Canada, France, and Spain to show how tax law reflects its social and cultural context. Then, drawing on his own work and that of other critical tax scholars, Infanti explains how the discourse surrounding tax reform masks the many ways that the American tax system rewards and reifies privilege. To counter this, Infanti urges us to work together to create a society with a tax system that respects and values all Americans.

Monetary Plurality in Local, Regional and Global Economies
The idea that each country should have one currency is so deeply rooted in people's minds that the possibility of multiple and concurrent currencies seems unthinkable. Monetary systems contribute to problems of high unemployment and social distress during financial and economic crisis, so reforms to increase the responsiveness and flexibility of the monetary system can be part of the solution. This book discusses `monetary plurality', which is the circulation of several currencies at the same time and space. It addresses how multiple currency circuits work together and transform socio-economic systems, particularly by supporting economies at the local level of regions and cities. The book shows that monetary plurality has been ubiquitous throughout history and persists at present because the existence of several currency circuits facilitates small-scale production and trade in a way that no single currency can accomplish on its own. Monetary plurality can improve resilience, access to livelihoods and economic sustainability. At the same time, it introduces new risks in terms of economic governance, so it needs to be properly understood. The book analyses experiences of monetary plurality in Europe, Japan, and North and South America, written by researchers from East and West and from the global North and South. Replete with case studies, this book will prove a valuable addition to any student or practitioner's bookshelf.

Loose Leaf for Financial Accounting
Don't you love those moments in your course when students are fully engaged? When the Aha! revelations are bursting like fireworks? David Spiceland, Wayne Thomas, and Don Herrmann have developed a unique set of materials based directly on their collective years in the classroom. They've brought together best practices like highlighting Common Mistakes, offering frequent Let's Review exercises, integrating the course with a running Continuing Problem, demonstrating the relevance of the course with real-world companies and decision analysis, and conveying it all in a student-friendly conversational writing style. The authors have developed a concise and well-organized learning framework to show students that accounting consists of three major processes: measuring, analyzing, and communicating. By consistently tying each lesson into this framework, instructors can continue to improve student outcomes. After the proven success of the first four editions of Financial Accounting, the fifth edition will continue to motivate, engage, and challenge students. Paired with the market-leading power of the Connect platform, the Spiceland/Thomas/Hermann author team will truly illuminate the financial accounting course for each student.

Taxation has been seen as the domain of charisma-free accountants, lawyers and number crunchers - an unlikely place to encounter big societal questions about democracy, equity or good governance. Yet it is exactly these issues that pervade conversations about taxation among policymakers, tax collectors, civil society activists, journalists and foreign aid donors in Africa today. Tax has become viewed as central to African development. Written by leading international experts, Taxing Africa offers a cutting-edge analysis on all aspects of the continent's tax regime, displaying the crucial role such arrangements have on attempts to create social justice and push economic advancement. From tax evasion by multinational corporations and African elites to how ordinary people navigate complex webs of `informal' local taxation, the book examines the potential for reform, and how space might be created for enabling locally-led strategies.
