Providing Global Public Goods: Managing Globalization
Elaborating on the concepts first introduced in Global Public Goods, this book addresses the long overdue issue of how to adjust the concept of public goods to today's economic and political realities. The production of global public goods requires the orchestration of initiatives by a large number of diverse actors across different levels and sectors. It may require the collaboration of governments, business and civil society, and in most cases it almost certainly calls for an effective linkage of the local, national, regional, and global levels. In light of today's new realities, this book examines a series of managerial and political challenges that pertain to the design and implementation of production strategies and the monitoring and evaluation of global public goods provision. As participatory decision-making enhances the political support for - and thus the effectiveness of - certain policy decisions, this volume offers suggestions on a number of pragmatic policy reforms for bringing the global public more into public policy making on global issues. Nine case studies examine the importance of the global public good concept from the viewpoint of developing countries, exploring how and where the concerns of the poor and the rich overlap.Providing Global Public Goods offers important and timely suggestions on how to move in a more feasible and systematic way towards a fairer process of globalization that works in the interests of all.

Economic Report on Africa: Governing Development in Africa, the Role of the State in Economic Transformation: 2011
Many African economies are still characterized by a heavy reliance on the primary sector, high vulnerability to external shocks, jobless growth and slow progress towards social development. It is essential for African countries to promote economic diversification and structural transformation as a means to accelerate and sustain broad-based and shared high employment-generating growth. This Report highlights that failure of earlier state-led and market-driven approaches to promoting economic transformation points to the need for fostering long-term investment, rapid and sustained economic growth, equity and social development within inclusive, transparent and comprehensive development frameworks.

Growth Divergences: Explaining Differences in Economic Performance
Unlike the 1950s and 1960s, when the rising tide of economic growth lifted most economies, the last three decades have been characterized by a paradox of greater international economic integration as well as divergent economic growth performances. The growing North-South gap of the last two centuries has been moderated recently by the better economic performance of China, India and others in East Asia, implying the expansion of the 'middle income' category. This volume of analytical studies seeks to explain these major differences in economic performance in recent decades by considering the dynamics of international economic growth, diverging growth rates, economic structures, and sources of demand, successes and collapses in the developing world, and recent episodes of real income stagnation of countries. Several chapters critically review recent misleading claims and the conventional wisdom regarding the relationship of trade liberalization, financial development, development, aid, infrastructure spending, violent conflict, good governance, and industrial policy to economic growth.

Millennium Development Goal 8: Delivering on the Global Partnership for Achieving the Millennium Development Goals, MDG Gap Task Force Report 2008
The present report was prepared by the MDG Gap Task Force which was created to improve the monitoring of the MDG 8 by leveraging inter-agency coordination. The objective of the report is to identify remaining obstacles to accelerate progress in the achieving the targets contained in MDG 8. It highlights the degree of compliance to the commitments made by developed and developing countries with a view to strengthening the global partnership for development. The main message of the report is that while there has been progress on several counts, important gaps remain in delivering on the global commitments in the area of aid, trade, debt relief, and access to new technologies and affordable essential medicines.

The least developed countries report 2012: harnessing remittances and diaspora knowledge for productive capacities
This Report reviews the LDCs' recent economic performance and examines how to enhance developmental impact of remittances and tap into the knowledge pool of its citizens abroad. Given the increasing magnitude of remittances in LDCs, the Report explores both the beneficial as well as possible adverse impacts of this type of private external flow. While remittances are the most visible effect of migration, there are other forms of Diaspora engagement within the home country such as Diaspora knowledge networks that can facilitate technological catch-up in LDCs and therefore enhance development of productive capacities. Through innovative forms of network-based industrial policy, LDCs could offset some of the adverse impacts of brain drain on their economies. The Report concludes with a policy review section containing lessons from international experiences in this area of interest to LDCs.

The Sustainability of Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: Challenges and Opportunities
The original aim of this study was to serve as an input for the Regional Preparatory Conference of Latin America and the Caribbean for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 23 and 24 October 2001. The first part of the document reports on regional economic performance, focusing in particular on economic growth and public finances. It continues with more specific proposals and suggests what kind of role the region might play in a global alliance. Ultimately is clear that the region has only recently embarked upon efforts to identify the main problems and challenges. The regional overview thus presented has also served as a basis for the Rio de Janeiro Platform of Action on the Road to Johannesburg 2002 and the Latin American and Caribbean Initiative for Sustainable Development
