Implication Analysis for Biotechnology Regulation and Management in Africa: Baseline Studies for Assessment of Potential Effects of Genetically Modified Maize (Zea mays L.) Cultivation in Ghanaian Agriculture
Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are traded as staple crops on the world market. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety gives sovereign rights to each country to implement its own regulatory regime to protect their landscapes and agricultural heritage. Data on the receiving environment for countries in Africa are limited. How would it be possible to maintain the options of agriculture with or without GMO, and organic farming? Decisions require not only lab-testing of crops but also data on the different agricultural structures, field sizes, and socioeconomic conditions. This book presents an introduction into the topic, experiences from biosafety research executed in the EU and most important, insight into small-scale African agriculture that is of highest relevance for food security of a population majority. The data substantiates, that crop purity as a condition to maintain cultivation options and access export markets require highest attention and solutions that still have to be found.

The Concept of the Relevant Product Market: Between Demand-side Substitutability and Supply-side Substitutability in Competition Law
The proper definition of the relevant product market still is the lynchpin of competition law: defining the market too wide makes it impossible to capture the companies' behavioural margins that are the result of market power and are not neutralized by competition; defining the market too narrow creates market power and forces undertakings under the application of Art. 82 EC, Art. 2 ECMR, 19 German Competition Act. In European and German competition law the aspect of demand-side substitutability has been the most important criterion. The meaning of potential competition and especially of supply-side substitutability has not been systematically grasped. The book therefore re-thinks the relevant questions of proper market definition.

Teaching Business Culture in the Italian Context: Global and Intercultural Challenges
Italy often suffers from its cultural heritage. Certain themes have passed into stereotype and popular consumption, while others have been overlooked. This volume discusses teaching choices and topics on the implementation of a US study abroad business programme in Italy. The authors first have a look at business questions, then at culture through a chapter on the fashion industry. The final section focuses on methods in teaching Italian culture, language, history, and intercultural communication. This volume highlights non-traditional aspects of Italian culture, and focuses on the intercultural dimension of teaching and learning for study abroad students. The points of view found herein should promote a more contextualized and contemporary view of what studying Italy can be about.

Creating Public Trust: An Organisational Perspective
The aim of this book is to outline an organisational perspective in exploring public trust. A public management model, adopted for ongoing considerations, covers both changes in public organisations themselves, namely in their internal environment, as well as changes spurred by dynamic shifts in the external environment, such as the management system as a whole. The study attempts to demonstrate that efficient functioning of public organisations has a significant impact on shaping relationships based on trust within and between organisations. It also presents the concepts of corruption, fraud and trust. The research completed with regard to the organisational perspective of creating public trust is a contribution to the advancement of organisational theory.

Successful Television Management: the Hybrid Approach
This book explores a hybrid model of broadcasting and takes a close look at public TV broadcasting operating in a market-driven environment. While media and media institutions play an important role in democratic societies, their management is a complex process and has to coordinate the various demands of the public, the owners, advertisers and society. Managing media institutions also has to take into account technological developments, changes in the regulatory framework and social trends. Whereas media performance reflects social developments, their management often represents catching the uncatchable: providing for the public good and offering attractive market products.

The book deals with the use of clean technologies and in particular of electronic mobility from the perspective of the empirical capital market. The author sheds light on the developments of economic research in the past 20 years, identifies research gaps and analyses them in detail if data is sufficient. Based on the example of rare earths, he presents the impact of future raw material shortages when using mobile electronic technologies and proposes possible solutions for all market players from a financial research perspective. In addition, the book presents a first assessment of the industry's innovation development by means of the capital-market oriented evaluation of corporate cooperations in the field of electronic mobility.

European Reformism, Nazism and Traditionalism: Economic Thought in Imperial Japan, 1930-1945
This study analyses the economic thought in Japan in the critical period from 1930 to 1945. It pays particular attention to how the contemporary Japanese received European and American ideas about the transformation of capitalism from a liberal to controlled or managed economy, and how they applied them to the economic system in Japan. They were interested in English thoughts for the reform of capitalism by the evolutionary ways: those of J. M. Keynes in his The End of Laissez-Faire, reformism of G.D.H. Cole and others. German thought of W. Rathenau and W. Sombart attracted the attention of reform-minded Japanese. The influence of National Socialism on them was far-reaching. This study analyses in detail how they accepted Nazism and amalgamated it into a traditional style of totalitarianism under the emperor system.

Reinventing Art of Everyday Making
The word `everyday` is usually loaded with decidedly negative connotations. However, domestic everyday activities are not merely routine work, but also include complex, demanding tasks to solve. Even though everyday problem solving does not necessarily follow logical pathways, it is sensible and effective in handling practical problems. The studies presented in this book explore domestic everyday making, in terms of the kinds of cognitive, social, and practical tasks being faced and the types of skills needed in solving these tasks. The studies also illustrate the different research strategies appropriate to the investigation of the art and skills of domestic everyday making. The target audience of this book includes researchers and students of family and consumer studies, home economics and craft sciences, cultural studies and sociology. Because of the twofold aim of the book, it can be used as a textbook for both content as well as methodological studies.

Politicizing Consumer Choice: Ethical Dimensions of Consumerism in the United States
This book investigates various forms of political and ethical consumerism in the United States and delivers a comprehensive conceptualization of the consumer's role in the marketplace. Both aspects, the potential impact of market-based activism on corporations in America and the socio-structural dynamics that may prevent the possibility of far-reaching social change through forms of alternative consumerism, are equally important in this regard. The historical ties between politics and consumption in America, and the diminishing role of the government as a regulatory force in the market since the end of Fordism, has spawned a unique form of consumer politics directed at the corporate world. The underlying question to be answered is whether the consumer is truly a force to be reckoned with.

American Patriotism and Corporate Identity in Automobile Advertising: What's Good for General Motors Is Good for the Country and Vice Versa?
The triumphal march of the automobile and its connection with American culture have often been acknowledged in scholarship. By contrast, the culture-specific, value-oriented advertising strategies of the most important US carmaker General Motors (GM) in its home market have received less attention, especially in American Studies. This study focuses on the connection between GM products and America and the fundamental values represented by politics, business, and society. The author examines which textual and visual strategies GM uses in its image advertising to establish and maintain its patriotic American image. He argues that GM's advertising campaigns follow a patriotic leitmotif and are consistently in line with American core values, often generating new patriotic ideas.

Financial Return Risk and the Effect on Shareholder Wealth: How M&A Announcements and Banking Crisis Events Affect Stock Mean Returns and Stock Return Risk- A Compendium of Five Empirical Studies across Selective Industries
This dissertation comprises five studies analyzing daily stock returns of listed firms. Studies one and two shed light on corporate diversification through M&A and how related risk dynamics affect shareholder wealth. Carrying over the risk analysis methodology `GARCH' to external events in studies three and four, the author individually scrutinizes the adverse implications of bank failures and bailouts in the 2007-2009 financial crisis. Finding opposing return shocks, he identifies the limits of the `symmetric' GARCH. As observed of the behavior of stock return data, volatility reacts asymmetrically to positive and negative return shocks. The advanced EGARCH incorporates this so called `leverage effect'. Applying the EGARCH in his final study, the author can simultaneously scrutinize the adverse bank events with an appropriate econometric foundation.

Multi-national and intercultural services organisations and the integration in front of global clients
This book investigates the business and bottom-line effects of intercultural and interdisciplinary collaboration in international services organisations. Caused by the organisation-specific separation of companies into divisions up to the client front the collaboration often proves to be difficult, cultural differences emerge. This occurs even more when services companies have to work together on an international level caused by outsourcing and offshoring. The book investigates the influences of intercultural collaboration and reflects the intercultural aspects of collaborating across countries, especially by out-sourcing and offshoring services from Western hemispheres to India, Poland, Romania or Chile. This volume concludes the series.

European Business Cycle Convergence: Portfolio Similarity and a Declining Home Bias of Private Investors
Is the euro area getting closer with regard to business cycles? The study investigates the linkage between business cycle convergence and financial portfolio choice for a panel of 18 European countries. For this purpose an index is constructed which measures the similarity of investment portfolios. The idea is that financial portfolio choice has an impact on business cycles and contributes to convergence via the consumption-wealth linkage. The background of the analysis is the International Asset Pricing Model (IAPM). The results of fixed effects GMM TSLS estimations confirm the linkage. The effect is higher for country-pairs that are built by one euro area member and one member outside the euro area.

The Emergence of Developmental States from a New Institutionalist Perspective: A Comparative Analysis of East Asia and Central Asia
This book addresses the relevance of institutional arrangements in East Asian developmental states for the Central Asian countries. It is argued that the Central Asian transition countries share crucial similarities with the economies of East Asia. By a detailed analysis of historical developments in Northeast and Southeast Asia, a coherent and comprehensive model of the developmental state on the basis of the New Institutional Economics is developed in this book. This model is applied to Central Asia by a comparative study on the basis of semi-structured interviews that were carried out in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Both Central Asian countries show notable similarities but also crucial differences to the East Asian developmental states.

Collective Bargaining and Changing Industrial Relations in China.: Lessons from the U.S. and Germany
This study focuses on the status and prospects of collective bargaining in China based on lessons learned from the post-war United States and Germany. The author regards collective bargaining as a type of core wage regulation that emerged from production regimes at the factory level and from economic and labor policies of the state. This analysis compares the production regimes and the state-labor-capital relations in China today with the U.S. and German models in order to identify the missing links as well as potential driving forces in the current system of collective contract in China. Finally, the author proposes an ideal model of collective bargaining in China, one that offers solutions to a more just and sustainable trajectory of industrial development and that tailors to the power status of the major actors in industrial relations.

Towards an Ethical-ecological Assessment of Companies in Nigeria: An Empirical Inquiry into the Relevance or Otherwise of the Frankfurt-Hohenheim Guidelines for the Ethical Assessment of Companies in the Nigerian Context- A Case of the Nigerian Microfinan
Multilateral evidence has continued to show that the conspicuous absence of reputable ethical-ecological criteria for evaluating companies and businesses in Nigeria is not only a lamentable disservice to the Nigerian people; but does not augur well for the Nigerian economy in particular and society at large. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) concept and practice has been notoriously inadequate in meeting this challenge. The CSR, which came to Nigeria via the pressures and ire drawn by the rogue activities of multi-national oil concerns in the Nigeria Delta, quickly dissipated its reputational capital and fossilized on its pretensions by assuming a paternalistic character of a philanthropic nature in the policy philosophies of many companies in Nigeria. The results of this absence have been catastrophic. The Niger Delta became an ecological wasteland thanks to unethical and unsupervised rapacity convoked there by the oil companies. Many Nigerian families have been chaperoned into poverty thanks to the perennial failure of many Nigerian banks and financial institutions, which is predicated on massive fraud and other sharp practices of bank officials. Need we talk about the costs in lives and limbs of the unethical practices of many companies in almost all sectors of the Nigerian economy, whose activities have been destroying the ecological integrity of our environment; constantly degrading the dignity and human rights of their employees, and endangering the lives and wellbeing of consumers across the country?

Commercialization of Smallholder Horticultural Farming in Kenya: Poverty, Gender, and Institutional Arrangements
This study assesses income and poverty effects of vegetable commercialization in Kenya with a special focus on gender issues and evaluates the performance of institutional arrangements that link small producers to the high-value vegetable supply chains. Using econometrics analysis of two rounds of rural household survey, the study reveals that the participation of smallholders in the domestic and export vegetable markets is declining. Weather risks, high costs of inputs and unskilled labour as well as erratic vegetable prices contribute to the declining trend. The impact evaluation of market participation reveals that households supplying the export market have a higher per capita income. The examination of gender roles indicates that the improvement of land productivity and the promotion of women's access to agricultural training and extension services might enhance their market participation. The analysis of vegetable contractual arrangements indicates that the governance structure is important to the profitability and hence the sustainability of farmer-trader relationships.
