Playboy's Hugh Hefner: Empire of Skin
Hugh Hefner, the Playboy of the Western World, was a visionary publisher, an empire-builder, an avatar of pleasure, and a pajama-clad pipe-smoker with a pre-coital grin. In 1953, he published his first edition of Playboy, with Marilyn Monroe on the cover and her nude calendar inside. He obtained the rights for $500 with money borrowed from his puritanical Nebraska-born mother. Rebelling against his strict upbringing, he lost his virginity at the age of 22. I made up for my late start. In three years, I reached Don Juan's legendary benchmark of 1,003 conquests. Playboy, punctuated with nudes and studded with articles by major literary figures, rapidly increased its circulation, reaching its zenith at eight million readers. In addition to his role as a tasteful pornographer, Hef became a cultural warrior, fighting government censorship all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court after the Post Office refused to deliver his magazine to its subscribers. As the years and his notoriety progressed, he became an advocate of abortion, LGBT equality, and the legalization of pot. Eventually, he engaged in pubic wars with Bob Guccione, founder of Penthouse, which cut into Hef's sales. Lauded by millions of avid readers, he was denounced by feminists for exploiting women, and defined as the father of sex addiction, a huckster, a lecherous low-brow feeder of our vices, a misogynist, and, near the end of his life, a symbol of priapic senility. During his heyday, some of the biggest male stars in Hollywood, including Warren Beatty, Sammy Davis, Jr., Mick Jagger, and Jack Nicholson, came to frolic behind Hef's guarded walls, stripping nude in the hot tube grotto before sampling the rotating beds upstairs. A voice of doom, Malcolm X, directly warned him that the day of the white man will soon be finished. Even a future U.S. president came to call. Donald Trump had an appreciation of Bunny tail, Hef said. Hefner's last Viagra-fueled marriage was to a beautiful blonde, Crystal Harris, 60 years his junior. There's nothing wrong in a man marrying a girl who could be his great-granddaughter, he was famously quoted as saying. This ground-breaking biography, the latest in Blood Moon's string of outrageously unvarnished myth-busters, is the first published since Hefner's death at the age of 91 in 2017. It is a provocative saga, rich in tantalizing, often shocking detail--definitely not for the sanctimonious or the faint of heart.

This is the story of a young boy from the rough side of Tunbridge Wells (yes, there is one). A boy born in black and white (as his parents couldn't afford colour) who would survive the trauma of terrifying 1960s children's TV puppet shows and public information films, a family break up and being a gay teenager through the Glam Rock 1970s to go to London and become part of the new wave of youth culture in Punk and Disco. It's the story of 70s and 80s youth subculture told through pioneering gay theatre productions, the world's first ever gay radio pirate radio broadcasts and then finally becoming the first openly gay TV presenter on the seminal rock television show, The Tube. Throughout all of these times this author's story is that of an outsider, someone who experienced extraordinary people, times and events without ever venturing too far in. This is also the story of forgotten people, other outsiders; those who took risks, fought the system and whose names and feats have slipped away into obscurity. But above all this is a book which captures the zeitgeist of a 60s childhood, a teenage 70s and the explosion of youth culture in the early 80s. From Bolan and Bowie to Frankie and Duran Duran, every cliche is there stuck rigid with nuclear hair gel and fabulous shoulder pads. If you've ever wondered what a TV presenter actually does whilst trying to figure out what's going on around him, then this is the story for you.

Talking to the Stars: Bobbie Wygant's Seventy Years in Television
In her memoir Talking to the Stars: Bobbie Wygant's Seventy Years in Television, Bobbie Wygant recalls her trailblazing career as an arts and entertainment reporter for Dallas-Fort Worth's Channel 5. Started in 1948 by Amon G. Carter, WBAP (now KXAS) was the first television station west of the Mississippi, and Wygant was there from the beginning. Like everyone on that early Channel 5 staff, Wygant pitched in to do a little of everything-writing copy, performing live on-air skits, presenting commercials-but she soon became known for the way she connected with celebrities. In a career spanning seven decades, Wygant has interviewed literally thousands of the most notable entertainers and celebrities since the 1950s-from Bob Hope, Jane Fonda, and Denzel Washington to Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Matt Damon. Wygant was live on the air with her popular midday program Dateline on November 22, 1963, when news broke of JFK's assassination. A few months later, during their debut tour of the US, she interviewed the Beatles. In addition to charming and often funny accounts of her interviews with the stars, Wygant's personal observations of television broadcasting as it emerged at WBAP-TV offer fascinating insights into the infancy of today's multi-billion-dollar industry. This engaging and informative volume includes more than three hundred photographs of her favorite celebrity encounters.

At the Birth of Bowie: Life with the Man Who Became a Legend
It is 1965, and Swinging London is coming into its prime years. The streets are alive with mods and rockers, playboys and good-time girls, all revelling in the blossoming artistic, creative and cultural energies of the decade. Amid the colour and chaos is a boy sporting drainpipe jeans, an immaculately tailored sports coat and a half-inch wide tie. A devoted fan of The Who, he looks the part in his pristine mod gear. As the lead singer of the Lower Third, his talent is shaping itself into something truly special. His name is Davie Jones. In ten years, he will be unrecognisable as fresh-faced boy of 1965, and in just over fifty years, his death will be mourned by millions, his legacy the story of the greatest rock star of all time. And through Bowie's transition from pop group member to solo performer, Phil Lancaster was by his side. As the drummer in Bowie's band, the Lower Third, Phil was there as the singer's musical stripes began to show, and was witness to his early recording techniques, his first experimental forays into drug-taking, and the band's discovery of his bisexuality in shocking circumstances. In this riveting - and often very funny - memoir, Phil tells the story of life alongside the insecure yet blazingly talented boy who became Bowie, at a critical crossroad of time and place in music history. What follows is an intimate, personal and important perspective on the genesis of one of the most iconic musicians of the twentieth century - one that gets under the skin of the man himself, before the personas and alter-egos masked the fascinating figure beneath them. At the Birth of Bowie is essential reading for anyone who knows what happened on Bowie's journey, but wants to understand how, and why, it ever began.

Stan Lee: The Man behind Marvel
The Amazing Spider-Man. The Incredible Hulk. The Invincible Iron Man. Black Panther. These are just a few of the iconic superheroes to emerge from the mind of Stan Lee. From the mean streets of Depression-era New York City to recipient of the National Medal of Arts, Lee's life has been almost as remarkable as the thrilling adventures he spun for decades. From millions of comic books fans of the 1960s through billions of moviegoers around the globe, Stan Lee has touched more people than almost any person in the history of popular culture. In Stan Lee: The Man behind Marvel, Bob Batchelor offers an eye-opening look at this iconic visionary, a man who created (with talented artists) many of history's most legendary characters. In this energetic and entertaining biography, Batchelor explores how Lee capitalized on natural talent and hard work to become the editor of Marvel Comics as a teenager. After toiling in the industry for decades, Lee threw caution to the wind and went for broke, co-creating the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, and others in a creative flurry that revolutionized comic books for generations of readers. Marvel superheroes became a central part of pop culture, from collecting comics to innovative merchandising, from superhero action figures to the ever-present Spider-Man lunchbox. Batchelor examines many of Lee's most beloved works, including the 1960s comics that transformed Marvel from a second-rate company to a legendary publisher. This book reveals the risks Lee took to bring the characters to life and Lee's tireless efforts to make comic books and superheroes part of mainstream culture for more than fifty years. Stan Lee: The Man behind Marvel not only reveals why Lee developed into such a central figure in American entertainment history, but brings to life the cultural significance of comic books and how the superhero genre reflects ideas central to the American experience. Candid, authoritative, and utterly absorbing, this is a biography of a man who dreamed of one day writing the Great American Novel, but ended up doing so much more-changing American culture by creating new worlds and heroes that have entertained generations of readers.

Bare Knees Flapper: The Life and Films of Virginia Lee Corbin
As the most popular child star in the movies for a brief period in the late 1910's, Virginia Lee Corbin became well-known to millions of fans around the world. However, she did not fade into obscurity once her child-like charms began to diminish. With her mother as manager, she performed for a couple of years in vaudeville, a wise move that allowed her to mature before continuing her film career. Fitting right into the flapper mold of the Jazz Age (one writer considered her a serious competitor with Clara Bow for that title), Virginia was busy in films for numerous studios throughout the 1920's. However, as she matured, her mother found that she could not control the flapper Virginia as she did the child star. By the time Mrs. Corbin tried to commit suicide in 1927, the blonde star found that all the money she had earned was gone. Desiring to get away from the conflicts and control of her mother, she asked the court to appoint a guardian. A marriage just as she turned 18 was another attempt to free herself from her mother, but that ended in a bitter and much publicized divorce that separated her from her children. Falling victim to the sound era, she was still trying to make a comeback when she died at 31 years old in 1942.

Lois Weber: Interviews
Lois Weber (1879-1939) was one of early Hollywood's most successful screenwriter-directors. A one-time Church Army worker who preached from street corners, Weber began working in the American film industry as an actress around 1908 but quickly ascended to the positions of screenwriter and director. She wrote, directed, starred in, edited, and titled hundreds of movies during her career and is believed to be the first woman to direct a feature film. At the height of her influence, Weber used her medium to address pressing social issues such as birth control, abortion, capital punishment, poverty, and drug abuse. She gained international fame in 1915 with her controversial Hypocrites, a complex film that featured full female nudity as part of its important moral lesson. Her most famous film, Where Are My Children?, was the Universal studio's biggest box-office hit the following year and played to enthusiastic audiences around the globe. These productions and many others contributed to her standing as a truly world-class filmmaker. Despite her many successes, Weber was pushed out of the business in the 1930s as a result of Hollywood's institutionalized sexism. Shoved into the corners of film history, she remained a largely forgotten figure for decades. Lois Weber: Interviews restores her long-muted voice by reprinting more than sixty items in which she expressed her views on a range of filmic subjects. The volume includes interviews, articles that Weber wrote, the text of a speech she gave, and reconstructed conversations with her Hollywood coworkers. Lois Weber: Interviews provides key insights into one of our first great writer-directors, her many films, and the changing business in which she worked.

Rebel: My Life Outside the Lines
The legendary icon tells his story-a tale of art, passion, commitment, addiction, as intense and hypnotic as the man himself. In a career spanning five decades, Nick Nolte has endured the rites of Hollywood celebrity. Rising from obscurity to leading roles and Oscar nominations, he has been both celebrated and vilified in the media; survived marriages, divorces, and a string of romances; was named the Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine; and suffered public humiliation over his drug and alcohol issues, including a drug-fueled trip down a long road of nothingness that ended in arrest. Despite these ups and downs, Nolte has remained true to the craft he loves, portraying a diverse range of characters with his trademark physicality and indelible gravelly voice. Already 35 when his performance in the 1976 miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man launched him to stardom, Nolte never learned to play by Hollywood's rules. A rebel who defies expectations, an obsessive method actor who will go to extremes for a role (he lived among the homeless to prepare for Down and Out in Beverly Hills), Nolte is motivated more by edgier, more personal projects than by box office success. Today he is clean yet still driven, juggling a number of upcoming works and raising his young daughter. A man who refuses to hide his mistakes, Nolte now delivers his most revealing performance yet. His revealing memoir, filled with sixteen pages of color photos, offers a candid, unvarnished close-up look at the man, the career, the loves, and the life.

Finding Nemon: The Extraordinary Life of the Outsider Who Sculpted the Famous
The first biography of sculptor Oscar Nemon (1906-1985), the unknown artist behind some of Britain's most iconic statues. Oscar Nemon is one of the twentieth century's greatest sculptors, as testified by his iconic portraits of elder statesmen and major figures displayed all over the world. He was a flamboyant personality who charmed those who came in contact with him, including towering figures such as Winston Churchill, Sigmund Freud and Queen Elizabeth II and countless politicians and celebrities, as well as a host of women including his long-suffering wife. Their elder daughter Aurelia has gone in search of this often infuriating yet charismatic man and reveals the stories behind his artistic and personal encounters with presidents, prime ministers, royalty and others. She chronicles her father's life from humble origins as a Jew in modern-day Croatia to his refuge from the Nazis in southern England and the life and career he made for himself in and around London with his British wife Patricia. The author engagingly explains how the Queen nicknamed him the `missing Oscar' and how Nemon became the subject of the only attempt at sculpture by his friend Churchill, who posed for many likenesses including a monumental bronze in the House of Commons. The result is an intimate biography of an artist, husband and father complemented by a wealth of fascinating illustrations. Nemon's remarkable talent should have resulted in wide international renown, but he struggled for much of his early career, as many within the British establishment from the 1930s on - including Patricia's parents - were openly anti-Semitic, and they excluded him from their circles. Yet his achievements were great and his legacy immense. In Finding Nemon, the first biography of Oscar Nemon to appear in English, richly illustrated and beautifully presented, Aurelia Young draws her father out from the shadow of his remarkable body of work. `I greatly admire the art of Mr Oscar Nemon, whose prowess in the ancient classical realm of sculpture has won such remarkable appreciation in our country.' - Winston Churchill `His work will ensure that his name and reputation survive.' - Queen Elizabeth II `When my words are forgotten I will be remembered as an excellent example of Nemon's middle period.' - Harold Macmillan `During a lifetime that spanned most of the twentieth century Croatia-born Nemon, who fled to Britain before the Second World War, sculpted dukes, kings, queens, lords and field marshals . . . Politicians and war heroes were like putty in his presence.' - Daily Telegraph `A marvellous book by Aurelia Young on her late father, the sculptor and genius Oscar Nemon . . . Against the odds, being a Jewish refugee, Nemon's journey brings you close to the people who shaped and impacted on the twentieth century.' - Matthew Parris `Aurelia Young has learned a vast amount about her father . . . He remained elusively both outsider and insider, arguably a position occupied by many of the best artists but deeply painful at times.' - Anne Seba.

The Infamous Cherry Sisters: The Worst Act in Vaudeville
Raised in poverty on an Iowa farm, the Cherry Sisters had little education and no training. But they possessed a burning desire to take to the stage and show the world what they could do-and what they could do was awful. Their unique act was so bad it was good. When the sisters took the stage, they were met with rotten fruit and vegetables, festering meat, dead cats, old washtubs. Riots often broke out after (and sometimes during) their concerts, but despite that, they carried on, changing attitudes-and laws-along the way. This book follows the five women through their forty-year career in vaudeville theaters across the U.S. Proud, fearless and fiercely independent in a time when women were treated as second-class citizens, the Cherry Sisters insisted that their voices be heard.

Images of the Past: Fallen Idols: A Century of Screen Sex Scandals
It's a scandal! How often we use that phrase and what a catalogue of sins it covers. That's what this book is all about. It is literally a catalogue of sins - committed by some of the most celebrated names on the planet. Within these covers are startling stories of scandals during a century when screen idols seemed to vie with each other in outraging public decency. It was an age when fan fever was at its height and an endless supply of shocking revelations emerged to fuel the frenzy. Because of the perpetrators' superstar status, the shame of exposure was often heightened, not only wrecking reputations but often harming careers and, at least, ensuring very public humiliation. The lessons learned from these cases of celebrity scandal (though often, it seems, not by the celebrities themselves) is that the bigger the star, the harder the fall ... and that deceit and intrigue so often turn hard-won fame into instant infamy.

Smash!: Green Day, The Offspring, Bad Religion, NOFX, and the '90s Punk Explosion
Two decades after the Sex Pistols and the Ramones birthed punk music into the world, their artistic heirs burst onto the scene and changed the genre forever. While the punk originators remained underground favorites and were slow burns commercially, their heirs shattered commercial expectations for the genre. In 1994, Green Day and The Offspring each released their third albums, and the results were astounding. Green Day's Dookie went on to sell more than 15 million copies and The Offspring's Smash remains the all-time bestselling album released on an independent label. The times had changed, and so had the music. While many books, articles, and documentaries focus on the rise of punk in the '70s, few spend any substantial time on its resurgence in the '90s. Smash! will be the first to do so, detailing the circumstances surrounding the shift in '90s music culture away from grunge and legitimizing what many first-generation punks regard as post-punk, new wave, and generally anything but true punk music. With astounding access to all the key players of the time, including members of Green Day, The Offspring, NOFX, Rancid, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, and many others, renowned music writer Ian Winwood will at last give this significant, substantive, and compelling story its due. Punk rock bands were never truly successful or indeed truly famous, and that was that--until it wasn't. Smash! is the story of how the underdogs finally won and forever altered the landscape of mainstream music.

Dear Dudley: Life and Laughter - A celebration of the much-loved comedy legend: A Celebration of the Much-Loved Comedy Legend
Barbra Paskin was the late Dudley Moore's official biographer, having known him well for many years. In this latest book, she provides an affectionate celebration of this extraordinary comic and musical talent, perhaps the best-loved major star of his or any generation. Although it rehearses his extraordinary life and career from Beyond the Fringe with the Cambridge Footlights, followed by his long association with Peter Cook that produced such immortal programmes as Not Only . . . But Also, to Hollywood stardom with films like 10 and Arthur, it is more than a mere biography. Uniquely, Dear Dudley also publishes for the first time the many kind, comforting, supportive, and often extremely funny letters that the author obtained from leading celebrities to mark Dudley's sixty-fourth birthday, from the Rolling Stones to Michael Caine, Billy Joel to Alan Bennett, Goldie Hawn to Woody Allen, all of whom have given permission for them to be reproduced in the book.

Let's Go!: Benjamin Orr and The Cars
When Ben got out of the hospital he said, `When I fall down and can't pick myself up we'll know it's over. Until then, we rock!' - Jeff Carlisi Benjamin Orr was the co-founder, co-lead singer, and bassist for the platinum-selling rock band The Cars. Often considered the band's heartthrob, Orr possessed an incredible voice, diverse musical talent, and rare stage presence, all balanced by an enigmatic personality and a relentless determination to reach rock stardom. Selling over 30 million albums worldwide with fifteen Billboard Top 40 hits, The Cars certainly achieved success. Within a decade of the debut album, though, Orr found himself adrift and without a band. Veteran music journalist Joe Milliken draws together interviews with over 120 family members, friends, bandmates, and music associates from Orr's life, as well as many unpublished and never-before-seen photos from private collections, to reveal an intimate portrait of one of classic rock's greatest talents. From Orr's first performances as a house-band musician for the TV show UpBeat through his creation of The Cars with Ric Ocasek to Orr's eventual rebirth with the supergroup Big People, this definitive account of Orr's life is a rollercoaster ride that sheds new light on the history of The Cars. Orr is no longer able to rock with The Cars, but the music he made with them continues to attract new generations of fans. Coinciding with the band's 2018 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this first-ever biography of Benjamin Orr immortalizes his legacy as a deeply kind-hearted and exceptionally talented musician who would stop at nothing to live his rock and roll dream.

Paul Martin: My World Of Antiques: Collect, buy and sell everyday antiques like an expert
Paul Martin, famous for his passion for beautiful furniture, has been the hugely successful TV presenter on BBC1's Flog It! for the past fifteen years. In this book he reveals hitherto untold stories of fantastic artefact finds, and tells us about the key to success in trading antiques. As witty as ever, Paul takes on everything from pietra dura to Pop Art, from Britain to Australia, from trash to treasure. My World of Antiques offers a unique insight into the history of antiques thanks to Paul's boundless knowledge of people and places, be it Queen Victoria's royal life at Osborne House or Dame Lucie Rie's ceramic works in a London pottery studio after the Second World War. With a keen eye for detail and the influences that shaped arts and crafts, Paul brings current studies of antique objects to life. He invites us to join him on a journey to exotic countries that bear the mark of colonial trade, discussing rare discoveries that now sell for breathtaking prices at UK auctions. With his trademark charm and enthusiasm, Paul enriches his tales with personal anecdotes about dearly loved equine skeletons, celebrity acquaintances in the art scene, and childhood idols. All the while, Paul does what he does best: he gives us a taste of the wonders of antique pieces, and encourages us to open our eyes to the uniqueness and value of forgotten objects. This book is the perfect read for everyone who loved BBC's Flog It!, Britain's Hidden Heritage, and Paul Martin's Handmade Revolution - and for those with a heart for all things past and mysterious.

Rugby: Talking A Good Game: The Perfect Gift for Rugby Fans
Ian Robertson joined the BBC during the golden age of radio broadcasting and was given a crash course in the art of sports commentary from some of the greatest names ever to sit behind a microphone: Cliff Morgan and Peter Bromley, Bryon Butler and John Arlott. Almost half a century after being introduced to the rugby airwaves by his inspiring mentor Bill McLaren, the former Scotland fly-half looks back on the most eventful of careers, during which he covered nine British and Irish Lions tours and eight World Cups, including the 2003 tournament that saw England life the Webb Ellis Trophy and Robbo pick up awards for his spine-tingling description of Jonny Wilkinson's decisive drop goal. He reflects on his playing days, his role in guiding Cambridge University to a long spell of Varsity Match supremacy and his relationships with some of the union code's most celebrated figures, including Sir Clive Woodward and Jonah Lomu. He also writes vividly and hilariously of his experiences as a horse racing enthusiast, his meetings with some of the world's legendary golfers and his dealings with a stellar cast of sporting outsiders, from Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor to Nelson Mandela. It is a hugely entertaining story that begins in a bygone rugby age, yet has much to say about the game in the here and now.

Written from an insider's extraordinary working encounters and packed with never-seen-before pictures, this compelling and entertaining compendium of astonishing (and often hilarious) anecdotes, is a must-read for anyone who appreciates the sounds and sights of the 70s, 80s and 90s. Fascinating encounters and working relationships with over fifty global super-stars - from Madonna to Miles Davis, David Bowie, Little Richard, Ozzy Osbourne, Bryan Ferry, Malcolm Maclaren, Sting, Elton John, Jane Fonda and many more, are described with wry humour. Amongst many, there are first-hand tales of the great Miles Davis being ordered to stop playing his trumpet ( that thing ) in a Newcastle pub; Chris paying Madonna's train fare (standard class) with cash in brown envelope; Red Hot Chilli Peppers playing on top of a giant hot dog in Hollywood, and a meeting with Grace Jones wearing a Micky Mouse hat in Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Namedropper - an unorthodox biography is jam-packed with similar observations and anecdotes on the rich and famous of the day and is written with huge warmth and wit by broadcaster, film maker and former producer of Channel 4's The Tube, Chris Phipps.

Bill Duke: My 40-Year Career on Screen and behind the Camera
While many film fans may not be familiar with Bill Duke's name, they most certainly recognize his face. Dating back to the 1970s, Duke has appeared in a number of popular films, including Car Wash, American Gigolo, Commando, Predator, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Fewer still might be aware of Duke's extraordinary accomplishments off-screen-as a talented director, producer, entrepreneur, and humanitarian. Bill Duke: My 40-Year Career on Screen and behind the Camera is the memoir of a Hollywood original. In an industry that rarely embraces artists of color, Duke first achieved success as an actor then turned to directing. After helming episodes of ratings giants Dallas, Falcon Crest, Hill Street Blues, and Miami Vice, Duke progressed to feature films like A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover, Hoodlum, and Sister Act 2. In this candid autobiography, Duke recalls the loving but stern presence of his mother and father, acting mentors like Olympia Dukakis, and the pitfalls that nearly derailed his career, notably an addiction to drugs. Along the way, readers will encounter familiar names like Danny Glover, Laurence Fishburne, Forest Whitaker, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Whoopi Goldberg. From his Broadway debut in 1971 to the establishment of the Duke Media Foundation, which trains and mentors young filmmakers, Duke has been breaking the rules of what it means to triumph in the entertainment industry. Recalling pivotal moments in his life, Bill Duke: My 40-Year Career on Screen and behind the Camera is the story only Bill Duke could tell.

Handcrafted: A Woodworker's Story
Clint Harp, maverick carpenter on HGTV's smash hit Fixer Upper and the star of Wood Work on the DIY Network, presents his inspirational memoir that celebrates meaningful work, turning your craft into a career, and recognizing the importance of the journey itself. While Clint Harp is now known as Chip and Joanna Gaines's go-to table maker on Fixer Upper and a nationally acclaimed artisan, his life has not always been the DIY dream we see on the show. Ten years ago, he played the role of what he thought was a good husband, father, and provider, dutifully working at a sales job that came with a healthy paycheck. Yet he kept coming back to his unfilled dream of building furniture. With the support of his wife, the encouragement of a mentor, and a life full of lessons, he finally took the leap, quit his job and set out on a quest to become a carpenter. Without formal training, financing, workspace, or customers, the Harps were quickly on the edge of financial collapse. Than Clint met Chip Gaines at a gas station--a chance encounter that marked the next chapter on a wild ride Clint and his wife, Kelly, wouldn't have imagined possible. Spanning Clint's remarkable journey--from a childhood learning carpentry and hard work at his grandfather's knee, through his struggles to balance pursuing his dreams with supporting his family, to his partnership with Chip and Joanna Gaines and the many adventures and misadventures of filming Fixer Upper--Handcrafted is part memoir and part manual for dreamers. Clint provides unvarnished, thoughtful reflections on a path that is possible for anyone bold enough to pursue it.

Aretha: The Queen of Soul: A Life in Photographs
This beautifully illustrated unofficial retrospective celebrates the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and reflects on her life, music, and legacy. Aretha Franklin's voice was legendary, unforgettable: deeply rooted in gospel, yet versatile enough to brilliantly interpret R&B, rock, soul, pop, and jazz standards, it fueled a six-decade career. Her vocal wallop was a mix of preaching, rebuke, and elation. From the languorous I Never Loved a Man (the Way That I Love You), to the funky Chain of Fools, to the fiercely feminist Think, to the definitive, demanding version of Otis Redding's Respect, Franklin's songs played out against the tumultuous sociopolitical backdrop of the late '60s like a soundtrack meant to set things right. Her accolades were many: she received the Kennedy Center honor in 1994, won 18 Grammys(R), was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and performed for presidents and the Pope. Illustrated with 85 photos, and with insightful text from noted radio personality and author Meredith Ochs, Aretha explores the diva's life, from her formative years growing up in Detroit, to her singing and recording career from the 1950s until her untimely death in 2018, to her numerous honors, awards, and causes, including her advocacy for civil rights and the arts.

Hank and Jim: The Fifty-Year Friendship of Henry Fonda and James Stewart
[A] remarkably absorbing, supremely entertaining joint biography (The New York Times) from bestselling author Scott Eyman about the remarkable friendship of Henry Fonda and James Stewart, two Hollywood legends who maintained a close relationship that endured all of life's twists and turns. Henry Fonda and James Stewart were two of the biggest stars in Hollywood for forty years, but they became friends when they were unknown. They roomed together as stage actors in New York, and when they began making films in Hollywood, they were roommates again. Between them they made such classic films as The Grapes of Wrath, Mister Roberts, Twelve Angry Men, and On Golden Pond; and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Philadelphia Story, It's a Wonderful Life, Vertigo, and Rear Window. They got along famously, with a shared interest in elaborate practical jokes and model airplanes, among other things. But their friendship also endured despite their differences: Fonda was a liberal Democrat, Stewart a conservative Republican. Fonda was a ladies' man who was married five times; Stewart remained married to the same woman for forty-five years. Both men volunteered during World War II and were decorated for their service. When Stewart returned home, still unmarried, he once again moved in with Fonda, his wife, and his two children, Jane and Peter, who knew him as Uncle Jimmy. For his breezy, entertaining (Publishers Weekly) Hank and Jim, biographer and film historian Scott Eyman spoke with Fonda's widow and children as well as three of Stewart's children, plus actors and directors who had worked with the men-in addition to doing extensive archival research to get the full details of their time together. This is not just another Hollywood story, but a fascinating...richly documented biography (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) of an extraordinary friendship that lasted through war, marriages, children, careers, and everything else.

***A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*** From the co-creator and co-star of the hit series Broad City, a hilarious and poignant collection about love, loss, work, comedy and figuring out who you really are when you thought you already knew. When Abbi Jacobson announced to friends and acquaintances that she planned to drive across the country alone, she was met with lots of questions and opinions: Why wasn't she going with friends? Wouldn't it be incredibly lonely? The North route is better! Was it safe for a woman? The Southern route is the way to go! You should bring mace! And a common one . . . why? But Abbi had always found comfort in solitude, and needed space to step back and hit the reset button. As she spent time in each city and town on her way to Los Angeles, she mulled over the big questions - What do I really want? What is the worst possible scenario in which I could run into my ex? How has the decision to wear my shirts tucked in been pivotal in my adulthood? In this collection of anecdotes, observations and reflections - all told in the sharp, wildly funny and relatable voice that has endeared Abbi to critics and fans alike - readers will feel like they're in the passenger seat on a fun and, ultimately, inspiring journey. With some original illustrations by the author.
