'Lecture Notes on Continuous Time Finance in Economics' provides modern treatments to five key areas of finance theories in Merton's collection of continuous time work, viz. portfolio selection and capital market theory, optimum consumption and intertemporal portfolio selection, option pricing theory, contingent claim analysis of corporate finance, intertemporal CAPM, and complete market general equilibrium. Where appropriate, lectures notes are supplemented by other classical text such as Ingersoll (1987) and materials on stochastic calculus.

In addition, the relation between CEO turnover and changes in compensation policies since the financial crisis is discussed. A concluding section presents some fresh empirical evidence deriving from an up-to-date database of traits of CEOs operating in the largest European banks. The Dark Side of Valuation (paperback)
Financial professionals have long faced the challenge of accurately valuing companies that are difficult to value using conventional methodologies. Years ago, this challenge was most keenly felt in the dot-com industries, and many professionals fell victim to the dark side, creating values that were simply unsustainable. Now, amidst today's global financial crisis, the same challenge applies to a far wider spectrum of enterprises and assets, ranging from Asian equities to mortgage-backed securities, financial services firms like Lehman to real estate firms like Sears. In The Dark Side of Valuation, the world's top expert on valuation brings together today's best practices for accurately valuing young, distressed, and complex businesses. Aswath Damodaran has thoroughly revised this book, broadening its perspective to consider all companies that resist easy valuation. He covers the entire corporate lifecycle, from idea and nascent growth companies to those in decline and distress; and offers specific guidance for valuing infrastructure, real estate, technology, human capital, commodity, and cyclical firms. Damodaran places special emphasis on the financial sector, illuminating the implications of today's radically changed credit markets for valuation. Along the way, he addresses valuation questions that have suddenly gained urgency, ranging from Are US treasuries risk-free? to How do you value assets in highly illiquid markets?

Doing Corporate Business in Russia: From Civil Theory to Practice
The right to do business in Russia is granted by the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which states that everyone shall have the right to freely use his or her abilities and property for entrepreneurial or any other economic activity not prohibited by the law. In the Russian Civil Code business activity is understood as an independent activity, performed at one's own risk, aimed at systematically deriving profit from the use of the property, the sale of commodities, the performance of work or the rendering of services by the persons, registered in this capacity in conformity with the law-established procedure. Doing Corporate Business in Russia attempts to examine not only the theoretical aspects of Russian business procedures, but also to show specific nature of their implementation. This book offers an examination of the process of establishing, functioning and termination of various types of business corporations in the Russian Federation, and gives readers a thorough understanding of business in Russia. It clarifies the legal features of management, and interaction with contractors and public authorities. It also touches upon the issues of legal linguistics and its role in legal practice. Knowledge in this field enables the reader to get a sense of the correct interpretation of the content of legal documents, proper definitions of terms and of the potential violations of the rights of business entities based on improper understanding of normative language. The book will be useful to scientists and practicing lawyers, students and anyone interested in the specifics of corporate business entities and Russian business climate.

Islamic Macroeconomics: A Model for Efficient Government, Stability and Full Employment
The economic model in many developed and developing countries is characterized by a `Big Government' whose intervention limits free competition in the capital, commodity, and labour markets. Since 2009, to remedy mass-unemployment, many leading countries have been locked into an expansionary fiscal policy, repressive money policy, record public and private debts, explosive asset prices, unstable exchange rates, and heightened uncertainties. Likewise, many developing countries have been unable to reach autonomous development despite their vast territories and natural resources, remaining dependent on foreign aid without which they will fall into economic disorder. Islamic Macroeconomics proposes an Islamic model that offers significant prospects for economic growth and durable macroeconomic stability, and which is immune to the defects of the economic models prevailing both in developed and developing countries. An Islamic model advocates a limited government confined to its natural duties of defence, justice, education, health, infrastructure, regulation, and welfare of the vulnerable population. It prohibits interest-based debt and money, and requires full liberalization of all markets including labour, financial, commodity, trade and foreign exchange markets. The government should be Sharia-compliant in its taxation power and regulatory intervention; it ought to reduce unproductive spending in favour of productive spending. This book is essential reading for students and academics of Islamic economics and finance, economists, practitioners and researchers.

The Globalisation of Indian Business: Cross Border Mergers and Acquisitions in Indian Manufacturing
There are a good number of studies in the Indian context, which have examined the general trends in post-merger performance. However, this is the first book to attempt an analysis of the aforementioned issues, (that is, impact on technological performance, production efficiency and market competition), in detail, using appropriate statistical and econometric techniques. The book takes a comparative perspective, involving domestic and cross-border deals. The author analyses the changing nature of foreign investment in the form of mergers and acquisitions vis-a-vis domestic deals, using a new database on mergers and acquisitions. More specifically, she provides an insight into whether the consolidation strategy adopted by firms has helped them to achieve their desired objectives in terms of improvement in technology, enhancement of efficiency and market power in the context of increasing mergers and acquisitions in India, especially since the 1990s. The book is of importance within the context of Competition Law, which aims to maintain competition and protect consumers' interests without harming that of the producers'. It analyses the role of cross-border mergers and acquisitions in changing the level of concentration and its policy implications and while it cautions the regulators to rethink the efficiency defense argument and become more vigilant on monopolies creation, it also suggests that firms should reconsider their post-merger integration strategy, since consolidation has not led to a sustainable increase in market shares of the surviving firms.

Applied Quantitative Finance
This volume provides practical solutions and introduces recent theoretical developments in risk management, pricing of credit derivatives, quantification of volatility and copula modeling. This third edition is devoted to modern risk analysis based on quantitative methods and textual analytics to meet the current challenges in banking and finance. It includes 14 new contributions and presents a comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment of cutting-edge methods and topics, such as collateralized debt obligations, the high-frequency analysis of market liquidity, and realized volatility. The book is divided into three parts: Part 1 revisits important market risk issues, while Part 2 introduces novel concepts in credit risk and its management along with updated quantitative methods. The third part discusses the dynamics of risk management and includes risk analysis of energy markets and for cryptocurrencies. Digital assets, such as blockchain-based currencies, have become popular but are theoretically challenging when based on conventional methods. Among others, it introduces a modern text-mining method called dynamic topic modeling in detail and applies it to the message board of Bitcoins. The unique synthesis of theory and practice supported by computational tools is reflected not only in the selection of topics, but also in the fine balance of scientific contributions on practical implementation and theoretical concepts. This link between theory and practice offers theoreticians insights into considerations of applicability and, vice versa, provides practitioners convenient access to new techniques in quantitative finance. Hence the book will appeal both to researchers, including master and PhD students, and practitioners, such as financial engineers. The results presented in the book are fully reproducible and all quantlets needed for calculations are provided on an accompanying website. The Quantlet platform quantlet.de, quantlet.com, quantlet.org is an integrated QuantNet environment consisting of different types of statistics-related documents and program codes. Its goal is to promote reproducibility and offer a platform for sharing validated knowledge native to the social web. QuantNet and the corresponding Data-Driven Documents-based visualization allows readers to reproduce the tables, pictures and calculations inside this Springer book.

Finance, Society and Sustainability: How to Make the Financial System Work for the Economy, People and Planet: 2017
This book is a critical analysis of the impact of the financial system on the economy, society and the natural environment. It cuts through the noise to looks at its purpose, its activities, and what it does in practice. Unlike other books that cover the last financial crisis and the risk of another one; this book is about the consequence of the financial system continuing in its current form. It argues that the financial system is a construct of flawed economic theories, designed in the hope that the market will efficiently allocate society's capital. Instead, the finance sector allocates savings and investment to maximize its own revenues, with resulting collateral damage to the economy, society and the environment. Although governments try to preserve and regulate the existing system, it is being replaced by a new system driven by technological innovation. The book describes the opportunities this presents for a renaissance of the financial system to actually meet the needs of society, and to re-engineer our economy to avoid environmental crisis. The book is for anyone who would like to understand the finance system's purpose, what it does in practice and its impact on the real world. For those working in the industry it provides an overview of the system, their place within it, and how to bring about change. For students and academics it provides a valuable critique of the financial system, and the theories on which it is based. For financial policymakers and regulators it identifies key challenges in their activities.

Multivariate Methods and Forecasting with IBM (R) SPSS (R) Statistics
This is the second of a two-part guide to quantitative analysis using the IBM SPSS Statistics software package; this volume focuses on multivariate statistical methods and advanced forecasting techniques. More often than not, regression models involve more than one independent variable. For example, forecasting methods are commonly applied to aggregates such as inflation rates, unemployment, exchange rates, etc., that have complex relationships with determining variables. This book introduces multivariate regression models and provides examples to help understand theory underpinning the model. The book presents the fundamentals of multivariate regression and then moves on to examine several related techniques that have application in business-orientated fields such as logistic and multinomial regression. Forecasting tools such as the Box-Jenkins approach to time series modeling are introduced, as well as exponential smoothing and naive techniques. This part also covers hot topics such as Factor Analysis, Discriminant Analysis and Multidimensional Scaling (MDS).

Employment Relations in Financial Services: An Exploration of the Employee Experience After the Financial Crash
This book describes and analyses the impact of the 2007-2008 financial crisis upon the working conditions of employees in the financial services sector in Britain. It tells the story of workers being made to pay the price for a crisis that was not of their own making, but nevertheless caused a deleterious impact on their employment security, remuneration and working conditions. Evidence of fighting back against this has been sparse so that the response of employees is best characterised as 'fright' (grudgingly working harder and longer), 'flight' (leaving the sector through redundancy), and 'falling in line' (accepting the diktat of performance managements systems). Through this book we learn the reasons behind this acquiescence, with its detailed attention to topics such as the stunted development of labour unionism, the prevalence of union-management partnerships, and the occurrence of employment insecurity and labour shedding. Providing a valuable insight into the effects of the financial crash, Employment Relations in Financial Services will be useful to academics, students and also trade unionists.

Financial Modelling with Forward-looking Information: An Intuitive Approach to Asset Pricing
This book focuses on modelling financial information flows and information-based asset pricing framework. After introducing the fundamental properties of the framework, it presents a short information-theoretic perspective with a view to quantifying the information content of financial signals, and links the present framework with the literature on asymmetric information and market microstructure by means of a dynamic, bipartite, heterogeneous agent network. Numerical and explicit analyses shed light on the effects of differential information and information acquisition on the allocation of profit and loss as well as the pace of fundamental price discovery. The dynamic programming method is used to seek an optimal strategy for utilizing superior information. Lastly, the book features an implementation of the present framework using real-world financial data.

Political Dynamics in Micro Organisational Accounting Change: Politics, Power and Fear
This book explores the role of politics in cost accounting change. Empirical research sheds new light on how the macro-political dynamics of the state can underpin micro-level changes in an organisation's cost management practices. Taking an Egyptian state-owned enterprise as its case study, chapters explore the political evolution of these practices and how they became a political and consequently strategic imperative. The author examines the roles played by neoliberal political reform, re-privatisation, modernisation and state budget reform in relation to micro level changes in cost management practices. Readers are invited to learn about the public sector cost management practices and the changes that have taken place in various political, cultural, economic, and organisational settings.

Anomalies in Net Present Value, Returns and Polynomials, and Regret Theory in Decision-Making
This book explores why Modified Internal Rate of Return (MIRR) and Net Present Value (NPV) are not necessarily accurate or efficient tools for valuation and decision-making. The author specifically addresses the biases and framing effects inherent in the NPV/MIRR/IRR model and in related approaches such as Adjusted Present Value (APV), Net Future Value (NFV), and by extension, Polynomials. In doing so, the book presents new ways of solving higher order polynomials using invariants and homomorphisms and explains why the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra , the Binomial Theorem and the Descartes Sign Rule are unreliable. Chapters also discuss how International Asset Pricing Theory (IAPT) and Intertemporal Capital Asset Pricing Models (ICAPM) can produce inaccurate results in certain circumstances. The conditions under which ICAPM and IAPT may be accurate are described; as well as why those conditions cannot, or are unlikely to, exist. The conditions under which negative interest rates may exist or are justified are also outlined. Moreover, the author explains why traditional Consumption-Savings-Investment-Production models of allocation can be inefficient, and then introduces a new model of allocation that can be applied to individuals, households and companies. Finally, the book explains why the Elasticity of Intertemporal Substitution is a flawed concept and introduces the Marginal Rate of Intertemporal Joint Substitution as a solution.
