Leadership for Intellectual Disability Service: Motivating Change and Improvement
People with intellectual disability often experience challenges in their lives. These may be due to difficulties in social adaptation, but may also be related to a reality of disempowerment whereby they have little role in the decisions central to their lives or in the provision of health, educational and social services. This book argues for alternative and innovative approaches to leadership in intellectual disability service provision. It does this in the light of service scandals including Winterborne View (UK), Oswald D. Heck (USA), Aras Attracta (Ireland) and many others. This book also explores the failed leadership issues underpinning such debacles and then examines how the context for intellectual disability service provision has changed. The authors propose alternative models for service leadership that are contiguous with the changed landscape, emphasizing participatory models of leadership and ending with exemplary vignettes outlining situations where such innovative change is happening.

Crushing the IT Gender Bias: Thriving as a Woman in Technology
Conscious and unconscious bias, societal pressures, and discomfort with women's ambition are issues that women are confronted with in any male-dominated setting, and tech is no exception. Statistically, women are a disproportionately small percentage of the technology industry. How did we get here, what is changing, and what can future generations of women in STEM expect? In Crushing the IT Gender Bias, author Kellyn Pot'Vin-Gorman applies her two decades of experience in tech to these meaningful questions, plus many more. As a mentor and sponsor of women in the database and development communities, Pot'Vin-Gorman uses experience, visualizations of hard data, and industry interviews to describe the many challenges that women face in STEM. She then shows you how to inoculate against them. Small, positive changes like these are similar to a vaccine: they build individual immunity and thus create herd immunity to protect the most vulnerable. This shift is accomplished through increased representation of-and direct exposure to-successful role models in the industry. You'll get practical advice related to hiring practices, salary negotiations, and barriers to collaboration. After witnessing multiple female peers depart the tech world, Pot'Vin-Gorman has written Crushing the IT Gender Bias to make her voice heard and to start this necessary conversation productively so that women can thrive. Additionally, this book is for male professionals who desire to grow in their understanding and eliminate bias in their environments. Do not be content with mere survival. Read this book, practice the techniques, and, most importantly, learn how to pay it forward. By arming yourself with knowledge and facing bias head-on, you can be the meaningful change that you want to see in the tech industry. Who This Book Is For Women in any area of technology with a desire to make and lead positive change by eliminating conscious and unconscious bias along with strategically confronting the many issues facing women in a field dominated by cultural bias. The book appeals to those just starting a career through to seasoned professionals, and even to those entering the management tier. This book also welcomes men with a desire to grow in their understanding and eliminate bias in the world around them.

Foreword by: Marshall Goldsmith, #1 NY Times bestselling author, Thinkers50-#1 Executive Coach and the only two-time #1 Leadership Thinker in the World Complexity has met its match! Today, organizations are grappling with ambiguity, volatility and paradox surrounding the challenges they face. This is complexity. But too many leaders approach complexity the wrong way - they push their people harder and harder and tackle problems one-at-a-time over months, sometimes even years and nearly always in a linear fashion. It's like setting a pot of water on low and waiting for it to boil. To solve the seemingly intractable challenges that leaders bang their heads against for months - to get the metaphorical water to boil - you must generate a high amount of heat very quickly. In this book, the authors share their proven formula for dramatically shortening the process and solving an organization's toughest challenges in mere days.

Best Practices in Green Supply Chain Management: A Developing Country Perspective
Meeting consumer needs and desires, while promoting cleaner production and sustainable consumption, is one of the greatest challenges facing industry today. Addressing poverty and environmental degradation requires changing how global organizations produce and distribute goods and how people and organizations consume and dispose of them. It requires a more efficient use of resources, together with action-oriented thinking but raises a range of highly specific challenges for organizations operating in emerging economies. Best Practices in Green Supply Chain Management offers new insights on the challenges of integrating environmental awareness into supply chain management operations in developing countries. The authors present in-depth case studies from the Indian and Mexican manufacturing industries, which are used to illustrate broader lessons in the implementation of sustainable practices for developing economies. This book presents detailed findings and practical guidance to both researchers and practitioners working in the fields of business management, sustainability and green practices, as well as all those who wish to understand why organizations should integrate sustainable strategies and how to implement them.

Vincis: The Art and Science of Winning
After 21 years of running a company dedicated to helping clients win, Nicci Take shares her secrets to sales, presentations and winning business. Able to turn their average client from winning 1 in 3 sales pitches, to 3 in 4, the m62 I vincis process is an invaluable presentation revolution. A lot has changed in sales since Nicci entered the business almost 30 years ago, when she was the first sales rep in her team to own a mobile phone, and the sales floor was a competitive mess of alpha-male egos. Sales has become more cooperative, more feminine, and Nicci has changed with it. Vincis: The Art and Science of Winning is a comprehensive look through the m62 I vincis method for presentations, and Nicci's personal experience in public speaking of all kinds, from Eulogies to stand-up. It uses a combination of hard science and years of presenting experience to produce a simple but revolutionary guide to presentations and public speaking. The book also contains the current version of m62 I vincis's Objective Quality Standards, a rigorous set of rules based in cognitive psychology that guides every decision made by M62 in a presentation. Covering every step in her process, from honing the right message to effective and impressive design, Nicci explains, in simple terms, what she's spent decades learning. This book will appeal to all, from the beginner to the expert who's still willing to pick up tips.

Linear Optimization for Business: Theory and practical application
This book takes a unique approach to linear optimization by focusing on the underlying principles and business applications of a topic more often taught from a mathematical and computational perspective. By shifting the perspective away from heavy math, students learn how optimization can be used to drive decision making in real world business settings. The book does not shy away from the theory underlying linear optimization but rather focuses on ensuring students understand the logic without getting caught up in proving theorems. Plenty of examples, applications and case studies are included to help bridge the gap between the theory and the way it plays out in practice. The author has also included several Excel spreadsheets, showing worked-out models of linear optimization that have been used to drive decisions ranging from configuring a police force to purchasing crude oil and media planning. How can the routes and pricing structures of airlines be optimized? How much should be invested in the prevention and punishment of crimes? These are everyday problems that can be solved using linear optimization, and this book shows students just how to do that. It will prove a useful, math-free resource for all students of management science and operations research.

Strategic Management of Business-Critical Information Assets
Information management is the practice of managing information assets to ensure organizations realize their value and minimize their liabilities. The failure rate of individuals in information management positions is high, as is the risk to organizations that do not manage their business-critical information. Managing information as a capital asset means a radical shift in how both the business and the information professionals manage information by putting information assets front and center as a core business function rather than a backroom or support operation. Strategic Management of Business-Critical Information Assets is an essential research book that highlights key issues, explains concepts and consequences, and shares common experience and examples to help guide an organization through the transformation process of organizing and managing their information assets strategically. Highlighting topics such as cost management, information cultures, and security, this book is ideally designed for business professionals, information practitioners, information policy advocates, enterprise architects, managers, tech professionals, researchers, and academicians.

The Connectivity of Innovation in the Construction Industry
The construction industry is currently experiencing accelerating developments concerning societal demands along with project complexity, internationalization and digitalization. In an attempt to grasp the consequences of these demands on productivity and innovation, this edited book addresses how innovation is likely to take place with a more long-term perspective on the construction sector. While existing literature focuses on organizational discontinuity and fragmentation as the main reasons for the apparent lack of innovation in the industry, this book highlights the connectivity of construction actors, resources and activities as fundamental for understanding how innovation takes place.Through 15 empirically grounded chapters, the book shows how innovation is part of construction processes on various levels, including project, firm and industry, and that these innovation processes are characterized by organizational and technological connectivity over time. Written by European business management scholars, the chapters cover empirical cases and examples from both a multi-organizational and a multi-international perspective in terms of covering the viewpoints of different industry actors and the contexts of several different European countries including: Sweden, Norway, the UK, Italy, France, Hungary and Poland. By illustrating how connectivity is part of innovation processes in the creation of single-product innovations, of various innovations within and across projects, as well as a fundamental aspect of the processes in which innovations cross nations, the book provides a new angle on how to understand construction innovation and where the industry might (or needs to) be heading next. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in construction management, project management, engineering management, innovation studies, business and management studies.

Management for Scientists
Scientific progress - from creating better medicines to building better bridges or designing improved technology networks - can lead to intriguing business opportunities, but business expertise is not always a natural companion to scientific excellence. Scientists require a nuanced understanding of the modern business environment to successfully navigate the commercial world and maximise the economic potential of their ideas. Management for Scientists explores the core theories and practices in management studies today in a context applicable to those working in the scientific industries. Essential business concepts covered include corporate strategy and business planning, organisation structure, management and operations, and labour and human resources, and these are all viewed through the prism of building, maintaining and developing a scientific business in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, engineering, maths, and computing sectors. Chapters feature a range of real-world examples from modern science-driven businesses, presented by experienced scientists with demonstrated strategic and economic business expertise.

Visual and Multimodal Research in Organization and Management Studies
This volume brings together two hitherto disparate domains of scholarly inquiry: organization and management studies on the one hand, and the study of visual and multimodal communication on the other. Within organization and management studies it has been recognized that organizational reality and communication are becoming increasingly visual, and, more generally, multimodal, whether in digital form or otherwise. Within multimodality studies it has been noted that many forms of contemporary communication are deeply influenced by organizational and managerial communication, as formerly formal and bureaucratic types of communication increasingly adopt promotional language and multimodal document presentation. Visual and Multimodal Research in Organization and Management Studies integrates these two domains of research in a way that will benefit both. In particular, it conceptually and empirically connects recent insights from visual and multimodality studies to ongoing discussions in organization and management theory. Throughout, the book shows how a visual/multimodal lens enriches and extends what we already know about organization, organizations, and practices of organizing, but also how concepts from organization and management studies can be highly productive in further developing insights on visual and multimodal communication. Due to its essentially interdisciplinary objectives, the book will prove inspiring for academics and scholars of management, the sociology of organizations as well as related disciplines such as applied linguistics and visual studies.

The natural gas business consists of two major aspects, sourcing and transportation, and distribution has been a growing area of interest to industry, government and academia. With the emphasis on promoting natural gas sector, there is an increasing need to have a well documented book that deals with the business issues, particularly the transportation and distribution of this sector, specifically aimed at petroleum engineers and professionals. Leading in the Age of Innovations: Change of Values and Approaches
Leading in the Age of Innovations centres on the need for a more complex process-relational oriented approach to leadership. The complexity of leadership has grown significantly during the 21st century where the need to adapt to the escalating changes in our society and workplace forms one of the most important prerequisites to succeed. Leading in the Age of Innovations represents the outcomes of the lengthy scientific work that was undertaken for the past 10 years and it is still an ongoing process. This book introduces a new concept of leadership based on the process and relational dimensions which resulted in the development of the Reflective Leadership concept. The new model of leadership provides a unique concept on how to bring together various disciplines and explains the overlapping relations between them. Moreover, the proposed view on leadership reflects the current evolution around the globe highlighting the importance of change and innovation. In organizations, too much focus is on the end product and the technical details of how a product is made and distributed. Less attention is focused on how people interact, and how the human capacity is effectively supported by leaders who, on the other hand, are expected to support a culture of innovation. This behavioural interaction is governed by a set of predictable values and norms. These relationships need to be understood for an organization to prosper and is thus far more important to the leadership process. Leading in the Age of Innovations seeks to establish this understanding and will be key reading to researchers, scholars and practitioners alike in the field of leadership, organizational studies and related disciplines.

By analyzing the complex mechanisms of interactions, this book decrypts and reveals the keys to the success of these devices and to opening innovation in a broad sense. Corporate Citizenship: The role of companies as citizens of the modern world
Private companies and multinationals have been around since the beginning of recorded history. For both good and ill they have done an immense amount to shape human culture around the world. We have just come through a period in history when communist and socialist societies tried to eliminate or severely constrain private enterprise, but companies are now back, big time. Consequently, the question now is: `What is their role in our global economic and social system?' Providing goods and services and making a profit for their shareholders are important, but in that process, they also have responsibilities to their stakeholders and the wider society. Companies are in fact corporate citizens of society; just as individuals are private citizens. They exercise certain rights but also have profound responsibilities. They have to step up as good citizens and use their power and influence to help humanity face the challenges of the future. This book discusses why and how they must do that as a step towards learning to live with modern capitalism.

Organizational Theory and Aesthetic Philosophies
Diverse philosophies constitute the theoretical ground of the study of the aesthetic side of organization. In fact, there is not a single unique philosophy behind the organizational research of the aesthetic dimension of organizational life. Organizational Theory and Aesthetic Philosophies will illustrate and discuss this complex phenomenon, and it will be dedicated to highlight the philosophical basis of the study of aesthetics, art and design in organization. The book distinguishes three principal philosophical sensibilities amongst these philosophies: aesthetic, hermeneutic and performative philosophical sensibility. Each of them is described and critically assessed through the work of philosophers, art theorists, sociologists and social scientists who represent its main protagonists. In this way, the reader will be conducted through the variety of philosophies that constitute a reference for aesthetics and design in organization. The architecture of the book is articulated in two parts in order to provide student and scholars in philosophical aesthetics, in art, in design and in organization studies with an informative and agile instrument for academic research and study.

Transformative Management Education: The Role of the Humanities and Social Sciences
Due to the recent global financial crises, academic business schools have come in for much criticism, having, in the eyes of the public, failed in their responsibility to society by teaching future managers only how to increase their personal gain without any consideration as to their actions' social and cultural consequences. Realising that there is a pressing need to innovate their educational offers accordingly, business schools are beginning to turn to the humanities and social sciences to improve on the understanding and thus the teaching of management. This book is the result of an empirical study conducted at eight academic business schools that either already practise or are beginning to practise linking management education to the humanities and social sciences. Gathered mostly in interviews our research team conducted during site visits to these schools, the material presented shows three major fields of concern: how to shift the focus from instrumental to transformative learning, how to reframe the concept of disciplinary subject matter towards a more relational understanding of knowledge-especially in the light of the impact digitalisation is having on education-and how to address the organisational, as well as the political consequences of management education turning towards the inclusion of the humanities and social sciences strategically. The findings indicate that the humanities and social sciences indeed offer knowledge which can significantly help management education with meeting the challenges of the twenty-first century. Innovating management education by making it part of its program portfolios proves a challenge in and of itself in the face of a university system which still determinedly clings to disciplinary segregation. Reforming management education towards an engagement with fields of knowledge traditionally at best ignored and at worst vilified as being completely useless in the real world may therefore place academic business schools at the forefront of a movement that is beginning to reshape the educational landscape as a whole. This book will be of value to researchers, academics and students in the fields of business, management studies, organisational studies and education studies.

Taking a multimedia approach, it contains practical exercises that will help the reader to achieve greater intuition and develop their capacity for creativity and innovation. The exercises in this book come from over a hundred workshops worldwide in both business and higher education. They include, for example, the Mind Map of Me , an introspective exercise designed to develop trust and confidence in the self and the reader's own intuition. The book opens the field of possibilities to the reader, offering encouragement and motivation to explore new approaches and techniques. Strategic Analytics: Integrating Management Science and Strategy
Defines common ground at the interface of strategy and management science and unites the topics with an original approach vital for strategy students, researchers and managers Strategic Analytics: Integrating Management Science and Strategy combines strategy content with strategy process through the lenses of management science, masterfully defining the common ground that unites both fields. Each chapter starts with the perspective of a certain strategy problem, such as competition, but continues with an explanation of the strategy process using management science tools such as simulation. Facilitating the process of strategic decision making through the lens of management science, the author integrates topics that are usually in conflict for MBAs: strategy and quantitative methods. Strategic Analytics features multiple international real-life case studies and examples, business issues for further research and theory review questions and exercises at the end of each chapter. Strategic Analytics starts by introducing readers to strategic management. It then goes on to cover: managerial capabilities for a complex world; politics, economy, society, technology, and environment; external environments known as exogenous factors (PESTE) and endogenous factors (industry); industry dynamics; industry evolution; competitive advantage; dynamic resource management; organisational design; performance measurement system; the life cycle of organisations from start-ups; maturity for maintaining profitability and growth; and finally, regeneration. Developed from the author's own Strategy Analytics course at Warwick Business School, personal experience as consultant, and in consultation with other leading scholars Uses management science to facilitate the process of strategic decision making Chapters structured with chapter objectives, summaries, short case studies, tables, student exercises, references and management science models Accompanied by a supporting website Aimed at both academics and practitioners, Strategic Analytics is an ideal text for postgraduates and advanced undergraduate students of business and management.

It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy at Work
In this timely manifesto, the authors of the New York Times bestseller Rework broadly reject the prevailing notion that long hours, aggressive hustle, and whatever it takes are required to run a successful business today. In Rework, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson introduced a new path to working effectively. Now, they build on their message with a bold, iconoclastic strategy for creating the ideal company culture-what they call the calm company. Their approach directly attack the chaos, anxiety, and stress that plagues millions of workplaces and hampers billions of workers every day. Long hours, an excessive workload, and a lack of sleep have become a badge of honor for modern professionals. But it should be a mark of stupidity, the authors argue. Sadly, this isn't just a problem for large organizations-individuals, contractors, and solopreneurs are burning themselves out the same way. The answer to better productivity isn't more hours-it's less waste and fewer things that induce distraction and persistent stress. It's time to stop celebrating Crazy, and start celebrating Calm, Fried and Hansson assert. Fried and Hansson have the proof to back up their argument. Calm has been the cornerstone of their company's culture since Basecamp began twenty years ago. Destined to become the management guide for the next generation, It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy at Work is a practical and inspiring distillation of their insights and experiences. It isn't a book telling you what to do. It's a book showing you what they've done-and how any manager or executive no matter the industry or size of the company, can do it too.
