Accounting Theory as a Bayesian Discipline
Accounting Theory as a Bayesian Discipline introduces Bayesian theory and its role in statistical accounting information theory. The Bayesian statistical logic of probability, evidence and decision lies at the historical and modern center of accounting thought and research. It is not only the presumed rule of reasoning in analytical models of accounting disclosure, it is the default position for empiricists when hypothesizing about how the users of financial statements think. Bayesian logic comes to light throughout accounting research and is the soul of most strategic disclosure models. In addition, Bayesianism is similarly a large part of the stated and unstated motivation of empirical studies of how market prices and their implied costs of capital react to better financial disclosure. The approach taken in this monograph is a Demski-like treatment of accounting numbers as signals rather than as measurements. It should be of course that good measurements like quality earnings reports make generally better signals. However, to be useful for decision making under uncertainty, accounting measurements need to have more than established accounting measurement virtues. This monograph explains what those Bayesian information attributes are, where they come from in Bayesian theory, and how they apply in statistical accounting information theory.

Dynamic models of investment behavior are a natural setting for studying the desirable properties of accrual accounting rules. Dynamic Investment Models in Accounting Research presents three such models and discusses their applications to questions in accounting-based equity valuation and managerial performance measurement. The three models are closely related dynamic investment models. Section 2 studies the basic model where the firm periodically adjusts its capital stock in response to changing conditions in its product market, purchasing new capital goods when demand for its output improves and selling its existing capital goods when demand deteriorates. This model is perhaps the simplest variant of what is known as the neoclassical investment theory, and it captures one key feature of investment -- the mismatch in timing between investment costs and their associated economic benefits. Section 3 studies a vintage capital model in which the productivity of the firm's capital goods is allowed to follow any arbitrary pattern. This section shows that the performance evaluation perspective on optimal accounting rules is generally less demanding than the equity valuation perspective. Section 4 reverts to the assumption of geometric productivity but relaxes the assumption of perfect reversibility. Section 4 demonstrates that, while replacement cost information is useful for equity valuation in both reversible and irreversible investment models, the nature of the relation between the firm's equity value and the replacement cost of its assets is fundamentally different between the two settings.

Authority and Accountability in Hierarchies
Over the last four decades, the responsibility accounting literature has examined the determinants and consequences of a variety of issues concerning incentives and performance evaluation in hierarchical organizations. Authority and Accountability in Hierarchies examines the factors that drive assignment of authority inside the corporate hierarchy. In particular, we focus on authority assigned to middle managers or business-unit managers, rather than CEOs or senior executives, because decisions and actions taken at middle levels are collectively far-reaching and because little of the literature has focused on middle managers. In addition, compensation setting at lower levels of the corporate hierarchy usually differs from the process for setting compensation for the CEO and other senior executives. While business unit compensation is usually determined by corporate management, CEO and senior executive compensation is typically determined by the board. The authors also deemphasize issues pertaining to workers in lower ranks, except to the extent those worker-related characteristics affect middle managers. After a short introduction, Section 2 reviews the related theoretical and empirical literature. Section 3 studies the managerial span of control when managers' activities are to provide direction and support, monitor performance, and contract with subordinates. Section 4 illustrates the relation between performance measurement and managerial span of control. Section 5 studies the assignment of authority to support subordinates of different types. Section 6 summarizes empirical implications and discusses avenues for future research.

Managerial Accountant's Compass: Research Genesis and Development
This is the first detailed view of the managerial accountant's role and responsibilities in organization setting. Its aim is to foster role development: the opportunity to work at an advanced level of practice. Accounting studies develop technical skills associated with topics, and, responding to defined scenarios but provide very little guidance on what to recognizing and approaching the broad problems or challenges under conditions of uncertainty. It is a double first because it provides the managerial accountant's compass as a general purpose analytical framework for managerial accounting independent of any selected theory and method. The metaphor of a compass creates a mental schema for its four points named (1) goals and principles, (2) boundaries and constraints, (3) methods and models, and, (4) collegial relationships. Dynastic Chinese and some other Central Asian cultures, view the center as a fifth principal direction, giving a total of five points. The center represents a high standard ethical conduct and self-care, or moral compass. Managerial Accountant's Compass offers an integrated and systematic guide to approaching situations that are constantly changing. It gives a protective starting pattern which produces new meanings and awareness of the ambiguity and uncertainty for each situation. Ultimately the managerial accountant's compass can help you make more effective sense of yourself, your expertise and your practice in the organization where you work, which should open career opportunities.

Accounting for Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets
Concepts, methods, and issues in calculating the fair value of intangibles Accounting for Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets is a guide to one of the most challenging aspects of business valuation. Not only must executives and valuation professionals understand the complicated set of rules and practices that pertain to intangibles, they must also be able to recognize when to apply them. Inside, readers will find these many complexities clarified. Additionally, this book assists professionals in overcoming the difficulties of intangible asset accounting, such as the lack of market quotes and the conflicts among various valuation methodologies. Even the rarest and most problematic situations are treated in detail in Accounting for Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets. For example, the authors analyze principles for identifying finite intangible assets and appropriately accounting for amortization expenses or impairment losses. Using the information in this book, the results of these calculations can also be reported with precision on financial statements. These topics are especially important for ensuring the success of any asset acquisition or business combination. In these special cases, the utmost accuracy is essential. This book provides: * Rules for identifying and recognizing intangible assets in business combinations and asset acquisitions * Guidance on the accurate valuation and carrying amount calculation of acquired and self-created intangibles * Tips for overcoming the challenges unique to intangible assets, including impairment testing * Clear instructions for disclosing intangible assets, goodwill, and amortization expenses Accounting for Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets is an indispensable reference for valuation students and specialists. Ervin L. Black and Mark L. Zyla provide thorough instructions for understanding, accounting for, and reporting this challenging asset class.

One of the prime purposes of accounting is to communicate and yet, to date, this fundamental aspect of the discipline has received relatively little attention. The Routledge Companion to Accounting Communication represents the first collection of contributions to focus on the power of communication in accounting. The chapters have a shared aim of addressing the misconception that accounting is a purely technical, number-based discipline by highlighting the use of narrative, visual and technological methods to communicate accounting information. The contents comprise a mixture of reflective overview, stinging critique, technological exposition, clinical analysis and practical advice on topical areas of interest such as: The miscommunication that preceded the global financial crisis The failure of sustainability reporting The development of XBRL How to cut clutter With an international coterie of contributors, including a communication theorist, a Big Four practitioner and accounting academics, this volume provides an eclectic array of expert analysis and reflection. The contributors reveal how accounting communications represent, or misrepresent, the financial affairs of entities, thus presenting a state-of-the-art assessment on each of the main facets of this important topic. As such, this book will be of interest to a wide range of readers, including: postgraduate students in management and accounting; established researchers in the fields of both accounting and communications; and accounting practitioners.
