The Innovator's DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators
A new classic, cited by leaders and media around the globe as a highly recommended read for anyone interested in innovation. In The Innovator's DNA, authors Jeffrey Dyer, Hal Gregersen, and bestselling author Clayton Christensen (The Innovator's Dilemma, The Innovator's Solution, How Will You Measure Your Life?) build on what we know about disruptive innovation to show how individuals can develop the skills necessary to move progressively from idea to impact. By identifying behaviors of the world's best innovators--from leaders at Amazon and Apple to those at Google, Skype, and Virgin Group--the authors outline five discovery skills that distinguish innovative entrepreneurs and executives from ordinary managers: Associating, Questioning, Observing, Networking, and Experimenting. Once you master these competencies (the authors provide a self-assessment for rating your own innovator's DNA), the authors explain how to generate ideas, collaborate to implement them, and build innovation skills throughout the organization to result in a competitive edge. This innovation advantage will translate into a premium in your company's stock price--an innovation premium--which is possible only by building the code for innovation right into your organization's people, processes, and guiding philosophies. Practical and provocative, The Innovator's DNA is an essential resource for individuals and teams who want to strengthen their innovative prowess.

Leadership Dubai Style: The Habits to Achieve Remarkable Success

First Finalist - 2016 International Book Awards

For the first time ever, the habits behind Dubai's success...read Leadership Dubai Style to learn how Dubai grew against the odds (and how you can as well).

Every now and then a story comes along that absolutely captures your attention. Dubai is one of those for me, but not just me--millions around the world yearn to come to Dubai. This global supercity, which just five decades ago was a cholera-plagued backwater, might just be the picture of a dream becoming reality. But how, exactly, did this incredible transformation take place?

Leadership! But not your run-of-the-mill government leadership, nor typical corporate leadership, nor leadership taught in classrooms. This is Dubai-style leadership.

Living and working in Dubai for the past decade, I've seen the leadership impact firsthand. As a leadership scholar and advisor to CEOs, I thought I was perfectly situated to discover the reasons behind Dubai's success. So, in 2008 I set out to discover the city's "secret sauce." Then the Global Financial Crisis hit! Disaster! I pressed the pause button on my research, and, like everyone in the city, held my breath. Well, what happened next confirmed that there is indeed something unique and special here.

I spent the next three years researching, interviewing more than two hundred leaders, and identifying the city's leadership secrets, eventually whittling them down to twelve habits. My aim was to develop a replicable model that I could share with my readers--leaders in businesses, governments, and elsewhere. Anyone who is interested in leadership, and in particular achieving exceptional results, can benefit from understanding the twelve habits I outline here.

To learn how to lead Dubai style, we need to walk the desert paths of the past to the superhighways of the future. Leadership Dubai Style retraces the city's journey and draws out the leadership habits that emerged over time. For decades Dubai brought in--imported--leading minds from every field to learn from them. Now it's time for Dubai to teach us--to teach us how to lead!

Boards of directors are sitting ducks. Shareholders complain and even attack, management manipulates, and individual board members have little power, able to act only as part of the board as a whole. Governance issues are front and center, yet there is often little understanding, even among board members, of the key role that they play. Written in an accessible and human voice, The Governance Revolution: What Every Board Member Needs to Know, NOW! provides information and context essential to anyone seeking to understand how corporations and their stewards-the board of directors-can and should function in the volatile world we inhabit. Deborah Hicks Midanek offers useful insight into what board members of corporations actually do, the current standards for board members and why they exist. She includes a timely discussion of how clarity of purpose can improve board and director effectiveness. Informed by her long experience serving public, private, and family owned corporate boards as well as those of charitable, and government organizations, she provides essential context regarding the evolution of board practice as well as candid discussion of the issues involved in the relentless effort to improve corporate governance processes. Focused mainly on the dominant public corporation, she also explores the special challenges of serving private and family owned as well as nonprofit and public agency boards. Written by a seasoned board member, and liberally laced with stories and cases illustrating the tricky issues directors wrestle with, this book is the essential common-sense companion for anyone working with a board, serving on a board, or wanting to do so. Change is the only constant. Learn to be a change-maker. In Imagine It Forward, Beth Comstock, the former vice chair of GE, describes her twenty-five year efforts to be an instigator of change at every level of business. When she first moved from NBC to parent company GE in 1998, she was ignored as a woman in a man's world, treated as an outsider because she didn't have a business background, and ignored as a mere PR person. But CEO Jeff Immelt realized even then that the industrial giant, like so many businesses, had to change fast in order to stay relevant in a world where Google, Facebook, and an explosion of internet companies were transforming how goods and services were marketed, made, and sold. In a deeply personal journey filled with practical takeaways from two plus decades of initiating change at the top levels of one of the largest corporations in the world, Comstock lays out the challenges, opportunities, tools, and practices needed to embrace change, whatever industry you are in, and make it part of every management decision.

Beyond Sizzle: The Next Evolution of Branding
Are you interested in learning how to create companies people love to love? If you want to be that company people love to love--the one that people can't wait to tell others about--you will find this book both inspirational and informative. Beyond Sizzle answers how branding, reimagined as an approach to management, can be a force for engaging your most important resource--people--to build your most valuable asset: your reputation. This book will ring true to anyone who wants to be that company customers, employees and the world can't wait to tell others about! People are increasingly looking beyond the sizzle of product and service advertising to the substance of the companies behind the image. As the conversations about purpose move from the margins to the mainstream, it's clear that this once-fringe business perspective, often associated with Birkenstocks and granola, now has a seat at the boardroom table. Award-winning management strategist Dr. Mona Amodeo brings together the best practices of change management, marketing, and communications to give readers an actionable process for creating brands that matter--organizations that are redefining workplaces, reimagining customer experiences, and creating innovative products and services that are building healthier, more sustainable communities--in turn, creating a better world for us all. If you are an entrepreneurial thinker ready to embrace the opportunity to prosper economically by having a positive impact on people, communities, and the world; a game changer courageous enough to challenge the status quo by designing and leading organizations as brands that matter; or a leader who wants to make choices that leave the world better than you found it, this book is for you. Readers who have enjoyed the works of Wally Olins, Dr. Mary Jo Hatch, Simon Sinek and books like The Brand Flip will benefit from Mona's approach on how to reach beyond philosophy and platitudes to a roadmap for transforming organizations into brands that matter to customers, employees and the world. Leadership: Lessons from the Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson for Turbulent Times
The New York Times No. 1 Bestseller 'What Goodwin brings to this book - above all her other attributes - is a true sense of wisdom . . . superb' Professor Andrew Roberts, author, Churchill: Walking with Destiny In this culmination of five decades of acclaimed studies in presidential history, Doris Kearns Goodwin offers an illuminating exploration of the origin, uncertain growth, and exercise of fully developed leadership. 'A marvelous banquet with four great presidents who provide lessons for all. Pull up a chair' Warren Buffett Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? In Leadership Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied - Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson - to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized as leaders by others. By looking back to their first entry into public life, when their paths were filled with confusion, hope, and fear, we can share their struggles and follow their development into leaders. Leadership tells the story of how they all collided with dramatic reversals that disrupted their lives and threatened to forever shatter their ambitions. Nonetheless, they all emerged fitted to confront the contours and dilemmas of their times. No common pattern describes the trajectory of leadership. Although set apart in background, abilities and temperament, they shared a fierce ambition, a hunger to succeed beyond expectations. All four, at their best, were guided by a sense of moral purpose that led them at moments of great challenge to summon their talents to enlarge the opportunities and lives of others. The Challenge Culture: Why the Most Successful Organizations Run on Pushback
'The Challenge Culture is a must-read for employers and employees alike, and promises to get ideas for long-term success percolating.' -- Robert Kraft, chairman and CEO of the Kraft Group 'Nigel's career, vision and humanity are very refreshing' -- Claude Littner, former Chief Executive of Tottenham Hotspur and author of Single-Minded: My Life in Business Challenge is essential for survival and sustained success in today's volatile world. We live in an era when successful organisations can fail in a flash. But they can cope with change and thrive by creating a culture that supports positive pushback: questioning everything without disrespecting anyone. Nigel Travis has forty years of experience as a leader in large and successful organizations, as well as those facing existential crisis - such as Blockbuster as it dawdled in the face of the Netflix challenge. In his ten years as CEO and Chairman of Dunkin' Brands, Travis fine-tuned his ideas about the challenge culture and perfected the practices required to build it. He argues that the best way for organisations to succeed in today's environment is to embrace challenge and encourage pushback, rather than reject them. Everyone - from the newest recruit to the senior leader - must be given the freedom to speak up and question the status quo, must learn how talk in a civil way about difficult issues, and should be encouraged to debate strategies and tactics - although always in the spirit of shared purpose. How else will new ideas emerge? How else can organisations steadily improve? Through colourful story-telling, with many examples from his own experiences - including his leadership in turning around the fear-ridden culture of Leyton Orient Football Club -Travis shows how to establish a culture that embraces challenge, achieves exceptional results, and ensures a prosperous future. PRAISE FOR THE CHALLENGE CULTURE: 'Nigel Travis has hit the nail on the head. Collective brilliance can only come from challenge and he proves this throughout his own leadership journey. Entertaining, edifying and exactly right.' -- Manley Hopkinson FRSA FRGS, author of Compassionate Leadership Women, especially young women, in today's world need to understand the importance of challenging authority and speaking up to share their point of view. The Challenge Culture brilliantly explains how to do it. (Nicole Lapin, author of Boss Bitch and Rich Bitch) 'A must read for all people leading organizations in these turbulent times!' (Larry Bossidy, former chairman and CEO of Honeywell International, coauthor of Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done) 'This book not only takes you inside [Nigel's] businesses, but inside the mind that challenged them to thrive. If you can use 20% of what he's suggesting, you'll be ahead of the game. Use 40% and you can blow the doors off.' (Mark Goldstein, former chief marketing officer of BBDO Worldwide) 'Dissent is not disloyalty but can be the spark for innovation and the safeguard for integrity. ... Conformity kills creativity and subverts justice and The Challenge Culture is the antidote to a contagion of conformity across sectors.' (Jeffrey A. Sonnenfeld, Lester Crown Professor of Leadership Practice, Yale School of Management)

Exceptional Leadership by Design: How Design in Great Organizations Produces Great Leadership
Imagine a world with great leadership. What would that world be like? Would it be a better world or a worse one? Now ratchet great leadership up to exceptional leadership and suddenly we have cause for optimism. But how do we design exceptional leadership, and would we even know it if we saw it? Traditional paradigms of leadership have celebrated decisive top-down control and analytical decision-making. But times are changing. The world is more connected, complex, fluid and interdependent. This book debunks the myth that leaders need to be creative like designers to apply Design Thinking. Applying design approaches and practices to organizational leadership is not just about its leaders becoming more creative. It is definitely not about the person at the top coming up with the grand answer. Design thinking starts with the 'pain point' related to the problem you are trying to solve. You get to the heart of the issue. It is a collaborative effort that neatly leads stakeholders and representatives affected by the problem to design novel leadership solutions that actually work. This collection of stories, examples and narratives about exceptional leadership by design provides readers of all levels of experience with tangible, real, and heartfelt examples of how the design process can be applied to leadership. It will show how we: Inform great leadership with design Strengthen our own leadership by design Redesign hero leadership for more inclusivity Redesign organizations for Fe+Male leadership synergy Design leadership for a VUCA world Design flow-based leadership Design organizations that build resilient leadership Design leadership for innovation Design culturally intelligent leadership Build leadership into our spaces and places

The Business of Managing Emotions: A Three-Dimensional Approach
We work to create value in terms of sustenance or satisfaction. During this journey of creating value, we feel. Regardless of whether we are allowed to demonstrate it in public or whether we admit it to ourselves or not, whatever occurs at the workplace generates emotional moods. The expression of these emotions at work greatly depends on the social and cultural norms of various countries, regions, industries and the personal preference of people themselves. But the truth is, these emotions exist! The Navrasas comprise four negative emotional moods (rasas) that could hold back work performance, four positive ones that could spur productivity and a ninth one, which is the aim of this journey-the ability to sift the personal from the professional. The Business of Managing Emotions: A Three-Dimensional Approach offers practical solutions to leverage emotions at work through a three-dimensional emotional management (3-DEM) framework-an amalgamation of the performing arts, the medical science and the evolving social science of management.

Mastering Disruption and Innovation in Product Management: Connecting the Dots
This book is an essential guide or foundational toolkit for anyone who is involved in the process of developing, offering or selling any type of product or service. Based on how to surf on the waves of innovation and the principle of form follows function (System Architecture), it introduces and connects concepts like Market Understanding, Design Thinking, Design to Value, Modularization and Agility. It introduces readers to the essence of these main frameworks and provides a toolkit that explains both theoretically and practically when and how to utilize which one. The methods and processes described in this book have all been successfully tested in many industries. They apply in today's market context of high uncertainty, complexity and turbulence, where innovation and disruption are essential. Readers will find answers to two fundamental questions: How can we implement an innovation process and environment that are conducive to successful product design? And, if our products fail to appeal to customers, how can we achieve a major turn-around with regard to product development? A wealth of examples and case studies help readers to benefit from the authors' broad professional experience. Further, lessons learned and conceptual summaries provide valuable shortcuts to the methods and tools discussed. For today's CEOs, enabling innovation is one of THE most complex leadership tasks. But innovation is not about theory and nice buzzwords. It's about succeeding in the real world. This `hands-on' book connects the dots and introduces the reader to some of the most relevant ideas and pragmatic concepts fitting today's business reality. Dr. Robert Neuhauser, Executive VP and Global Head People and Leadership Development, Siemens At the most fundamental level this book brings order to chaos. It sets different and highly relevant design approaches into a complementary picture, rather than presenting them as competing ways of solving the same problem. Product designers, managers, consultants, scholars and students will surely have this valuable book within reach on a daily basis. Olivier L. de Weck, Ph.D - MIT Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems, Editor-in-Chief Systems Engineering
