The Oil Kings: How the US, Iran, and Saudi Arabia Changed the Balance of Power in the Middle East
Oil Kings offers the first inside look at how an oil crisis was manipulated by Alan Greenspan, Donald Rumsfeld, and President Ford (hoping to secure his re-election), helping to precipitate the fall of the Shah of Iran in 1979. Andrew Scott Cooper reveals the fatal struggle between the oil kings , both Middle-Eastern and American, as they jockeyed for power, playing games that led directly to the rise of Iran's radical anti-American theocracy, which still exists today. An intrepid investigative reporter, Andrew Scott Cooper is the first to access newly declassified papers, and to interview key people who formulated US foreign poilicy in that period. Carefully connecting up the dots, he brilliantly reconstructs the history of that vexed decade when the modern world was changed forever.

Integrating South and East Asia: Economics of Regional Cooperation and Development
Economic ties between South and East Asia can be traced back to the time of the ancient Silk Road. In the recent past, these sub-regions have made great progress towards reviving close economic links among their countries, fuelled by domestic reforms and emergence of regional production networks. More recently, bilateral and regional-level initiatives have also largely enhanced integration. If such initiatives succeed, could these sub-regions grow to dominate global trade? This book evaluates the economic implications of increasing cooperation between the two regions, providing empirical analyses for informed policy decisions and improved outcomes. Exploring the role of market forces as well as domestic and regional policies, it examines how integration helps in spurring inclusive economic development in small economies. It also focuses on the prospects for India's integration with East Asia, elaborating on its role as the biggest driver of integration in the sub-region.

Resetting the International Monetary (Non)System
International financial crises have plagued the world in recent decades, including the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s, the East Asian crisis of the late twentieth century, and the global financial crisis of 2007-09. One of the basic problems faced during these crises is the lack of adequate preventive mechanisms, as well as insufficient instruments to finance countries in crisis and to overcome their over-indebtedness. Resetting the International Monetary (Non)System provides an analysis of the global monetary system and the necessary reforms that it should undergo to play an active role in the twenty-first century and proposes a comprehensive yet evolutionary reform of the system. Criticising the ad hoc framework- a (non)system - that has evolved following the breakdown of the Bretton Woods arrangement in the early 1970's, Resetting the International Monetary (Non)System places a special focus on the asymmetries that emerging and developing countries face, analysing the controversial management of crises by the International Monetary Fund and proposing a consistent set of reform proposals to design a better system of international monetary cooperation. Policy orientated and structured to deal in a sequential way with the issues involved, it suggests provision of international liquidity through a system that mixes the multicurrency arrangement with a more active use of the IMF's Special Drawing Rights; stronger mechanisms of macroeconomic policy cooperation, including greater cooperation in exchange rate management and freedom to manage capital flows; additional automatic balance-of-payments financing facilities and the complementary use of swap and regional arrangements; a multilateral sovereign debt workout mechanism; and major reforms of the system's governance.

The European Union and Europe's New Regionalism: The Challenge of Enlargement, Neighborhood, and Globalization
This book presents a new approach to studying the European Union's regional and global relevance. It recasts into a dynamic perspective the three most significant systemic processes that define the EU as a regionalist project: its enlargement, neighborhood, and mega-regional policies. The book argues that these processes collectively demonstrate a dynamic shift of the core tenets of European regionalism from an inward-looking process of region building to an open, selective system of global interactions.

Providing fresh perspectives on managing expatriates in the changing host country of China, this book investigates expatriate management from a language and identity angle. The authors' multilingual and multicultural backgrounds allow them to offer a solid view on the best practices towards managing diverse groups of expatriates, including Western, Indian, and ethnic Chinese employees. With carefully considered analysis which incorporates micro and macro perspectives, together with indigenous Chinese and Western viewpoints, this book explores topics that include the importance of the host country language, expatriate adjustment, ethnic identity confirmation, acceptance and identity. The book presents a longitudinal yet contemporary snapshot of the language, culture, and identity realities that multinational corporation subsidiary employees are facing in China in the present decade (2006-2016). Which lines on the map matter most?It is time to reimagine how life is organized on Earth. We're accelerating into a future shaped less by countries than by connectivity. A world in which the most connected powers, and people, will win.In Connectography, Parag Khanna guides us through the emerging global network civilization in which mega-cities compete over connectivity and borders are increasingly irrelevant. He travels from Ukraine to Iran, Mongolia to North Korea, London to Dubai and the Arctic Circle to the South China Sea - all to show how twenty-first-century conflict is a tug-of-war over pipelines and internet cables, advanced technologies and market access.Yet Connectography offers a hopeful vision of the future. Khanna argues that new energy discoveries and innovations have eliminated the need for resource wars, global financial assets are being deployed to build productive infrastructure that can reduce inequality, and frail regions such as Africa and the Middle East are unscrambling their fraught colonial borders through ambitious new transportation corridors and power grids.Beneath the chaos of a world that appears to be falling apart is a new foundation of connectivity pulling it together.

Doing Corporate Business in Russia: From Civil Theory to Practice
The right to do business in Russia is granted by the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which states that everyone shall have the right to freely use his or her abilities and property for entrepreneurial or any other economic activity not prohibited by the law. In the Russian Civil Code business activity is understood as an independent activity, performed at one's own risk, aimed at systematically deriving profit from the use of the property, the sale of commodities, the performance of work or the rendering of services by the persons, registered in this capacity in conformity with the law-established procedure. Doing Corporate Business in Russia attempts to examine not only the theoretical aspects of Russian business procedures, but also to show specific nature of their implementation. This book offers an examination of the process of establishing, functioning and termination of various types of business corporations in the Russian Federation, and gives readers a thorough understanding of business in Russia. It clarifies the legal features of management, and interaction with contractors and public authorities. It also touches upon the issues of legal linguistics and its role in legal practice. Knowledge in this field enables the reader to get a sense of the correct interpretation of the content of legal documents, proper definitions of terms and of the potential violations of the rights of business entities based on improper understanding of normative language. The book will be useful to scientists and practicing lawyers, students and anyone interested in the specifics of corporate business entities and Russian business climate.

The Rise of Big Government: How Egalitarianism Conquered America
Americans tend to believe that their country is very different from Europe. Yet over the past half century they have imported and embraced the most transformative social idea of modern Scandinavia: egalitarianism. Today, the United States is more like Sweden than it is different, dedicated to economic redistribution and to vigorously defending their big government. What price, morally and economically, are today's Americans willing to pay to preserve their egalitarian welfare state? Are they willing to turn life into a fiscal cost item? Will they sacrifice their children's future prosperity to defend their entitlements? The Rise of Big Government: How Egalitarianism Conquered America pursues the answer to these questions by going back to the ideological origins of the modern, egalitarian welfare state. Specifically, the book asks why this unity has been able to set such deep roots in the United States, a country that is often perceived as fundamentally different when it comes to the role of government in the economy. It is shown that there are more similarities than differences between the welfare state in the United States and its Swedish template . This book is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding how the egalitarian ideology conquered the United States, and who seek to gain a deeper understanding of its strength, its resiliency - and the problems it faces for the future.

The Brics-Lawyers' Guide to Global Cooperation
The term 'BRICS' is an acronym made from the initials of the five countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The concept was originally coined in 2001 as 'BRIC' in the context of an economic report. Eight years later, the first BRIC Summit, attended by the leaders of the four countries, was held in Yekaterinburg (Russia). Having been joined by South Africa in 2011, the BRICS evolved from an idea drawn from an economic viewpoint to their later establishment as a 'dialogue and cooperation platform' in political terms. Initially, the BRICS were hailed as an emerging driver of global change due to their strong economic growth in the aftermath of the financial crisis. More recently, their relative diversity, as well as the internal political problems faced by the BRICS countries, led to increasing doubts about their ability to have a lasting impact on the governance of global affairs. In short, the relatively young history of the BRICS displays the complex interplay between economic and political factors, which are both subject to fluctuations in accordance with the tides of change. Scholarship and academic debate so far have also reflected these changes from either an economic or a political perspective. But it is between politics and economics that law is called upon to make an important contribution. Against the background of the cyclical political and economic fluctuations, the law's contribution lies precisely in the ability to provide stability and predictability through the rule of law. Generally, and with a few notable exceptions, the role of law, legal norms, institutions and processes has not yet been duly considered, both in the context of BRICS cooperation, as well as in the relevant scholarship --

A penetrating critique tracing how under-regulated trading between European and U.S. banks led to the 2008 financial crisis-with a prescription for preventing another meltdown There have been numerous books examining the 2008 financial crisis from either a U.S. or European perspective. Tamim Bayoumi is the first to explain how the Euro crisis and U.S. housing crash were, in fact, parasitically intertwined. Starting in the 1980s, Bayoumi outlines the cumulative policy errors that undermined the stability of both the European and U.S. financial sectors, highlighting the catalytic role played by European mega banks that exploited lax regulation to expand into the U.S. market and financed unsustainable bubbles on both continents. U.S. banks increasingly sold sub-par loans to under-regulated European and U.S. shadow banks and, when the bubbles burst, the losses whipsawed back to the core of the European banking system. A much-needed, fresh look at the origins of the crisis, Bayoumi's analysis concludes that policy makers are ignorant of what still needs to be done both to complete the cleanup and to prevent future crises.
